Prompt # by chance_lie: "Pregnant Donna encountered an accident and when Harvey heard of it, he was beyond worried and delivered the line, "Where is my wife?!" Or it can be anything else, but worried Harvey saying, "Where is my wife?!" must be followed."
Getting out of bed that morning is no straightforward task for either of us, but especially for Donna. She's in the first months of her pregnancy, and that means morning sickness in the shape of daily torture for her. Sleeplessness that keeps her awake at night doesn't help either. And both things together make an explosive combo that begs her not to leave that comfy warm bed. Never.
It's Harvey who convinces her that morning to get out of there when he opens the window blind and tells her that the city is covered in snow. And she can't help feeling excited, because she loves that magic since she was a child. She needs to see it.
It's one of the last days of work before the Christmas holiday, and that means everyone is running around with files, screams, cups of coffee, boxes, and nerves, because getting everything ready before Christmas seems to be an impossible mission.
In the middle of that chaos, Donna and Harvey gently collide head-on, walking in one hallway. "I'm sorry," they say at the same time, giggling.
"It's okay," he murmurs and rubs her arm. "But you know you need to be more relaxed."
"Yes, sure." She snorts. "While everyone is crazy, I should sit aside and not help."
"No, I didn't say that," he says serenely. "Just take things a little more calmly."
"We're okay Harvey, don't worry."
"Are you sure?" he asks, putting his hand on her belly.
She grins, putting her hand above his. "I'm sure. Actually, we're going to buy something for lunch now. Your baby is craving Christmas cookies from the store near here."
"That doesn't sound like a lunch." He replies, frowning.
"I know." She rolls her eyes. "I'll eat something nutritious first."
"Ok," he replies and kisses her lips briefly. "I'd love to join you, but I have a meeting in 5 minutes."
"It's ok. I can go by myself… and I'll try to keep a cookie for you."
"We both know it will be a failed attempt."
Donna laughs, shrugging because her husband is right. He kisses her while stroking her belly and then they separate, each going their own way.
30 minutes later, Harvey is waiting for Jamie, one of his clients, in his office.
"Sorry," Jamie says as he gets in. "There's been an accident near here, and between the accident and the snow, getting there on time has been impossible."
"An accident? Do you know what happened?" he asks, immediately standing up and pulling his cell phone out of his pocket.
"I guess some car has lost control. You know the snow can be treacherous."
He takes a deep breath, making a futile effort to remove catastrophic scenarios from his mind. "Has it happened near here?"
"Yes, across the street from the cookie shop that's near here."
Harvey's face turns absolutely pale and for a moment, he forgets to breathe, feeling his whole body shaking. "Do you know if was there a golden car?" he asks in a trembling voice, almost afraid to say it out loud.
"Yes, I think so."
"Damn it!" Harvey yells and, without explanation, runs out of the place.
"Harvey, wait!" his client follows him.
"My wife was going there and our car is golden, and she's pregnant," he says, with a thread of voice, unable to stop running to go to find her.
"There appeared to be no serious injuries. Breathe Harvey, she will need you calmly."
He sighs. "I have to go."
"Of course, go."
Harvey doesn't miss another second talking to that man and just runs to the nearest exit. The elevator is on another floor, and there is no way he can wait for it, so he goes down the stairs. 7 floors. He doesn't know if the difficulty breathing is because of nerves and fear, or if it's because he's running down the stairs in desperation. But he doesn't have time to solve that stupid mystery now. All he cares about is finding Donna, who isn't picking up his thousands of calls. He wants to trust what Jamie has told him, that there are no serious injuries. But he knows very well what a hefty blow can make to a pregnancy and just thinking about it, his soul trembles.
It wasn't so easy for them to conceive. They started trying after their first wedding anniversary. Being aware of her age, Donna had run medical examinations to find out what the possibilities were, and the results showed they could try naturally with a good percentage of chance of success.
But the months happened and with the beginning of each period, things became more complicated to manage for both of them, but especially for Donna, who couldn't avoid the feeling that her body was failing, making her feel completely useless. In front of that, Harvey also had medical exams. Maybe he was the problem, but there seemed no medical reason to explain why they were failing.
