The Promise

Hello from the middle of nowhere, I really don't have much to say other than people seem interested in this fic. Therefore, I'll keep going. Though this fic will not be totally accurate to the halo storyline as most of the history before the games are a little spotty. So, I will take some liberties in the story.

-Chapter 3 A new home.

2543, OCT 07

-Two weeks from where we left off-

It had been a hectic few days, first Kakashi lived a few more days than expected, but in the end he died. When he finally expired, the medical personnel took him into a room and hooked his body up to a rather large machine. During the time that it took for them to make the AI from Kakashi's brain, Naruto was working on his little experiment. Though it was only a partial, success. The Kakashi AI (at this point the AI will be Known as Kakashi, even though the real one is dead.) remembered certain things like who he was, who Naruto was, and what had happened, but not much else. It had taken some time to get used to but right now Naruto was waiting in the girls' hospital room, remembering who all that he had lost. Kiba and Shino were the first to fall along with team Ten from plasma rounds from a phantom. Lee and Gai had gone down fighting many of the Elites but both eventually were run through by energy swords. Naruto had no clue what happened to Tenten. Sasuke and his team had been ambushed by Three groups of Hunters. The Lightning, Mist and Earth Kage were already down for the count from the battle with Madara so they were easy kills for a group of Jackals. Gaara and his siblings had retreated into the desert, and to be honest, Naruto had no clue if they were still alive. The death that hurt him the most was Shizune's. She had been killed by a grenade and when she was blown apart, she was in front of Tsunade. Seconds after her death the older woman cracked and slaughtered many of the covenant forces, though he had no clue what had become of her. Naruto had to fight tooth and nail to save who he did and get out of there alive. Naruto was brought back to the present by the sound of Sakura waking up.

For the last two weeks the three girls hadn't woken up, but now Sakura was stirring from her long slumber. Naruto got up from his chair in the corner and kneeled beside her bed. To prevent an incident that almost happened with the doc, Sakura had been strapped down with multiple heavy-duty straps as she had unconsciously ripped herself free a few times from the normal ones.

Sakura opened up her eyes and immediately closed them as she felt the light was too bright. She tried to move but realized that she was tied down. She started to struggle until she felt a hand on her shoulder. She forcefully opened her eyes to see who was there. She really couldn't tell because everything was blurry, but she saw an outline of someone with golden blonde hair.

"Naruto?"

"How are you feeling? You have been out for a while."

"Like Tsunade-sensei threw me out of the tower. What happened and why am I tied to a bed?"

"Well, you're tied down because you have been unconsciously using your super strength and almost injured a few of the medical staff. As to what happened, in a nutshell, we were attacked at the end of the war by a group of fanatical warriors from a mixture of a few different planets. Our home has fallen, and many of our friends are dead. In the process of our escape you lost your right arm, I'm also sorry to say that Shizune is dead and that I don't know if Tsunade is dead or not. There are a few other things that I need to explain but I want to wait until the others are awake." Said Naruto as he unstrapped an eerily silent Sakura from her bed, and when he finished, Sakura latched on to him and started bawling her eyes out as reality hit her that her friends and family were most likely dead. Naruto was caught off guard and had no clue on what to do with a crying woman, so he awkwardly hugged her and gently rubbed her back as they now sat on the floor with her in his lap. Due to the noise, Weatherford poked his head into the door and saw that the pink haired girl was awake, he took a seat in a nearby chair and waited for her to calm down. It took a little while but she finally calmed down, though she was still slightly sobbing and hiccupping. It was then the old doctor decided to speak up. Though he spooked Sakura when he did.

"I'm glad that she's awake, but she should really not be moving around right now. Though now we can have that conversation about a prosthetic arm for her. To be honest she can get a mechanical arm but it will be quite painful and will take time to adjust to it. Could you tell her that since I can tell from her expression that she can't understand me." Said Weatherford.

Naruto nodded and poked Sakura in the side to get her attention. That made her swat his arm, but she was now looking at him for an explanation.

"Sakura, basically what he is saying is that you can receive a prosthetic arm if you so choose, though it will be painful and take a bit of time to adjust to it."

