A/N As usual, I want to thank my reviewers. I love you guys. I have to admit, I was mystified at first as to why SRAM thought Penny was on the trip. Then I reread my last paragraph and could easily see that it could be interpreted that way. For the record, only Kurt went with them. I apologize profusely for any of you that were misled by my careless phrasing. Now on with the story.
I still own nothing.
Due to the fact they got tickets at the last minute, they were not seated together on the plane. They had not even explained their mission to Kurt but just told him there could be some trouble where they were going and they could use his help. He had readily agreed.
They waited until they were checked into the hotel and were all in Sheldon's and Leonard's room to sit down to talk.
After getting a beer from the room refrigerator, Kurt took a drink and began, "Okay, so now tell me, what is going on? What are we doing in Omaha? What trouble are you expecting?"
Leonard answered, "We'll explain everything but first we have a couple questions and I also want to say how much we appreciate you dropping everything and coming to help."
"Thanks, but I was glad you asked me." He paused, "Although it ended badly between Penny and I, we were close for a long time. And, I don't know, for some reason I think you two would be good together."
Leonard nodded and he was pleased with what Kurt said about him and Penny, but he also felt a surge of jealousy that they had been together. But he just as quickly dismissed it, that was ancient history.
Sheldon spoke up, "Before we fill you in, could you answer a couple questions?"
Kurt took a drink, "Fire away."
"How well do you know Penny's father?"
"Is that why we're down here?" Before either could answer, he went on, "When I was with Penny, he came up and visited a couple times and we visited them down here once. He and I got along all right."
"How about him and Penny?"
Kurt sat up, "You don't think he had anything to do with all this, do you?"
Leonard broke in, "To be honest, we are not sure. We know it's crazy to suspect him, but from all we know, he was the only person who had the best chance to put that stuff in Penny's purse."
Kurt sat back, "I don't know about that, but I think you are way off base. Oh, they didn't always get along." He smirked, "They are both stubborn as mules. Penny told me once they were really close until she blossomed out and discovered boys. She was a little wild and her Dad had a hard time with her messing around. But to do anything to harm her, I just can't see it."
Leonard and Sheldon went over all that they had learned about Wyatt's activities and how they had been at a standstill.
When they finished, Kurt ran his fingers through his hair, "I guess I can see where your coming from but there has got to be another explanation."
Leonard and Sheldon assured him they hoped there was but felt they needed to follow through. At the least, they would eliminate him as a suspect.
They broke up and the next morning called the law firm of Elford and Elford and arranged to talk to Susan. She was surprised when she heard they were in Omaha and got suspicious when they asked her not to tell Wyatt she had heard from them until they had talked with her. She only agreed because they said it was important to their investigation.
They left Kurt at the hotel, thinking Susan would wonder why he was there. They also weren't sure what Susan might think of him after what he had done to Penny.
After they were seated, Susan looked at them expectantly, but also had her guard up.
Leonard started, "Thank you for seeing us. As you know, we are working to prove that Penny is innocent. Some questions have been raised and we think you can help us with them."
"I'll do anything I can." She hesitated, "But I would think it would be Wyatt you would want to talk to."
Sheldon broke in, "Did you lease a car in your name for your husband in the days before the murder?"
"How did you know about that?" She paused, "Yes, I often did that. The rental office is just down the street. We have done business with them for years and they know I am probably doing it for Wyatt. Why are you asking about that?"
"Why did Wyatt drive instead of taking his flight?"
"I wish you would tell me what this is all about."
Leonard spoke up, "I assure you we feel these questions are important."
A little mollified she answered, "After he had told Penny about the flight, he got a call from the wife of an old friend of his. She told him he was very ill. Wyatt decided to drive so he could stop and visit him. He figured he could get to Pasadena about the same time if he left a couple of days early."
"Why didn't he tell Penny of his change in plans?"
"I don't know. I guess he just figured he would get there in plenty of time. Maybe he thought he could make it a little early and surprise her."
"Do you know if he did get there early?"
