Prompt #12 by darveymondler: "it's one day before christmas and donna has to visit one of her relatives cause they ended up in the hospital, harvey has a really important business he can't get himself out of so they sadly agree that they won't be spending the holiday together but make it up for new years… except harvey shows up with presents for her and her family."
It's the afternoon of 25th of December. Harvey it's sitting on the couch in their living room staring at the tree they both put up together. Their first tree. Their first Christmas together. And Donna it's in the other side of the country.
Halloween and Christmas are Donna's favorite holidays, and Harvey was just so excited to – finally - spending those dates with her. At least they manage to spend Halloween together (even though they didn't leave their home after Harvey saw her in costume).
Now, with Christmas, everything was going just as with the plan. They bought the presents and groceries to make dinner. The night of the 25th it was supposed to be just the two in their new home. They wanted to spend their first Christmas alone because this would be their first Christmas as a couple, but they would have lunch with Mike, Rachel, Robert, Laura and some people from their firm on the day.
But, on the morning of the 24th Clara called and said that Jim was in a car accident. It wasn't bad, but Clara was literally out of her mind and alone in NYC, since Donna's sister was away for the holidays with the family of her husband.
So Donna took a flight that they miraculously could get one ticket for her and went back to NYC. Harvey was supposed to go with her, but one - there were no more tickets and two - he had these two meetings that were already scheduled for ages with two big clients. And those clients, those companies, wanted to talk to him and only him. He tried everything in his power to postpone it, but it was unsuccessful.
Harvey took the goddamnit meeting, after Donna insisted him to do it, considering that their firm needed it since they're still small and needing more big clients. With the clients everything went just fine, Harvey kept it up together. But he was so mad to be away from Donna that he got in a hell of a mood that led to an argument with Mike and with whoever appeared in front of him.
By midafternoon Mike found himself obliged to kick Harvey out of the firm. So now he is home for just five minutes, sitting on the couch, staring the goddamnit tree, missing Donna, reloading the airline page every second looking for a plane ticket (even though they're all sold out), because there's no way he is spending Christmas alone, or worse, with Mike and Rachel all by himself.
When he was refreshing the airplane site, for the hundred-time, Donna's face appeared on his phone, she was finally calling and Harvey could feel his anger vanishing away. He didn't have the time to say hello, soon enough hearing her voice the moment he set it up with his phone on his ear.
"You need to stop snapping out on Mike." Donna said.
"What are you tal-." Harvey frowns.
"Rachel told me." She simply answered
"But-."
"Harvey." Donna said with that tone of voice that she uses when she needs to put his mind back to the right place and he can't help but smile.
"I treated him worse in the past." He answered by letting the weight of his body finally relax on the couch.
"Oh, that I know. But he, Rachel or anyone else has fault that we are not going to spend our first Christmas together."
"I know. I just- I miss you and I wanted to be there for you."
"I know you do. And I miss you and I want you here too. But there's nothing in our reach that we can do."
"I hate this. I don't want to spend my Christmas with Mike and Rachel."
"God, you sound like a kid" She laughs. "We can FaceTime for a few minutes at dinner, here in NYC time."
"It's not the same, Donna." Harvey said upset.
"I know… ok, think in this way: we're going to be together in two days and we are going to spend New Year's Eve with just the two of us. How's that sound?"
"It's what we have, I guess." Harvey says. "How's your dad?"
"So, that's why I was calling you, till I got a call from Rachel telling me that Mike kicked you out from the firm." She says trying to sound annoyed. "He is fine, they discharged him, so we are going home. I'm going to do some groceries to make dinner for us."
"That's good. So, no bad injuries, right?"
"No, he is going to be just fine."
"Good, I'm relieved. God… You're ok?" Harvey asks because he knows her, and he can hear in her voice that she is tired and nervous.
"Yes, just tired, I guess… And missing you." She finished with the voice that she only uses with him.
"I think I miss you more. I need you to be around me. If you're not, I get in a bad mood." He said boyishly, trying to cheer her up.