The doctors recommended them calm and relaxation because that could also influence how their bodies respond. But they couldn't relax. They knew they didn't have so many years to try, and that was too much of a burden on Donna's back, so Harvey proposed to try a treatment. He could afford it if she was willing to do it. He knew it wasn't ideal, but it was a way to achieve it.
She thought about it for a few weeks, during which she did a lot of research on the subject. She needed to know what she and her body were exposing herself to. And although she knew it wouldn't be easy, she accepted. She really wanted to become a mother and wanted to turn her husband into a father, so they did.
The first treatment didn't work, but the second did. And that's the baby her wife now carries in her belly, and that something might happen to that baby, to their baby, freezes Harvey's blood.
When he walks through the front door of the building, the cold hit him and that's when he realizes he's wearing only a shirt, but it's not something he cares about right now, just starts running toward that damn shop, praying to a God who isn't sure that exists.
Too many hurried, busy Christmas shoppers cross his way and he swears he wants to kick the kids who cross his path, but he knows he can't. Still, he does his best to get there as soon as possible. He even slips twice because of the snow, but he doesn't let anyone help him get up. He just stands up by himself and continues his way. Even if it's only 3 streets away, they look eternal.
He still tries to call her, but Donna doesn't pick up, which only intensifies the catastrophic scenarios in his mind.
A nice old lady stops him, worried to see him running just with a shirt in the middle of the snow. "Sir, are you okay? Do you need anything?"
He takes a deep breath, forced to stop. "There's been an accident here nearby and I think my wife is there."
"Yes, I was inside the cookie shop when it happened. There didn't seem to be any serious injuries sir, take a breath. His wife must be fine."
"I need to see her. She's pregnant. I need to be with her." He exhales, running again.
The lady lets him pass by and covers a slight smile with her red scarf, thinking that the face of despair and fear of that man could only mean one thing: He is madly in love with that woman. And at nearly 80, she's glad to see that young people are still finding love.
He stops running only when he finds a "do not pass" tape and two ambulances next to a police vehicle and some people there. He quickly dazzles the golden car and feels a shiver traveling through his body. The car doesn't look damaged, but Donna isn't there. And that scares him like hell.
Without even asking permission, he goes under the tape and walks as fast as he can, shouting, "Where is my wife?" feeling how blood pumps too hard in his body, feeling his own beating ringing in his ears.
A policewoman stops him, gently putting her hand on his chest. "Sir, you can't be here."
"Where is my wife?" he repeats, tears threatening to overflow his eyes, still trying to walk, although the woman prevents him.
"Please, describe your wife to me."
He nods, on the verge of hyperventilating. "She's a redhead, she's wearing a black dress and coat, she's almost four months pregnant-"
The policewoman nods. "I saw a redhead woman. She was in an ambulance a few minutes ago, but she didn't seem to have any injuries. Take a breath sir, I'll take you with her."
"Please," he begs, and a tear goes down his left cheek.
"Follow me, sir."
The seconds Harvey walks behind the policewoman, without getting to where his wife is, feels almost as long as every year he denied how he felt about her. Tears become uncontrollable when he sees her sitting in an ambulance with its back doors open. She's wearing an oxygen mask, a warm blanket over her shoulders, and one of her hands is resting on her belly. Harvey doesn't listen to what the policewoman says, because instinct wins, and runs to his wife, who smiles, relieved to see him running toward her.
"We're fine, Harvey," Donna says, after lifting her mask for when he's just two steps away from her. "Breath, we're fine." She sobs, doing her best to stay in one piece and not let him see the panic she still feels. She doesn't want to scare him, but judging from his face, he's already freaking scared, and that makes her heart squeeze a little more.
Harvey can't say anything. He feels how his entire body loosens in less than a second and feels he loses balance when relaxing. He walks the two steps to reach her and wraps her against him, kissing her head and rubbing her back. "God, Donna." He sobs and smooches her forehead.
"I'm sorry, Harvey," she still sobs, feeling her whole body tremble in her husband's arms.
