Crows circled in the morning sky as fire and smoke rose from a ruined mansion. Screams echoed through the air as the sound of battle raged on.
Corpses of humans and elves layed scattered across the ground. Their blood soaking the ground.
Two male elves then walked out of the front doors of the main building. One was covered in blood and the other looked untouched, pristine.
The clean elf had long blond hair reaching down past his lower back with one red eye and one green. His face was a picture of beauty, calm and serene.
He wore tight-fitting white and gold battle mage robes with gold-plated gauntlets and greaves. A white cape draped over his shoulders.
The other elf had short white hair with one red eye and one black eye. His features though splattered with blood held an unnerving beauty of their own.
He was wearing black pants with a black and gold hooded overcoat covering a matching chest plate, handless gauntlets, and greaves.
The bloody one then spoke.
"Well, that was boring... I was expecting them to put up a little more of a fight..."
The clean one then replied.
"Regardless, we got what we came for..."
The golden-haired elf said slightly annoyed as he pulled out a white and gold cloth and held it out.
The white-haired elf then reached out for the piece of cloth before the golden elf quickly pulled it away.
"What do you think you're doing? Your gonna get blood all over it and it will be useless..."
The blood-covered elf then scratched the back of his head.
"Oh, hehe, my mistake..."
The blonde elf groaned before holding the cloth out again.
The other elf then leaned forward and smelled the cloth. The elf breathed deeply as he took in the scent.
"She smells just as good as I remember... I wonder how she tastes now?..."
He said as he licked some blood from his fingers.
The blonde elf then spoke matter-of-factly.
"You know our orders. We collect her and bring her straight home... Unharmed."
The blood-covered elf then replied.
"I know... I was just wondering..."
The blonde elf then sighed before speaking.
"Come on, now that you have her scent let's find a river to throw you in..."
"Hey!"
The bloody elf said before the duo vanished into thin air...
Mountain Fortress Barad Eithel:
Deep within the mountain fortress, Ariel sang in elven and hummed as she moved about a room covered in plants.
"A neth adan plural edain wel trí i glad
wi hon iver a faras peng,"
(A young man walked through the forest
With his quiver and hunting bow)
Plants of many different types and colors filled the room as the mage plucked leaves and buds from a few and mixed them into a potion.
The room's purpose looked to be medical. Beds, meant for patients neatly lined up next to each other.
As Ariel finished mixing the potion she then walked up to the only occupied bed in the room.
A young man sat at the edge of the bed watching her work.
He had short light blue hair, brown eyes, and light skin. He was wearing a white cloth shirt and dark hide pants.
"Here Anders,"
Ariel said as she held out the potion in front of the young archer.
Anders shook himself from his trance and quickly looked away as he took the concoction from the elven maiden's hands before holding a breath and downing it.
Anders then took a few breaths before speaking.
"Gods, that's gross."
Ariel then raised an eyebrow as she chuckled.
"Haha, Your getting better at that.."
Anders then replied, refusing to make eye contact.
"Ah, um.. yes..."
He then handed over the empty cup.
Ariel smiled kindly as she took the cup and placed it on a desk. Speaking as she did.
"Good, Now, how are your symptoms: Fevers, shakes?"
Anders then replied as he stood up from the bed.
"You can stop pretending you care. I know you just following orders."
Ariel raised an eyebrow as she replied.
"Of course Im following orders dear, Lord Evunial is interested in the progress of your condition."
She then took a step forward and smiled kindly as she continued.
"But as a healer, I care for all my patients, now answer..."
Anders then sighed as he reluctantly answered.
"Haven't had a fever in weeks. And the shakes are almost gone completely."
Ariel then replied her smile persisting.
"That's good to hear."
Ariel's tone then darkened slightly as she continued.
"And the nightmares?.."
Anders then looked at his right hand as the image of giant wooden claws covered in blood flashed across his mind.
"They... Uh...Come and go..."
Ariel turned her head slightly as she looked over the young man's saddened features, deciding not to press the question.
She then placed a hand on Anders' chest surprising him slightly.
A green light then shined around her hand as a light shined back from within Anders' chest before dimming.
Ariel then spoke as she walked to her desk.
"Good, Your body is stabilizing. It looks like your brother's blood is settling well."
She then picked up a small wooden container and walked back to Anders.
"This should be enough doses for a month. Take one in the morning and one before bed..."
Anders hesitantly took the small container.
"Th..thank you, Lady Ariel."
Lady Ariel then waved her hand dismissively.
"No thanks required. Now if you need anything, let me know."
Anders then nodded before leaving the room.
Outside the room, another man stood waiting
He had short dark blue hair, green eyes, and light skin and was wearing white and blue heavy armor with a great sword on his back.
His features lit up as he saw Anders.
"There you are, little brother! So what she say?"
Anders then sighed before replying.
"She says my body is stable... Your blood worked, Katan."
Katan then sighed in relief.
"Well that's great news, isn't it? You're ok.."
Anders then replied as he shook his head.
"But I'm not ok, am I? I died... And came back a monster... I'm still a monster..."
Katan then quickly grabbed Anders by the shoulders.
"You are not a monster! You are my brother! Don't ever call yourself that! Do you hear me?"
Anders nodded his head before looking away toward a window in the hall and speaking.
"Let's leave this place, Katan... forget Varland, Forget Evunial, We could go to a different kingdom. Build a new life..."
Katan looked down and replied.
"You know I can't do that..."
Anders then looked at Katan.
"Because you swore your loyalty in exchange for getting me back?..."
Katan then replied.
"It's only a year's service, and I'd do it a thousand times over..."
Anders then looked away and began.
"But.."
Katan then cut him off.
"Listen Anders. You know as well as I do that a year is nothing... Evunial is a kinder Lord than either of us has served. We could make a life here..."
Anders then looked at the window once again.
"A beautiful cage is still a cage..."
Katan opened his mouth to reply but was stopped by the arrival of an Elven soldier.
