Chapter 11 Phoenixes

Sirius was never as terrified in his life as he was at this moment. The night he lost his mate almost destroyed him but his son being alive kept him going. If his son was gone he wasn't sure he could go on. As much as he cared for his family and loved Moony as a brother he couldn't lose his baby. From the moment he had his son his world was about him. He felt like he had let James down allowing their son to be kidnapped. He was all Harry had left and he had let their son down.

Remus and the others were worried about Harry but also about him as well. He was one to get angry and lose his temper. Even as a child he was never one to brood. The only time anyone saw him like this was when his brother died. He had been helpless.

He clung to the wolf in his hands. "He doesn't even have a toy for comfort."

Remus tried to remind him. "He has Zar."

Pollux growled. "Thought we gave him a cat."

Walburga looked at her father. "He has two now."

Arcturus cut in though."What do you mean he has Zar?"

Sirius turned to him."You don't like the cat anymore then the rest of us. Harry must have been scared."

The old man growled. "You are sure he has my cat?"

Walburga was confused. "What is it?"

Remus explained. "He was with Harry. Now they are both missing from the room."

Arcturus didn't respond further but called Kreacher. "Zar is gone?"

Kreacher nodded. "Not here master."

"Go to the manor and bring me the other half."

Kreacher vanished and the others were left standing in confusion. They had no idea why he was so concerned about the cat. He kept it because it had been a gift months before his wife died. Blacks had arranged marriages though the laws had changed. Lucius and Narcissa and Bellatrix and Rodolphus fell prey before laws changed. But Lucius and his wife loved each other before. Andromeda was meant to marry Rodolphus but ran off with Ted, like Lucretia. Lucretia hadn't lost her place as she married a wizard from an old family. Bella and Rodolphus were death eaters together but no love. But all other Blacks had found love eventually with their spouses. Orion and Walburga had. And both sets of their parents had. Both men to this day mourned their wives. They could see his concern over the cat was more then his wife's memory at this moment. And what he sent Kreacher for,had them confused.

Arcturus waited and was suddenly grateful his cat bonded to the boy. And was happy Harry took the cat and not a toy with him. He simply hoped who ever took Harry didn't notice the cat's collar and block him.

Kreacher returned with a small crystal half sphere. "Master."

Walburga finally asked. "What? That looks like your cat's collar."

Arcturus clarified. "The other half of his tag."

Sirius didn't get the point. "How will that help?"

Arcturus smiled. "It is how Zar goes between homes."

"An elf or you." Sirius thought.

Arcturus looked at Walburga. "The day you found me in the playroom and Harry was crying. Though you hid your concern."

Walburga had wanted to comfort him but Arcturus hadn't known yet."He sobbed about Zar. He ended up at Malfoy manor."

Lucius lifted an eyebrow. "He has visited before? Should I count my cats?"

Arcturus ignored him. "He was upset as I sent Zar home with this."

Sirius caught on. "Portkey?"

Moody finished. "Its a homing one. It seeks out the other half."

"It sent Zar home by activating his half." Remus realized.

"And if who ever took him has not blocked it, we can use it to go to him."

They hoped it was not a stooge of Albus and he was not in the school. The wards would not allow them to enter the school even with this. It would take them to the gates but trying to get him out of the school would be near impossible. But they would have to try. But they still had no idea how a stooge would get through and if Albus would risk having him at the school.

Arcturus went to activate it. "Only one way to find out."

Sirius went to grab it. "If anyone is going for my son it is me."

Moody cleared his throat. "A few of us will go."

Remus reminded him. "That thing can't take too many."

Walburga added. "And if Albus is involved we have to watch who is involved."

Moody managed to make it a bit bigger. "It can take five and still bring him back."

Sirius looked at his mentor. "Will you come?"

Moody didn't need asking. "We can fit two more."

Sirius knew he included Remus in his count. He looked at his grandsire. "One more."

Walburga came to their side. "I am not staying behind."

Severus could not reveal himself to Albus if this was him. And it was agreed Lucius was best kept private for now as well. Walburga was not usually one to go and they didn't need five. But this was her grandson and she was done sitting on the sidelines. She saw what leaving it to the men got her before. No one was arguing and they activated the portkey when they were all ready. Wands out they told themselves they were ready for anything and half expected the school gates. They were shocked to find themselves in the woods. They knew it was the Forbidden forest and were confused. You could apparate to the heart if you knew the spot but it was dangerous. They thought surely something was wrong and Albus found the portkey. He set them up and sent them into danger. But then they stopped.

"Papa'. A voice made them turn. Sitting on a blanket was Harry with Zar and not one but two phoenixes. "Look pretty birds."

Sirius ran to his son. "Harry I was so worried.'

A voice came from the trees."I hope we did not worry you."

Harry woke up in the morning. He smile as he see both Foey and Zar. He know they be friends. He hope Grandpa P smile Harry name kitty for him. Grandpa give him kitty so he name for Foey story. He still not hear rest yet. He hear about Cygy instead. He wish Cygy still here as he like kitties and Grandpa say same magic as Harry. Grandpa promise to show him though.