"We realized that" Donna laughs, and he can hear Clara calling her name. "Ok, I have to go, they just finished his discharge. When I get home I'll let you know ok?"
"Ok. I love you."
"Love you too. Bye." Donna hangs up and Harvey instantly gets that feeling again. Emptiness. He just needs her. Fuck it, he is going to NYC. He must find a way.
~oOo~
Harvey went to their bedroom and made a suitcase, not forgetting her present. Soon enough was in his car, on the way to the airport. He called Mike to apologize for his tantrum and let him know about his plans, that it was for Rachel and him to lie about him having dinner with them so he could surprise Donna.
When he got to the airport it was chaotic. It took almost an hour to be attended and God only knows how long before the attendant said that there was a ticket for the next flight.
Now he has nothing to do, other than to wait. He decided to go back to his car, since it would be quieter. He messages Donna a couple of times, and she FaceTime him while cooking. She was wearing a white wool blouse, blue coat, and jeans. She didn't blow-dry her hair, so she had the natural curves he loves so much.
"Why are you already smiling?" Donna said in the moment he picked up.
"You look beautiful." Harvey answered.
"Well… Thank you." She blushed and Harvey's chest warmed up, she still has this same reaction every time he praises her. "Where are you? Are you in the car?" Donna asked while frowning.
"I just arrived at Mike's" He lied and prayed that she didn't notice, quickly changing the subject. "Everything is fine? How is your dad doing at home?"
"He took some painkillers and went upstairs to sleep a little, till dinner it's ready. Mom, it's taking a shower, and I'm here making some pasta." She finishes showing him the pans on the stove that are preparing pasta and meatballs.
"Pasta and meatballs again?" Harvey laughs. "You eat that almost every day this week, I don't know how you can do it, woman. And top of it all, I never thought that this would fit in a Christmas dinner." Donna laughs with him.
"In my defense, there was almost nothing left in the markets here so I could make a decent dinner, alright?" Donna said while supporting her phone in the kitchen sink and took a sip of her mug.
"Tell me that you're NOT drinking wine from a mug" Harvey said, still smiling.
"Uhm-Uhm. Hot chocolate." Donna answered, sounding like a kid.
"What a good combination, pasta, meatballs and hot chocolate, you really outdone yourself this Christmas" Harvey says, shaking his head and Donna laughs again shrugging. "Wanted to be there" Harvey says, sounding serious.
"I know… I want you here too." She says softly and he can see that she has tears on her eyes. "You know what? I think it's time for you to get into Mike's house and for me to finish this dinner."
"No." Harvey simply answered and she laughed.
"Yes. And behave, ok?" Donna finishes jokily.
"I will try my best." Harvey smiles. "I love you".
"I love you" Donna answered and sent him a kiss, disconnecting the call.
When he hung up the call, Harvey realized it was almost time for his flight and it dawned on him that he hadn't bought anything for Clara and Jim. He can't come to their home at Christmas without any presents. Harvey - needs - to find a present for them, even though he is awful at that task. Actually, he would say that now he manages to buy good presents for Donna, but only for her.
He got back to the airport and went through the stores there. He knows that Donna bought for her mom some course she was crazy to do and for her dad a limited edition of some book that he was looking for since Donna was a teenager. But he needs to give them some presents as a son-in-law. So, he went for the basics. Harvey got a perfume for Clara, one that smells like what Donna uses it and a watch for Jim. It wasn't the best present ever, but it was the best he could do without Donna's help.
When he was about to check in, he sent a message to Mike to let him know just in case Donna goes after him and he couldn't answer. He sent a message for Donna telling her that he was as Mike's getting drunk to survive this night.
By some miracle the flight didn't get delayed, Donna texted him a few times, the last being to let him know that she was going to sleep and that she tried calling him but for some reason couldn't complete the call. Soon after, Mike texted him saying that Donna had called Rachel after him, and they said the - old man - was in the bathroom, as usual.

