The intro opens with Anne's hands on the Calamity Box, opening it. Light from inside the box shines brightly before it switches to a scene that shows Kenji, Anne, Sasha, and Marcy, looking inside. Suddenly there was a white light and everything when blank.
Kenji was on the ground when the light faded, covered in mud with Anne next to him. When he woke up, he looked shocked to see he was in Amphibia with Anne. The two friends stood up and looked at their surroundings in awe.
The camera then zoomed out and showed the entire world of Amphibia.
Tenohira ni kizama re teru
Tsugihagi no yona sono sen ni furete
The scene then changed to the town of Wartwood as the frog inhabitants go about their daily lives. As a pair of dragonflies fly past the camera, it followed them until stopping at the Plantar farmhouse while the sun was starting to rise in the sky.
When the camera changed to show the house's front door, Kenji and Anne stepped out from inside and out into the world. Ready to take on the day. But first, they ducked their heads under some dragonflies that passed them.
Hibiware sona atama to
Gurasu ga sasata kokoro de mae hashiru
The camera moves up to a window on the side of the house. Sprig opened the window with a telescope in hand. He looked through it at the horizon before slipping off the windowsill and started falling. Inside the house, Hop Pop was reading one of his books in his study when Sprig's falling and screaming made him look at his window. Down on the ground, Sprig had landed in Polly's bucket. His little sister responded by punching her brother in the butt. Sending him flying out of the bucket. She then dove back into her bucket of water.
Sprig landed on Anne's head, and the three of them smiled at one another. Then Sprig pointed at something. Kenji pulled out one of his Class Cards, and the friends rushed off into the unknown.
The scene changed to show Kenji, Anne, and Sprig hopping across multiple mushrooms that lit up when one of them landed on it.
Koware kake no sekai
Kuzure so o de memai
The next scene showed Anne, Sprig, and Kenji running for their lives from a giant chicken monster. Kenji summons a black steed from his Rider Card then gets the others on and gallops away faster from the giant poultry. The scene begins to break apart as red line spread across the screen.
The next scene showed Sprig, Anne, Kenji, Polly, and Hop Pop fishing together on a lily pad before it suddenly rose into the air. Underneath it was a giant fish that started swimming around as everyone started screaming. Kenji, however, started stabbing it with a black broadsword. The scene to break apart like the scene before.
Another scene showed Sprig in a temple looking at something before Kenji and Anne came rushing down the stairs beside him. Anne picked him up as they ran away from a giant boulder that came crashing into the temple. And just like the last two scenes, it begins to break apart in red lines.
Karappo na karada de
Ibtsuna shikai
The next scene showed a red, dark area. Anne and Kenji had their backs together, and both having looks of determination. Anne raised her card: Alter Ego, and Kenji raised his card: Saber as the cards begin to glow.
Still, in the same scene, the viewer is suddenly pulled back to reveal that they were surrounded by dozens of twisted frog/toad/newt-like creatures and a giant snake crawling up from behind them. Towering over them and hissing.
Zokkuri to myako o utsu inochi no sen
Naifu de nazotte nobashite shimaetara

The amphibian-like abominations started attacking as Kenji now armed with Balmung/Gram and Anne now armed with the Absolute Sword – Endless Three-Stage rushed towards the viewer. Smashing, slicing, and killing any twisted being that came at them. Just as the viewer watched them go past the camera on both sides, the Giant Snake lunged at the fleeing kids. Its mouth opens as it comes towards the camera before the viewer is in the blackness of the snake's mouth, but it didn't last long as Kenji swung his sword and cuts down the snake with one strike.

The scene changed again to a split screen with the left side show Anne's photo of herself, Kenji, Sasha, and Marcy together being held in a gloved hand and on the right is an older man in his fifties with a grin on his face. A flash of light showed the man's face more and the infamous Toad Tower in the background.
Kienaide mada Kienaide
The final scene of the intro showed Kenji standing in the middle of a road looking at the Class Cards he has. He looked to his left and saw Anne walking over to him with a smile. Then Sprig came over to his right and jumped on Kenji's shoulders while Fou jumps on his head with a content smile on his face. Hop Pop and Polly walked/hopped over and joined the trio. The screen begins to pan downwards as it shows reflections not of the group but of legendary heroes of Earth's history.
The intro ends with the title of the story.
FATE / CALAMITY
Book 1: Amphibia
Chapter 17: Fated Snow Day
We start our day on The Plantar Farm with two dandelions peacefully float. It's a lovely warm day as ever, as we cut to a lovely warm Omelette with mushrooms, fried potatoes and vegetables can be seen peeping out of it, as Anne puts on the final touch: A basil leaf
"Perfecto!" Anne said the scene moves back to reveal to us that we are in the Plantar's kitchen: Anne is holding a pan and her freshly made Omelette, while Kenji with Fou sitting on his lap, Hop Pop and Polly sit at the dining table, curious as to what Anne is up to now, however there is a fourth person sitting next to Kenji.
The person has the appearance of a white-haired girl with yellow-green eyes, with a stitched-up scar on the right side her face and a natural one over the left eye. Her upper body is that of an adolescent, while her lower body is more mature like that of an adult, creating an odd juxtaposition to her appearance. She dons a black vest, black hot shorts, and black stockings with pink shoes. Both her arms are bandaged but only her left hand wears a glove. She has a purple oval-shaped 'O' on each of her shoulders. At the small of her back, she carries several sheathes that holds what looks like to be her knives. She also wears a tattered coat as a cloak over her outfit.
Now I know you maybe wondering, who the heck is this little girl here and where did she come from. That can be answered in a flashback...Don't judge me for this.
