Chapter- 6
BPOV
How did Rosalie get things with Edward so wrong? And why the hell did I listen to her again? I ran to the front door after mumbling a quick "thanks" and jumping out of Edward's car. The faster I could get away the better. Inside I rushed to my room slamming the door for good measure. Charlie was working a weekend shift leaving me on my own to wallow in self pity.
What was it about me that Edward found so unappealing? I didn't understand. I'd caught him sneaking glances at my chest more than once over the course of the afternoon, I'd been sure he was interested. Then I make a move, trying to be sexy, and I run him off? What the hell? Maybe I was coming on too strong? Pissed off I grabbed my phone and called Rose.
"How'd it go, tell me everything!"
"I hate you," I cried.
"Wait what? Bella, are you crying? Mother fucker! What did that asshole do?"
"I made such a fool of myself Rose!"
"Start from the beginning."
I sniffled through my recap for Rosalie. Being the amazing best friend she was, she called Edward names at all the right places.
"So he was offended by seeing your bra but kept looking down your shirt? What the hell did he think he was going to see?"
"I've been trying to figure that out too. Maybe my bra was showing the whole time? But I checked my top when we were in the kitchen to make sure nothing scandalous was happening. It doesn't make sense!"
"Bella… tell me in detail what happened when you tried to get all sexy like on the bed."
"So we were lying down facing the computer and I rolled to my side to see him better. I tried to do that hair flip thing that you taught me and like… posed I guess?"
"What do you mean 'posed?'"
"Like the way the Victoria Secret Angels do it. One leg lying on the other, sort of bent, you know... the way it makes you look super curvy."
"Got it, then what did he do?"
"Well… he kind of just froze. Like he was all tense but his eyes moved all the way down my body. Then he threw his head face down on his arms and groaned."
"Bella... do you think you're maybe reading him wrong?" I paused thinking over Rosalie's question.
"The next thing he said was 'Bella I can see your bra' and he kind of freaked out."
"God he's a mornon."
"Rose, it's fine. He's got his type and I'm not it. I was probably coming on too strong."
"And you are also a mornon. You two are meant for each other."
"What? How am I a moron?"
"Bella, I think he was trying not to make a move. I'm calling Emmett. I need to get to the bottom of this."
"No Rosalie! Wait!"
"I'll call you back."
Damnit, the last person Rose needed to involve was Emmett! Irritated and still suffering the sting of rejection I changed into a hoodie and yoga pants. I left my phone in my room and wandered down to the kitchen in search of my tub of double fudge ice cream stashed in the back of the freezer. Plopping on the couch with my frozen goodness I clicked on the TV searching until I found Pride and Prejudice on a movie channel. I curled up and stayed far away from anything electronic Rosalie could use as communication.
WIGT
"I have been trying to call you all weekend," Rose said in greeting when I exited my truck Monday morning.
"My charger broke and I couldn't get a new one until last night."
"Bullshit."
I gave her an innocent smile then pushed past her toward the building.
"I talked to Emmett." She hurried to keep up with me.
"God Rose, I don't care, okay? I'm humiliated enough! I don't need to rehash what happened!"
"Edward thought Emmett was trying to get you to be his pity date."
"His pity date?" She smiled victoriously when I slowed my stride.
"Edward doesn't see himself the way you do. He thinks he's still the scrawny nerdy kid everyone picked on."
"I liked that kid," I defended.
"Right, but Edward A, doesn't know that and B, works hard not to be that kid anymore. He's got you up on a pedestal and he doesn't believe you would ever be interested in him."
"Seriously? I nearly threw myself at him! Does he think I do that with every guy I work with?"
"Probably," she said with a shrug. "He's trying to convince himself not to make a move with you, he's positive he's going to get rejected. That's what Emmett said anyway."
"Oh my god he's a moron!" I threw my hands up.
"We might have to be a little more obvious…" she tapped her finger on her cheek plotting our next step.
"I mean I could lock him in the bio lab and strip down naked but I think he'd write it off as me just being too warm."
"He's kind of high strung. He's eventually going to snap. Wait, I've got an idea. Sit with us at lunch."
"And watch you make out with Emmett?"
"I promise I'll be on my best behavior and I'll ask Alice and Jasper to keep the PDA to a minimum. Edward always eats with us before we scare him away. If you're there I'm sure he'll stay and we can start working on fixing all your stupidity."
"Hey!"
"Gotta go I'm gonna be late!" She blew me a kiss and ran off down the hall toward her first class.
I grumbled to myself but decided I would give lunch a shot. What else was I supposed to do?
EPOV
"What the hell did you tell Rosalie!" I slammed through Emmett's door without knocking.
Dropping off Bella sucked. I spent the entire ride feeling guilty and humiliated. I was pissed at Emmett but I was also angry with myself for screwing up what was a perfect opportunity with Bella. Her lying on my bed, flipping her hair and looking like a real live fantasy played on a constant loop in my head. How the hell had I not jumped at my chance, what was wrong with me?
"Whoa dude chill! Where's your girlfriend?" He looked behind me like he was expecting Bella to pop out and yell "surprise."
"She's not my girlfriend, and I took her home because of you!"
"Because of me? What the hell did I do?"
"You told Rosalie I needed a fucking pity date, didn't you? I am not that pathetic asshole!" I picked up his foam basketball and rocketed it toward the back stop on his door. It bounced pathetically and rolled off the rim of the basket.
"Alright so… that would be hilarious, and I wish I had asked Rosalie to do that but dude no. What the hell happened?"
"Emmett do you swear you weren't trying to get Rosalie to set me up?"
