Chapter 12 - Councils Judgement by Kirkmenistan

Author's Notes:

oh all right then...

The elder was amused by Jet's story about the goblin egg thieves.

q73; You do realise, Jet, that at some point you will have to do business with the goblins?D

q73; Why? D

q73;They are the only bank the wizard community has.D

q73; That's rather foolish. Putting your entire financial stability in one nest. D

q73; Yes it is… Anyhow, you will be submitted to the trials this year.D

q73; Excellent! When do they start? D

q73; Next week. Prepare yourself. D

q73; Elder, why so close to the winter? D

q73; To weed out the weak.D

q73; Brother, why have you returned so early? D

q73; He has been trained. D

q73; Really? So soon? Bring him before me. D

The dragon that stood in front of the 'alpha' could only be described by the entire female population with one word.

Glorious.

His muscles were well defined, as hard as iron. His fangs long and sharp. His claws clean and curled. His tail long and sinuous. His neck fine and arching. His eyes deep and searching, and his size… he was almost as large as the 'alpha', doing so without a single ounce of fat.

The 'alpha' saw none of this. He blindly saw what he wanted to see; another young dragon eager to test himself.

q73; Submit him to the Trials. D

Jet was laughing.

He was now entered into the Trial of Flight. His challenge was to negotiate the ravine he'd practiced in last year. Jet doubted this was a coincidence, but shrugged it off and sent a grateful nod towards his Elder. He was currently soaring through, flapping his great wings and keeping him speeding towards the target. Gracefully overtaking any and all dragons that were also taking the test. Ahead, the ravine once again narrowed. Diving through, his wings partially collapsed, he started to speed up as he lost altitude. As he exited the ravine, he breached the sound barrier, sending three of the other dragons straight into the cliff face as they grew too disoriented to fly straight.

It was one of his favourite things to do.

He rounded the final bend, and landed at the start point. The rather weedy old dragon that Jet guessed was a scholar recorded his time.

q73; Forty three drips D

Jet was pleased. He beat his old time!

Jet's elder was worried now. His Student was entering the Trial of Knowledge. One that all scholars (such as Jet was supposed to be) would have to pass. Everything that he had attempted to teach the young dragon-child would be compiled into this one test.

Inside the cave, Jet lay before two dragonesses. They questioned him on everything he had learned. All that he may have gleaned from his Elder's passing comments. He remembered everything; from proper technique of creating a cave, to how to fly with the least effort.

Though most of this knowledge didn't fit him very well, since he had his own methods that worked best for him. He was tripped up a few times, but remembered the 'proper' way to do things regardless of his own methods.

Jet stood before the 'alpha'. It was time for the trial he would be most looking forward to; The Trial of Fire. He was to simply melt a piece of rock until only a puddle was left on the floor.

All of the dragons would attempt this at the same time in front of the 'alpha'. Whoever melted the rock the most within the time would win.

Jet growled with pleasure. This would be easy.

q73; BEGIN! D

Immediately several dragons started with a near yellow hot flame, using a slow burn method to allow them to continue for longer. Jet however was having none of this. The roaring white hot flame poured from his maw, enveloping the rock. Within minutes only half of the rock remained. Several dragons were shocked by this young one. He was only pausing to breathe. Soon the rest of the dragons caught on to the change in the game. But, exhausted from their flight, the other dragons had little fire to use in order to even attempt to beat Jet.

As Jet's rock was melted to the last drip, silence enveloped the cave. Only one other dragon had ever finished melting the stone in that time. The dragons looked to the 'alpha' on what to do. He was equally shocked. Ever since he had accomplished that feat, he had directed the dragons to use a different kind of stone, primarily granite, so none would beat his time.

One thing that Jet knew about dragon traditions was that when a dragon achieved higher than all others in the Trials, he was given the right to challenge the current Leader of the clan for the right of leadership. This was his plan.