"No, you don't have to apologize." He responds, swallowing a ball of distress that forms in his throat. "It's okay, just breathe, you're okay. I got you." He sighs, attempting to hide his own panic and support her. "Why are you wearing the mask?"
"I was very nervous and my oxygen saturation wasn't very well. But I'm better now. I had an ultrasound, and they said the baby is fine. That relaxed me, at least a little." She pauses and for the first time in all those minutes, she allows herself to shed some tears. "Either way, they will take me to the clinic for a more thorough exam." She adds and raises her head to look at him and he carefully dries her tears.
"Okay, that's good." He responds, staring at her, still holding her against her, processing all the information his wife just gave him.
"It is." She nods and exhales, seeking some calm, but it isn't enough, so she asks for something more. "Can you kiss me?" she whispers. "Please."
The corners around his eyes crinkle as a sweet smile appears on his lips. "Always," he mutters, leaning toward her until gently leans his lips against hers, while their eyes close. He tenderly captures her upper lip between his own, sucking gently and both feel their bodies being invaded for some peace after so much tension. Donna clings to him with all her strength, letting contact with him calm her blood flow, her heartbeat, her breathing still a little hectic, and especially her mind, because although it didn't take too many minutes until they did that ultrasound, they had been more than enough to imagine the worst outcome. All that time alone had felt like a nightmare, and everything had been worse when they helped her out of the car and she realized she forgot her phone inside. She needed Harvey with her, and now he's here. "I love you," he murmurs against her lips, rubbing them.
"We love you too," she replies and kisses him again. Harvey's lips draw a smile when he feels her lips wrapping around his lower lip and his hands climb by her back, until landing on her jaw, with his thumbs caressing her cheeks. It feels really good to have her against him after having imagined the most terrible things. "Wait…" she frowns. "You're freezing. Where is your jacket?"
He chuckles. "Jamie told me there was an accident in front of this store and I just ran off." He tells her and kisses her again. "Do you wanna tell me what happen?"
She nods. "I got stuck in the middle. The car in front of me lost control and crashed into the car in front of it. I had to brake fast, but the floor was so slippery that I couldn't do it properly and our car hit a pole. The car has a dent in the front. I'm sorry for that." She sobs, her lips shaking.
"Hey…" he whispers. "Seriously, do you think I'm worried about the stupid car right now?" he says and kisses her forehead, and then sits next to her. Donna shares her blanket with him. "Put this on again," he says, rearranging her mask.
"I was so afraid," she weeps, dropping her head on his shoulder.
"I know, and so do I." He murmurs against her hair, rubbing her back, and putting his other hand on her belly. "I can't bear the thought of something bad happening to you." Donna wants to answer, but the doctor who had treated her approaches them. "Harvey Specter," he tells her, extending his hand to greet her. "Her husband."
"Nice to meet you," the doctor responds, shaking his hand.
"Do you have a blanket for him?" Donna asks, moving her mask again. "We work here nearby and when he learned about the accident, he ran out of his own." She says tenderly, and Harvey blushes.
"Of course," the doctor enters the ambulance and hands him another blanket. "We can go to the clinic now if you want to."
"Please," she begs. "Can you go for my handbag? It's still in the car." She asks him.
"Of course," he replies, kisses her, and goes for her stuff, wrapped in the blanket.
On arrival at the clinic, they take Donna in a wheelchair to an examination room, and Harvey, of course, goes with her. He doesn't think about moving on her side. Not having gone with her to that cookie shop is a thought that is torturing him enough. He doesn't know if he could have prevented the accident, but at least she wouldn't have been alone. From just thinking of Donna, alone and frightened amid that chaos, panic once again took over his body. So no, he won't go away to his wife and their baby.
Donna is lying on a stretcher, while her husband is sitting in a chair next to her. Their hands are intertwined over her belly. She no longer wears the mask and has her head turned to Harvey's side, who tangles his fingertips on her hair while looking at her. They have been several minutes like this, in silence, just staring at each other, looking for the calm they need in the other, and also waiting for some doctor to enter through that door.
"Always my biggest fear was that something bad will happen to you," he murmurs, breaking the silence. "And I didn't think this fear could multiply toward another person." He exhales and moves his thumb over her belly. "We're beginning a journey of concern until the last day of our lives."
