A/N Thank you again for your reviews. I really appreciate them. I have to admit that I am really enjoying writing this. But I also have to admit I wonder if I would get more reviews if I waited longer to put out chapters.
I am still borrowing these characters.
"Come on Sheldon, he's her Father for God's sake. And, besides, he had just flown in, how could he possibly get the gun and gloves?"
"I know it makes no sense, Leonard, but look at where we are. If, as you insist, Penny is not lying to us and we assume she is not keeping something from us, or she has completely forgotten how she got the gun, what other possibility is there?"
"I don't know, but it must be something we're missing."
"As outlandish as it seems, we should at least consider the possibility before we dismiss it out of hand."
"So, what do you suggest? I guess we could ask him."
"If he did put it in her purse, I think he would have told us about it if he was innocent."
"Okay, just to play along, did someone bring it to him at the airport after he landed?" He went on a little sarcastically, "Maybe he hired someone to kill him and then decided to frame his daughter?"
Not seeming to notice the sarcasm, "Those are possibilities but there is a simpler hypothesis that can easily be proven or disproven; he was not on that flight at all."
Leonard sighed, "All right, if it will get you off this craziness, let's see if he was on the flight."
Sheldon pulled over his computer and quickly began to type. "Fortunately, I have had the need to check into how to access that data before."
After a few moments, he went on, "Okay, Flight 124 from Omaha arrived at three P.M."
He soon looked up with a gloating smile on his face, "It appears that there was no Wyatt Andrews on that flight."
Leonard, who had been waiting to for once be able to say I told you so, got up and rushed over to look.
Grasping at straws, "Maybe he used another name."
"Come, Leonard, you know that is next to impossible nowadays. Besides, why would he do that?"
"Okay, I admit you were right. That doesn't have to mean anything. Maybe he got on an earlier flight and just waited for her to pick him up."
He continued, "Check to see what other flights came in around that time."
Sheldon went back to his computer; "It appears there were four flights that arrived before three that day. They were from New York, Chicago, Sioux City, and Memphis."
"Sioux City, that's in Iowa, isn't it? Is it close to Omaha?"
Sheldon made another entry, "It appears to be approximately 100 miles away."
"I suppose it is possible he drove up there; what time did that flight get in?"
"Let's see, it arrived at 2:25."
"See, that would explain it. Maybe he had some business in Sioux City or it was cheaper to fly out of there."
"Really, Leonard. Very well, let's see if he was on that flight."
After a few moments, "No Wyatt Andrews. Are you satisfied now?"
Leonard returned to his seat and flopped in his chair. "All we have proven is that he arrived somehow at a different time. There could be lots of reasons for that. Maybe he's having an affair and came early to be with her. Maybe he had business and decided not to tell Penny."
Sheldon sighed, "I suppose that is possible. And I do admit, it does seem inconceivable that he could be involved but I think we need to prove that. We would be remiss if we didn't check it out further."
"I have to agree. What do you suggest we do?"
"If possible, we need to figure out when he did arrive in Omaha. I can start by checking all the flights that came in, as farfetched as it would seem that he would have come from those other origins."
Twenty minutes later, Sheldon sat back, having spent the time working at his computer. "Well, that's that, I could not find his name on any flights that arrived in Pasadena on or before the day of the murder. I suppose he could have come earlier than that, but think we should adopt as a working hypothesis that he did not fly in."
Leonard, who had got himself a cup of coffee, took a sip and said, "Well, then he must have driven in or took a train."
"Leonard, you know I know all there is about the train system. There is no train route that would fit the criteria we have established."
"Okay, so he drove. He could have hardly driven his own car since he flew on to Seattle. If he did fly to Seattle."
"Good point, let's check that out." After just a moment, "There was a Wyatt Andrews on the flight to Seattle."
"So, it's likely he used a rental car. Can we check to see if anyone dropped one off during that time?"
"Already on it. This may take a while; I have not tried this before."
Sometime later with both of them working on it, they were able to access some information. It turned out that twenty-five cars had been turned in at the airport the day of the murder, but they both were excited to see one had been turned in at 3:02.
Leonard said the obvious, "That would have just given him enough time to meet Penny outside the terminal. Do we know where it came from?"
"That is logical, but he could have turned it in earlier, so we would need to check out them all."
Sheldon continued, "Unfortunately, with the information we have been able to access, all we have is the time, information about the car and the license number. This was apparently just data for inventory at this location. It does not give the name of the user or where it originated."