"Ok… what kind of Prosthetic, where are we, and who is he?" Asked Sakura now able to see clearly as her sight wasn't blurry anymore, and what she saw confused her as she hadn't seen any of the devices in this room before.
"We are in a space station called the Hopeful, a hospital station located above a planet called Reach. He is Doctor Weatherford, the man that patched you, Hinata, and Karin up. Finally the prosthetic is a mechanical arm." Answered Naruto as he picked up Sakura from the position that they both were in, and he noticed how light she was. He looked more closely and grimaced. He knew she would have lost some weight as her mussels would have atrophied but she looked so frail right now, and she was shivering. That hospital gown wasn't really helping her and it also didn't help that they were in a hospital, as they were normally cold, but the hospital was in space so it was even colder than normal. Seeing this Naruto placed her in her bed and pulled the covers over her and tucked her in.

"Thank you… tell him I will think about it." Said Sakura as she slowly dosed off.

Naruto turned to Weatherford and relayed the message. The doctor nodded and exited the room. Though Naruto didn't have but a few minutes till he was interrupted by his communicator.

"This is Uzumaki."

-Uzumaki, this is Commander Markus of ONI, do you have some time to discuss with Lord Hood and I about a deal we can make for your work? -

"Where would you like to Meet?"

-Conference room one, would that work for you? -

"I'll be there in Five minutes." With that Naruto shut off his communicator and put his helmet back on. Before he left the room he made four clones to keep watch. The four clones took positions in different parts of the room and concealed themselves. Satisfied Naruto strolled out of the room to find out what the top brass wanted. His HUD activated and started to guide him to the conference room that the meeting was going to be at.

-Expecting trouble while you are gone?-

Ah there was the new AI, it was about time for Kakashi to pipe up.

"You never know Kakashi. Halsey my try something again."

-And if she does?-

"I haven't decided what I want to do yet if she does try something."

-I look forward to seeing whatever you decide to do.-

"Don't we all. Now let's see what deal they are ready to discuss." Said Naruto as he walked through the open door of the conference room.

In the room were two Spartans, twelve ODSTs, and two men in white dress uniforms that Naruto assumed were Lord Hood and Commander Markus. (I shouldn't have to explain what Hood looks like) Commander Markus was an old grizzled combat veteran that was now in charge of the Black ops portion of ONI, he had multiple scars on his face and gray hair that was cut short. Naruto was about to introduce himself when one of the ODSTs spoke up first.

"You Lost buddy?"

"No, I am right where I should be. Though I wasn't told that there would be others sitting in on our meeting Commander." Said Naruto as he brushed off the slightly agitated ODST.

"I apologize about that, we can never be too careful and Lord Hood can't go anywhere without guards. Now we were told that you have engineered a prototype shield array, and have found a way to prolong a Smart AI's Lifespan. We also were told by Gabriella that you could give a spartan a run for their money in a fight. We are here to finalize a deal to acquire your services and your research, we have already been told of some of your requests and that one has already been met. Though I'm sorry to say that you cannot be assigned to the Promise as it is beyond repair." Said Markus with what Naruto would call the best poker face he had seen in a long time.

The room was silent for a while and caused some of the ODSTs to get kind of antsy. The silence was broken by Lord Hood "The Promise was too heavily damaged, the frame is beyond repair and the MAC cannon was melted to the structure of the ship, along with the slip-space drive and engines no longer functional, it would be too costly in both time and money to fully overhaul the ship. We are prepared to negotiate for any other requests that you could have." Said Lord Hood.

Naruto removed his helmet and placed it on the table that the two officers were sitting at and took a seat. Naruto looked directly at Lord hood and then Commander Markus, Naruto sighed and looked down and began thinking. "What is to become of Gabriella?"

"She will be assigned to a colony to teach as she has most of our history." Answered Lord Hood.

"What ships do you have in Mothball or drydock?" asked Naruto.

"Three light cruisers, Five destroyers, six Frigates, a fast attack battleship, and an old phoenix-class colony ship." Answered Markus.

"Hmmm…. Well the destroyers are out as they don't have the required power output to safely test my project, the cruisers have the power needed but fall apart too easily when hit by super-heated plasma, frigates are too lightly armored for my tastes, and finally the colony ship is not really structurally sound for all-out battle. So I guess I choose the Battleship. Could you tell me about it?"

Markus nodded "The Vindication-class light battleship was created in 2518, she is one thousand five hundred and eighty meters long, Three hundred and seventy-three meters wide, and three hundred and twenty- three meters tall, she originally didn't have a MAC as in those days we were only fighting insurgents, though a few years into the war with the covenant, the designs were amended to include a MAC cannon. It is equipped with two triple sixty-five Cal coilguns, six twin forty Cal coilguns, twelve twin Forty Cal autocannons, twenty-six thirty-five mm point defense guns, five Hyperion Nukes, Twenty pods of fusion missiles, and thirty-five pods of archer missiles. She has two and a half meters of titanium A2 battle armor, three fusion reactors, one heavy fusion drive and four bolt fusion drives. Finally she has a compliment of twenty-four F-41c Broadswords, Seven Longswords, Eight Pelicans, and roughly three hundred and twenty Marines." (Some of this I am bullshiting as I could not find some information on the ship)

"Why is she in mothball?"

