Already in his chambers Baron Humbert von Hickengen, thought about this girl. He was really alert to the fact that she could see him, and maybe even hear him. But the idea of checking it out he dismissed at once. After all, he did not want to frighten her, and she looked quite a well-mannered, kind and intelligent lady. And that hope, settled in the center of his soul, and like a candle warmed the age-old ice a little.
And it made sense in itself not to let his eyes descend from her. For danger can come from where you least expect it. This he knew from experience. He glanced at his watch and realized that it was already half past eight. That meant that the time was approaching when he was going to get a severe headache.
Outside, the raven and the cat had finished their round of fighting. And each went about his business, the cat licking his disheveled fur, while the crow brushed his feathers. The crow decided to start the first conversation. After they exchanged a few phrases, a new round began. It could not be completed as two shouts broke out, a female and a male.
"What was that?"-Toto said quickly, still a little confused about what had just happened
"Eight o'clock, chicken brains"-parried Muta.
"I know what happens at eight o'clock without you, morschmelo"-said the crow angrily
"Then, why are you being scary?" asked Muta, incomprehensible to his old friend.
"Just, the man's scream is the baron, but whose was the woman's?"-concernedly noted, question to question
The cat smacked his paw on his forehead-"that must be the chicken the Baron asked me to look after"-Toto only nodded at that
"You check on that girl, and I'll check on the Baron. You come back later and report back" - and he strolled off in the direction of the manor.
"What am I, a quick news service?" he too, cowering, headed off in the direction of the manor.
Toto didn't hear the last comment, since he was already a long way off. Landing on the frame, he knocked insistently.
"Open up, Baron, it's me, Toto"-he quickly muttered without formality.
Hearing a distinctive click, he took off into space, and hovered until the windows were well open so he could get in. As he flew in, he immediately settled on the back of a chair.
"Baron, we heard screams, from the manor," Toto decided not to pull the cat's tail, and got right to the point
"Yes, it happened again"-the Baron said in a hoarse voice, though his silhouette was spread out on the couch
"But, besides you, we heard a woman screaming, presumably it was the brunette," suggested the raven's theory
"What?" asked the Baron sharply.
"I sent the fat man to find out and report back to us," the feathered friend assured him just as sharply.
"That's good, I hope she's all right"-he said in a whisper, but that didn't spare him the raven's knowing gaze
Muta, as soon as he got to the door, he ran into a group of people. So he had to, in a huff, squeeze through to get to the girl. The doctor gave her some kind of pill and a glass of water. Then all his attention, was turned to the crowd patiently, waiting for their verdict.
"The girl just has a headache, from overwork"-turning his attention to the exit-"it would be better if everyone went out and gave her some rest"-and almost pushed people out of the room.
