Chapter 4. "What Hides In The Darkness."
She watched the feast from afar.
From where she stood, she could see the scene below her without a problem. Even though night had already fallen, the large fire lit by the center of the feast forced darkness away from that clearing.
It was obvious that the party had been going on for some hours already. Fauns played from their flutes as they danced around the fire in the company of dryads. By the perimeter of the clearing, long wooden tables had been set up, filled to the brim with meats, fruits, and desserts of all kinds. On a table apart from the others, large jars and barrels with wine and ale had been organized, a crowd of dwarves chatting merrily near it as they drank greedily from their glasses.
Happiness seemed to be emanating from that crowd, and she took that in with disgust. She could see the children running around as they played, sneaked food from the tables or even pushed each other in a playful manner. She could see badgers and centaurs deeply immersed in philosophical discussions. Tigers, cats and other talking animals were present as well, their graceful forms touring through the clearing slowly as their heads were held up proudly.
Her eyes drifted over to the clearing, noticing the beauty of that place. Once upon a time, its beauty would have been irresistible. All it would have taken was for her to lay her eyes on the colorful flowers living across the grass, now tinted golden by the flames, and she'd have been immediately summoned to join the feast.
All she could see were beautiful colours and clothes. The laughter was contagious, and it seemed to erupt even stronger as the guests increased their alcohol intake. Even the starry night above them was cause for reverent glee, the kind of happiness that forced one to be silent for there were no words that could describe the feeling in a satisfying manner.
Once upon a time, she would have joined that gathering gladly.
Now, all she could do was clench her fists in anger. She wanted to kill them all, she wanted to end their merriment but she knew it wasn't the time. Not yet.
She had to wait for her leader. Once she came back, nothing was going to stop them.
Against her will, she kept looking at the dryads dancing around the fire. Her sisters. For a second, it unnerved her how detached she felt from them but she figured it was bound to happen. After all, they had chosen to follow Aslan and the monarchs of Narnia. She hadn't. Now, all she could feel was resentment, for the manner in which they had left her on her own, choosing to feast and dance like careless maids instead of fighting for the wellbeing of the kingdom.
As that thought crossed her mind, her heart filled with pitch black hate, thundering with painful rage as she recognized the ones at fault.
King Peter was chatting with a dark centaur and a ginger dwarf. His hands were cradling a glass of beer and his laugh was booming as he threw his head backwards with amusement. His clothes were navy blue with a golden trim, and the golden crown on his head glimmered slightly as it reflected the golden light from the flames.
High King Caspian and Queen Suspian were dancing, slightly apart from the rest of the crowd. Her hands were resting on his heart while his arms were snuggly wrapped around her waist. They were waltzing slowly as their gazes remained on each other's eyes. Their golden crowns rested on their heads and her red dress brushed against his dark trousers every time they twirled.
With a sneer, she retreated from her hiding spot behind a tree and into the darkness of the forest.
She would free Narnia from the heathens Kings and Queen.
High King Caspian.
King Peter.
Queen Susan.
The faithful followers of Aslan.
They had no idea what was coming for them.
By the clearing and in Caspian's arms, Susan suddenly felt a pair of eyes on her. She looked at the edge of the clearing, trying to decipher any presence through the hazing darkness that was the forest.
"Su?" Caspian asked softly. "My love, is everything okay?"
Susan looked at Caspian, ignoring the trepidation climbing up her throat. "Of course I am, my love."
Caspian smiled and brought her closer. Susan rested her head against his chest but as they twirled yet another time, she couldn't help but shiver in his arms as she glanced at the edge of the clearing again.
For a second, she'd almost felt cold.