[Flashback]
It's a beautiful day outside as we see Sprig jumping all around the trees on a path towards the woods, while Kenji and Anne walked together behind him. Kenji left Fou back home so that the group have a little time together.
"I said it once and I will say it again. Why do we always hang out in the woods?" She asked Sprig who was still jumping in the trees. "We have a perfectly good living room back at the house."
"And I say once again: Where's the fun in that?" Sprig asked, having heard her. He then showed the two humans a ladybug crawling on a branch. "This place is full of nature. Whoo-hoo!" He went hopping off as a spider came and ate the ladybug, before dragging it away.
"Yeah, exactly," she said.
"Come on, Anne, it's not that bad," Kenji said, lightly nudging her with his arm. "Besides, it's a beautiful day out and we don't have any work."
"That's true." Anne said with a smile on her face as she, Kenji, and Sprig were sliding down some slippery tree branches when they heard distant noises. The trio broke from their intended trail and inspected some bushes.
"H-Hello?" spoke Anne. "Is anyone there?"
The bushes began to rustle. Prompting Anne, Kenji, and Sprig to step back. Something small, and fast was sprinting through the bushes. Soon, the rustling stopped...and, all was dead quiet.
"Um...m-maybe we should go-"
Suddenly, a single yellow eye gleamed within the bushes. "Hi, Spriiiiiiig... Aaaaaannne... Keeeeeeeeeenji."
"EEP!" exclaimed Anne, as Sprig jumped in her arms while Kenji draws his broadsword. Something finally stepped out of the bushes...revealed to be a Maddie carrying some branches.
"Oh, thank frog, it's only Maddie." said Anne, relieved it was someone they knew as Kenji lowers his sword to not scare the girl frog. Maddie stared blankly at the three, almost as if she was staring into each of their souls.
"What are you doing out here, Maddie?" asked Sprig.
Maddie blinked her eye. "Collecting sticks." answered the frog girl.
"I can see that." said Kenji, noting quite the bundle Maddie was carrying. "but..Why?"
Maddie darted her eyes nervously. "Um...n-no reason."
Anne, Kenji, and Sprig stared as Maddie continued to act shifty. It didn't help that she started to smile...which just came off as creepy.
"Oh...kaaay." spoke Anne. "So, did you happen to if anything odd lately?"
"NO." answered Maddie, quickly. "I d-did NOT see odd or strange lately. I am only here collecting sticks." She finished as her eye twitched.
"Uh, Mads?" spoke Kenji with a look of concern on his face. "Are you okay-"
Suddenly, something very, VERY big burst out from a nearby lake. The four looked up...and, gasped upon seeing a gigantic python looming over them.
((*HSSSSSSSSSS!*))
"AAH! G-G-GIANT SNAAAAAAKE!" exclaimed Anne, freaking out.
"AAAHH!" screamed Sprig and Maddie, who being frogs, VERY much feared a monster like this.
"RUN!" Kenji shouted as he, Anne, Sprig and Maddie all made a run for it...but despite its massive size, the Python was lightning quick, and blocked off all exits with its colossal body. The group had their backs to each other as the Python boxed them in.
"OH, NO, WE'RE TRAPPED!" exclaimed Sprig.
Anne grimaced, not sure how they were going to get out of this one alive as Kenji draws out his Arondight with his other hand going into a dual stance. Maddie however, had more fight in her, and pulled out tied bags of her 'magic powder'.
"COME AND GET ME, YOU OVERGROWN EARTHWORM!" screeched Maddie, who tossed one of her powder bags. The bag hit the Python square in the eye, spouting fungus over it.
((*SKREEEEEEEE!*)) roared the Python, angrily at the attacker who threw that.
"MADDIE!" exclaimed Anne, stunned. "What are you-!?"
The Python glared at the smaller female frog with its single good eye.
Maddie stood her ground and showed no fear: "I'M NOT SCARED OF YOU!" exclaimed Maddie.
"ONE DAY, I'LL OWN THIS SWAMP! AND YOU WILL BOW BEFORE "MADELINE FLOUR, THE BOG WITCH!"
The Python hissed in response...to which Maddie made a high pitched, croaking sound in response. Anne's usual brown eyes briefly turned bright blue as she felt a surge of courage.
"Oh, yeah! Maddie's got this snake's number!" exclaimed Anne as she pointed towards Maddie.
Sprig stared at Anne in confusion. "She does?"
Maddie tossed another bag of magic powder at the Python. This time, it hit its snout, closing its fanged jaws tight. As the giant snake thrashed around, trying to free itself. Maddie quickly turned and faced Anne and Sprig
"HURRY! Before it gets free!" She said as Anne, Kenji and Sprig nodded as the trio began to climb up the snake's body, and quickly scaled up a tall tree that it just happened to be pressed against. The three hid among the branches JUST as the Python snapped the fungus sealing its jaws apart.
"It... can't see us up here, right?" asked Sprig. The Python looked up, glaring straight at the four.
"You had to ask?" Kenji said as he gave Sprig a deadpan look, causing the young frog
"It can totally see us." said Anne, a pale expression on her face. Maddie reached for more bags of magic powder...only to fumble and drop them to the ground.
"Oh, crap." cursed Maddie, her confidence now gone.
"Oh, CRAP!?" exclaimed Anne. "Crap" does not sound good...CRAP IS ALWAYS BAD!"
((*HSSSSSSSS...*)) The Python leered, looking poised to strike.
The two teens' eyes widened, they held their breath as their entire, 16-year long life flashed before their eyes.