"Ah, there you are Katan... Lord Evunial has requested your presence in the war room..."
Katan then nodded to the soldier before looking back to Anders.
"Look, try to get some rest. I know you haven't been sleeping well. I will see you later."
Anders nodded before Katan turned and followed the elf down the hall.
IN THE WAR ROOM
Evunial looked out the window into the center of the courtyard where a small tree with golden leaves grew as Abraxas, Pirotess, and Eltharion stood leaning over a long rectangular table looking at a map of the mountains and nearby kingdoms.
Eltharion spoke. As he pointed at roads to the east of the mountains.
"We have successfully set up guard posts on all roads leading from Baharuth into our territory. All slave caravans coming this way have had their cargo freed with the drivers and soldiers stripped naked and forced to turn back on foot as you have requested."
Abraxas then spoke up slightly vexed.
"A mercy they would not afford us..."
Pirotess then replied.
"True... But we must remember that for most of these people this is simply the only way of life they have known. Killing soldiers will do nothing but build more animosity. When we make our move against Baharuth it must be against their leaders..."
Evunial then spoke.
"Pirotess is right. We must be exact with our wrath."
Abraxas then bowed his head.
"Of course Lord Commander Forgive my outburst."
"There is nothing to forgive Abraxas. How are your forces?"
Abraxas then replied.
"We have finished construction of the north and south watch towers and reinforced the villages around them."
Evunial then turned from the window and walked to the table and looked down at the map.
"And how are the people taking to the new architecture of their villages?"
Abraxas then replied.
"Well with Alderman Marc singing your praises, I'd say quite well. Their only request was that we didn't turn their homes into trees... Though needless to say, Once they saw our "Create Fortress" spell their worries were put to rest."
Evunial chuckled as Pirotess spoke up.
"Seems they have us confused with our woodland cousins... Speaking of..."
Pirotess then looked at Evunial.
"My lord, Have you given any thought to how we should deal with King Hougan? If even half of what the elves say is true... He cannot be allowed to hold the title of king. Nor is he worthy to."
Pirotess then took a breath.
"And with Araina here it's only a matter of time before he learns of her and comes for her. And that's only if he isn't already the one pulling Varland's strings..."
Evunial then thought to himself.
"(She is right... He is most likely the one behind Varland's sudden desperation... I will have to deal with him at some point. But I haven't given much thought to how to go about it. I suppose an invasion here wouldn't be much different from a guild base raid back in Yggdrasil, and I've led plenty of those...but...)"
Eltherion then spoke up.
"I share your frustration but a conflict like that would inevitably lead to bloodshed, and the law is clear on such matters Pirotess.. Or need I remind you of the five taboos..."
Pirotess leaned on the table as her eyes fell on Eltherion.
"I have no need for your..."
Eltherion then cut her off as he raised his hand, holding up five fingers.
"One Theft is forbidden
Two, kin slaying is forbidden
Three, treasonous acts are forbidden"
Pirotess rolled her eyes as Eltherion continued.
"Four, Warriors shall obey the Laws of Honor in warfare during wartime.
And five, One does not harm or threaten a guest or bard..."
Pirotess sighed in defeat before speaking.
"I would never suggest we spill elven blood. I know the law... But what would you have us do if he came looking for her? Hand her over?..."
Eltherion then replied.
"Never... Araina is our kin now. If they came for her, my blade would be the first they met but we cannot start the conflict... It is not our way..."
Pirotess then began to reply.
"But I..."
Evunial then placed a hand on Pirotess's shoulder as he looked at her with a kind smile.
"No need to explain... I understand."
"(We made it a point to not PK elven players or go after other elven guilds back in Yggdrasil but that shouldn't stop us from dealing with this trash...)"
He then looked at Eltherion.
"If I did go into open conflict and battle for the freedom of the Elf Kingdom. And deal with their king without killing. Would you follow me Eltherion?"
Eltherion then stood up straight and answered.
"Of course! I would follow you into the abyss and beyond my Prince..."
Evunial then sighed in relief.
"Good, and what of Calagon's scouting mission? Has he reported anything?"
Eltherion then replied.
"Calagon is currently flying high above the Re-Estize Kingdom. No sign of the High King yet but. He senses a concentration of powerful magical energy coming from a forest near a small village on the kingdom's eastern border. Do you want him to investigate?"
Evunial thought for a moment.
"(Hmmm, He is my strongest npc so there shouldn't be anyone who can challenge him. And I gave him my Sword Of Khaine just in case but... Better safe than sorry.)"
"No. Have him continue recon from a safe distance. I will investigate with him once I am done with today's mission"
Eltherion then nodded in understanding before Evunial looked down at a circled spot on the map to the southeast of the mountains.
"Now, that just leaves..."
Just then Katan was led into the room.
"Lord Evunial? You needed me?"
Katan said as he bowed.
Evunial then replied.
"Ah Katan, just in time. But before we begin. Tell me. How is your brother doing with the treatments?"
Katan was slightly taken aback by the question but composed himself.
"He is well my lord. The treatments seem to be working."
Evunial then smiled as he replied.
"That is excellent news. I am happy to hear it. Now to the business at hand. As you know we will be going to Varland's estate today. I wanted to ask if you would join us. I wish to broker a surrender. I think you could help with that."
Katan then raised an eyebrow as he replied.
"Surrender? Varland is far too prideful for that I think."
Evunial then chuckled.
"Haha, oh no, not for Varland, his fate is sealed. I mean for Arner. He is an honorable soldier and I'd rather not kill him and his men if I don't have to...
I hope that you can talk him into laying down his arms... He does not need to join me, just not fight against me...and he will be spared."
Katan placed a hand on his chin as he looked to think for a moment before speaking.
"Hmmm, I can make no guarantees but I can try."
Evunial then smiled as he raised his hands to his side as he spoke.
"And that's all I ask... "
Evunial then addressed Abraxas.
"Now, Abraxas get your men ready and waiting by the main gate I will be there soon. Katan, go with him..."
