The Promise

Well, here I am again and like I said before I looked into the issue of the corvettes possibly not having shields. Well I still can't say for sure, as the sites I looked at both said different things. Two of the sites said they didn't have shields, one said they did, and another said they had weak shields. I'm further confused as how they would have shields as you can shoot out a corvette's engines with a saber and then land on said corvette and not hit its shields in the mission long night of solace, kind of makes me want to say they don't have protective shielding. And for those who disagree, if it did have shields why was one damaged heavily by anti-air missiles at the end of the mission exodus? The shields could take a low yield nuke and keep on trucking, so how did so few missiles take one out of action? Riddle me that Batman.

Also having the ability to cryogenically freeze yourself makes finding out peoples biological age a real big pain so I am sorry if anyone is unhappy with whatever character's age I change to. I have tried to find out ages of people and how long they have been frozen for but there are a lot of gaps and unknowns, though that makes my job a bit easier as I can make something to somewhat fit into those gaps and unknowns.

With that out of the way I can say I will continue this fanfic, but I kind of would like to hear comments and critiques on how I can do better.

-I Repeat, identify yourself or be fired upon. -

-Vice Admiral Standforth, this is Gabriela the AI of the UNSC Promise of Dawn, please hold your fire, we are in need of medical assistance, and repairs. I also request you to contact colonel Holland as I have someone who he may want to meet.- said Gabriela.

-Acknowledged, medical personnel are on their way, you will be also towed to Anchor Nine for minimal repairs before transfer to a shipyard on the surface for refit and total repairs, you will also need to explain where you have been for the past twenty years. Welcome back. -

-Thank you sir- with that the signal cut out and the ship switched to emergency power as the reactors finally shut all the way down. -Naruto we will have medical personnel coming to help your friends, you may go with them, I will stay with the ship and explain a heavily edited version of what has happened. Rest assured that I will not say anything you don't want me to.'

"Thank you Gabby, contact me when the brass want to talk to me, and do tell the medics to meet me in cryo room three please." Said Naruto as he walked to the cryo chamber that held his friends. A few minutes later he stood in front of the cryo tube that held Sakura, Naruto was thinking on what he could do to help her adjust to her lost limb. Hinata and the red-haired girl would be an easy fix as Hinata would only have to heal from a puncture wound and the other girl will have to be worked on as the burns she had on her legs were pretty bad but she could fully recover with time and medical help. He looked at the tube that held Kakashi, his half dead teacher that couldn't be saved. Sure, he was alive for now but his wounds were too great. He had been stabbed twice in the abdomen by what looked like a wrist mounted energy blade, he had many of burns from plasma, and he was missing a leg and his right hand. He regretted that he didn't find the lazy man sooner, maybe then he could have survived, but there was nothing he could do now other than easing his pain as he passed. It was at this time that a group of people entered the room and looked strangely at him, ah right he was still wearing his armor. They must have thought he was an ODST that got here before them. He looked at the group of six people to find that they all looked green except for a grizzled old lieutenant who looked at the cryo pods and sighed. He stood around five feet seven inches with green eyes and greying sandy brown hair. He also had a slight scar on his chin.

"You do know that while the cryo pods kept them alive, the thawing process will agitate their wounds and they will most likely wake up in excruciating pain, right?" asked the now annoyed officer.

"Yes, but with no medical personnel on the ship at that moment and myself not knowing anything other than basic first aid, it seemed like a good idea." Said Naruto now turning to look at the officer.

"Yes, well now I will have to thaw them out one at a time and stabilize them before we can move them to the medical transport to get them to the Hopeful. I forgot to say, my name is Lieutenant James Weatherford, or you can just call me 'Doc W' as that's what the Marines call me. Do you mind telling me what I am getting into before I pop them open?"

"Yes, the pink haired girl is named Sakura my teammate and a medic, she has enough strength to toss the lot of you around like ragdolls, so you may want to strap her down before she can wake up. The blue haired girl is Hinata and she can temporarily paralyze you with her fighting style so you may want to strap her down as well. I have no clue who the redhead is so be careful with her. The masked man is my teacher, and to be honest, there is not much you can do for him other than make him comfortable as he dies. Though there is something I would like to talk about with you and him at a later date. Also my name is Naruto." Said Naruto as he took his helmet off. Most of the younger medical personnel looked at him in awe, and the doc just looked on in slight sadness at seeing that the young man had gone through more than that of some of the marines and he was younger than almost all of them. He had a few scars from his fights with the covenant but the most noticeable were the jagged one that went down his left cheek and the one that went around his right eye that looked like a crescent moon. He stood around six feet eight inches, he also had short blond hair and piercing blue eyes that seemed like they could look into your soul. What surprised them the most was that he looked younger than all of them.