"Oh crap!" muttered Kenji, frozen in terror. With lightning-fast reflexes, the Giant Python lunged forward. The whole group screamed, feeling like time was slowing down in that exact moment.
There was then a blinding flash...and, Anne suddenly found herself on the ground with Sprig, Kenji, and Maddie. All three were a good several feet away from the Giant Python as it only just bit into the branch where they were in just seconds ago. The area begins to darken as a deep mist begins to build up around the area.
"What...THE HECK!?" Anne was beyond confused.
((*POW!*))
The Python screeched as it was suddenly hit by a black object, causing it to fall to its side with a loud thud. Anne, Kenji and Sprig looked to Maddie, who shrugged. "Don't look at ME. I'm not doing this!"
"LOOK!" exclaimed Sprig, pointing at the Python. "Someone else is up there!"
Anne and Kenji looked up and saw a hooded figure sliding down the snake's back not unlike how they and Sprig were sliding along the branches just recently.
Anne then gasped as the figure came into better view. Its height was smaller than hers, and clearly had normal, HUMAN hands.
"M-Marcy!?" inquired Anne.
The hooded figure leapt from the Python's tail and performed a somersault in mid-air. The mysterious figure then landed gracefully upon the ground, with a stance not unlike a ninja.
"Okay, no offense… but NO WAY that is Marcy." said Kenji as he saw the figure stood up. Sadly, Anne had to agree. If this was her friend, Marcy, she would've tripped halfway down, and landed face first into the ground. The Python finally recovered and directed its attention back to the now party of five.
"Oh, no. IT'S STILL COMING!" exclaimed Sprig.
"HEY KID! CATCH!" called out Kenji. Anne, Maddie, and Sprig watched as Kenji threw his combat knife to the hooded figure. She caught it with relative ease and responded with a visible smile and a peace sign. The figure then stepped forward, gripping the knife. As the Python hissed loudly, the hooded figure spun her knife in a reverse grip. She soon crouched low as if she was ready to launch herself forward.
The Python lunged, opening its fanged jaws wide to swallow its prey whole. However, as it did this... the mysterious figure shot forward to the right side of pythons' face as she dug her blade into the outside of the monster's mouth.
((*SKREEEEEEEEEEEE!*)) The python screeched, sounding like it was in agony. It shook its head as blood began dripping from its mouth. The two enemies stared each other down with no hesitation from each other. Finally, the Python retreated. returning to the lake from whence it came. Once it was gone, the hooded figure placed the knife into one of her holsters that she was carrying.
Anne, Kenji, and Sprig's jaws hung open, astonished at what they just saw. Maddie was also amazed but was more excited than shocked.
"YOU DID IT!" exclaimed Maddie, who hopped over to the figure. "That was INCREDIBLE! Oh, you MUST teach me how to do that!"
The figure was about to respond... if it weren't for the fact she was about to fall over. Anne was quick enough to catch her before she fell to the ground revealing a young female human, likely around 10 years old. The whole group were surprised that a young girl like this was able to take on that giant Python. After a few moments the girl begins to groan as she begins to open her eyes, looking around the group with her tired eyes before her gaze stops towards Anne. It was only for a moment before a small smile adorned her face.
"…Mama." The young girl said to Anne, who had a shocked look on her face, before she turned to Kenji, who also had a shocked look on his face. "Papa…" That was all the little girl said before she passed out.
…Eh?
Eh?
EEEEEEEEHHHHHHHH?!
After that scene, the group took the little girl the Plantar Farm to see if they had anything to help her, while Hop Pop and Polly were surprised to see another human. Before anyone can do anything, they heard what sounded like a small growl and looked at the girl who was awake now as she held her stomach, showing that she was hungry as she looked at them with a sad look on her face. After whipping something for her to eat which she did with gusto, Anne and Kenji decided to take Jack to the basement to have a private talk with her. Maddie understood and made her way back home while the Plantars were concerned for the two, But Anne was able to ease their worries saying they won't be long. After that, the two teenagers sat Jack down as Kenji started to ask her the simple question to start off with: "Can you tell us who you are and where you came from." The two were hoping that this girl was just a super awesome regular girl with skills with a knife.
However, when the girl introduces herself to them, that hope was shattered when she said.
"Servant: Assassin Jack the Ripper. Nice to meet you, Mama. Papa."
This…was crazy. Not only was this little girl who looked very young was a Rouge Servant but was also the Legendary Serial Killer of Whitechapel, London. When Kenji asked if she could tell them more about her, she obliged and begins to tell of her origins as Jack the Ripper.
From what Jack told them, she is one interpretation of the series of gory murders in 19th Century England. Her true nature is that of a collection of wraiths born from the aborted children of prostitutes in Whitechapel, London. Because she is a collection of wraiths and not a single entity, piercing her heart will not lead to her immediate death, but the spillage of said wraiths.
Once the number of aborted children who were disposed of in rivers reached the ten-thousands, the collection of resentment that the children shared eventually formed the shape of a human. Because she was created from children who had yet to even be born, she lacked common sense and morality, and simply killed prostitutes so she could return to the womb. To put it another way, this is the heretical Jack who was born from the "side of the victims".
After killing several women, she was given the name "Jack the Ripper," and rejoiced at having been given a name that she had been denied for so long. However, even they themselves do not know for certain whether they were "Jack the Ripper". After all, they are an amalgamation of evil spirits, so their memories are always vague and, even if they remember having killed prostitutes, it's uncertain who exactly they killed. What they kill as Assassin is not a specific individual, but rather the society that killed them, and the strong emotions they carry cannot be understood by any other hero, making them beyond salvation. Eventually, a detective (Magus) discovered that the culprit of the bizarre killings was of a magical nature and extinguished her.