Abraxas and Katan then bowed before leaving the room.
Elsewhere in the western fields just outside the fortress
Naris sat in the snow with his legs crossed watching Izunia who sat across from him in the same position holding one of her daggers out in front of her.
Izunia furrowed her brow as she strained to grip her blade. As her grip tightened, her dagger began to glow a faint blue. She clenched her teeth as her arm began to shake before she fell forward exhausted with heavy breaths.
"I, I. Was so close... ."
Naris sighed before speaking.
"Now Child, You and I both know "close" is a strong word... Though I am still surprised you can manifest any ki at all. It's a good sign."
Izunia took a moment to catch her breath before replying.
"But this shouldn't be difficult. I've strengthened my blades before with martial arts.."
Naris then spoke.
"And that is the point of this exercise. Something familiar enough to what you are used to. I am aware that you are versed in what the people of this land call Martial Arts. Lord Evunial says you are quite talented."
A slight smile crept onto Izunia's face at the elven lord's words but quickly faded as he continued.
"But I am not impressed... Martial arts only gives access to a fraction of the vast inner energy within all things. It is a sad imitation of what I know as skills which are abilities born from a warrior's understanding of this inner energy also known as Ki."
Izunia then spoke.
"So if I master my ki, I can learn skills?"
Shadow Blade then spoke sharply
"Don't say stupid things..."
The words struck Izunia like an arrow in the heart.
Naris noticed this and calmed his tone before resuming
"As you are now, skills are far beyond you... However, If you are capable of gaining an understanding of ki, perhaps your martial arts may become a passable imitation of skills..."
From what I've read about Martial arts. The execution is different. It forces ki to manifest for a predetermined purpose. Though useful it lacks flexibility."
Naris Then pulled a dagger out from his coat and held it in front of him before continuing.
" What I am teaching you does not require force but understanding, Ki is like the water you need only to let it flow..."
A dark purple light then burst forth from his blade, glowing and pulsing as he continued to speak.
"The purest form of this energy is mana. Mages and other magic casters harness this energy to cast their spells but that is not its only form."
Izunia watched the blade intently as Naris continued.
"With discipline and focus, even those who lack the talent of magic casting can harness and convert mana into a lesser form called ki."
Naris changed the size of the glow around his blade for effect as he continued.
"Whenever you use a martial art you are forcing this conversion. All I am doing is directing the flow into my blade naturally with intent., it will take time...but If you can master your ki like Lord Evunial believes you can, then maybe you will be able to learn abilities that will make martial arts look like child's play. From now on, before you use a martial art you must first channel your ki into whatever weapon you're using."
Izunia looked at Naris's blade in awe before looking down at her dagger. The faces of her lost friends flashed across her mind.
"I will become stronger... For them..."
Her grip on her blade tightened till her knuckles lost their color.
Naris noticed this and spoke.
"That anger you have. It has its uses... But power rarely comes from a desire. You must create a need, a purpose that washes away all doubt. Only then will you be able to call that power your own.."
Izunia stayed silent as she looked down at her blade.
Naris then took a breath before standing.
"Rest... That is enough for today..."
Naris then walked away disappearing into shadow.
Izunia sighed as she laid back on the cold ground exhausted.
"A purpose? I had one... And I failed... What use is another?..."
Just then an ice pillar shot up into the sky from down the hill Izunia was laying on.
"What the hell was that?"
Izunia said as she shot up and looked down the hill. The small lake at the bottom was now frozen over.
Izunia then went down to investigate.
As she got closer sighed in relief as she saw two familiar figures.
At the edge of the frozen lake stood Master Carnen as Araina jumped for joy.
"I did it! I did It! I finally cast it!
Araina exclaimed. A bright smile on her face.
Master Carnen then spoke in a calm tone.
"Yes, yes, well done."
Izunia then called out as she approached.
"Araina, Master Carnen,"
Araina then turned and ran up to Izunia, excitement all over her face.
"Izunia! Look, look what I summoned!"
Izunia then looked at Araina confused as she replied.
"Summoned?"
Araina then pointed at the edge of the shore where a small creature covered in white fur stood on two feet.
Izunia looked at the creature and then back at Araina.
"What is it?"
Carnen then spoke matter-of-factly.
"The summon is called Ymir, a beast ice elemental. A particularly strong one because it grows as the caster does. Its current form may be underwhelming but the potential is impressive."
Araina then quickly rebutted.
"Hey! Nothing is underwhelming about him!"
Araina then ran up and picked the summon up and ran back to Izunia.
"See, isn't he adorable!"
Izunia then laughed nervously as she looked at the small ice beast. Its face was flat and elongated, like a seal but almost featureless except for heavy brows and glowing blue eyes. Its small arms ended in clawed hands almost too big for its body."
"Well, I uh..."
"SNAP!"
Before Izunia could answer Carnen snapped his fingers as a magic circle appeared in the middle of the lake before steam erupted into the air before dispersing revealing the lake thawed once again.
"That's enough for today... Release the summon. Don't want you using too much mana."
Carnen said as he waved steam from his face.
Araina then replied.
"But you said Ymir was very mana efficient."
The master mage then looked at Araina slightly amused before replying.
"I did... But seeing how you froze the entire lake when I instructed you to simply freeze a piece shows you still have a lot to learn about mana management... Now release the spell."
Araina then sighed in defeat. Before Ymir vanished from her hands.
Carnen then spoke.
"Good, now i must leave you two. Lady Ariel has asked for my presence and it will not do to keep her waiting. Dar'eth Shiral."
Araina and Izunia then replied in unison.
"Tas na"
Carnen then raised an eyebrow at the young elves.
Izunia and Araina looked at each other before relizing and speaking up. Again in unison.
"Tas dar'eth"
Carnen then smiled.
"Better..."
Carnen then walked toward the fortress leaving the two elves by themselves.
"I always forget the formal responses..."
Araina said as she scratched her head.