"She sustained heavy damage and lost almost all of her crew in her last battle, and she has not been fully repaired yet."

"I would like for the ship to be repaired and for the Slip-space drive to be updated. I also would like to work on my project in a more remote location. I also would like to tinker with a slip-space drive to see if I can make slip-space travel more efficient for our ships, and see if I can speed up the time it takes to travel from one place to another." Naruto paused for a second as he looked around. The ODSTs were shocked at what he was asking from the Brass, and the two officers were slightly surprised, though he couldn't tell what the Spartans were thinking.

"Was that too much to ask for?"

"No, though why would you want to mess with a Slip-space drive? It is very dangerous to mess with and we haven't made any major progress in many years." Asked Markus

"Well to be blunt, your slip-space drive is primitive compared to the covenant's. I am sure I can make upgrades to your tech, but I need time."

"So your requests are as follows, you want to acquire the mothballed battleship and refit it for war, upgrade it with shields and a prototype Slip-space drive, you want to work on your projects in a more remote area, you also want to take up rank and be assigned to the ship when you are finished, and you also want your friends to join you if they so wish… anything else?"

"Not really."

"Well we can arrange for the ship to be moved to out of mothball and into a remote drydock on reach, there it will be refit with updated weapons and systems. You along with your friends will be moved to a lab close to the drydock. Due to the threat of spies and insurgents that would gladly destroy your work and kidnap your friends, the Eleventh Shock Battalion and Spartan 023 will be under your command with their main focus being to guard the laboratory." Said Markus.

"May I ask why you are dedicating a whole battalion to protect my work? I don't need that many people milling around, though the spartan is welcome as I need a good sparring partner-" Naruto paused and sighed. "Commander, you need to talk to some of your underlings about self-preservation." As soon as Naruto said that the door opened and in walked in what looked like to the others was another ODST in the exact same armor as Naruto holding a struggling Halsey like a kitten, though the group had to hold in their laughter as she wasn't in her normal lab coat, she looked like she was stuffed into a neon green jumpsuit.

"This is the second time I have caught her trying to collect samples from my friends. The next time I catch her trying, I will make good on my original promise." Said Naruto while looking directly into Halsey's eyes making her pale slightly.

"Catherine Halsey, we will have words after this." Said Markus.

Naruto feeling that he got his point across, motioned for the clone to release the troublesome woman, the clone dropped Halsey where she landed on her ass and that is where she stayed with her head down.

"Back to what we were discussing, we are dedicating a whole battalion to protect your work and you due to how much potential you have to change our position in this war. Though there are still renegades that still sabotage the UNSC whenever they can and I do not want any chance of that happening." said Lord Hood.

"I don't see the need of having that many people protect me but I will humor you sir." Said Naruto.

"Why do you think it is unnecessary?" asked Lord Hood.

Naruto motioned for his clone to remove his helmet, and when it did it caused everyone, including Halsey, to have a shocked look on their face as they stared straight at a carbon copy of Naruto. "This is why, I can make enough clones to protect whatever I needed." Said Naruto as he dismissed the clone which vanished in a puff of smoke.

Halsey was the first to come back to reality and began to fire off questions. "You have cloning tech? why didn't you say anything- "she was cut off by a look from Markus.

"I didn't say anything about it because you would be unable to replicate it as it is a technique from my home. Hmm…. Commander Markus... I have two last requests, could you reassign Halsey to my lab until I have completed my tasks? Also could you assign Doctor Weatherford to my lab as well to care for my companions and to eventually serve on my ship when it is ready?" asked Naruto with a mischievous smile on his face that made Halsey gulp.

Markus thought to himself, currently Halsey was working on upgrades to her armor but she was almost finished, and he needed her to learn not to act like she could get whatever she wanted by any means and not expect any consequences. Reassigning Doc Weatherford was an easy task as the Doctor was due to transfer elsewhere soon.