"No. But then with everything that happened, I never asked and he never thought to tell me."
Then, it was apparent she had enough, "Okay, what is going on? Why are you asking these questions?"
Sheldon ignored her, "I have just one more." He took a deep breath, "Do you know if there were any problems between Penny and her Father?"
"Why would you ask that?" Then she just stared at them and they could see her getting angry, "My God, you don't think Wyatt would do anything to hurt Penny. He's her father for God's sake."
She stood up, "I think you should leave now. And the way Wyatt is going to react to this, I would suggest you head back to Pasadena."
Leonard tried to defuse the situation, "Susan, if you could please sit down, I would like to explain why we felt it necessary to do this. We also want to see Wyatt and explain it to him as well."
Seeing her seem to cool down a little, he went on, "From what we have heard, we have come to know that we were wrong to ever suspect Wyatt, but I think after we explain, you will know we were just trying to do all we could to prove Penny's innocence." He paused, "It may also be possible that Wyatt might be able to provide us some information."
Still obviously upset, Susan sat back down, "It's only because the last time I talked to Penny and she told me that she trusted you that I am not having you thrown out."
She smirked, "I can't speak for Wyatt. He might dig out his shotgun."
Sheldon and Leonard both blanched. Maybe it was good they had brought Kurt after all.
After Leonard explained what had raised their suspicions, Susan had relaxed a little. After thinking it over for a few minutes, "Why don't you come out to the farm tonight? I'll try to have Wyatt cooled down. Do you need instructions on how to get there?"
Leonard answered, "No, actually Kurt Adams is with us and I understand he has been there."
She was stunned, "Kurt is with you?" She sat back, "I was surprised when he cheated on her. I always thought they would end up getting married." She went on, "That may be a blessing he's along. Wyatt was upset how it ended but he and Kurt always got along and they came to an understanding about what had happened."
"When they got back to the Hotel, Leonard and Sheldon brought Kurt up to date on what had happened. When they finished, Kurt spoke up, "So, I guess you have decided that you were wrong about Wyatt."
Leonard nodded but Sheldon said, "There is still one question I need to ask so hopefully we can eliminate him as the killer. What time did he arrive in Pasadena?"
Leonard sighed but realized Sheldon was right. Then he decided to bring up something he had been thinking about since talking to Kurt and Susan. "I am kind of ashamed we didn't think of this sooner. Even if Wyatt didn't do it, the restaurant is still the most likely spot where someone could have got at Penny's purse. Maybe Wyatt or Penny can remember something."
It wasn't without more than a bit of trepidation that Sheldon and Leonard traveled out to the farm. Leonard wondered what Penny was going to think about all of this. What would she think of him when she found out he had suspected her father? It all seemed stupid now.
Sheldon however suffered no such regrets, he pointed out to Leonard that it was a logical path to follow. In fact, he still wanted to know when Wyatt arrived in Pasadena.
Both of them were glad Kurt was with them, but they did not appreciate the ribbing he had given them during the trip to the farm about how wrong they had been about Wyatt. He ended it by saying it was a good thing he had brought a gun. He might need to protect them from Wyatt after all.
Susan let them in and led them into the living room where Wyatt was seated. He did not rise but just glared at them. He did say hello to Kurt who returned his greetings.
There was a long awkward silence until Sheldon spoke up. To Leonard's shock and chagrin, he asked, "Do you have anything that shows what time you arrived in Pasadena on the day of the murder?"
There was a shocked silence, then Wyatt stunned them all when he started laughing. He got up and as Sheldon cringed back, went over and slapped him on the back, "Damnit, Cooper, you really are one of a kind."
He turned to the others, "When Susan told me that you guys had apparently thought I would do anything to hurt Penny, I was thinking of getting out my gun. But then I remember how Penny had told me on the phone how grateful she was that you were working to prove her innocent." He turned to Leonard, "She also told me how she knew she could trust you."
"I decided as absurd as it seemed, I could see how you had to consider the restaurant as a possible place that those things could have been put in Penny's purse. And that could lead you to wonder about me, especially when it appeared I had deceived Penny about the flight."