Izunia then spoke up.
"Me too... Although i think i am getting the hang of it. Doesn't help that Lord Evunial doesn't care how we talk to him.."
Araina then spoke.
"Right? I can't think of a time Lady Pirotess isn't scolding him."
"Hahaha"
The two laughed for a moment before Araina looked out over the lake.
"It's amazing... I never thought the day would come when I was happy to learn about our people... That I would speak a language solely ours."
Izunia smiled as she looked out to the lake as well before noticing water hitting the ground next to her and looking over to see tears running down Araina's face.
Izunia then quickly spoke.
"What's wrong Araina?"
Araina wiped her tears as she replied.
"For so long I hated so much about our people. Our long lives, filled with nothing but pain, our resilience to live through that pain... But most of all, I hated us because we produced a monster like my father... A man who ruins everything and everyone he touches. I used to think we deserved our suffering simply because no one thought to suffocate him in his sleep..."
Izunia then inquired.
"And now?"
Araina then replied.
Now... I see we are more than "him", All the things he locked away from us. Languages, traditions, and religions, all hidden because he saw us as "unworthy" as if any of it belongs to him!"
Araina then took a breath.
"Now I see strength, power, it doesn't have to mean cruelty... And yet I still fear the very thought of him... Do you know what he would do if he found out about my sight? That I had a summon!? That I had any power at all?... He'd force me to... to..."
Izunia then hugged Araina.
"You don't have to worry about that. Lord Evunial wouldn't let him touch you..."
Izunia then stepped back and spoke.
"Come on, let's get back inside. I still have to go and see my tribe today..."
Araina then inquired.
"How long has it been?"
Izunia then replied as they walked toward the main gate.
"Months... Ever since I joined Lord Evunial."
Araina then gasped.
"Oh, Izunia. Surely they miss you."
Izunia then replied.
"I know... I've been using my life debt as an excuse but really, Im just scared to face them after what I did..."
Araina then spoke.
"But you were only trying to help. To protect them from the trolls..."
Izunia looked down at the ground as she continued.
"It doesn't matter what I was trying to do...I got my tribe's best hunters killed... My friends... And it would have all been for nothing if Evunial hadn't shown up..."
Izunia then looked up and sighed.
"But still. I've put it off for long enough and Lord Evunial gave me leave so..."
Araina then placed a finger on her chin for a moment before speaking.
"I will go with you then..."
Izunia then looked over at Araina
"You don't have to do that..."
Araina then smiled kindly.
"I know, I want to..."
Izunia then replied.
"Thank you..."
Just then the duo saw the front gate opening and Elven soldiers atop great elks rode out onto the road led by Evunial and his great white stag.
Izunia and Araina then quickly ran up to the Elven lord.
Evunial then noticed the girls and smiled brightly.
"Ah, Araina, Izunia did your training go well today?"
Araina then walked to the front of Evunial's great elk Arion and scratched his fur before replying.
"It was great Lord Evunial! I finally summoned Ymir! Though Master Carnen says i still need practice."
Evunial then thought for a moment.
"(I had Carnen teach her an Ice Primal Summon since her build seemed compatible but I did not expect results so soon. Perhaps elder blood increases the speed of level gains...")
Evunial the spoke.
"That's great news Araina! Ymir is a powerful summon. But even so, make sure to heed Master Carnen's words. They come from experience."
Evunial then turned his attention to Izunia.
"Is Naris behaving himself?"
Izunia seemed to shrink from the question as she caressed the great elk who snorted happily.
"I don't think Master Naris likes me very much..."
Evunial then leaned over toward Izunia and spoke.
"Wanna know a secret?.. "
Izunia then nodded expectingly.
"Naris doesn't like anybody... Haha, He barely likes me..."
The High Commander said with a laugh.
"But that being said, He is the best suited to training you for now. But don't worry, his reports about your progress are positive. So it looks like you're winning him over at least."
"Izunia looked surprised by the revelation and sighed with slight relief.
Izunia then took a step back as Abraxas and Katan rode up next to Evunial. The former on an armored silver elk and the latter on horseback.
"Preparations are complete Lord Commander."
Abraxas said, his cold silver eyes barely acknowledging the girls.
Izunia undeterred and now curious spoke up.
Preparations? Lord Evunial, what's going on? Where are you going?"
Evunial then sat up straight on his mount wiith a smile as he answered.
"Oh, We are just heading out to deal with some pests. Shouldn't take too long..."
Izunia then looked at the rest of the battle-ready elves.
"A bit much for some pests don't you think?"
Izunia said unconvinced.
Katan then spoke with a charming smile.
"Oh, you can never be too prepared ladies..."
Evunial then spoke.
"Exactly... And we should be back even before you...you're still going to visit your clan today right? No chickening out this time?"
Izunia then nodded with a determined smile.
Evunial then smiled.
"Good, Be back soon. Namárië (Farewell)"
The Elven commander then pulled on his elk's reigns and led the detachment down the road.
"Huh... I wonder what pests he's talking about..."
Izunia said as she watched the riders leave.
Araina then spoke matter-of-factly.
"They are heading to deal with Varland most likely..."
Izunia then quickly looked over at Araina.
"Huh? What makes you say that?"
Araina then raised her hands as she shrugged.
"Why else would he bring Katan?"
Izunia then replied.
"But why not just tell us? Why keep it a secret?.."
Araina then sighed before replying.
"I'm sure he would have told you if I wasn't there...He probably thinks I still want to watch Varland suffer for all he did to me..."
Izunia then stepped in front of Araina stopping her in her tracks.
"Don't you?.."
Araina then looked at the growing tree in the middle of the courtyard before looking back at Izunia.
"Honestly, I don't care what happens to Varland anymore... I have more than I ever thought I deserved... I go to sleep feeling safe... I wake up looking forward to the day. And I have people who care about me and not just what they can use me for..."
Araina then took a breath.