"Your terms are acceptable; your lab will be ready in two days. Daisy will be staying with you until she is assigned elsewhere, Same with Halsey but she will arrive in your lab in three months. LT Weatherford will be assigned to your ship and will help move your friends to your lab on the surface. The ship will be transferred to drydock in a week, there it will take about a year to refit the ship. Once completed you will receive your crew. The two squads of ODSTs will arrive with the slip-space drive and whatever parts you will require for your projects. Give us a list of what you need and you will have whatever you need by the end of next week. Upon the completion of said projects you will receive the rank of Captain in the UNSC Navy, and your friends will receive rank if they decide to join, though they won't have as high of a rank. Is there anything you would like to say before we leave this meeting?" Asked/stated Lord Hood.

"Other than the jumpsuit that Halsey has on won't come off for another eight hours, no I don't have anything else sir." Said Naruto with a grin. The group minus Halsey chuckled a bit at the young scientist's situation. With that said, the group minus Naruto, Daisy, and Halsey left the room. Once they were the only ones left Naruto turned his attention to Halsey.

"So this is going to be fun, looks like we'll be working together for a while." Said Naruto with a Cheshire cat grin, and his grin turned into a full-blown smile when he heard Halsey groan.

"Now, have fun Miss Halsey, I look forward to your arrival." Said Naruto as he got up, grabbed his helmet, and walked out of the room.

Daisy looked at Halsey and shook her head as the doc brought this on herself.

-Well at least Naruto showed some restraint and only changed what she was wearing, if he was in a bad mood he would have stripped her down to her undies and forced her to walk around the hospital twice before he came here, if he was in a really bad mood he would have made her march around buck naked.- The voice surprised Daisy and she placed a hand on her sidearm expecting trouble.

-Ah forgive me, old habits die hard, and technically I am dead and the habits still didn't go away. My name is Kakashi, Naruto's personal AI, I didn't mean to intrude but Naruto wanted to make sure that you had no trouble finding the room he was in. The room number is 309, do make yourself known or he may just react and throw you out of the room.- with that said Kakashi cut the link to Daisy's helmet and went back to monitoring the station's systems. Daisy didn't know what to think, though she left the conference room and made her way to Naruto's room. When Daisy approached the room, she stopped and thought about the AI's warning and decided to knock on the door before entering. What she saw was three women all in different states of health, though only the pink haired one was awake. Said girl looked at her when she walked through the door and looked slightly nervous though Daisy couldn't blame the girl as she too would be slightly unnerved by a tall stranger in armor walked through the door.

"So…Ms. Daisy we have already confirmed that your objective is to keep my research safe, though do tell me what your secondary objective is, and don't try to bullshit me, I know all too well how ONI operates." Said Naruto not even turning around to look at Daisy.

"I don't-" Daisy had to duck as a chair was flung towards her and barely missed her head.

"I told you not to bullshit me sweetheart, try again." Said Naruto now glaring at Daisy.

Daisy stayed silent for a few seconds and looked down at her feet pretending that they were more interesting. She finally looked up at Naruto and said "My secondary objective as directed by ONI is to gain genetic material from you by any means necessary." Daisy slightly blushed when she finished though it couldn't be seen behind her helmet.

"Well… that is something that I wouldn't have guessed ONI to order a spartan to do, maybe a spook but not a spartan. How old is she again Kakashi?"

-Well, she is chronologically thirty-two years old, though due to being in and out of the ice box so much she is around nineteen biologically. -

" At least they aren't throwing an underage girl at me, though it is still despicable. Commander Markus better keep a tighter leash on his people or I will personally see to it that they may lose their heads…. Never mind that, now Ms. Daisy I would rather you forget about that second order you have been given and you can report to your handler that I know of your secondary orders. Make sure that they are given my threat as I don't take kindly to people throwing girls at me, no matter how pretty they are." With that said Daisy's face turned a deeper shade of red "Though your report can wait, let me introduce you to Sakura as she is the only one awake right now." Said Naruto as he pointed for her to take a seat in the chair at the foot of the bed and she shook her head.

"I would break the chair sir, I will stand if that is ok with you." Said Daisy.

"very well, now on to introductions, Sakura this is spartan Daisy, Daisy this is Sakura Haruno."

"Eh, Naruto why is she in that baby shit green armor?"

With that said Naruto got the feeling that he would be highly entertained by the conversations that the two of them would have when Sakura could speak English.

"Well it is battle armor, as for the color… I really don't know." Said Naruto shrugging.

"What did she ask sir?"

"You can drop the 'sir' as I don't really care for it, and as for what she said… she asked about why your armor was that color, and I must say that it really isn't flattering."