He turned back to Sheldon, "I thought you might be asking that. So, let's settle this once and for all." He leaned down and took a piece of paper off a table and handed it to Sheldon. "I dug this out when Susan told me what was going on. That is a receipt for gas that I bought on the day of the murder. It has a date and time stamp. If you do the math, you will see I had to really push it to even get to Pasadena by three o'clock."
Sheldon took it and after a moment, handed it back. "Thank you." He turned to Leonard, "He is correct, he could not have been in Pasadena at the time of the murder."
Wyatt gestured for them all to set down. "Okay, so now that is out of the way. What's next?"
Then Susan spoke up, "Can I get anybody anything?"
With everyone except Sheldon fortified with a beer, he chose water, Leonard spoke up, "The only other possibility we could think of was that someone else could have done it at the restaurant. Was the purse ever left by itself?"
Wyatt sat back and took a long drink from his beer, "You know, now that you mention it, there was a time. I hadn't thought about it before." He looked apologetic, "Penny or I should have thought of that ourselves."
Leonard quickly said, "I wouldn't beat up on yourself too much, none of us considered it. We just assumed it had been done elsewhere."
Wyatt nodded, "Anyway, we had just ordered and Penny got up to go to the girl's room. After she left, I decided I would check out the Gift Shop. I knew one of the men at the convention just had his fiftieth birthday and I thought I could try to find some kind of gag gift."
Sheldon asked, "How long were you gone?"
"Not more that five or six minutes. They really didn't have much of a selection. When I got back, Penny still wasn't there."
Leonard spoke up, "Did you notice anything? Was there anyone who seemed interested in you guys? Was the restaurant crowded?"
"I really don't remember anyone. The restaurant was set up so that although the tables were reasonably close, they were partitioned off so you really couldn't see anyone at the next table. As to your other question, it was pretty empty."
Sheldon persisted, "Think again, this is very important, you didn't notice anything out of the ordinary? Did you see anyone around the table when you were leaving or when you came back?"
Wyatt showed a little of his temper, "I know it's important. Don't you think I would help if I could?"
Leonard quickly said, "He didn't mean anything, Wyatt, we are all frustrated."
Wyatt answered, "I know. Sorry I jumped on you."
Suddenly his voice faded away and he got a smile on his face and he seemed to phase out for a minute.
Kurt asked, "Wyatt, are you all right?"
Wyatt snapped out of it, "Yeah, I'm fine, I was just thinking about someone I did see by the gift shop." Then he got embarrassed as if he realized who he was talking to, he mumbled, "She left right away."
Susan spoke up, "She?" She smirked, "Let me guess, she had big boobs."
As Wyatt turned red and the others stared, she went on, "Wyatt's always been a breast man. You forgot I was here, didn't you?"
Suddenly, Leonard had a crazy thought, he sat up a little, "Is she right, Wyatt, is that what you saw?"
Wyatt looked at his wife, "I couldn't help it, Sue, I mean they were practically falling out." He looked apologetic, "I am only human."
As she sneered at him, Kurt was now interested. He looked at Leonard and confirmed what they were thinking. He asked Wyatt, "Can you describe what she was wearing?"
Wyatt looked surprised, "What does it matter? Let's just forget I said anything."
Leonard joined in, "It could be important, just humor us."
"Well, she had on a top and a pair of jeans. Really nothing special."
Kurt asked, "Was she wearing a belt?"
"I wasn't really looking at her waist."
Leonard persisted, "Anything else you remember? Her hair? Her eyes?"
Wyatt wasn't sure what was going on, but it seemed this could be important. He thought for a few moments, "Her hair was brown, but had blond streaks in it."
Leonard and Kurt caught each other's eyes. Finally, Leonard asked it, "Was she by any chance wearing a scarf?"
Wyatt eyes widened, "Yes. I remember how one of the ends was hanging down by her…"
Leonard and Kurt said simultaneously, "Cheryl!"