Naruto noticed this and just stared at them with what the doc would call the best poker face he had ever seen. "So who do you want to start with first doc?" asked Naruto while he placed his helmet on a table that was right beside him.

"Let's start with the lass with the needle rifle round in her abdomen, she should be the easiest to fix as she is lucky the round didn't shatter on impact. If it did shatter, her intestines would have been shredded. Then we will take out the one with the burns, that should be an easy fix as well but will take more time to heal. Then next is the one that is missing her arm, the main thing I am worried about is her dying of shock. Lastly is the dying man. Is there anything else that I need to know before we start thawing them out?"

"Yeah, they don't speak English so they won't understand you."

"Perfect… well let us begin." Said doc rain as he started the process of thawing out Hinata, a few minutes later the tube opened and Hinata was lifted up and out of said tube and strapped to a stretcher. She woke up whimpering in pain, in a second Naruto was kneeling beside her trying to get her attention and to assure her she was safe.

"Hinata, you are ok, please calm down the pain will subside in a minute."

Hearing her crushes voice, she looked around blinking the tears out of her eyes and saw him kneeling beside her. "N-Naruto? What happened, where are-" "You are safe, something happened and you need to be moved to a medical facility, when you wake up I will explain our situation and everything that has happened." With that she was sedated and two of the medical staff that were with Doc Rain picked up the stretcher and started to take her to the medical transport ship but were stopped by Naruto. "Do know that if anything happens to her or any of my friends I will throw the offending party out the airlock, am I clear?" asked Naruto adding a bit of ki to his voice. The result was all the staff besides Doc W were slightly shaking in fear. The staff that were carrying Hinata nodded and exited the room quickly.

"Was it really necessary to scare my help?" asked the doc slightly agitated.

"Well I know of ONI and know of what they would do to get their hands on me and my friends so I won't take any chances." Said Naruto now watching the red-haired girl be brought out of her tube and sedated before she could even make any noise. She too was quickly taken to the ship.

"Aye, that's fair enough, I have had my dealings with ONI, I'm sure you have heard of the Orion project from your AI friend yes?" Naruto nodded at this and Doc continued "well I was apart of that and there are not many of us left in the service but what they did to us helped in the short term but in the long run it really fucked a lot of people up. ONI, quietly decommissioned the project and swept it under the rug, now enough of that, let's get pinky out of here so I can help her." With that the pod was opened but they weren't ready for an angry/frightened Sakura to jump out and throw a chakra enhanced punch the Doc, the only thing that saved him from becoming a bloody smear was Naruto catching her and basically bear hugging the struggling woman.

"Sakura you are safe, there is no need to harm the medical staff, please calm down so they can help you." Said Naruto as he held the smaller struggling woman in an awkward hold half holding her in a hug and half in a head lock. (As she only has one arm, he has one around her and the other locking her arm so she can't attack anyone with it.)

She stopped struggling and saw with her still somewhat blurry vision a familiar shade of yellow. "Naruto? What… what happened where are we and… what happened to my arm?! I-I, where is my arm! Where are we! Who are- "she was cut off when a needle was jabbed into her neck curtisy of a very pale and shaken Doc Weatherford and she was out like a light about thirty seconds later. Naruto picked her up and glanced over at the now pale faced doctor. "You good doc?"

"Well to be honest I don't blame her, if I woke up in a strange place missing my arm, I would try to fight whoever got in my way to get away." He said as he watched Naruto place the girl on a stretcher. "Anyway now that the firecracker is out of the way what do you want to talk to me about your last friend, I'm guessing that it has something to do about him dying soon right?"

"Yes I as curious if it was possible to clone his brain to make him an AI, but the AI has all of his memories. Is that possible?"

"I'm afraid that we can't transfer memories, sorry but we can scan his brain to make an AI. Also it is kind of unethical to scan the brain while the donor is still alive as the scanning process destroys the brain. So what do you want to do with him?"

