Livid, she was livid.
How many times did she have to fall for his lies,
to look for the best in him?
She was losing it,
losing herself,
trying to keep this perfect marriage,
this perfect world,
together.
Perfect, another word that meant nothing any more,
same as his promises,
his reassurances that he wasn't doing anything wrong.
She knew he was lying.
She'd seen the front page of the paper,
seen the tidbits in the gossip section.
Skeeter might be aggressive and horrible,
the there was some truth to those words.
That truth hit her heart like an arrow,
piercing her tender emotions.
She'd trusted him,
she'd loved him,
and how dare he betray her!
If you ever need anything, anything at all.
Those had been the whispered words of a criminal in her ear,
a criminal she'd helped free.
Her fingers found his number,
tracing the faded black ink.
Livid,
she was livid and maybe he'd know how to fix it?
She didn't think as she dialed,
didn't think as she set up a meeting
place
time.
He was there,
bare arms crossed,
tattoos decorating his flesh.
She remembered why she'd spoken for him,
why he was free now.
Anything he had promised.
He would do anything for her.
That included...
she didn't want to ask details,
but she knew her husband
would no longer be sleeping around,
would no longer be the subject of the gossip pages.
He would no longer cause her grief,
raise her ire, or even interact with her again.
Livid,
she had been livid.
Now, there was only peace,
and a small price to be paid,
one she would happily
give in to as strong tattooed arms reminded her of love,
of safety, of a life she'd longed to live before the betrayal.