She will likely perpetually reign as an eternal mystery and eternal darkness carved into the history of England. While her identity was never discovered, her knives were left behind after her death.
So, when finished her story, she was going to expect disgust from the two she called her parents, However Anne surprise her as she held her tightly. Jack was going to ask her what she was doing but stopped as Anne said something that surprised her.
"It's okay, Jack. It must of have been tough for you to go through all of that, but you don't have to worry anymore. We will be your parents from now on and we're going to make you the happiest daughter in the world." Anne said as faint wisps of blue energy seeps into Jack without anyone else knowing or seeing. It was like the energy was cleaning the negative energy that was within Jack to make it more pure and allowed her to feel and understand emotions once more.
Jack the Ripper didn't know how to respond as she hasn't felt like this before as tears begin to escape from her eyes and breathing began to increase as she return the hug as she lets loose a sorrowful cry as tears begin to flow freely down her cheeks as Anne smiled and held her closer. Kenji smiled as well as he joined in and held the two close as well. This…This is what Jack the Ripper truly wanted. No longer does she desire to return to her mother's womb, rather she obtain a warmth that is not just that of a mothers…
What she obtained is a family's warmth.
[End of Flashback]
"What do you call these again?" Polly asked as Anne placed 4 plates worth of Omelettes on the table, one for each of the residents living here are sitting.
"Omelettes!" Anne said as she slides the plate towards Hop Pop with a bit of pride and brag to Polly. "Very popular where I'm from!"
Hop Pop, however, is less sure.
"We'll see about that." Hop Pop as he takes a bite and considers the flavor. His eyes widen in wonder and awe; It is perfect
"Holy crabapples! Until today, I've been eating garbage!" He said awestruck as Polly also tries her omelettes, shoving her face in. She too is amazed.
"I see the future, and it's omelettes!"
Kenji jabbed at the food that had been plated out in front of him, it didn't look bad, but it was more the fact that he was suspicious of what it would taste like, "I don't know. How the world did you get the ingredients for this?"
Anne seemingly brushed off his worries and slid the omelet closer towards him smugly nudging him to just get it over with and eat it, "C'mon Kenji! I went out of my way to make you food, and you're not going to eat it?"
Whatever she was trying wasn't working in the slightest, but Kenji still reluctantly picked up his fork and ate the food alongside Jack, Polly and Hop Pop. A much to his own dismay at admitting the Anne had made a nice meal and giving in to her, Kenji couldn't lie and say it didn't taste bad.
What he didn't expect was the eagerness Anne had awaited his response to the meal, "This is good, a lot more palatable compared to all the stuff I've eaten here. 9/10."
"Fou!" Fou said as he took a piece of it from Kenji's plate as he begins to enjoy it as well.
Exhaling, Anne sagged her shoulders at his answer, but he had a smile on her face, "Of course, you just had to make it sound like that...but hey at least you like it." When she looked towards Jack, Anne noticed that she finished her plate. "Wow! You must have loved it."
"Mhmm. Mama's food is the best!" Jack said with a smile on her face, even though she had pieces of food on her face. Anne laughed a little as he pulls out a white cloth and begins to wipe her daughters face to clean it up, which Jack was very grateful.
"I still can't get over the fact that this girl called you her Mama and Papa." Hop Pop said as takes another bite of his Omelettes with Kenji nodding at his statement.
"I was surprised at first, but she really thinks of us as her parents. And from what I know of her history, she really needs a family. We'll be the ones to do it." Kenji said with a smile as he watches Anne and Jack laughing happily.
Before the conversation could continue any further, a high-pitched scream came from the top of the stairs, carried down from Sprig, he abruptly stopped at the food Hop Pop had," Oh, those look good," He remarked."
"Omelettes," He responded.
"Huh," Sprig said as he started screaming again as he stared his grandparent in the eyes, making sure he realized he was serious, "It's happening!"
"Are you sure?" Hop Pop said with a serious look on his face.
"Dead sure!"
"Soooo..." Kenji dryly turned to Polly on the other side of the table, "Is this a death to all Amphibia kind of thing, or Plantar family drama kind of thing?"
The pollywog shrugged it off rolling off, "Both...kind of?"
"Is this a "we've got to go now" kind of thing, or can I finish eating?" Anne asked Sprig who was quick to answer.
"Take it to go, Anne, 'cause we've got to go sound the alarm!" Sprig said
"Okay." Anne said as she places some containers on the table and starts to separate parts of the omelette into different containers "I'm just going to separate the stuff, so it retains the flavor and doesn't get soggy..." The rest of the family loudly berate her.
"MOVE, ANNE!"
"Come on, Anne, we better move on!"
"ANNE, MOVE!"
"Let's go, Anne!"
"C'mon, Mama!"
"Fou!"
"Okay, okay!"
After packing the food, Kenji with Fou on his head and Anne carrying Polly in one arm while holding one of Jack's hand followed Sprig and Hop Pop, who was sounding a weirdly well-tuned alarm with just his tongue. Clambering up and over the stones overtop the lake, following behind them into the town. Surprisingly, the rest of the citizens had grouped around it as well,
"How did...how did anyone hear that alarm?" Kenji asked Anne who shrugged it off, she'd grown accustomed to the world's random uncertainties and had mainly decided to just roll with it at this point,
"Now what is this all about Plantar?" Toadstool questioned, watching as the frog eventually simmered down and came to a halt.
"Everyone! This is the third morning in a row that temperature has dropped below the frog line, and you know what that means!"
"Hiber Day!" Hop Pop howled, a little too dramatically.