"I want to ask him if he wants to do it, but can you get him to regain consciousness with him being able to give us a clear answer?"

"Should be easy, but after we pop him out of the pod, I would say he has less than maybe three days till he expires." Said Weatherford as he pulled out a cigar and lit it.

"Isn't that against regulations? Smoking around your patients?"

"Son I stopped giving a fuck about that particular regulation about seven years ago. I have had nurses gripe at me for it but guess what, I'm not in an actual medical facility so technically it isn't against regulations." Said Weatherford with a grin.

Naruto just snorted and looked at where Kakashi was still frozen. "Well doc let us pop him out and go join your help on the shuttle eh. I think they would like to get away from this circus as fast as they can."

"Yeah I bet they would, you seemed to make an impression on them. Let us get this over with as I still have to patch these four up don't I?" said Weatherford as he opened the tube and lifted Kakashi out as carefully as he could and strapped him to the stretcher. With that the two picked up Kakashi and left the cryo chamber, Doc still smoking a cigar and Naruto with his helmet back on. When they reached the shuttle, Naruto helped set Kakashi on one of the beds and sat between Sakura and Hinata as the shuttle detached from the Promise and accelerated towards the UNSC Hopeful, it was what Weatherford would call the ugliest yet most beautiful thing floating in space. As it was made from two decommissioned ship breaking yards and it was a fully functional state of the art hospital floating in space. When they landed in the hanger bay they were quickly met by medical staff that worked at the station and they took the four-unconscious ninja to an operating room. Naruto being the slightly paranoid person, discreetly made three clones to watch over Kakashi, Karin, and Hinata, while he watched over Sakura while they were working on what was left of her arm. Naruto didn't trust anyone with his friends yet, especially a military organization that had a shady organization that experimented on people, and that did pretty much whatever they wanted. And he was correct in his suspicions as he spotted a woman in her early thirties to late twenties that wasn't dressed like the rest of the medical personnel take a vile of blood and some tissue from Sakura. When she made to leave Naruto stepped in front of her.

"May I ask what you are going to do with those." Asked Naruto with his arms crossed.

"That is none of your business soldier, get out of my way." The woman demanded and tried to step around Naruto only to be pushed back and her samples snatched from her hands.

"I don't care and I don't like that you are taking something that doesn't belong to you. She isn't apart of your organization so you can't just do what you want, and if you try again without her permission, I can promise you a very bad day." Said Naruto as he lit the samples on fire in his hand with a small fire jutsu.

"Why you- I'll have your head for this. She is not one of us and not human, so the regulations don't apply so I can do with her as I wish, and you have no authority to stop me. Now who is your commanding officer, I-" she was stopped when she noticed Naruto unholster his sidearm and pointed it at her head.

"So you are saying that you can do what ever you please to my friend since she isn't human and the regulations set by the UNSC don't apply to her, so the same can be said vice versa yes? I can do whatever I want to you since apparently the regulations don't apply to me either." It was at this point the woman knew she had screwed up and now was in a sticky situation. Naruto looked at her ID badge and began "So Ms. Halsey what is it that I am going to do with you… and your assistants that just tried to do the same thing with my other friends, though they were more polite in trying to do whatever it was that you were trying to do. Ah I know, maybe I should make you strip and parade you naked around the facility or maybe I should toss you in a room and lock it. Decisions, decisions… maybe I should do both." At this Dr. Halsey looked scandalized and the medical personnel that were now done with Sakura were trying to hold in their laughter seeing the stuck-up woman finally fucked with the wrong person and now she was paying for it.

This is where Weatherford spoke up not even trying to hide his chuckling. "As much as we would love to see you put the little twerp in her place, I think you have made your point, please put down your sidearm, I really don't want to have to work on someone else today. The staff are done with your friends and the three girls are being moved to the same room and the other is going to be in an attached room right beside them." At this Naruto nodded and holstered his sidearm and followed Weatherford to the room where his friends were to be kept at until they recovered. He was surprised to find Kakashi awake in his room.

"So sensei you are awake, how do you feel?" Asked Naruto as he took his helmet off and sat beside the bed Kakashi was in.

"I have felt better, but where are we? The last thing I remember was fighting and being stabbed by one of those ugly things with the weird mouths."

"Well do you want the bad news, the really bad news, or the somewhat good news?"