"Varland can die under Evunial's boot or in his bed fifty years from now... It makes no difference to me. He holds no power over me anymore..."
Izunia then looked at Araina confused.
"But how? How can you just let it go? All that hate...the anger..."
Araina then stepped forward and placed a hand on Izunia's cheek as she smiled kindly.
"There is a part of me that will always be angry and hurt... I just realized life is too short to let that part control me... Even for us..."
Izunia nodded as she took in Araina's words...
"Now, you should go get ready. We have a dark elf clan to go see..."
Araina said, her smile still present.
Izunia smiled back as she replied.
Ok! I will meet you by the stables..."
Sometime later
Araina walked toward the stables. Her blue and white fur-lined robes were now covered by a black travel cloak.
As she went, she passed the training grounds and noticed Anders shooting arrows at a target and stopped to watch.
His shots were clean and precise. Again and again, he hit dead center before missing completely as his hands began to shake.
"Dammit... Not again..."
The blue-haired man said as he put his bow down and pulled a vial of liquid out of a pouch he had on his waist.
He then tried to open the vial but it slipped out of his hands due to his shaking. And as he went to pick it up, Araina's slender hand reached it first.
Araina then opened the vial and handed it over to Anders.
Anders then quickly drank the contents and after a few breaths, his shaking stopped.
"Thank you..."
Anders said as he sat on a nearby bench still catching his breath.
Araina then walked over to the bench and replied.
"You're welcome, Anders right?"
Anders then leaned forward resting his arms on his thighs as he replied.
"That's right. The one and only..."
Araina then replied.
"I wanted to thank you for all the information you and your brother have given about the slave merchant routes. It's helped us save many elves..."
Anders then chuckled.
"Ha, ha, it's not like we had much of a choice, my lady... But your thanks are appreciated..."
Araina then continued.
"And I heard what happened to you... Though I know what your purpose was, I am sorry that happened to you..."
Anders then looked at Araina and replied.
"My Lady... There is nothing for you to be sorry for... My brother and I were just mercenaries... We followed the money and knew what it could cost us...It just so happened that this time it led us to you... And then just so happened that you were being protected by a god..."
Araina then questioned.
"A God?..."
Anders then spoke as he gestured to the area around them.
"What else would you call him? Raises a veritable kingdom from nothing, holds command over grotesque creatures and beings of unmatched beauty in equal measure and can raise the dead with the same ease as breathing... I don't know what they call that in your tongue, but in mine, it's a God..."
Anders then stood up and continued.
"But I got to get back to training... Thank you again for your help, my lady..."
Araina then nodded her head and continued on her way to the stables.
Once there she found Izunia and the stag Dvalinn waiting for her.
Izunia was also now wearing a black travel cloak.
The dark elf then helped Araina up and behind her on the great elk before the duo left the fortress.
SOUTHEAST OF THE MOUNTAINS ON THE BORDER OF BAHARUTH:
Evunial and his men made their way down the mountain pass leading to Varland's estate.
Evunial stopped as he caught the smell of something in the air.
"You smell that?"
Evunial asked.
Katan then answered.
"Smell what?"
Abraxas then spoke up.
"There is blood on the air..."
Katan then spoke.
"Blood? That's not good."
The group then picked up speed down the road.
As they continued, Evunial saw something pinned against a tree.
"A body..."
Evunial said getting everyone's attention.
As they got closer Katan spoke.
Looks like one of Varland's men. What the hell happened here?"
Evunial dismounted and approached the body before crouching and examining it, his golden eye glowing slightly.
"Looks like he was hit in the heart with an arrow and then disemboweled... Slowly.
Katan then spoke as he looked around.
"Whoever did it might still be around..."
Evunial then stood up and mounted his great elk.
"No..the body is cold. Let's hurry.."
Evunial said before pulling on the reigns.
ON THE WESTERN SIDE OF THE MOUNTAINS:
Izunia and Araina shared a seat on Dvalinn as they made their way out of the protective snowstorm and into the calm of the forest just outside it.
Araina, who was sitting behind Izunia then spoke.
"I was wondering about something Izunia..."
Izunia then replied.
"Shoot,"
Araina then continued.
"All the stories I heard about the dark elves say they all moved to the Great Forest of Evasha around three hundred years ago.."
Izunia then replied.
"Yes, it was known as the great migration."
Ariana then rubbed her chin as she continued.
"Well, Why did your tribe go so far north into the mountains instead of settling with the rest of your people?"
Izunia then answered.
"I don't know much about it, but there was some sort of dispute between the leaders of my house; house Lemon and one of the other elder houses; House Blueberry over the destination of the migration. In the end, a few other houses joined us in the mountains and the rest went to the forest."
Izunia then took a breath.
"But I'm sure the village elders will be able to tell you more..."
Araina then looked down saddened
"Ah, You think they wouldn't mind speaking with me? Even though..."
Izunia then spoke up.
"Even though you have "his" blood in your veins..."
Araina then nodded.
Izunia then replied.
"Though it is true most dark elf tribes are wary of those with elder blood. My clan is so far removed It's all mostly legends now. I could hardly believe my eyes when I first saw Evunial... My people will be more curious then anything, I think..."
Just then Dvalinn stopped in his tracks causing the two passengers to catch their balance.
Izunia then leaned over to the stag's side and patted him.
"What's wrong? Is something out there?"
The stag snorted and dug its feet into the ground in response as a low chittering sound came from bushes all around them.
"Shit... That's not good..."
Izunia's said as her eyes widened and she leaned back up and whispered to Araina.
"Something's coming, hold on to me tightly..."
Araina then wrapped her arms around Izunia's waist and held on tight.
Just then, a giant insect lunged from the bushes in front of them. A red and black mass of legs, Its mandibles open wide and eager. But before they could find flesh Dvalinn raised up on his back legs and charged forward meeting the massive insect's pincers with his diamond-like antlers.
The golden brown Hart then turned its head with force taking the creature off balance and slamming it into the ground.