Even Anne was confused by what he'd said, she was sure that she'd never been told about something like that, especially considering the fact with how much of a fuss the town was making about it, "Hiber Day? The heck is that?"
"One day every year, the temperature drops so low that us frogs all go into instant hibernation. And when we wake up, we feel rejuvenated and alive!" Hop Pop said with a grin on his face.
Kenji felt a shiver go down his spine, he could sense the dark twist about to pop up. Glancing over to the small tadpole in Anne's hand, receiving a small nod from her, "That sounds pretty cool," Anne spoke.
"Well, it's not! Alongside the hibernation, one of us always ends up going missing at the end of it. Never to be seen again." Hop Pop said causing the teens to have a deadpan look on their faces.
"And there's the weird dark turn." Anne said as Kenji nodded
"Knew that was coming," Kenji said, sighing as he did, "It's never a dull moment with you guys."
"It's serious Kenji! We've lost plenty of frogs because of it. Look around you!" Sprig explained gesturing to townsfolks behind him, each one of them speaking their possible goodbyes to one another.
"Possible goodbye, Wally." A frog woman said next to Wally.
"Possible goodbye, Sally." Wally said to Sally as the two hugged.
"Possible goodbye, Ivy." Felicia said to her daughter as she hugs and kisses her head.
"Possible goodbye, Toadie." Mayor Toadstool said as he hugs the little frog.
"Possible goodbye, Archie." Mrs. Croaker said as she hugged the little spider who let loose a small whine.
The Plantar family was doing the same, with Anne and Kenji failing to see what the real problem was, "You're thinking the same thing right?" She queried, already knowing the answer.
"Yep, we can survive in the cold. And keep an eye on everyone." Kenji responded as Jack nodded.
"Mhmm! Let's do it." Jack said raising her fist into the air, causing Anne and Kenji to smile at her enthusiasm.
"Fou!" The little creature said mimicking Jack, causing the three to chuckle.
Hop Pop turned over to the three humans, spreading his arms out into a hug, "Of course, possible goodbye Anne, Jack, and Ken-"
"Not so fast!" Anne announced, stopping all three of them.
"What?"
"Harsh."
"Your kind of spitting on tradition Anne."
"One of you going missing every year isn't a tradition you should feel is being disrespected, besides this year that won't be happening..." Before Kenji could explain the situation, he was overturned by Anne who was speaking much louder.
"We'll be able to protect everyone, no one will go missing this year!" She yelled yet again, pumping her fist against her chest.
All of Wartwood seemed confused at the declaration, tilting their heads and squinting their eyes in suspicion of what she was talking about, "Uh I don't follow?" Wally asked in confusion.
"Uh hello, Fou, Jack, Kenji, and I are warm-blooded!" Anne said with a smile on her face.
"That's gross Anne," Sprig said casually.
"I watched you eat a fly off of Bessie's stable earlier this week..." Jack teased, smiling somewhat at Sprig's embarrassment.
"So, what! We're frogs, it's our way of life!" Sprig shouted as Jack blew a raspberry towards him.
"Calm yourself boy, just let them finish explaining," Hop Pop said as the pink frog went quiet with a grunt.
"If we're warm-blooded than we won't freeze!" Anne finished, taking a stance against the town statue, "And under our watch, no one will disappear again."
"Till something happens," Kenji murmured under his breath, smiling as she whacked her hand against the statue. "Like that."
"Hehe. Silly Mama!" Jack said with a smile on her face as Kenji rubbed the top of her head.
"Fou!" Fou said as he takes his place back on top of Kenji's head.
On one hand, he was fine with looking after the town, as Hop Pop was explaining; they could just meet in one place, and it would be easy to keep an eye on all of them. What worried him though, was what the mysterious force was that did take only one of the frogs every year, and if was one of the worlds more horrific creatures, would they even be able to stop it?
He was also unsure on whether Anne could even handle the fact that she had to help look after so many people at once, someone as impulsive and fretful as her was bound to get bored of simply watching the town.
Suddenly, Polly called for Kenji, Fou, and Jack as she, Anne and the rest of the Plantar's were heading off. "Are you two sure you're alright with this? Looking after the whole town is a lot of responsibility." Hop Pop questioned.
"I mean, you're all in one place and not moving right? It shouldn't be too hard to watch every single one of you. Only thing I'm concerned about is...the cold."
"Not a huge fan of it either huh?" Hop Pop commented getting a sheepish nod in return.
"I like feeling refreshed and able to move about, but from my own thoughts the idea of a chilly, hard to move around in climate just seems awful..."
Anne gave him a playful slap on the back, a confident look on her face, "Don't sweat it Kenji, I'll get you some warm clothes. I've got some mittens and a hat you can borrow; we've got this! I feel like this is the moment that everything has been leading up to!"
"Uh Mama?"
"Don't worry sweetie I will get some warm clothes for you when we get back to the farm." Anne said as she continued her dialogue. "All of my senses feel heightened, as if I can do anything and see everything in my surrounding! You feel the same Kenji?"
"H-hey Anne? You may want to turn around."
When she heard that from Kenji, Anne looked around her to see Kenji slightly shaking and chattering on the spot while Jack looked at her Papa with concern with Fou looking at him with the same look on his face as Jacks, "W-We've got a b-bit of a problem," He stammered, not able to get out a proper sentence due to his shuddering teeth.
Beside him, were Polly, Sprig and Hop Pop all completely frozen in ice, "I t-think H-Hiber Day came early, dammit I knew I would hate the cold, my e-entire b-body feels numb," Kenji snarled, trying his best to warm himself up.