She chuckles. "I know that. It's scary." She responds, as Harvey tilts over her and smooches her forehead. "I need a doctor here, right now."
"Do you want me to go out and get one?"
"No," she mumbles, shaking her head. "Stay here, with us," she begs, squeezing his hand.
"Always," he whispers, against her head and goes down with kisses on her face, until reaching her lips. "Always," he repeats and she nods.
The doctor gets in a few more minutes later and after checking the vital signs and doing a gynecological check on Donna, and repeating that everything seems to be fine, which is a great relief for the future parents, the doctor sets everything for another ultrasound.
As always, the cold gel and the pressure of the appliance on her belly are uncomfortable for Donna, who squeezes hard on Harvey's hand, while looking for him with her gaze and he gives her a reassuring smile.
"Please, say something," she begs the doctor after a few seconds of silence.
The doctor chuckles. "Maybe you'd better listen to it yourselves." He says and raises the volume, causing the room to quickly be invaded by their baby's strong and sped-up beats, which makes them explode in tears of relief. "Everything is perfect, nothing to worry about." The doctor says and points them to the screen where the baby is. He doesn't resist kissing his wife, as he repeats how much he loves her, over and over again, and she just laughs, because all she feels at that moment is happiness. "I think the baby wants to give you a Christmas gift..." the doctor interrupts them, seeing that the baby has moved and opened its legs. "Do you wanna know if your baby is a boy or a girl?" Donna and Harvey open their eyes to surprise, looking at each other and both say yes at the same time, turning their heads toward the screen. The doctor zooms a little on the screen and tells them where to look, but they can't decipher it, so he has to say it. "It's a girl, congratulations."
Donna and Harvey's smiles grow bigger than their own faces, as they sob, staring completely in love at their daughter on the screen. "Another redhead like you? I'm completely screwed." He whispers to her.
She just giggles and strokes his cheek. "I guess I'll be the one to set the boundaries here because this little girl will do everything she wants with her daddy." He giggles because he knows she's right and comes over to kiss her lips.
While everything was fine, the doctor had recommended to Donna a few days of rest, which had forced them to cancel their trip to Cortland, to spend Christmas with the redhead's parents, and that had made her a little sad.
So, Harvey did his best to give his wife a Merry Christmas. He bought her more cookies from that store than she could eat during the entire holiday. He gave her Christmas candles so she could take warm baths in the scents of the season. He bought her favorite Christmas pies. He hugged, cuddled, and kissed her as much as he could. He let her choose all the Christmas movies she wanted to watch in his arms, and then he let her sleep there as well.
And in addition, he added a gift that he hadn't planned for her under the Christmas tree.
"This is the last one," Harvey tells Donna, giving her a small box, having given her two gifts earlier.
"Another gift?" she giggles, grabbing the box.
"Just what my girl deserves."
She blushes. "Thank you, Harvey."
She puts the little box on her lap and carefully opens it. Her eyes immediately fill with tears seeing what's inside: a pair of baby shoes, white, with drawings of tiny strawberries.
Donna hooks them around her fingers and rests them on her belly. "Merry Christmas, honey. Daddy just got you your first present." She murmurs, looking down. "They're beautiful, Harvey." She mutters, and when she looks back at her husband, he is about to take a picture of her with his phone.
"Let me take a picture of you like this, please," he says, knowing that she will complain that she just woke up.
Donna smirks. "Okay."
He takes several photos, and to him, they're all beautiful, although Donna doesn't agree as much. But there is one that becomes the favorite of both: it's just Donna's growing belly, with the little shoes hooked on her fingers and resting there.
"It's time for everyone to know that we are having a little girl and we're insanely happy about it. Merry Christmas!" Donna posts on her Instagram feed and comments from all of their friends quickly appear down there.
rossmike "Oh my god, Harvey, now there will be two women to make you drool. I can't wait to see how another redhead drives you crazy. Congratulations!"
rachelzane "God… Donna, I'm sobbing. This is the best Christmas gift ever! Will I be the godmother of a baby girl? "