Jet's voice rose above the silence, shattering it with his simple words.

q73; I challenge the... 'alpha' to his title as the Leader of the Romanian Clan. What say you? D

q73; How dare you challenge me! By the blood of Blacksnout there has never been such an insult to a clan leader. D

q73; Well then, punish me. Fight me. Put me in my place! D

q73; Jet! What are you doing? D

q73; What we should have done in the beginning. We are a noble and ancient race. It would be a mark of shame upon the entire species if this… this lump of hide and gristle to rule over us anymore. D

The alpha was fuming at these remarks. The little shit had the stones to confront him on his inability to lead?

q73; Very well. You fight for the clan? For the right to rule? We shall meet above ground tonight, above the lake. May the winner rule D

Hundreds of dragons lined the lake. The alpha was sitting on the land, waiting for the little shit to show up. He eyed the skies, watching for a shape. In his hindsight he probably shouldn't have decided to fight the black dragon at night. But his experience would pay off. The thing that Jet didn't realise was that he had been saving his fire for such an occasion. His reserves were massive. He felt as if the sun itself was burning within him.

Then a whistling could be heard across the lake. They saw a black shape skimming the surface of the black water. Its talons skimming the surface creating noise as to be noticed. Jet smiled as he flew towards the battle. This was what dragons did, this was life.

This was beautiful.

He watched with incredulity as the elder dragon commenced to flap his wings, faster and faster. Until he began to slowly fly upwards. He drew closer and closer, and then his world changed colours. His eyes were blinded as the elder blew a bright sheet of flame as far as he could, destroying any night vision that Jet may have had. In response, he flew up, as he always had.

The alpha smiled. His plan was working. His beauties would take care of this little shit. It would be said that he fled from his powerful fire. His reputation would remain. But then something he didn't expect to happen occurred. He watched as several streams of fire battled against two others. He heard screeches and dragons were injured. He saw great figures slowly fall. He watched as his wives fell from the sky, one by one.

q73; Cheating, no good, double crossing… D

'There is no such thing a cheating in war, only winning and losing'

If Jet could slap himself, he would. Several times over. He was ambushed by the 'alpha's' mates as he flew through the thick cloud layer. All of them could hardly see a thing, but Jet still had a trick to use. Channelling some of his fire to his eyes he picked out no less than ten of the dragonesses. But he was not alone either, he was soon joined on either side by Redclaw and Silence. Their flapping started to synchronise as the first of the ten came into view.

Jet's sharp claws rent large holes in the first mates wings as they flew past, her screams of anguish accompanied her all the way down to the lake. Jet knew that this would in all probability kill the older dragon. He remembered his being knocked unconscious by descending from not even half this height.

The second and third were dispatched similarly. It was when they came across a pack of three that the problems began. The first was easily dispatched, but then the other two attacked the rear of Jet. Redclaw assaulted one, landing on her back and lashing her torso and wings with her viciously spiked tail. Her lungs were punctured and enough holes were made in her wings for her to fall to the earth. This one died quietly, albeit messily, her arcs of blood swung wide across the lake as she fell.

Silence handled hers in a much more gruesome way. Quietly making her way directly above the dragon, she struck with all four of her needle sharp-clawed paws. Puncturing both the dragon's eyes and ears. Her ears so deeply they destroyed the finer mechanics of the ear. Mainly the ones responsible for balance…

Devoid of all sense of sight and direction, the dragon then proceeded to plummet to the ground, attempting to gain some understanding of where the hell she was in the world, screaming all the way down.

The last four started to flee when they saw what was happening to their fellow sisters. They screamed as they ran from the black and red death. All were hunted down before they left the area of the lake. Not a drop of blood was spilled on land.

The alpha watched in horror as his beauties fell one by one. All sporting dangerous wounds to their wings and torsos. Any who didn't die on the fall did when they hit the water. As his wings worked overtime to keep his obscene mass in the air, he started to hear a whistling above the sound of his own frantic flapping and breathing.

As he looked up the last things he saw were four blazing eyes.

A pair of Enormous wings.

A long tail.

A sharp scythe.

Blackness.

The bystanders watched with fascinated horror as their alpha watched his mates fall dead from the sky. As he watched death coming for him. As he fell to the lake with his head cleaved from his body. Jet landed upon the stone in which the alpha had stood prior to the fight. Redclaw and Silence swiftly landed beside him, claiming him in front of all those who would attempt to steal him from them with a long, slow, languid licks.

Jet smirked, and turned to face the still stunned dragons. His dragons.

q73; A new age has begun. Let the word spread. D

In the darkness, another dragon stood. Watching the growing pools of red in the lake. He dove down to the bottom and stood over the decapitated corpse. The Elder mourned the necessary loss.

q73; Farewell… Brother D