Daisy sighed as she too didn't like the color, but her old armor was damaged and she hadn't gotten the color changed yet. "It's replacement armor. My armor was destroyed on my last mission."

"Kakashi, tell us about our new friend here."

-Let's see here…. S-023 Petty officer second class Daisy, Born 2511, Recruited in 2517 with the rest of the spartan IIs, she is six feet seven inches, Blonde with blue eyes, Her three sizes are- "Kakashi" -Fine… spoil sport. After her augmentations, she and a few other recruits escaped the facility and killed the flash clone that Halsey replaced her with, the last notable operation She took part in was the Harvest Campaign. She was critically wounded and was thought dead until recently she was found in a cryopod aboard a crippled frigate. She has spent the last few years as Lord Hood's bodyguard, and now she is assigned to a redacted assignment that I can reasonably guess is to protect you and your research. There is more on her file but it is too heavily encrypted for me to break currently. Is there anything else you want to know?-

"No, thank you Kakashi, now…. Why don't we introduce ourselves? My name is Naruto Uzumaki, former Shinobi of Konoha and one of the best stealth operatives in my village second only to my godfather, though I was the best heavy hitter they had as well, I enjoy ramen and I like the remaining friends I have left. I dislike the covenant, mainly the Brutes and elites. I also dislike the time it takes to cook ramen and ONI as they are some immoral bastards. My hobbies are gardening and tinkering with dangerous machines I guess, My dream now I guess is to return home after this war is done and I guess live out my days there." With is piece finished he gestured for Daisy to introduce herself.

"My name is Daisy, I don't remember my last name, and I guess I like my fellow Spartans and I guess I like reading, I dislike the covenant, and I really don't have any dreams or hobbies."

Naruto noticed at the end of her introduction that Sakura had dozed off and chuckled "Well now that that is finished why don't you get some rest as well we really have nothing to do for a while, maybe you can get out of your armor and get comfortable." With that said Naruto tucked Sakura in, leaned back in his chair and slipped into dreamworld, though all he had was nightmares.

-Two days later Surface of reach near Castle Base-

Naruto stood in his quarters inspecting everything inside, his workbench, Armor stand, Desk and terminal, Bed, and the holo projector in the corner of the room. Satisfied everything was fine he started to strip out of his armor and placed it on the workbench as he needed to repair a few subsystems that were damaged in his escape from his home. He eventually was left in only his boxers, and he looked at himself and traced a few scars that he received during the time the covenant occupied his home. Many couldn't be fully healed by Kurama as the fox was still regaining his strength from the battle against the ten tails. Though through this line of thought Naruto wondered what happened to the other tailed beasts as they were pure energy and couldn't be truly killed. He would have to ask Kurama whenever he wakes up though that wouldn't be anytime soon.

The door to his room opened and Sakura entered in a powered wheelchair.

"I suppose you had trouble knocking?" asked Naruto not even bothered that he was almost nude.

"The damn door opened before I could knock." Said Sakura.

"How goes your rehabilitation?"

"It's slow, I can walk but Weatherford advised me to stay in the chair until I build up my endurance again. They also measured me for the prosthetic arm which I should be getting in two weeks….. do you mind putting some clothes on?" said Sakura with a small blush on her face.

Naruto laughed a little and then slipped into a pair of black trousers and a white shirt. "Better?"

"Much, thanks. Now I came to tell you that Hinata is awake. She about had a panic attack and tossed Doctor Weatherford across the room. She stopped when she saw me of course. She wanted me to tell her what happened but I think it would be better if you tell her."

"Very well I will be there in a minute." Said Naruto as he slipped into a lab coat. "You want me to push you?"

"Please." And with that Naruto guided Sakura towards the room set aside for the girls until they recovered.

"Do you think anyone else survived on our planet?" asked Sakura.

"I'm not sure, it is possible yet not very probable. The covenant usually glass a planet after they destroy all the major population areas. I intend to go back home to see if there is anything left after I finish my primary project. By then you, Hinata, and the other girl should have recovered enough to come with me and help. But first you all need to learn the language that these people speak, and regain your strength." Said Naruto as he stopped in front of the door that led to the room the girls were staying in, and to his surprise he heard two voices coming from the other side.

Naruto knocked on the door and waited a few seconds before opening the door. Naruto guided Sakura in first and then entered the room himself. He saw both of the girls were awake and contemplated calling for Weatherford to check on them before he spoke with them. Nah, they'll be fine.

"It's good to see both of you awake. Before you two start asking me questions let me ask you this, what do you last remember?"
