The original ending
Part of the ch 10 carries over to give context.

As my best friend always reminds me, this needs a tissue warning.
*There is major character death. *

The next day, a knock at his door startled him. The night before he had told everyone in a fit of grief-induced rage to leave him alone. He did not want to hunt, he did not want to leave her. He did not need a break or whatever else his family thought, he was not leaving until she woke up.

He glared at Carlisle as he came into the room.

"I'm not here to tell you what to do, I just came to check on Bella."

"No change," Edward said, defeated. It had been too long, something should have happened.

Carlisle touched her forehead, she was cold. Normally when someone was turned they burned with fever, but they were also still alive. Carlisle sighed. "I know you don't want to hear this, but…

Edward cut him off, "she's gone isn't she?"

"Yes," Carlisle couldn't meet Edward's eyes.

A growl ripped from his throat. He slumped onto the bed next to her.

"Emmett, Jasper, and I will bury her son. You don't need to put yourself through that, I will give you some time to say goodbye."

"No" he growled again. "I need to be the one, and I need to go alone."

Edward took a long deep breath, picked up Bella's lifeless body, and leapt from his bedroom window.

He took her to their favorite place, the meadow. It was a beautiful cloudless day. She would have loved this he thought to himself. She loved to go to the meadow. They had made some of their best memories here.

He laid her body softly on the ground even in death she was beautiful. He picked up the shovel he had brought with him and he began to dig. He moved at human speed. He needed this time to connect with what was happening.

After he laid her in the ground and covered her body, he sat down beside her. He was lost without her. He didn't even know where to start. How do you process the death of your soul mate? He started talking to her, pouring his heart out. Saying all the things he wished he could have told her.

"Bella, I hope you truly know how much I love you and I will promise you I will keep your memory alive with every breath I take." His chest tightened. These last four days had been the worst he had ever experienced. He had never thought about his life without her. If she chose to stay human he was counting on seventy or eighty years with her and while that would never be enough he would be grateful for that time, but he had her less than a year.

He was silent for a long time lost in thought. Memories of her flooded his mind. The first time he saw her Biology, their first date, their first kiss. When he told her what he was. He had trusted her with the darkest parts of himself, and she had loved him anyway. She stood beside him when most would have run the other way. They were happy. Bella was his world and that world was gone, he wasn't able to save her.

"I had so many plans for us. So many places I wanted to take you. I wanted you to see where I grew up. I wanted to take you to Rome and Paris. Kiss you under the Eiffel Tower. I wanted to make you my wife, Bella. I will never forgive myself for letting this happen. I shouldn't have fought so hard to keep you human. I wanted you to have a normal life. If I hadn't been so stubborn you would be here with me. I am so sorry Bella I am just so sorry" He collapsed beside her grave overcome with grief.

Edward lost track of time, it had to be past midnight when he heard a shuffling in the trees around the meadow. Emmett emerged from the shadows.

"Hey," he said quietly. "Everyone is worried, why don't you come back to the house? You don't need to be alone right now."

"I can't leave her," Edward said, a sob catching in his throat. Emmett kneeled down beside Edward. "I'm just not quite ready," Edward whispered.

"Okay, I will wait here with you, but you know she would not want you to stay out here forever. She would want you to go on, to be happy." Emmett put his hand on Edward's shoulder giving it a reassuring squeeze.

They sat together until the sky started to lighten. Edward sighed, he knew it was time to go. They got up and Edward followed Emmett to the tree line around the meadow. Just before he disappeared into the trees, he turned around to say one final goodbye. "I will always love you my Bella," and he blew a kiss to his favorite person in the world.

I hope you enjoyed the alternate ending.
