Nine Simple Words: An Owl House Story

A Fanfic by ZebraFinch99

Foreword

Before I begin, I figure I might as well give a little context to this fanfic. I'm a huge fan of The Owl House. It's one of my favorite show's right now, and Lumity is one of the best ships ever. I was thinking about how wonderful Lumity is, when this question occurred to me: what if Amity was bold enough to give Luz the note during the Grom episode? It started as a small idea, but then the ideas just kept coming. Next thing I knew, it had snowballed into a legitimate story. Just throw in a comedic B-plot, and you got yourself an episode. I realized that this was a story I had to write. So I did.

Now for a couple details I should mention. First, the part about Amity being chosen as Grom queen doesn't occur in this story. That was an intentional choice. As the ideas kept coming, I realized this whole story would not work at all with the whole Grom Queen story. So Amity isn't Grom Queen in this fanfic. My fanfic, my rules! Additionally, as I was thinking of chapter titles, it occurred to me that a Hooty quote ("Special Delivery: PAIN!") was the perfect title for one of the chapters, and I decided to title each chapter with a Hooty quote, because he is one of my all-time favorite characters. I'm not just talking Owl House characters here, he is one of my favorite characters in any medium. I also tried to think of one to use as a title for the story itself, but nothing was working, so I stopped trying. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized just how central the note was to the story. In a way, the story is more about the note than about Lumity. I then counted how many words were on the note in the show, and that's how I came up with the title. (Also, for the record, this was published between seasons 2A and 2B, so I take NO responsibility for any potential future continuity errors!) With all that said, please enjoy "Nine Simple Words: An Owl House Story".

Chapter 1: Is the Room Spinning, or is It Just Me? Ah. Just a Little House Humor!

Amity Blight was pacing in her room late one night, practicing what she was going to say the next day. "Greetings, dearest Luz! Your presence is requested at the Ball of Grometheus! Please join me for a night of —no, too formal." She tried a different, more nonchalant approach. "Sup, Luz. You're lookin' swell. I've been thinkin', and it would be really cool if you went to Grom with—nope, not formal enough." She decided to try just saying what was on her mind. She took a deep breath and said, "Hey, Luz. So, we've been hanging out a lot, lately. And we've gotten to know each other pretty well. I've been thinking, and…I think…I might…like…you? And I mean like, "like you", like you. So…I was wondering…I know this is crazy…but, umm…I was wondering if you would…I dunno…maybe want to…go to Grom with…me? Uuuggghh, why is this so hard!"

Suddenly, she heard a voice from the pendent around her neck. "Earth to Mittens, darling! I know your homework's done by now, so lights out! You must be well rested for school. Can't go around making another A-, now can we?"

"Yes, Mom." She turned out the lights and went to bed. But she didn't sleep well that night. She tossed and turned all night, anxious about how she would ask Luz to Grom. The next morning, she was still trying to figure out what to say, but then a new idea occurred to her. What if she didn't have to SAY anything at all? Thinking fast, she grabbed a sheet of pink stationary and wrote something down. She then looked at it. It was short, simple, straight to the point. Nine simple words, words that would change her life forever, though she didn't know it yet. It was perfect.

She then looked at it again and considered what she was about to do. Was this really a good idea? She hesitated. "Snap out of it Amity!", she said to herself. "You're not thinking straight!" But, against her better judgement, she folded the note into quarters, placed it in her pocket, and left for school.

Luz Noceda was on her way back from lunch when she stopped at her locker to pick up her books for class. Much to her surprise, someone had left a note on the front of her locker. She picked it up and read it. "Meet me after school by the Grudgby court. I want to talk to you. Privately. Amity". Luz looked at it and wondered what was going on. What did she want to talk about? Was Amity mad at her for some reason? Or maybe she wanted to discuss the latest Good Witch Azura book. Either way, it had to be something important, so she decided it would be best to check it out.

After school, Luz walked over to the Grudgby court to see what was up. Amity sat on one of the bleachers, nervously fiddling with a pink piece of paper in her hand. She was saying something to herself, as if she was rehearsing a speech. Luz approached her and said, "Hey, Amity!"

Amity went silent as her face immediately went red. Luz had noticed her face going red when she was around her, but she had no idea why that was happening. At least not yet anyway. Amity, deep in panic mode, turned around, and replied, "AAAHHHH! Oh, hi, Luz! Haha, what are YOU doing here!?"

"Uhhh…you left a note on my locker asking me to meet you here?"

"Haha, oh, uh, yeah, that's right. I did do that. That's me. Amity Blight. Just going around, leaving notes on people's lockers asking to meet with me. Hahaha." She paused awkwardly, like the gay disaster she was. "I've been talking for too long."

"It's okay. What do you wanna talk about?"

"Oh, right! Hey, uh, why don't we sit down?"

After they both sat down, Amity took a deep breath and nervously said, "So…uh, I've been hanging out with you a lot lately. And it's been great getting to know you these past few...how long has it been? I wanna say...months? Wow. Has it really been that long? Whoa."

Luz replied, "Yeah. It's pretty crazy that I've been here that long. I swear, it still feels like I got here just yesterday. Weird, right?"

Amity interjected, "Yup, pretty weird!"

Luz eyed her suspiciously. "Okay, what's going on Amity? You're acting pretty strange. Why did you want to meet with me?"

Amity blushed. "Oh, right. Haha, I'm getting off track, aren't I? Haha. Yes. Right. So…ahem, the reason I asked to meet with was because…see…uh…" She hesitated. "Because…I wanted to ask...this is crazy but...ahem, see I think I might...and I was wondering...uh,..would you maybe wanna...um..."

Suddenly, before she even knew what she was doing, she thrust the note forward as she became thoroughly flustered. "Here! Note! Read!"

Luz was now even more confused, but she picked up the note. She unfolded it and read what it said.

She gave a little gasp. On the note was written nine simple words that would change her life forever.

Suddenly, it all made sense. Why Amity had been acting so weird lately. All the blushing, why she had been so nervous around her lately, all the times it felt like she wanted to get closer but was also kind of avoiding her at the same time. She thought back to the time she caught Amity saying, "So we go to the same school now. THAT doesn't change anything!" It all made sense.

Luz blushed as so many thoughts came into her head. On the one hand, she was excited at this prospect, even flattered. Someone else having a crush on her for once? This never happened in the human world. But on the other hand…something didn't feel right. Obviously, Amity had feelings for her, but…did she feel the same way about her? She wasn't sure. If not, would it even be fair for either of them if she said yes? Or was she just…required to say yes? She wasn't sure about that either. She was thoroughly nonplussed. But the pressure was on, and she knew she had to say something.

Treading on eggshells, she said, "Oh, wow Amity. This is…really nice. And I really appreciate you asking. But…I don't know if I…look, you're a wonderful person, and a great friend. But I didn't know you felt this way about…and I'm not sure if I…. Look, what I'm trying to say is—" She sighed. "I think I need some time to think."

Amity didn't know what to say. She was hoping for a yes, even prepared for a no, but she did not anticipate this. I think I need some time to think? What did that even mean? Whatever it meant, it couldn't be good. She awkwardly stood up and said, "Oh…um…okay. See you later, I guess…" She hid her face in embarrassment as she walked away, leaving the note behind. Once she was out of earshot, she started muttering to herself, "Why did I do that, why'd I do that, why'd I do that?"

Luz looked back at the note in her hand. She looked at where Amity had been seated mere moments ago. She leaned back in the bleachers, staring up at the sky. She had a lot to think about.