Harvey finally arrived at the airport in Hartford and rented a car to finish the last thirty minutes of the trip, which took longer than that, considering it was snowing. It was almost midnight when he arrived at Donna's parents' house, feeling relieved to be close to her again.
Harvey takes his phone and gets out of the car, calling her.
"Harvey?" Donna soon answered in a whisper.
"Hey… are you awake?"
"Now I am. What happened?" He can hear her sitting on the bed.
"Can you open the door for me?" Harvey asked.
"What door, Harvey?" She softly laughs. "Are you drunk? I'm in New York. How do you want me to open the door in Seattle?" Now Harvey laughs.
"Your parent's door, Donna. Can you open up? It's freezing out here." It was heavily snowing right now, and Harvey realized that he should bring more heavy clothes.
"What? You're here?" Donna says and he can hear her getting out of bed, opening the bedroom door, and going downstairs.
"Yep." Harvey answered, standing still by the door, waiting for her.
"Are you insane?" He hears Donna whispering in the moment the light of the living room is turned on.
"Kind off" Harvey says softly, a big grin appearing on his face the moment Donna opens the door.
"I can't believe it." Donna says, smiling to him and standing still by the door.
For a moment it looked exactly the night he appeared in her apartment, when everything started. She is wearing the same pajamas, but this time it's in the color black. Of course, now her hair it's a mess - he still doesn't understand how she manages to move so much in her sleep - and she has that face full of sleep that he loves, still trying to figure out what it's happening.
In a second Donna was in Harvey's arms. He doesn't know who approaches who first, but probably it was him that stuck her between his arms, while Donna was tucking her head in his neck in the way only she can do.
"You can't be away from me for one day, huh?" Donna says, taking her head off his neck and looking at him.
"I can't," Harvey says above a breath giving her a kiss on the lips. When they finally part Donna let out a soft laugh.
"Ok, it's really freezing, let's go inside." She finishes taking his hand and guiding him to the living room.
"I'm feeling like your secret boyfriend, sneaking into your parents' house so we can spend the night together." Harvey whispers.
"You're my husband, idiot!" Donna laughs leading their way to the kitchen.
"What are you doing?" Harvey frowns when he notices that she is opening some pans of leftover food.
"Our Christmas dinner." Donna stopped what she was doing looking at him like he just asked some stupid question.
"But it's almost midnight!" He said while she put some food in the microwave.
"So…?" Donna shrugs, handing him two plates and cutlery.
"What if we wake your parents? Your father needs to rest." Harvey was standing still with the plates and cutlery in his hands.
"My dad is just fine, and they won't even listen to us upstairs. Come on" she says pointing to the plates that were still in his hands.
"Ok, then…" Harvey answered by putting down the plates on the table at the same time she was getting him some scotch. "Who knew that our first Christmas dinner would be your reheated pasta?" He just can't help but say that with a smile on his face.
"Stop it!" Donna laughs while lighting it on some candles.
It was at that moment that Harvey realized this was going to be the most perfect Christmas ever. They never followed the simplest and most conventional path, something that reflects in their lives to this day. Of course, their first Christmas would have some setbacks and be unconventional, just like their marriage and their relationship. But this, this right here, this woman in front of him, with black pajamas, messy hair, make up free and sleepy eyes, with the food that she cooked – reheated - on the table, lighting up candles and giving him a glass of scotch, convinced to make their first Christmas happen at midnight… it's just perfect.
"What?" Donna asks when she realizes that he was staring at her.
"This is perfect" he says above a whisper, and she just smiled. Harvey gets close to her, holding her waist while she puts both of her arms around his neck. "I love you".
"I love you." Donna said in his lips, kissing him.
~oOo~
They had dinner, laughed, and talked about their memories of Christmas through the years, remembering the first Christmas party they had at the firm when everyone was thinking they were a couple and they went for it, making fun and joking around. Or the second one, where Louis almost ruined everything, Jessica wanted to fire him, and both had to put an end to it.
But it was in the moment they started talking about their childhood that Donna realized that Harvey was more than affected by his mother and dad not being around anymore, and for this being the first holiday that he wouldn't have both parents.