Leonard suddenly said, "If we can't do it at this end, perhaps we can find out at the other, assuming the one we want was rented in Omaha." Seeing the look on Sheldon's face, "It just seems it would be quite a coincidence that another rental car from Omaha was turned in during that time frame."
Sheldon smiled, "Very good, Leonard. Okay. Let's see what we can find out. To give us a better chance we should assume he drove straight through or did not stop for any great length of time along the way."
Leonard pointed out he could have stayed over some place. Sheldon agreed and expanded the search.
When they accessed the Omaha office, they found there were thirty-three cars rented in the time range they had arrived at. They were disappointed when none of them were rented by Wyatt Andrews.
They were about to try to think of trying something else when Leonard literally slapped himself in the head. "Sheldon, do they have the license plate?"
Berating himself, Sheldon quickly looked. He then said excitedly, "One of them matches!" He smiled, "And it is the one turned in at 3:02."
But then he said sadly, "But the name is Susan Elford."
They were both quiet for a minute and then Leonard said, "It CAN'T be a coincidence. What are the odds that a car would be rented in Omaha and be turned in at Pasadena at just the right time?" Maybe he used another name."
Sheldon said, "A girl's name? Perhaps it was someone he knows."
He went on, "We could check with Penny to see if she recognizes the name."
Leonard considered that, "I guess. But I really hate to get Penny involved until we have more. If we're wrong, I don't want her to know what we are thinking about her Father."
After a moment, he smiled, "But I could try Kurt. He was with her for a long time, maybe he would know."
"Hi, Kurt, this is Leonard."
"Hey, Lenny, good to hear from you. We've missed you at the gym but I know how you have been working to try to help Penny. I hope you have some good news."
"We are working on something and actually, you could maybe help us."
"Me? Just ask."
"Have you ever heard the name Susan Elford?"
"Well, yeah, that's Penny's mother."
"But the last nameā¦"
"She's a big shot lawyer. Well, in Omaha at least. Her father started the firm and she uses her maiden name for professional reasons. What does she have to do with this?"
"Probably nothing, just checking something out."
"Well, okay. But if there is anything else I can help you with, give me a call. You know how I feel about you and Penny."
"Thanks, Kurt. I appreciate that."
Sheldon and Leonard looked at each other, trying to absorb what they had found.
Finally, Leonard said, "Do we have enough to go to the Police?"
Sheldon thought for a time and then said, "I hate to say it, but I don't think so. I mean there are a lot of explanations for what we have found out. There could be a lot of good reasons why he drove instead of flying and kept it from Penny. Besides, there is still the fact he is her father. And we have nothing that ties him to the murder or the gun. I myself still find it hard to believe, with all we know, that he had anything to do with it."
"You're right. They're not going to reopen the investigation on what we have. So, what do we do now?"
Sheldon, thinking he knew how Leonard would react, "We could tell Penny what we know. Maybe she could help us."
Sheldon was not disappointed, "I know that makes sense, but then she would know that I suspect her father. As you say, we could be way off base. She might never forgive me."
Sheldon sighed, "You won't have much of a future if she goes to prison either." Seeing the look on Leonard's face, "Very well, perhaps we could talk to the mother."
Leonard thought that might be just as bad or worse in the long run but Sheldon was right, they had to try something.
"Okay. Let's give her a call."
"I was thinking more of speaking to her face to face. There is also the possibility we may want to follow up on what she says or think of some other line of investigation depending on how she reacts. I believe we need to go to Omaha."
Leonard was stunned, but then realized he was right. Nodding his head, he suddenly thought of something. "You know, Sheldon, if we are right about Wyatt, we might find ourselves in danger. Maybe I should bring the gun."
Sheldon rolled his eyes. When they had first opened the office, they were still caught up in the detectives they had read about and it seemed that they should have a weapon. "You know, Leonard, that neither of us should be trusted with a gun. It is more likely we would kill each other than protect ourselves."
Leonard was about to object, saying they had used guns in video games, but realized how that sounded. Finally, he had to agree. But then he thought of something else, "All right, but how about if I see if Kurt can join us? At least, we will have some muscle."
As much as Sheldon was amazed and dismayed by Leonard's strange friendship with Kurt, he had to admit he could be an asset in this situation.
When they contacted Kurt, he was excited to have a chance to help. It turned out he even had a pistol that he had obtained after an incident at the bar.
So, three days later, the expanded Cooper Hofstadter Detective Agency boarded a plane for Omaha. Leonard had still insisted they just tell Penny they were following up a lead and did not tell her their destination. He had been careful not to raise her hopes. He still knew this was most likely a wild goose chase.