Harry call for Papa as he promise not get out of bed. Daddy and Mama Li tell him not to either. But Papa not come. He think Papa having breaky. He try and call Kreak instead but he no come either. He about to pop, only to kitchen, when there pop.

Elf in room. "Master."

Harry pull back. "No Kreak."

"I come bring you."

Harry pulled back. "You no Kreak or Popo."

The elf came closer and Foey hid but Zar began hissing. "Nice cat."

Harry scare as he can't pop. Papa say only Popo and Kreak. "Go."

"You come eat Master."

Harry watched as Zar swiped at the elf. "No."

The elf looked ready to hex the cat."Bad cat."

Harry whimpered and not being able to pop he look at elf. "Go."

The elf vanished and Harry worry. He know he do it but not sure think elf come back. He need to get Papa or Granny. Papa tell only 2 elf he trust. Popo Daddy's elf. He come from Uncy Daddy say. And granny elf. Papa always say granny elf protect Harry. Kreak come visit before. He know other Potty and Blackie elves but Papa say only Popo or Kreak. Only they always safe and take care Harry. He no like this.

Harry not pop he try. He climb out of bed and he try open door but no open. He try magic to open or pop but no. He scare when he hear two pops and think elf back. But he see birdies. Two pretty birdies. One red and one green. He like.

He smile. "Pretty. I touch?"

The red lower head so Harry stroke. He trill.

Pop again and elf back."Master be coming."

Harry stayed near the birds. "No. You go."

The elf move to him. "Master say you come."

Harry sobbed. "No."

Zar slashed the elf before jumping into Harry's arms. "Meow."

Harry hugged his kitty.. "Zar."

The elf reached for him again. "Come."

Suddenly green birdy bight his shirt."Nice birdy."

The elf though was mad. "No."

Harry saw red bight his shirt too. "What?"

Suddenly Harry pop but not like him. It feel warm and twinkle stars for a moment. He scare where they take him. He more scare when in wood. He know bad. Uncle Mooey go in on big moon. Uncle Mooey cat and wolf. Wolf get growly at moon, go to woods. Harry know wood bad. Growly wolf and more. He see Mooey wolf but not when growly at moon. Mooey say no safe. He happy Zar come but he scare. He promise Papa no pop.

He look at bird. "Home. No safe. Home."

He heard hoofs and a voice."It's okay child you are safe."

Harry see horsie man and another man. He stare in awe. Non horsie man speak but he look at other. "Horsie?"

He smile. "I am a centaur little one. I am Magorian."

Harry smile. "I go home. Papa."

The other man seemed to speak to the green birdie and then turned back. "It's not safe.A bad elf came."

Harry know. "No go with. Papa say only Kreak or Popo. He try."

The man knelt. "You will be safer here. You can spend time with Gaius. He likes you. He likes few."

"Papa worry. No pop."

"Papa will come for you soon. And we can have a lesson while we wait."

"Grandpa P teach. He say elfie."

The man smiled. "You indeed take after my daughter. Your great-great grandmother."

Harry eye. "Fam?"

"Your Grandpa Pollux was married to my granddaughter. I assume that makes me Grandfather Galrod."

Harry smile. "Grandpa Gal. Gai?" But he pointed at other. "Who?"

Galrod explained. "That is Fawkes. He lives at the school."

Harry eyed birds. "Take from bad elf."

"I had Gaius watching. Fawkes seems drawn."

Galrod shared a look with the centaur lord. He lived in France normally but at times he came to check on his granddaughter's family. She stopped visiting when married as dangerous but Galrod kept watch. Her mother had been his favorite child. When ever a child showed her powers he knew. Other then the girl with shifting skills he saw none like this boy. He was intrigued to learn more. He and Magorian slid back into the trees when they sensed others coming. They watched as five arrived. Galrod recognized two.

He spoke as the boy he knew was his kin scooped up the boy."I hope we did not worry you."

Sirius held his son as he looked in shock at the two figures. One was a centaur and he seemed older then the rare scouts they met near the edge. The other he realized with shock was an elf. He could sense it even before he saw the pointed ears. High elves looked like humans but for the ears and a timeless quality. Though they could be killed they didn't age past maturity and they could live hundreds of years as there was little natural that killed them. It was one thing humans feared about them.

He shared a look with his mother and grandsire. He had been hoping to find an elf and link to the family but not like this. They had no idea who the elf was or how they took Harry. He had thought them not a threat.

He was furious. "Not worry? You kidnapped my son."

Arcturus added. "If not for my cat we'd have not found him."

The elf smiled. "I saw the tracer. If not we would have sent for you."

"Why take my son?" Sirius snarled.

Harry spoke up. "No take. Birdie."

Walburga eyed the phoenixes."Phoenixes."

The elf explained. "A house elf entered your house and tried to take the boy."