"Papa…" Jack said as she wraps her small arms around Kenji to try and warm him up with Fou hugging the top of his head to help him out too, which the young man was thankful for.
"This is bad, everyone's separated across the entire town, it's going to take ages for us to-" Acting on impulse, Anne pulled up on the ice-covered frogs, discovering that they were in fact surprisingly light to carry. "Oh. Oh, wow. This is very light."
"Alright, let's get all of them into the town square," Kenji said, as Jack carries Polly in her arms, leaving Sprig and Hop Pop to Kenji and Anne. Speaking of which, the young man wasn't faring to well in the temperature,
"And then we'll make sure to get you some warm clothes, promise." Anne said as Kenji nodded in gratitude for what Anne said.
"Thanks," Kenji said as he really did appreciate it, unfolding his red and numb fingers out from the tucked in position they were in and picking up the even colder feeling frog.
Soon enough, the three of them had collected each member of Wartwood, placing them on either side of the statue. It hadn't been that much of an egregious task considering the weight of them all and the fact that none of the frogs had managed to get that far away from the center of town.
Kenji rubbed his mitten covered hands together, attempting to warm them up even more than they already were, Anne had also lent him her spare gym jacket which had been doing a good job at keeping him warm. Luckily for Jack, they were able to find some spare cloths the Plantars to help keep her warm as well. Fou took a new spot as he was snug in the opening of Kenji's gym jacket.
Anne hobbled from behind a house, carrying the final frog and placing it down, "That's the last of them, which was surprisingly easy, look at me go, town protector!" As she posed, Jack and Fou giggles as Kenji got in her way shaking his head at what she was doing.
"Just...stop."
After a few minutes had passed, Kenji, Fou, Jack, and Anne sat beside each other on a log that was spaced out enough to give them a good overview of all the frogs,
"So…What happens now?" Anne questioned, looking over to Kenji, who had weirdly serious gaze fixed on the frozen amphibians.
"Now…We wait and watch," He replied sternly as Anne, Fou and Jack nodded.
It hadn't even been a couple more minutes before Anne had grown bored of simply staring at the frogs, "Want to do something Kenji?" She asked, not getting an immediate answer from the boy, "Are you listening?"
"Y-Yes, but right now we need to watch them. Something is going to come and take one of them, we must be ready to stop it!" Kenji explained steeling his gaze once again.
"Fou!" Fou said as he took vigilance as well.
'Uhhh, he needs to let loose a little. I've seen him messing around with us lately, why's he being so serious suddenly, guess that is just how he is when it comes to things like this.' Anne thought as she looked around to the frogs and notices that Kenji does have a point.
She still needed something to do however, there wasn't much time until she be completely bored and tired of the entire ordeal. That was until she spotted Sprig amongst the group of solidified frogs and then looked towards Jack who was humming a little tune as she was playing with Fou for a bit, 'If I'm going to stay the town protector, then I'll need someone to preoccupy me.'
Unbeknownst to Kenji and Fou, Anne along with Jack snuck off and away from the log, slyly collecting Sprig as she did, carrying him all the way over to the Plantar household. There they begin to defrost him near a fire and with towels as the ice begins to drip around into the pan, he was placed in.
"Phew! This is harder than I thought." Anne said to herself as the ice begins to chip "Thaw already, Sprig."
"Please thaw Sprig." Jack said with a plea as she wants to play with the frog boy as well and wanted to make Mama happy as well. Sure enough, the ice around Sprig shattered and was set free. However, when you take a good look at him, he looked like he was in a drunken stupor.
"Whoa! Where am I? What's going on?" Sprig said slurry as Anne and Jack looked at him with glee.
"Sprig! Boy, am I glad to see you, buddy." Anne said but soon notice that something was off with him. "Uh...You okay, dude?"
"I's awake, yes?" Sprig said in a slur as Anne and Jack looked at each other in concern for the little pink frog for talking like that.
"Yeah?" Jack said in an unsure tone in her voice as Sprig turns around in the pan.
"Okay! Let's thaw out the others." Sprig said as he was about to step out of the pan but slammed face first into the floor as the pan flipped onto his back. Anne and Jack quickly helped him as they took the pan off his back.
"Okay, this might have been a bad idea. You frogs don't seem to do well in the cold," Anne cringed internally at her friends flopping about in the water puddle from the melted ice.
"Why you say that? Water angels," Sprig spewed out, not sounding any better than before.
'Maybe I shouldn't have defrosted him, what is Kenji going to do when he finds out?'
"Papa is going to be mad at us." Jack said as Anne looked at her with a nod.
"More like disappointed. That's what," Kenji said, his voice now had a much darker undertone to it as the trio returned to where he was and was shock to see Sprig out of hibernation and looking very messed up, "Why would you let Sprig out Anne? He's supposed to hibernating!"
"Fou!" Fou said as he also gave a look of disappointment towards Anne and Jack.
Anne blew a raspberry, seemingly blowing off his worries, "Stop being such a stick in the mud Kenji, we can still look after Wartwood, there's nothing wrong with taking a break."
"What happened to being responsible!?" He exclaimed back, trying his best not to get frustrated.
"I am! Just in my own town protector way, if I'm bored, I won't be able to do anything will I?" Anne argued, getting no reply from Kenji. He had already left the household and was halfway down the path,
"You can have fun, but I'm going to be doing the job we said we were doing. Making sure nobody gets taken, it's the responsible thing we were supposed to do." With that said, Kenji wrapped himself in a thick blanket, continuing his watch as Anne, Jack and Sprig, looked at him with concern.