Dvalinn then quickly jumped backward as another monster erupted from the ground below.
"What the hell are these things!"
Araina yelled out as she held on for dear life.
Izunia then replied as Dvalinn dodged yet another giant insect.
"Giant centipedes! Extremely dangerous predators. But they hunt in deep underground caves... They shouldn't be here."
Araina yelled.
"I don't think they know that!"
Araina then raised a hand and spoke as a magic circle appeared around her.
"But this is a good opportunity to try one of the spells Master Carnen taught me..."
《BREATH OF FROST》
A torrent of frozen air then engulfed two of the centipedes freezing them in place. Leaving only three more.
Izunia then spoke as they dodged another strike.
"Wow, Araina! That spell was amazing! But check this out."
《MARTIAL ART: ABILITY BOOST》
She then jumped from her mount as one of the beasts lunged at her.
She then dodged under the beast's mouth and stabbed it sliding down its length as she did.
She then spoke again as the other centipede attacked its mandibles wide open.
《MARTIAL ART:EVASION》
Using her dagger as an anchor Izunia jumped over the monster and threw two throwing knives into the top of its head as the third rushed her as she hit the ground.
She used her daggers to perry its powerful pincers before the centipede swung upwards putting Izunia off balance. It then followed up with a downward strike poised to cleave the dark elf in two.
Izunia then spoke.
《MARTIAL ART: FORTRESS》
The strike bounced off Izunia's daggers leaving the beast's underside side open.
《MARTIAL ART: TWIN BLADE STRIKE》
Izunia then swung both blades downwards cutting an X into the monster before it fell over dead.
"Damn...looks like four in a row is still my limit.."
Izunia said disappointed between heavy breaths.
The remaining two centipedes then rushed toward Izunia from the side.
Izunia then raised her right hand as Araina grabbed her by the hand and lifted her on Dvalinn as they ran by
Dvalinn then jumped and easily dodged the two beasts.
As the two giant bugs crashed into each other Araina raised her hand.
《GREATER ICE SPEAR》
As she spoke a javelin of ice tore through the air and impaled the two creatures in the head killing them.
Dvalinn gracefully landed with the two elves safe on his back.
"Good job Araina! You took them both out with one spell!"
Izunia exclaimed.
Araina blushed a bit as she replied.
"You were great too Izunia! I'm just glad I could help."
Araina then looked down at the dead centipedes and spoke.
"I've never seen creatures like these before..."
Izunia then spoke.
"Something must be pushing them out of the deep caves to hunt... I will have to ask when we get to the village. We aren't far now."
Izunia then pulled on the reigns and Dvalinn took off down the road.
Soon after the duo came to a small mountain pass with many caverns and caves.
Izunia then spoke as she dismounted.
"Time to call the welcome party..."
Araina then replied.
"How do we do that?"
Izunia then took a few steps forward and whistled a strange melody.
A few moments passed before a feminine voice rang out from the caves above them.
"Izunia!? Is that you?"
Izunia then reluctantly replied, recognizing the voice.
"Yes, it's me..."
The dark elf then jumped down from her perch and approached Izunia.
The beautiful dark elf was a little taller than Izunia and had the look of a woman in her early twenties. She had long gray hair with red eyes and was wearing light form-fitting leather armor with a bow and full quiver strapped to her back.
Izunia held her head low in shame.
"It's... All my fault..."
Izunia said as the woman quickly ran up and hugged her tight.
"Shh... thank the Mother you're safe..."
As the two embraced three other dark elves all with gray hair and red eyes. Came from the shadows with happy and surprised expressions.
They were all wearing tight-fitting leather armor.
"It's her!"
The first one said. He had short, wild gray hair and wore a hood.
"Izunia!..."
Another exclaimed. She had medium-length curly hair that slightly covered her eyes.
"Welcome back Izunia..."
The third said as they all stopped in front of Izunia. He had long hair tied in a ponytail.
Izunia then looked up at the woman holding her and spoke.
"But.. Aren't you angry with me?"
The woman looked at Izunia with kind eyes as she brushed some hair out of the young elf's face.
"Of course not... Im just glad my daughter is safe and home. Those letters of yours could only curb my worry so much..."
The two then ended their embrace and Izunia stepped back and spoke.
"I'm sorry mother, I wanted to come back sooner but..."
The older dark elf then raised a hand.
"I understand..."
The other three dark elves then approached Izunia.
"It's so good to see you safe Izunia!"
The curly-haired elf said as she grabbed Izunia's hands and cupped them in her own.
Izunia smiled as she looked at the young elf.
"Imerin, It's so good to see you too."
Izunia then looked at the hooded elf
"You too Valdi."
Her eyes then fell remaining elf.
"Kirth... I..."
The young elf then spoke up.
"It's ok Izunia... My brother was always rushing into danger... At least I know he died a hero protecting the village..."
Izunia looked at Kirth confused.
"But that's not..."
Her mother then chimed in.
"Dear, aren't you going to introduce us to your friend?"
Izunia then quickly turned to see Araina sheepishly waiting on Dvalinn.
"Oh yes, of course, This is Araina, my friend, and Dvalinn, my elk."
Izunia then clicked her tongue prompting the great Stagg to come over.
Izunia's mother then spoke.
"Ah, yes, you mentioned them in your letters. Though I can hardly believe my eyes..."
The three young elves then rushed Araina and Dvalinn with equal parts curiosity and wonder.
Imerin marveled at Dvalinn as she rubbed her hands through his fur.
"Wow, he is so soft and pretty!"
Valdi then spoke.
"Look at his antlers! I think he is even bigger than a Gigahorn Elk!"
Kirth for his part was far more interested in the rider.
"Hel... Hello Araina, my name is Kirth...it is very nice to meet you.."
He said as he tried not to blush.
Araina smiled sweetly as she replied.
"It is very nice to meet you too, Kirth"
Kirth then offered a hand and helped Araina down from Dvalinn.
Izunia's mother then smiled and spoke.
