CHAPTER ONE
I've never been good at anything in my life. Well, nothing except being a fangirl. You see, instead of studying like the rest of my high school friends, I spent so many hours keeping up with news about my bias group. I bought multiple versions of their album for hi-touch events, collected merchandise, paid my Fanclub dues, and participated in every lottery for concert tickets.
My name is Takahashi Miu, a failed university candidate and a convenience store employee. This is the story about the incident that completely changed my fangirl life.
"Micchan, you're going to be late again!"
"I know, I know, onee-chan," I said, rolling my eyes as I slipped on my shoes in the genkan, ready to go out the door.
I was on my way out the door to go to work at the convenience store just a short walk from the apartment I shared with my older sister, Chiaki. She was right that I was going to be a little late, but there was no way I was going to miss the performance of my number one idol, Ohtori Eiji on Music Station. The group HEAVENS were the time sink of my life and I've heard all of the insults thrown at me on how I've thrown away my life in loving them.
That's OK. I had no regrets because all of the judgment I received was wiped away with every glance I took at Eiji's sweet face or anytime I heard his angelic voice. I looked down at my bag and smiled, looking at the keychain with Eiji's picture hanging from one of the straps.
He was what kept me going every day and I couldn't let him down.
"I'm out!" I yelled.
"Take care!" Chiaki's voice followed me out the door.
And then I was off, rushing the 3 blocks to the Lawson convenience store I happened to be working at. It was supposed to be a temporary thing as I studied to retake my entrance exams, but honestly, I feel like I've entered a rut. Either way, I finally made it, officially 15 minutes late.
"Takahashi, you're late," my manager scolded as I entered the backroom to set my stuff down. I pulled my work shirt out of the HEAVENS tote bag I always used and shrugged it over my shoulders and then swiftly bowed.
"I'm so sorry."
"Restock the magazines."
"Yes, sir!"
I was back out under the bright florescent lights, making a beeline towards the magazine rack. However, what I saw next stopped me dead in my tracks. At the register was none other than Ohtori Eiichi. There was no mistaking it, I'd seen that face almost as much as I'd seen my own in the mirror. Thus I stood, starstruck, frozen in place, my eyes wide beacons.
I barely registered what was happening around me, but I could tell Eiichi was in distress as he spoke to the other man with him in clipped sharp tones. It wasn't until his eyes landed on me, his eyebrows furrowed that I gasped and took a step back, nearly bumping into a display of potato chips and gacha prizes.
"You girl, what's your name?" Eiichi raised his finger and pointed right at me.
"M, me?" I stuttered incredulously.
"Yes, you're the only one there, right," he said, agitation laced in his voice.
"Ta,takahashi Miu!" I replied.
"Well, Takahashi Miu, you are my new manager."
"WHAT!?" I squeaked and so did the man beside Eiichi at the same exact time.
"Calm down, Eiichi. Don't be so rash," the man went on.
Eiichi interrupted the man before he could finish his train of thought, "Being a manager is such a simple job, anyone can do it! And to prove my point, Takahashi will be my new manager. Motomura, you're fired."
And as if to hammer in his words, Eiichi began to walk to the door.
"Come, Takahashi."
What was I supposed to do? Ohtori Eiichi of HEAVENS was demanding for me to follow him, but yet my feet were rooted to the spot. My mind was a jumble of thoughts. Magazine racks, entrance exams, Ohtori Eiichi, Eiji, HEAVENS; it was so loud and then it went silent as the snap of Eiichi's fingers broke through the reverie. He signaled for me to follow.
So I did.
It was insane. I was inside of a black car with Ohtori Eiichi and the manager from inside of the convenience store. The man, Motomura was attempting to speak reason to him.
"You really don't mean it. You're stressed. You're tired. The concert is tomorrow but you mustn't speak so rashly."
"Weren't you the one saying you're being spread thin between the 7 of us and our solo activities?" Eiichi asked, looking bored. "You've done one too many careless mistakes. I've relieved you of your responsibility, Takahashi-san can take up the mantel."
"As if this girl could do a better job? She doesn't even know the industry," Motomura persisted.
"Your job isn't rocket science, Motomura," replied Eiichi.
"Ah, what exactly is-" I attempted to ask but the men continued to speak over me.
"Your father will speak reason to you."
"My father will allow me to choose my own manager."
I tried again, "I don't know anything about managing music."
"See, she knows nothing."
"And neither do you," was Eiichi's curt reply.
The car stopped, pulling up in front of the Raging Entertainment building. It was amazing to be seeing it like this but my mind couldn't quite absorb it all because it was still reeling from the absurdity of the situation.
As we passed through the double doors into the office I felt dwarfed and small. It felt like a dream, absolutely surreal and I didn't know if I was really supposed to be there. We approached a front desk where a woman greeted us (or rather Eiichi and the man) but when I tried to walk further in with them I was stopped by her.
"Don't worry, she's with me. Motomura is just here to collect his things. He's no longer in our employ."
"Says who?" a booming voice cut in just as a shadow fell over all of us.
I knew that voice and I tensed up, spinning on my heel to see Raging Ohtori himself approaching us. He cut an imposing figure and I found myself moving closer to Eiichi out of instinct really more than anything else. Don't get me wrong, I was still really intimidated by Eiichi at this point too but his father was something else.
"Says me," Eiichi replied, not seeming moved by his father's intimidating presence. "I am no longer pleased with his work and I choose this girl in his place."
His father looked at me for a moment and then laughed.
"Silly child-" Eiichi flinched at being called that but his father continued. "You're being irrational."
"Motomura said it himself that managing our team of seven became a burden from when we were three. If he cannot do it then I've found someone willing," Eiichi replied.
Raging looked at me again and I swallowed the squeak that wanted to come out of my mouth. There was no way I was going to say that I was forced to be here in the first place. I couldn't deny one of my idols anyway if I were to be honest. Being close to Eiichi right now was giving me a heady feeling and it was taking everything in me to just stay on my two feet. If Eiji walked in right then I might possibly faint.
"Little one, do you even know what you're getting into?" he asked me.
I spoke, attempting to look confident, "I... I managed my tennis team in high school."
And of course, I immediately regretted saying it. The smile on Raging's face looked like the cat who caught the canary and he burst out into another sickening laugh looking at his eldest son.
"If this is another silly rebellion of yours, I tell you it's a sure failure. Hire your girl, but we're keeping Takeshi too because this little pet of yours will certainly fail. And when she does it will be on your head."
He walked away with those words and I looked down to my side to see Eiichi clenching his fists.
"Eii-" I began, wanting to say something, anything to make it better but he looked at me then square in the eyes stopping the words on my lips.
"You're mine and you will do as I say and you will not disappoint me."
He walked away, much like his father, leaving me behind in the lobby. Motomura Takeshi let out a loud sigh and looked in my direction.
"I'm sorry about that. He's not usually like that, I promise, but today was a particularly stressful day for him. Nothing quite went the way it was supposed to," he said, smiling at me apologetically. "I'm Motomura Takeshi, HEAVENS manager from day one. And you are?"
"Takahashi Miu!" I said, falling into a full 90-degree bow.
Motomura chuckled. "You don't have to bow so low, Miu-chan. We're family here. There's dysfunction and love in equal measure. Welcome aboard."
I straightened up and nodded, "Yes, sir!"
And that was how I landed my new job as HEAVENS manager. Little did Eiichi know that he just hired a huge Eiji fangirl. Will this be my blessing or my curse? Only time will tell.
