Chapter- 3
EPOV
Swimming at six am sucked but there was only one indoor pool in Forks, practice time was limited. The Forks Community Center was surprisingly well maintained for such a small town. It housed an olympic sized pool surrounded by stadium seating and a brand new scoreboard that took up half of the far wall. My father may have had something to do with that addition. Dr. Cullen was a generous guy when it came to his kids. He was also thrilled that his second son ended up excelling in something athletic.
The cold water served as a good substitute to the caffeine I didn't drink until after practice. Pounding out laps after chugging coffee was never a good idea. I eased into my warm ups picking up the pace with each lap.
"Alright guys, two hundred free and then we're focusing on butterfly. I need strokes clean before the Port Angeles meet!" Coach Clap yelled over the sound of splashing water.
Ready to get my real workout in I pushed off the wall, streamlining until I hit the first line of flags then worked until my muscles burned. I finished my two hundred free a good five seconds before everyone else. There was a reason I was captain.
"Cullen, I want you to swim a hundred fly. Everyone else you're going to watch his form. Pay attention to his pull, I need you all to focus on swimming forward, no more of this up and down I'm seeing. Go!"
Gliding through the water I focused on pulling my arms and keeping my chin low. My turn slowed me a split second more than I liked. I made a mental note to come in over the weekend to fix the skill then pushed harder as I returned to the first side of the pool, hitting the wall with both hands before resurfacing to catch my breath.
"Exactly! People, that is what you should all look like. Two Hundred, Go!" I grinned at coach Clap's praise before turning and jetting out into the water again.
WIGT
"How does Esme keep them fed?" Rosalie scoffed, watching Emmett and I scarf down egg and cheese breakfast sandwiches.
"That's why I'm so small, they can't afford to feed me because of these two," Alice laughed at her own joke.
"I think you're adorable small," Jasper whispered into her neck.
"Oh God that's disgusting," I groaned.
"Edward, you just don't understand new relationships." Rosalie rolled her eyes. "Maybe if you had a girlfriend.."
"And I'm done with this conversation, bye!" I grabbed my bag and coffee leaving my siblings with their significant others in the parking lot to do God knows what. It was bad enough when I was just dealing with Emmett and Rosalie but the new development that was Jasper and Alice pushed me over the edge.
Rosalie had been bothering me for forever to find a girlfriend. She didn't understand the predicament I was in. I'd thought about asking other girls out before. One time I even asked Tanya Denali to a dance but she shot me down with the excuse that she was already going with a Senior. The real issue was I didn't want to be the boyfriend hung up on another girl. It didn't seem fair. I'd resigned myself to the idea that I would get over Bella when we went to college and I didn't have to see her every day. Once I moved on it would be easier to date other girls.
"Edward, you're just the guy I wanted to see!" I stifled a groan as Eric Yorkie jumped in front of me. The kid was like a ninja. You never saw him coming until he was standing right in front of your face.
"Hey Eric, what's up?" I kept walking and chugging my rapidly cooling coffee. I was going to need the boost to get me through whatever the hell this conversation was.
"So I'm recruiting people for the Homecoming committee and we need some more guys. I thought if we can get you on board, being captain of the swim team, it might encourage some other athletes to get involved… what do you think?"
"I think you're overestimating my influence," I grumbled.
"Come on man, just think about it okay?"
"Dude. No. I'm not…" And he was gone. How the hell did he do that?
There was no way in hell I was participating in Homecoming committee. I didn't even know what they did. Probably painted posters for the spirit week pep rally and decorated the gym for the dance. Nope. Definitely not my thing.
WIGT
After inhaling a hamburger and fries at lunch I made my escape from the love fest that had become my lunch table with the excuse of needing to hunt down Yorkie. I found his girlfriend Angela but even she had no idea where he'd slipped off to. I wandered the halls checking the yearbook room and the AV room to no avail. Resigned, I stalked to Bio figuring he'd eventually show up again... without warning.
A sub sat behind Mr. Banner's desk and a projector stood in the middle of the room. Awesome, movie day. I slid onto my seat excited about the prospect of having a full period without real work… even if I would spend the time being tortured by Bella's presence. It was a torture I was more than willing to endure.
"Oh thank God!" She slid in next to me plopping her binder on the desk. A hoard of papers stuck out from the sides.
"Hi?" I smiled at her dishevelment.
"Sorry, it's been a… day." She used her hand to brush hair out of her face.
"Oh, I'm sorry. What happened?" I asked hoping I wasn't being nosy.
"I had a meeting with my counselor this morning…" She paused.
"Are your grades not good?"
"No that's not it, they're fine. I'm apparently lacking in extracurricular activities. According to her, colleges look at that stuff."
"That's what I've heard too." Swim was a big enough commitment that I'd never had to worry about adding anything else to my schedule but I knew colleges wanted to see something listed on your application.
"Anyway she got me to join Beta club, which I don't mind… but I was hoping I could just do all my volunteer hours at the library or something. They have that program where you can go in and read to little kids, it sounded cool."
"So what's wrong with doing that?"
"Apparently you have to do part of your hours by helping out the school."
"Can you do something in our library?"
"I could have… if Eric Yorkie hadn't tracked me down."
"You too?" I laughed.
"He's insanely stealth, like he just appears out of thin air! Anyway he suckered me into helping with Homecoming." Wait. Bella was on the Homecoming committee? That changed things, a lot.
"He cornered me about the committee too."
"Really? Um, are you going to do it? I mean, it would be cool to have a friend to work with. Maybe we could take on some of the tasks together. Like partners or something?" Bella looked at me from under her lashes, her big eyes begging me to say yes.
"Yes."
"Seriously! Okay now I'm excited. Edward, you just fixed my entire day! Thank you!"
Bella jumped off her stool and threw her arms around my neck. Shocked, it took me a second to realize what was happening. I wrapped my arms around her and pulled her toward me the slightest bit. Her body was a perfect fit against mine.
The classroom lights switched off forcing me to awkwardly let go of her. She sent me a shy smile and tucked a piece of hair behind her ear. Bio was officially the best class I'd ever taken.
A/N: Hmmm, looks like a major opportunity for these two to figure things out... thanks ninja Eric!
So what homecoming theme would you pick for Forks High?