"My first memory, I was like, I don't know… five or six years old? And me and my sister got the same bikes, only of course hers was bigger and mine was smaller since I was much younger. But I was so excited because by that time I was fascinated by my sister and now I had something just like hers. It was in that Christmas that my dad taught me to ride a bike on the park next to our home, or tried to, because I ended up all scraped up after falling off about fifteen times and, by the end of the day, he and my mom was just kissing all my bruises trying to calm me down because I was just so scared and hurt that I wouldn't be able to ride a bike just like my sister." Donna says with a smile on her face. "Oh, it was that Christmas that my grandma got me a theater camp for kids, because she thought I was too astute for my age and had talent, according to her experience." Donna says laughing because Harvey already knows this story, and he knows that "by her experience" was because her grandma was fascinated by movies and watched everything in her reach.
"You know, my first memory from Christmas was when Marcus was a newborn. I really don't remember Christmas when I was an only child." Harvey softly laughs. "I remember it was very early in the morning, I had just woken up and smelled cookies. I ran downstairs and wanted to go see if would have any presents for me... But halfway there I stopped, and I looked into the kitchen and there was my mom cooking and laughing at something my dad had said, while he was leaning against the kitchen counter rocking Marcus. And… I just went there, I don't even want the presents anymore. My mom picked me up and put me in the kitchen corner next to my dad so I could help her make some more cookies and… It's crazy because I still remember the smell that was in our home, I still remember her perfume." Harvey finishes, eyes fixed in the glass of scotch in his hand.
"You miss them." Donna says, softly scratching the back of his neck.
"I do." Harvey answered, looking at her.
It was already almost 2 a.m., and they were still in the kitchen, Donna with a mug of hot chocolate, Harvey with a glass of Scotch, her feet in his lap while Harvey was caressing her left foot, and now her fingers scratching the back of his neck.
"Let's make some cookies." Donna says smiling to him.
"We don't need to," Harvey smiles back.
"Oh, we do! Because now I want a cookie." Donna says, taking her feet off from his lap and standing up. "Come on, make us some coffee while I start the dough."
They baked the cookies together, Donna pulling up other topics to lighten Harvey's memories and to make it easier for him. When they finished and put the cookies on the oven, they tried to fix up the kitchen a little. Now Harvey has his back on the kitchen counter, with Donna in his arms and between his legs.
"Thank you" Harvey says, giving her soft pecks in her lips.
"I still can't believe that you came all the way over here, so we could spend our first Christmas together. A little late, but even so-"
"So, are you saying that I should have taken a jet? You know I would, but I couldn't find any available." Harvey said seriously and Donna laughed.
"And you made Mike and Rachel lie to me! I need to have a serious conversation with those two when we get back."
"Oh come on! You said like they did a good job, just by saying I was in the bathroom" Harvey rolled his eyes and Donna laughed. "So… Can we exchange gifts?" Harvey says, giving her his famous grin. Donna tilts her head smiling, then suddenly frowns.
"I left your present in our home." Donna says annoyed.
"It's ok. Just being here with you it's more than enough." Harvey says smiling. "But I brought yours and I got something for your parents too". This time Donna rolled her eyes to him.
"Spoiling them, already?" She asked, messing with him. "Wait a second. You bought presents for them? All by yourself?"
"Yes. You would be surprised how good I'm becoming at this"
"I still have my doubts. I think I need to see my present first before coming to any conclusion." Donna said seriously, giving him space so he can get her present while Harvey just rolled his eyes.
"Ohh, I see a blue package" Donna can't help but say in an excited voice, bouncing in the spot, the moment she saw Tiffany bag.
"Merry Christmas" Harvey says, giving her a kiss and handing her the Tiffany bag, keeping a hold for the other package.
"So you were able to take my hints?" Donna laughs when she opens the blue box, where inside was the bracelet and earrings that she and Rachel were talking about two weeks before.
"It was getting a little hard to stay unnoticed when you, and Rachel, commented more than three times in one week about the bracelet."
"Thank you. I love it."
