Jason is swinging home when there's a whooshing sound and a flash of light on a building below him. He investigates, swinging down and landing on the rooftop. It's a portal, a portal he recognizes. It looks exactly like the one that Lady Chance fell out of the first time they met. He hasn't seen her use one since that first night though, which raises the question of why she's using it now, and why, instead of her jumping out of it like he would expect, it's just swirling in front of him. He looks around warily.
"Lady Chance?" he calls. There's no answer.
He walks closer to the portal. Hesitantly, he reaches out a hand and pokes at it. It feels strange, though that's not too surprising. He looks around for anyone before coming to a decision. Drawing his gun, he steps through the portal.
He wasn't sure what he was expecting to see when he came out on the other side of the portal, but it wasn't this. He's standing in a shabby one-room apartment. The lights are off, but he can still see that the paint is peeling and the ceiling is discolored in spots. On top of that, it's cold, there's clearly no working heat. He looks around for any sign of Lady Chance, before spotting the mattress in the corner.
He gives a start when he sees her. She's in costume, mask on, curled into several blankets, and she's not moving. He quickly holsters his gun and hurries over to her, hurriedly checking for a pulse.
Nothing.
He tries again, pulling his gloves off. Her skin is cold against his fingers. "Come on, you better not be dead."
There! It's weak, and incredibly slow, but he can just barely feel her heartbeat.
"Okay, she's alive. That's good. But how do I get her out of here? She's too cold to take outside, but I still need to get her somewhere warm."
Suddenly, there's a whoosh and another portal opens in front of him.
He stares at it. "That works."
Deciding not to question it, he picks Lady Chance up and carries her through, finding himself in the living room of the safe house where he first met the girl he's carrying in his arms.
He carries her over to the mattress and places her on it, hurrying back over to the cupboards to grab heat packs from his store of emergency supplies.
He's just turned around and started walking back over to her when there's a flash. Lady Chance's mask has disappeared, leaving a girl, about his age, lying on the bed in black pajamas with green paw prints on them. Well, that confirms the magic suit theory.
He brings the hot packs over and place them against her before checking her pulse. To his relief, her pulse is back to normal, and her skin is also starting to warm up.
She'll be okay. He sets a blanket on her and watches as she stirs just enough to pull it tighter around her. He'll make sure of it.
