Newts P.O.V.
Newt woke up way earlier than he meant to. The sun was barely rising and everyone except a few Runners were still sleeping. He walked around the Glade as he waited for the others to get up. He said bye to Minho and the other Runners for the day and tried focusing on getting the day's jobs done.
He couldn't focus for many reasons. Mostly he was worried about Callie but another thing grabbed at his attention. Alby.
Alby seemed worried and more on edge than usual. Most people wouldn't notice but Newt did. It was hard to know when Alby was upset about something unless you really knew him.
Newt went into the forest to gather wood and kindling for the bonfire tonight when he heard a noise.
Something was there. He relaxed a little bit, it was probably just a beetle blade. Then he heard it again, it was too loud to be a beetle blade. Something bigger was out there. He turned slowly to not frighten the creature and saw a small pile of leaves move. Carefully Newt reached out a stick and poked the pile.
Hissssssss.
Newt almost fell backwards, then the leaves moved again and a small animal jumped out and knocked him over. The small creature had landed on Newt's chest and was now sitting there looking down at him with big brown eyes. One paw reached out and pressed Newt's nose and mewed.
"Callie!" Newt exclaimed, he lifted the cat off of his chest and stood up, holding the animal carefully. "Are you okay? You better not be hurt." Once he made sure that she wasn't hurt Newt hugged Callie and stroked her head between her ears. "You worried me." He mumbled. Newt walked back to the main Glade and went to find Alby.
One worry resolved, one more to attend to. And this would probably be very difficult.
Newt found Alby in the Homestead, sitting against the wall staring at a spot on the floor. Newt knocked on the open door and leaned on the frame. Alby looked up.
"Hey shuckface," Newt said smiling, "You look gloomy." Alby cracked a small smile.
"Nah, just the day you know?" Newt nodded but he knew it was a lie, "you seem extra cheery today, what's gotten you so happy."
"I found Callie! She was in the forest this morning and she jumped on me." Newt explained, "But there is something going on with you and that's making me worried." He walked over and sat next to Alby.
"The Box comes up today, supposed to be a new Greenie." Newt nodded, "Don't know if there will be."
"Well let's think, what would be the worst thing that could happen if a new Greenie doesn't show up?" Alby shrugged, Newt put a hand on his shoulder, "Come on mate, you're the strategist, what would happen if no one new comes up?"
"Not much, I mean unless they don't send the Box at all nothing can happen to screw everything up. And if something does happen Nick would know what to do." Newt lightly squeezed Albys shoulder.
"See? The worst that could happen isn't even that bad. Come on, the Box should be coming up pretty soon." Newt pushed off the wall and extended his hand out to Alby to help him up. Alby took it and went to stand but Newt's ankle gave out and he lost his footing and fell against Alby, pushing them both into the wall.
"Um sorry." Alby whispered, Newt shook his head, his hair brushing against Albys face.
"Don't be, it was my fault." Newt whispered back, Alby seemed to want to say something then changed his mind.
"Is your ankle okay?" He asked instead, Newt nodded.
"Yeah, it's fine, it's stupid and weak sometimes though." Newt pushed away from Alby and inspected his leg, rubbing the ankle a bit. "Are you good? I sort of landed right on top of you."
"I'm good. Didn't get hurt."
"Good that." They both stood and brushed themselves off, then walked down to the Box. Nick and a few other Gladers were already there. By the time everyone could hear the Box coming most everyone was there. Newt and Alby opened the box and Nick hopped down to meet the new Greenie.
"What's going on? Where am I? Who are you?" The kid asked. Nick put a hand on the guy's shoulder.
"Slim it, Greenie, you're fine. I'm Nick, and this is the Glade. What's your name, Greenie?"
"Ben." The kid replied, he was skinny and had long legs. "Why am I here?"
"No one knows, Greenie. I'm just glad you didn't run." Nick said.