"There's more." Harvey said, handing a small and thin package to her. Inside was a book of the first William Shakespeare play that she did, back then when she was just a kid. Harvey was able to find one of the first editions.
"How could you find this?" She asked in disbelief.
"I needed some help from Rachel. But, either way, I found it."
"This is – amazing." Donna said while opening the book and flipping through it. She looked back at him "Thank you" and gave him a peck on his lips.
"See? You underestimate me. I can give good gifts…" Harvey says and Donna just shakes her head in disbelief.
Soon the cookies were ready, they ate some and went straight to bed. Harvey tried to take advantage of sleep drunk Donna making her spill what his gift was, or to get her to give hints, but with no luck.
"Uhm-Uhm, not going to tell you" She takes a deep breath, snuggling even more to him.
"Oh, come on" Harvey said, finding the right spot in her head that she enjoys when he is caressing her hair.
"You can't bribe me just by caressing this spot." Donna said, softly laughing in his chest. "I could tell you right now what it is, but I really prefer to see your face when you open it."
"Ok. I gave up. But I'll try again tomorrow anyway." Harvey said, giving a kiss on her forehead.
By the morning, Jim and Clara were surprised to find Harvey in their home, and with presents. They enjoyed the day in a quiet and calm way, Harvey finally bounding with Jim and winning even more Clara's heart. In the end, they tried to do Christmas again on the 26th.
~oOo~
The moment they set foot in their home Donna bolted.
"I'll get your present" She soon says, dropping her suitcase but taking the handbag with her.
"I bet you're dying for me to know what it is." Harvey says, noticing that she is anxious. He puts their suitcase in the corner of the hall and goes to the kitchen to make some coffee for them.
"Ok" she says after two minutes away and sitting down on the couch, holding a brown bag. It doesn't seem to be anything heavy or large. Harvey frowns, standing still in the kitchen. "You need to sit down", Donna says.
"I'm a little scared right now," Harvey says, going towards her and sitting down next to her.
"Merry Christmas" she says, handing him the present and giggles nervously.
The moment he opened the bag he couldn't believe it. It was the Miles Davis that she scratched years ago, when he gave her a hard time for it, because the vinyl was a limited edition and very hard to find. So much that since then he has been looking for the vinyl to be able to listen to it again, but he had no luck finding it. That's why he got mad at her - or tried to. But Donna found it.
"How?" Harvey asked, amazed.
"I'm Donna." She shrugged. "There's something inside too."
Harvey frowns, pulling out the album dedication from inside the vinyl cover, noticing that it has a folded sheet of paper attached to it. He unfolds it, finding out it's a blood test, with her name circled and at the end of the page the result marked with a yellow highlighter. Underneath she wrote something.
For you to play for our daughter
(or son, but I'm pretty sure that it's going to be a girl)
"Donna." Harvey whispers, still staring at the paper, rereading the sentence a hundred times just to be sure of what he is reading. "Donna." This time he says looking back at her. "You are?" Harvey asked in disbelief, he knows he is about to cry any minute now.
"I am," Donna says, nodding and smiling at him. "I found out the day I went to New York, I wanted so bad to tell you but I wanted to have sure first and then I have to go there to be with my mom and–" Harvey holds her head with his two hands and kiss her to make her stop talking, because he know she is nervous. The kiss didn't last because both couldn't help but smile.
"You are pregnant" Harvey says amazed, tears forming in his eyes just like hers.
"I'm pregnant," Donna whispers.
"I just -. I can't believe it." Harvey says shaking his head "I love you", he finishes kissing her again.
"We are having a baby" Donna says in his lips while he is still kissing her, both about to cry.
"You're going to have trouble getting over this gift for the many Christmas to come." Harvey says, giving her a smile that she has never ever seen before.
"I have to agree with you." Donna says smiling to him. "And I promise that I will stay away from this vinyl."
"Oh, you better, because if you scratch this one you will have problems with me and our baby."
"I love you" Donna says to him, giving him another kiss. This will forever be their best Christmas ever.