"You're being so sweet Kirth, it's not like you..."
Kirth then blushed as he stepped back.
"I. I don't know what you're talking about..."
The eldest elf present chuckled to herself before looking at Araina.
"Mmhmm... Now Araina, My name is Imara Lemon. Izunia wrote a lot about you, and your heritage in her letters..."
Araina tilted her head down attempting to hide her eyes but was surprised when she felt a hand on her chin raising her head back up.
Imara looked at Araina's eyes for a moment before continuing.
"It truly is a beautiful trait your family has, But you are not responsible for your father's sins. You need not lower your eyes here. You are among kin."
Araina was taken aback by Imara's kind words.
"I...Thank you..."
Imara then stepped back her smile still evident.
"Of course dear... Now let's head into the village. I'm sure everyone will be so happy to see Izunia and her new friends."
Imara then turned her attention to the three other dark elves.
"I won't be gone long, Kirth, you're in charge..."
Kirth then jumped for joy.
"Yesss!"
Valdi sighed in response.
"Maaan.."
Imara then leaned over to Imerin and whispered.
"Keep the boys in line..."
Imerin nodded her head with determination.
"Yes ma'am!"
Imara, Izunia, and Araina then entered one of the caves.
Again a noticed the walls covered in light webs as Izunia and Imara led her through a maze-like path with tunnels leading in all directions until they reached a large and verdant cave with a river running through it. And nestled next to the river was a village.
Imara then spoke.
Araina, welcome to the village of Duskwell."
The three elves then left Dvalinn by the river to graze before heading into the village.
As they walked Imara addressed Izunia.
"So am I right in assuming your return isn't permanent..."
Izunia looked down and away as if trying to escape.
"I have to speak with the elders..."
Imara then replied, disappointment in her voice.
"And then you will leave again..."
Izunia the replied unable to look at her mother.
"I still have a life debt to repay... You know I can't stay..."
Imara then replied.
"So this Evunial would deprive you of your home?...your family?..."
Izunia then stopped walking as she shook her head and placed a hand on her chest.
"No! Lord Evunial would never do that! He is always pushing me to come home..."
Imara stopped in her tracks as well and quickly replied.
"Then why not stay...Surely he would understand..."
Izunia then looked at the ground with shame written all over her face. Flashes of her friends' last moments going through her head.
"Because he can make me stronger... And it has to have meant something... Their deaths have to have meant... Something..."
Imara's eyes softened as she looked at Izunia.
"Oh daughter..."
Just then two dark elf children ran up to them
"Hello, Ms.Imara!"
The girls said in unison.
"Hello, girls."
Imara said with a motherly smile.
The two girls smiled brightly as they each grabbed one of Izunia's hands.
"Izunia! Your back!"
One of them yelled out as they swayed back and forth. Their long gray hair blew in the breeze.
Izunia'a mood brightened as she looked at the girls and couldn't help but smile.
"Hello Tani, Mica. You're getting so big!"
The two girls giggled happily before setting their sights on Araina.
"Izunia, Izunia! Who's that?"
The girls asked in unison.
Izunia giggled sweetly before answering.
"That's Araina. She's my friend so be nice..."
The two girls then jumped in front of Araina.
"Hello Araina!, I'm Tani and this is my sister Mica..."
Araina then bent down to eye level with the two young elves and greeted them with a smile.
"It's very nice to meet both of you."
The two girls then gasped.
"Your eyes! They're so pretty! And your hair!"
Araina's heart swelled as the two girls played with her hair giggling all the while.
Imara then spoke as she shooed the girls away.
"That's enough girls. Im sure you have chores to do..."
"Awwwwe!.."
The girls exclaimed.
Izunia then chimed in.
"Go on girls I am sure Araina will play with you when you're done if you ask nicely..."
The girls then looked at Araina.
"Pleeease will you play with us later!"
The girls asked in unison.
Araina then playfully placed a finger on her chin as if thinking...
"Hmmm... Ok"
The two girls then jumped for joy.
"Yay!"
They exclaimed before running off.
Araina smiled as she watched them leave before following Imara and Izunia.
As the trio came close to the village center Araina
looked up and screeched.
"Ahhhh! Look out Izunia, Imara!"
The two dark elves in question looked back at Araina confused.
"What's wrong dear?"
Imara asked concerned.
Araina then pointed up and ahead of them at a giant spider peeking over a building at them.
Izunia and Imara looked in the direction she was pointing and began laughing.
Araina looked on confused by their reaction.
After a moment the two dark elves composed themselves and Izunia spoke.
"I'm sorry Araina. I didn't mean to laugh. Your reaction was just too good... That's just a statue of the Mother... "
"The Mother?"
Araina asked looking back at the spider as the trio took a corner into the village center.
At the center of the village stood a massive statue of a white spider with red eyes.
"Imara then spoke.
"The mother, our guardian, and our protector. She welcomed our people into these caves four hundred years ago. And we have worshipped her and her children ever since."
Araina looked at the giant statue slightly creeped out.
"Her children?..."
Imara noticed Araina's unease and moved behind her as she replied.
"Oh, yes. Her children guard the tunnels leading into the deep caves. Protecting us from the terrors below. So long as we provide... Sacrifice."
Araina then quickly turned around to face Imara.
"Sacrifice?!"
Izunia then chimed in.
"Mom..."
Imara then chuckled.
"Oh, don't look so worried... Luckily for us, our eight-legged friends adore fruit. And in exchange, they give us their silk which we use in everything, from clothes to medicine to food..."
Imara then ran her fingers through her long silver hair as she continued.
"The elders even believe that it was the spider silk in our diet that gave us our silver hair and red eyes, but who knows..."
Araina then looked back at the statue. A look of unease still clearly on her face as Izunia spoke up having remembered something.
"Oh, Mother, speaking of the deep caves. We ran into some Giant Centipedes in the forest on the way here. They weren't passed the repellent totems but I've never seen them on the surface before. Did something happen?"
