Chapter-2

BPOV

"Edward Cullen likes you."

"God Rosalie, not this again!"

Sprawled out on my bed as if it was her own Rose grinned at me like the gossip hungry fiend she was.

"I'm serious!" She twisted her hair around a manicured finger waiting for my reaction.

"Why do you even care?"

"I'm bored. I need something to do and setting you up seems like the perfect activity!"

"That is so lame."

"Fine. Tell me you're not interested and I'll back off." Feeling a traitorous blush heat my face I ducked my head hiding behind my hair. "See that's what I thought."

"Ugh, don't be so damn smug. You know you told me the same thing in seventh grade and in ninth. You got me all excited and then what? Nothing happened!"

"Because it was true then and it's true now! You know how shy he is. Maybe he just needs a little push."

"Whatever. We tried that last time. All we succeeded in doing was making me look like a psychopath."

"Jesus Bella it's not my fault you can't flirt to save your life. Besides, Emmett is the one who told me this time. We can get intel from him. He's the secret weapon we were missing before!"

"You know Edward's my lab partner in bio." I grinned, not able to help myself.

"Yes! We can work with that! Why don't you fail a couple tests then ask him to tutor you!"

"I'm not failing tests on purpose Rose! That's just stupid plus falling behind in that class would be catastrophic."

The sound of Charlie's cruiser in the driveway cut our conversation short. No chance in hell I wanted him overhearing us discussing boys. I was pretty sure he still saw me as a six year old with pigtails. He would have a heart attack if he knew what I fantasized about doing to Edward Cullen.

"We're not done with this conversation. I'm going to think it over and get back to you. In the meantime can you please just try to dress to impress and keep using the mascara and lip gloss I bought you. Guys are visual creatures."

Gesturing to the clothes and makeup I'd worn to school I rolled my eyes. Obviously I already took her advice and stepped out of my comfort zone.

As much as I hated to admit it Rosalie had a point. She also had a boyfriend, something I seriously lacked experience with. Until befriending Rose I'd never been good at being girly. Living with a single father left a lot to be desired in the makeup and push up bra category. Not to mention being an A cup until sophomore year. After Rosalie introduced me to the miracle of Victoria's Secret my ability to attract male attention improved. Even Edward reacted to the tight fitted tank I wore the first day of school.

The crush I harbored on Edward started when we were ten years old. I'd just moved back from living with my mom in Phoenix. It was March, midway through the school year, when I was thrown into class with a ton of kids who'd known each other since pre school. I was the odd man out and to make matters worse I was a shy kid. The first day of school was miserable. Jessica Stanley asked me why I was so pale in P.E., announcing that people from Arizona should be tan. Tyler Crowley pulled my hair twice at lunch. Mike Newton told our whole class that I was his girlfriend and he was going to kiss me at recess. Terrified, I asked our teacher if I could stay inside instead of going out to play with the other kids. Taking pity on me she said yes and sent me to the library with instructions to give a pass to the librarian. When I arrived in the library I waited at the check out desk for the librarian who never showed.

"She's at lunch," a gentle voice said from the back of the room. Curious, I searched until I found a skinny boy with glasses sitting at one of the back tables. He was reading a book about a boy named Henry. It was written by my favorite author.

"I haven't read that book, is it good?" Drawn to him I sat down interrupting his reading. He stared at me for a minute and I started to fidget. Maybe he didn't want to talk to me.

"Um, yah. There are a bunch in this series. I like this one the best though. Do you, um, want to read it when I'm done?"

"Sure." We sat in silence for a minute as he pretended to read. His eyes kept darting to me and then back to his book.

"So why are you in here during recess?" I asked.

"Oh, um, I don't like sports very much… well sports other than swimming," he mumbled.

"Swimming is fun. I did swim team last summer in Phoenix. That's where I'm from."

"Really?" The smile that lit his face was beautiful. "What's your favorite stroke?"

"I like butterfly," I said. He pursed his lips in thought.

"That's the hardest stroke." He seemed impressed.

"What about you?"

"I'm the fastest at freestyle so I guess that's my favorite," he answered with a shrug. A bell rang signaling the end of recess.

As we walked back toward our classrooms we asked each other about our favorite things. His favorite color was green, I told him mine was too. Before that day it was purple but his eyes were green and I really liked his eyes. His favorite food was spaghetti, mine was grilled cheese. Our newfound friendship excited me and my first day no longer felt so bleak… until we ran into Mike and Tyler outside my classroom.

"Hey Edward! Is Bella your girlfriend now?" Mike spat.

"Wh-what? N-no!" Edward stammered. My heart sank at his adamant denial.

"Jeez Bella, do you like Cullen or something?" Tyler asked.

"I… we were just reading." I didn't know how to handle the accusation. Edward was the only nice person I'd met so far. Did that mean I liked him?

"I don't like her, okay? She just came up to me while I was reading. Who cares Mike!" Edward stomped away angry and retreated into his classroom. On the verge of tears, I followed behind Mike and Tyler, glancing back toward the closed door Edward disappeared behind.

The next day I went out to recess with the other kids but when I returned the book Edward promised me was sitting inside my backpack. I was never able to get him to open up around me again. Freshman year I did everything Rose and I could think of to get him to ask me to the homecoming dance. From wearing skirts, to giggling and flirting, to sitting next to him at a pep rally. Nothing worked. Tyler ended up asking me two days before the dance after Lauren Mallory dumped him to go with a Junior. I spent the entire dance trying to keep Tyler's hands off my ass.

There had to be a way to get through to Edward and maybe Rose was right… was Emmett the key?

A/N: I don't know... does Emmett have it in him to help, or are these two going to have to figure it out on their own? Who else just wants to give poor little Edward a hug?

Hoping to get the next chapter up at the end of the week, until then please let me know what you think!