"What the hell start from the worse news to the good news"

"Well our world was attacked by a group of aliens calling themselves the covenant and they wiped out all but five of us. The bad news is that you are dying, but there is a procedure that they can transfer your consciousness to something else (obviously not how the AI process works but Naruto has a trick up his sleeve.), and the good news is that Sakura, Hinata, and a girl named Karin survived from our planet." Said Naruto looking at Kakashi in slight worry.

"Well I guess that isn't the worst thing to happen, how is everyone else?"

"Sakura lost her arm, and Hinata suffered a puncture wound to her abdomen. The Karin girl has some burns but they will all recover. You alright? You don't seem to put out by the news of you dying soon."

"Ah I am not too put off as I feel that I did my best in the end and I am looking forward to seeing my friends again in the afterlife." Said Kakashi looking around the room.

Before Naruto could say anything else Doc Weatherford, Halsey, and another man that he didn't recognize stepped into the room. "What can I do for you Doc?" asked Naruto slightly glaring at Halsey.

"Well, Colonel Holland wanted to talk to you about something and I have no clue what miss priss wants with you." Answered Weatherford ignoring a glare from Halsey.

"Yes, Mr. Uzumaki I am Colonel Urban Holland, and I was told in a conversation with Gabriela that you had some research that you were willing to impart to the UNSC."

"Yes, well I have solved some problems that can help you against the covenant and have improved a problem you have been having with Ais. I also want to test something later with my friend."

"Well what have you completed?" asked Holland now very curious.

"Well I have completed a prototype shielding system for your ships, though there are a few things to change and tweak before I am willing to test them again. I also have found a way to increase the lifespan of your Smart Ais roughly about seventy years, give or take a few years." Said Naruto now enjoying the gob smacked looks on everyone's faces except for Kakashi as he had no clue what was being said.

"Helloooo? Are y'all still alive?" still the three in front of him were still in shock. Naruto turned to Kakashi and said "I think I broke them."

"Yes, it seems you did. What did you tell them?"

"Basically that I have developed technology that they would sell their own soul to currently have, and I will be driving a very hard deal for them to have it." Snickered Naruto also causing Kakashi to laugh as well. At the sound of laughter Halsey snapped out of her surprise and scoffed. "That is impossible, we have been trying to replicate the covenants shield technology for years but-" "Who said it was replicated from the covenant? I didn't even know the covenant had shields when I started my project." Interrupted Naruto. "And if you have doubts about either claim you can ask Gabriela as she has recordings of the tests." Said Naruto rather coldly.

Seeing this could go sour Holland stepped in and took over the conversation and gave a stern look at Halsey to keep her mouth shut. "Well as we have confirmed what you have said with Gabriela, we are going to have to set up a Meeting with Lord Hood and a representative of ONI. Though I must ask what would you want in return for your projects?" asked Holland.

"Well I would like to have an Ai made from my teacher's brain when he passes, though I would like to test something when that happens, I would also like ONI to stop trying to take DNA samples from my friends, also I would like to have a workshop on reach where I can work at in peace. My last request is when my shielding project is complete, I would like to be given a rank in the UNSC and to be assigned to the Promise along with my friends if they so choose." Said Naruto as he stared at Holland.

"I will se what I can do. Expect to be called into a meeting in the coming weeks." Said Holland and he ushered Halsey out of the room before she could cause trouble. Though Naruto could hear the woman making angry remarks as she was forcefully moved down the halls. Naruto didn't care though, if she tried anything against his friends, he would just pick her up and chuck her out of the room. He really didn't like that woman, mostly because she thought that she could demand anything and have it presented to her on a silver platter. She also didn't seem like a people person.

"So do you have any questions or need me for anything else?" asked Weatherford as he looked over the medical charts for his three new patients.

"Yes, is it possible to have Sakura fitted for a mechanical prosthetic?" asked Naruto formulating a few ideas for an arm for the pink haired girl.

"I will have to see what kind of damage to her nerves there are before I can say if she is able to. I'll have an answer for you before the week is up." The old doctor answered before he walked out of the room. Naruto sat down in a chair by Sakura before he drifted off to sleep.

A run in with Doctor Halsey, how fun, also its been a while since I have read the books so I may have forgotten a few things. Also Gabriel didn't mention the covenant having shields when she was teaching Naruto.

So tell me what you think, I will be working on my other story next as I need to look into the halo timeline some more before I continue.