"Cross my heart. Plus if I did that I'd never involve Bella, you've been in love with her since fifth grade! I mean I like messing with you baby bro but I don't want to annihilate your soul!"
"Then what the hell just happened?"
"I don't know because you won't tell me!"
By the time I finished my recap to Emmett he was on the floor in hysterics. I glared at him but waited, as much as I hated to admit it I really needed his opinion.
"Alright, alright. Let me do a quick recap. So you've got your dream girl over to 'work on a project.' She lies down across your bed… oh wait and she's also dressed super hot… then you hide and tell her you can see her bra? This is the funniest thing I've heard in forever!" His guffaws started all over again.
"God damnit. I knew I shouldn't have come to you." I left Emmett to enjoy my misery.
In my room I flopped on my couch and clicked on the TV. Some stupid old time chick flick was on but I didn't care. I wasn't watching it anyway, instead I was sending a death glare towards my bed. The comforter was still rumpled from Bella and I. Fucking hell, I had Bella Swan on my bed and not only did I talk myself out of making a move, I ran her off! Leaning forward I dropped my head in my hands and stared at the floor. I was never going to figure out women. I was going to die at one hundred and nine, still a virgin.
"Edward." My father's voice was accompanied by a kock on my door.
"Hi," I grumbled.
"What are you watching?" He asked, strolling into the room.
"Um…" I looked back at the TV, "a movie?"
"Hmm," he eyed the TV, obviously questioning my choice in cinema. "Your mother told me you had a friend over."
"Oh, yah, They left." I fidgeted with the remote. I didn't want to rehash the horrific events.
"She said you're on the Homecoming committee? You're in charge of the refreshments? I didn't know that was something that interested you."
I shrugged. "I kind of got roped into it by my friend Eric."
"Oh. Is that the friend that was here today?"
"No..."
"Look Edward, I've been wanting to talk to you for a couple of weeks." He paused contemplating something. "I want you to know that I love you and if there's ever anything you need to tell me or you just want to talk I'm here to listen."
"Okay…"
"So, is there anything you want to talk about?"
Maybe I could talk to my dad, I mean he had to ask a girl out at one point right? Otherwise how would he have gotten my mom?
"Can I ask you a question?" I ran my hand through my hair needing something to do with my nervous energy. "How did you ask out mom?"
"Uh, well… First off let me preface this by saying women are very different from men." I nodded. "I'd had a crush on your mother for months but I was sure she was out of my league so I settled for being her friend. I thought that if I got to know her well enough she would eventually see me as more."
"Well that obviously worked." I blew out a breath. Maybe that was the game plan I needed to follow.
"Not so fast, yes it eventually worked but there was a lot of in between before the happily ever after. See I wasn't the only guy interested in your mother."
"Eiw."
"Do you want to hear the story or not?" I waved my hand for him to continue. "Another friend of hers had the balls I didn't have and while I was trying to play the long game he jumped ahead and asked her out."
"What did she say?"
"She said yes. Obviously I was a furious jealous mess but it spurred me into action. The night before her date I showed up at her doorstep with flowers. She let me in and listened to my speech detailing why I was a better man for her to choose. After I'd layed my heart on the line she started laughing."
"What? Holy shit that's brutal!" I had no idea my mom could be so cold.
"That's what I thought. I was mortified so I took my flowers and went for the door. She ran after and stopped me, explaining that she never intended to go out with the other guy. As a matter of a fact he was one of her friend's brothers and was already married. He was helping her out by pretending to be another suitor."
"What!"
"She'd apparently been waiting for me to ask her out from the first day we met and couldn't figure out what was wrong with me. Faking another date was her last ditch effort to get me to make a move."
"Wow. That's… brilliant," I laughed.
"I learned a valuable lesson that day. If your heart is set on someone you better listen to it, you never know when they'll be off the market. It's like the saying 'you miss a hundred percent of the shots you don't take.' If your heart is going to be broken anyway why not take a shot and see what happens."
I mulled over my father's advice, it made sense.
"Thanks Dad, that was actually really helpful."
"Good I'm glad." He sighed and stood. "Remember what I said before Edward. I really am here to listen to anything you need to tell me, without judgement."
"Yah I understand."
"So… is there anything you do want to tell me?"
Confused as to what information he was trying to fish out of me I racked my brain until Emmett barged through my doorway like the oafish lumberjack he was.
"Dude Bella was totally trying to seduce you dumbass!"
"What! How the hell do you know that?"
"Rosalie! Dude Rose is so pissed at you. She helped Bella plan this all out like even that shirt she was wearing. You were supposed to see her bra!"
"Whoa what the hell are you two talking about?" My father's eyes darted between us.
"Bella was here earlier and was like on the bed with him trying to get this doofus to make a move. He freaking hid from her!" Emmet pointed at me.
"I didn't hide! I was trying to be a gentleman!"
"Bella Swan? As in Chief Swan's daughter?"
"Yes," Emmett and I answered together.
"Well this is a very different conversation than I came up here to have with you Edward."
"Wait, what conversation did you come up here to have?" I asked. My father paused glaring at Emmett.
"Your brother made some remarks that led me to believe…" Emmet let out a loud laugh slapping his knee.
"Oh holy crap! I totally forgot about the Jason Mamoa shit!"
"God dammit you asshole!" I stood up and charged forward but he made it through the door slamming it before I could reach him.
"Edward. Sit down." I froze with my hand on the doorknob. My father's tone left no room for argument. "We probably need to readdress safe sex and birth control."
God damn Emmett and his big mouth.