And so, with much hesitation and reluctance. Kenji and Fou was forced to keep watch on the frogs of Wartwood as Anne, Jack and a disheveled Sprig begun to mess around, throwing snowballs at one another, sledding down a hill with a large wooden board, and creating snowmen that soon collapsed under one another.
In all honestly there wasn't any real harm to it, all they were doing was playing in snow and it wasn't even that far away from the center of town. It had been a good hour at this point, with Anne, Jack and Sprig having fun, with Kenji and Fou doing nothing but sitting on a snow-covered log, freezing in their own misery, he really did hate the cold. More than that, he really didn't see any harm in him getting up and having a small break.
That was until they approached them again, this time with Anne and Sprig holding both Mrs. Croaker and Wally in either hand, while Jack looked on in concern. "What are you two doing? Put them back."
They didn't stop however, acting out the two of them in a relationship. Kenji thought it was stupid, in what way could this be fun, all they were doing was poorly impersonating either one of the frogs; yet he still let a chuckle slip out his mouth.
"Damn it," He audibly swore, due to his own annoyance.
"Ohhh! Papa said a bad word!" Jack said causing Kenji to sigh in defeat.
"Sorry Jack. Won't happen again." Kenji said causing the little girl to smile.
Smugly grinning back at him, Anne beckoned him over to them, "Come on Kenji, you've been sitting here for a while, just relax. You can afford to take a little break," She continued to bargain with him, first getting him off the log.
"As much as I want to Anne, I can't. I have to watch them, we have to watch them, they're counting on us to keep them safe." Kenji explained, it wasn't because he wanted the town to respect him more than they already did, he and Anne had made it his responsibility to look after them all.
Anne couldn't help but feel a little guilty at what he'd said, but what was the point in just sitting by for hours on end, when it was much easier to enjoy themselves and be a protector, "Kenji. You just to cut back a bit, and stop being so serious all the time, that's your problem."
She sounded a little harsher this time, letting go off him and picking up some more of the frogs, getting help from Sprig to tie them up together. He didn't know what it was, but it was weird amalgamation of the frogs, with the rope soon loosening and collapsing all the frogs,
"Woah, what are you doing. You're not having fun anymore, this is just irresponsible, what kind of town protector messes about with the helpless people she's protecting." Kenji said with a huff as he tried to pick up the most frogs he could, not noticing the moody, annoyed stare Anne was giving him as he left.
"Well at least I'm not acting like some robot, you're too busy being responsible that you're not even trying to have fun. When I know fully well that you can, so stop being so serious and ruining it for everyone." Anne shouted as Jack looked between the two in concern.
He didn't stop at what she said, still choosing to return to the middle of Wartwood to put everybody back where they were. As he placed Polly into her bucket however, Fou started to growl as something blurred through the snow, kicking up a flurry of it as it did. He draws his broadsword and Arondight as he got into position from the creature that lurks beneath the snow.
Flanking up and over the several piles of snow packed atop the houses circling the area, the pale white creature finally veered it's long, snake like head, baring its fangs back at Kenji. It was giant albino weasel, a very large one, much like other creatures of Amphibia, with a thin jaw armed with long, sharp fangs. Their fur is light pink with a white underbelly. They have a dark cyan-blue tongue. On their heads, they feature small, red eyes, and six whiskers. Their jaw can open to considerable amounts to catch its prey. The weasel is also quite flexible and able to move quickly with ease on their four legs. Each paw features three sharp claws
It didn't seem to have its eyes set on him however, no it was more locking its piercing red eyes at the tadpole behind him. As it reared forward so did Kenji, making sure he wasn't going to let it reach Polly.
"Let's do this."
Anne returned to the group where all the citizens of Wartwood were supposed to be, preparing to do a headcount, "Sprig, have you seen Kenji or Fou anywhere?"
"Yep!" The pink frog replied enthusiastically, "I've seen them at the fountain and back at home, in the store. I've seen Kenji and Fou in all sorts of places."
"So that's a no." Jack said
Not impressed with the answer, Anne continued with her headcount of the frogs, stopping at the empty bucket that Polly was supposed to be placed in.
"Polly, no! She's gone!" Anne said with eyes widened as she and Jack begin to look for her in worry.
'Kenji was right, what kind of protector am I..'
Speaking of which, it was strange that he and Fou had disappeared as well. Not to mention the set of tracks leading away from the town, clearly belonging to one of Amphibia's numerous creatures.
"C'mon Sprig we have to get those them back, no matter what!"
"Is there something wrong with Polly?" He quizzed back, a derpy smile over his face. This caused Anne and Jack to sigh at the choice of releasing Sprig from hibernation.
The group followed the clearly imprinted tracks in the snow, with the pawprints having sunk deeper into the ground, making it even more visible to where they were. Anne was making sure she could keep on moving, she couldn't let whatever had taken Polly, Kenji, and Fou eat them, it was just like he said, it was her responsibility as well.
"I smell a Polly, right there in that creepy cave," Sprig pointed out, droopily beginning to stumble over towards it.
"Of course, it is."
Once they entered, Anne could immediately spot a pile of bones just casually lying around it.
"You know, no matter how long I'm in this world, I'll never get used to the piles of bones just lying around." Anne said as Sprig suddenly stopped as he pointed upwards.
"Hey, that icicle looks like Polly!" The young frog glanced upwards to his sister placed up into the wall roof.
"Ah! Polly!" Anne said in surprise.
"How did she get up there? Is she magic?" Sprig asked in a drunk happy tone.