Imara then looked at Izunia and replied.
"I have heard the hunters talking about strange things going on in the deep caves but your father would know more. He is the Master of the Hunt after all..."
Izunia looked down as if in thought before looking back at Imara.
"Ah I see, and how is Father?..."
Imara then smiled as she heard a commotion ahead of them.
"Oh, looks like you can ask him yourself."
Just then someone moving at incredible speed blew past Imara and snatched up Izunia faster than she could react into a tight hug.
"MY LITTLE LEMON DROP IS HOME!!"
Araina looked on surprised by the sudden situation but couldn't help but giggle at the sight she was witnessing.
A tall, burly dark elf with slicked-back silver hair was on the verge of tears as he held an unamused Izunia and rocked side to side.
"OH THANK THE MOTHER FOR YOUR RETURN!"
Imara sighed before tapping the doting father on the shoulder.
"Ahvas, Dear, our daughter needs to breathe..."
Ahvas then looked down at Izunia who was now slumped over.
Ahvas then quickly put her down and bowed apologetically.
The big elf wore tribal-like armor. His chest was bare except for a spider web tattoo that covered his chest and arms. His legs were covered in furs and skins of various beasts fashioned into durable protection. And on his back, he had a powerful-looking gold and silver spear peaking out from under a great bear fur cloak
"Oh sorry, Izunia! I was just so worried... How could you leave without so much as a word?"
Izunia looked at the ground in shame.
"I am sorry dad... I never wanted to make you worry. Things just... didn't go as planned...I...and I..."
Izunia then felt her father's gentle and strong hand on her head.
"I know what it is to lose friends and comrades. Itan, Missau, Inun, ... they were good boys, and good hunters. They chose to follow you... They were not forced. Do not dishonor them by taking their choice away. Live with their memory and do better..."
Izunia nodded before looking up at her father.
Ahvas smiled kindly as he reached behind his back and grabbed his spear.
"Good...now where is the man you owe a life debt to?..."
Ahvas then started flailing his spear around and yelling.
"SO I CAN KILL HIM AND END IT!!! WHAT PERVERSE ACTS HAS HE DEMANDED OF YOU? WHAT HORRORS HAS HE PUT MY DAUGHTER'S BODY THROUGH?!"
Izunia then blushed profusely as she waved her hands around.
Then the loud sound of a smack rang out.
The next moment Ahvas was on the ground with a welt on his head as Imara stood next to him fuming with her hand balled into a fist.
"Dear... Please don't say such absurd things with a guest present..."
Ahvas then rubbed his head before looking up and noticing Araina.
"Oh, haha, Sorry, got a little carried away there."
Ahvas then stood up and offered a hand to Araina.
"Nice to meet you, I'm Izunia's father Ahvas."
Araina then replied with a smile.
"I'm Araina, it's nice to meet you too."
Ahvas then looked Araina over for a moment.
"Araina... So you're one of the Elder blood."
Ariana then nodded hesitantly.
Ahvas then leaned close and smiled.
"Izunia should have sent word she was bringing royalty... Now we have two things to celebrate!"
Ahvas then yelled out into the Village. His voice was now calm but commanding.
"Everyone hear me!"
Villagers stopped what they were doing and began to come.
Ahvas then grabbed Araina and Izunia by the hand and lifted them.
"My daughter has come home safe after besting the Trolls! And a princess has come with her from the land of our cousins! Today is a blessed day! Praise the Mother!"
The crowd that had formed then yelled back.
"Praise the Mother!"
Ahvas then let go of the girls and spoke.
"Come! To the great hall! We feast!"
The crowd then all headed toward a big building in the center of town.
Izunia then spoke as she and Araina followed along.
"Father I have to ask you something about the deep caves."
Ahvas then replied not missing a step.
"It can wait, Lemon drop. Let us enjoy the day!"
The burly dark elf then turned to Araina.
"And Princess, I'd like you to tell me everything you know about this...Evunial..."
Araina gave off a nervous laugh as Izunia sighed in defeat.
BACK AT THE WESTERN MOUNTIAN PASS:
Two elves walked out of the forest covered in snow. One in white and the other in black.
"Dammit! Lost the scent in that snowstorm!"
The one in black exclaimed angrily as he shook the snow from his hood and white hair. As he did, the elf in white thought out loud ignoring the snow melting on his golden hair.
"Hmm... It's powerful magic that both changes the weather and is meant to disorient and discourage intruders... The caster responsible must be capable of sixth their magic at least..."
The elf in black then spoke as he wiped off the last of the snow on him.
"What are you on about now?"
The blond elf then turned to his brother as he replied.
"Do you think it's true? That an Elf of the elder blood is here? As strong as Father?"
The white-haired elf then looked to think for a moment before replying.
"Well, if this stupid snowstorm spell is as strong as you say, then it would make sense... Though it couldn't be one of our siblings... We would know... But... If Grandfather was anything like Father then it could be an uncle or aunt... Either way, it's not why we are here..."
The elf in white and gold then replied.
"You are right... We will get our sister and then see what father wants to do next...we just have to figure out a way past this spell..."
The elf in black then sniffed the air.
"Wait... I smell something..."
The duo then followed the scent till they found a small clearing with giant centipedes covered in ice.
The elf in black then walked up to one of the frozen beasts and tore a leg off of it before taking a bite.
His eyes fogged over as the creature's last moments played in his head.
After a moment the elf began to laugh hysterically.
"What? What did you see? Did you catch her scent?"
The golden elf asked.
The white-haired elf then calmed himself and replied.
"Yes... And it looks like our big sister has become quite the little caster...and beautiful as well.
Father will be pleased..."
The golden elf then spoke.
"Good, let's collect her and be on our way..."
The golden elf then looked at his brother knowingly.
"I know that smile... What else did you see?"
The elf then replied as a sinister grin crept across his face.
"She has a little "Thin-Blood" with her... And she...looks...delicious..."