Harry confirmed. "No Kreak or Popo. I no go Papa. Papa tell."

Sirius kissed his head."Good boy." He turned to the elf. "How did you know?"

The elf smiled. "I watch over my family. My phoenix rescued him with this school one."

Remus looked at Fawkes. "He serves the man who tried to take him. Why would he help?"

Magorian spoke. "He belongs to the school not the headmaster. He protects the kids. He was drawn to an heir."

Sirius was shocked. "How?"

Magorian laughed. "The stars. I believe he walks in the house of fire."

Walburga was intent on the elf. "Family?"

"I believe you are my great-granddaughter."

Walburga was shocked. "You're her father?"

He motioned. "Perhaps we should get the boy home and speak there."

The others agreed knowing the family back home would worry. Besides Harry needed breakfast and to calm. He was safe but it was better at the house. Walburga thought her dad should be in on this as he had so many questions about his wife and her clan. He deserved as much as anyone to know what was happening and have answers. They saw the shock of the others, well relief over Harry but shock at the newcomer. The elf went to work doing some spells on the house.

Sirius called Kreacher to bring his son breakfast while they filled the others in. As they spoke they watched the elf and realized he was putting up further wards on the house. After what happened they knew it was needed.

He turned to Harry and reminded him. "You are safe here but you need help you call Gaius. He will come."

Pollux cleared his throat. "Who are you?"

The elf turned. "I believe you are my granddaughter's husband."

"Irma?" Pollux was shocked.

"You know us to be immortal when pure blood."

He smirked. "Not so much with your daughter."

Galrod sighed."Unfortunately bonding with a human can cause illness which is why we avoid it."

"Then how was Irma born? I never understood."

Galrod sighed. "When the rest of us moved to France Elysian decided to remain. She was training with a wizard alchemist."

"Alchemist? Flamel?" Remus guessed.

Galrod smiled. "You guessed where Gaius came from? Yes. She met Pontius Crabbe and fell in love."

Pontius defied his family and married the elf but because of her magic he remained heir. They were deeply in love and he mourned deeply when she died. His second wife was the witch he was intended to marry. Pontius kept Irma safe by hiding even from her stepmother what she was. He only told Pollux when Cygnus showed. Galrod longed to speak to them but he had made a promise to keep his distance to keep them safe. He had known though he needed to act now. He assured them that while Nicholas knew he would never betray them to Albus. He hadn't trusted Albus in decades and was no risk in this. Irma was his goddaughter.

Sirius was amazed."I had hoped to track down some family so to train my son."

Galrod surprised him. "For now it is too much of a risk."

Walburga didn't back off. "He needs training"

"I believe your father already offered."

Pollux didn't deny it. "I have no elf blood. Surely you would be better."

"He doesn't need full training for a few years. I have seen you and know you have enough."

Sirius wasn't pleased."You worry about yourself. So much for claiming to be about family."

"I worry for the boy. My magic will draw notice eventually. If it was only my own safety I'd risk it."

Pollux believed him. "I will train him."

Sirius glared at Arcturus."You got your way."

Harry broke it up. "Go?"

The elf knelt. "I will visit but your grandfather there will teach you."

Harry smiled. "Like Grandpa P."

Sirius groaned. "You would."

Remus elbowed him. "Play nice."

The elf went to leave. "Train the girl too."

Pollux knew who he meant. "She is a half blood and can only change her hair."

"She is elven. You want my aid you will train both."

Walburga shot her dad a look. "Father."

"Fine." Pollux growled. "Though it may take help convincing her mother to let me."

Lucius who was about to leave with Severus assured him. "I will help."

Fleamont was relieved his grandson was back but needed to return to bed. Severus went to take him back and Lucius went to leave too. Galrod went to follow but not before leaving Harry with a pendant around his neck. He told the boy that he could use it to summon the elf, or at school the centaurs, if he needed help. When the others were gone the Blacks watched as Harry sat happily eating. It amazed them he showed little sign of the adventure. He was a bit spooked and stayed close to Papa though. Sirius was happy his son was too young to understand most of what happened.

Harry looked at Zar. "Treat Zar. Zar bray. Zar prot me. He bray."

AN: Sorry Sirius stuck with Pollux teaching. The three old men are remaining. But another grandfather (technically his three times great grandfather) has entered. More elves and phoenixes to come.

Galrod: high elf very old by human standards as he is 2 generations older then Pollux and Arcturus. But immortal elf so who knows how old.

Elysian: his favored daughter. When her family fled to France for safety she remained. Apprentice to Flamel. Died giving birth.

Pontius Crabbe: Elysian's wizard husband. Poor man he can blame his horrid name on me naming him late at night.

irma Crabbe: daughter of Elysian and Pontius, though raised by stepmother. Pollux's late wife, source of Harry's elven blood.

unnamed witch: Lady Crabbe, Irma's stepmother. Mother of the next lord Crabbe. Ancestress of Vincent Crabbe, not Elysian.