Before anything, the snow from below begins to shift as a giant snow weasel shot up from the snow and lunges viciously towards Anne. She reacted just as quickly though, reeling a frozen bone from out of the snow and trapping it between its large jaw, keeping it firmly in place. Just as it was about to snap through the bone and possibly Anne all the same, a familiar black-haired figure leaped from atop the ceiling, completely encased in frost that was starting melt off his clothes, with Fou still riding in his coat as if his life depended on it.
"Sprig! Jack! Hurry up and get Polly, we don't have much time!" Kenji ordered now pulling the bone back against the snow-white beast's mouth. Jack nodded as she and Sprig head towards Polly as quick as they can.
"KENJI!" Anne yelled, relief pooling off her words.
"Yo, Anne" He stated simply, grunting as a continued to tussle with the creature, "Wouldn't mind if you helped out here Anne!"
"Fou!" Fou said as he was hanging on for dear life. Anne nodded as she begins to help the two with the giant snow weasel.
"Hey Polly, stop dancing around so much I'm trying to save you!" Sprig spoke, seconds away from drifting off and collapsing off the roof. Luckily Jack was quick enough to grab him before he hurt himself. Hearing the frog, the snow weasel managed to throw Kenji from its back and on top of Anne, scuttling over to Sprig and Jack, revealing its large, husky, sharp toothed mouth.
"Ooohhh. Pointy." Sprig said as he poked one of the fangs as Jack pulled him back, so he didn't lose an arm when the snow weasel snapped its jaws at him.
"We've got to get to it, now that its distracted I can hit it!" Kenji described, sneaking towards the mammal, ready to strike it so that they can get Polly and get the heck out of here. Anne on the other hand, heard a sound coming from the covering section of the cave, peaking into it she noticed three of the creatures' children, presumably crying out from hunger, huddling together for warmth. Seeing this, the snow weasel leaped from the spot it stood in and in front of Anne, screeching at her to get away wrapping its tail around her babies, growling in a protective stance.
"So, that's why it took Polly and had been taking frogs from before, it has to feed not only itself but her babies," Kenji observed, gently throwing the frozen weapon away, Anne did the same, as the young man walked up next to Anne. "But if we take Polly then they'll have nothing to eat."
Anne, Fou and Jack nodded as they know if they do this, the animals would more than likely starve to death. However, Anne had an idea as she zipped open her bag and began preparing the same food they'd eaten earlier that morning, once she'd finished Anne timidly slipped it over to the snow weasel, who took a whiff. Lucky for them, it let loose a purr as it took the food and began feeding it to her family.
"Holy crap, I can't believe that worked," Kenji gasped, his mouth aghast, Anne didn't seem to be shocked by it though.
"I guess the power of omelets are universal, now let's get going before it decides to eat us," Dusting some of the snow out of her brown hair, Anne pulled Kenji with her and watched as Sprig and Jack broke Polly from off the roof, landing directly in their arms.
"My face feels squishy," Sprig smiled giddily, flailing his arms about.
Kenji and Fou gave Anne and Jack a disapproving glance as the two sighed, "Yeah, yeah I know, I shouldn't have thawed him out."
"Sorry Papa." Jack said in a sad tone in her voice. Kenji knows that Jack still has much to learn so he pats her on the head to let her know that things are okay and not to worry about it.
Eventually, after a few remaining hours had passed and most of the snow had melted, Anne, Kenji, Jack, Fou, and Sprig all waited for the moment that the temperature dipped back above the frog line and the sun finally shined back through the clouds.
Once it did, the rest of Wartwood finally began to thaw out of the ice, "We made it through the freeze," Hop Pop cheered shaking the water off himself.
"We're alive!" Polly yelled all the same.
Just as they were about to cheer for Anne, she cut them off, "Don't bother cheering, I was a terrible protector for you guys, it's Kenji that deserves your praise. I did nothing but goof off, I even thawed Sprig out because I was bored."
"I'm fine." Sprig said in a slur with a thumbs up.
"And worst of all, Polly almost got eaten by a giant weasel."
"SAY WHAT?!" Polly shouted in alarm from what she just heard.
"I'm no town protector. I'm just an irresponsible kid." Anne said with her head down.
"Mama…" Jack said as Kenji approaches the Thai American girl and places a hand on Anne's shoulder causing the young woman to look at him with wide eyes from the look of concern from Kenji's eyes.
"Anne, you can't just blame yourself. You were right, I took it way too seriously, and I'd be lying by saying that I didn't want to have fun as well. Not to mention the fact that I did fall asleep for two hours, besides you still saved her in the end," Kenji intervened, going against Anne's claims.
"Yeah but..."
It was Hop Pop's turn to step into Anne's words, "Anne, the fact that you admitted that proves that you were a good town leader, you took responsibility and owned up to your mistake. Not to mention that this is the first year that no one's gone missing!" This caused the town to cheer for teens who were grateful to the townsfolk for their understanding.
As the noise settled down, Anne placed a hand on Kenji's shoulder, trying to catch his attention, "Look dude, I'm sorry about what I said, you were right in the first place, I should've been more responsible about it and for the record I don't think you're a robot," She apologized, seeming genuinely guilty about what she said.
"You know, I think I have something to pay you back," Kenji grinned, accepting the apology crouching down to the floor. Anne hadn't seen him bawl up the few remaining clumps of snow, so as Kenji got back up to above her eye level, he tossed the ball of snow right at her face, "Yeah, I think we're even now."
Anne wiped the frost from off her face, kneeling to the floor clamping the snow into her palms thrusting it forward and directly into his stomach, "I'm not just going to let you of that easily."
Before they knew it, the two of them along with Jack and Fou had started a massive snowball fight that spanned throughout the entirety of Wartwood, all of them enjoying the end of their Hiber Day for the first time in years.
