Hi, so here is another chapter, again this one and the next one probably are just little filler chapters and then the third arc of the story will take place. I envision this being twenty eight chapters long so there is plenty of more drama to come!
Disclaimer-Nothing here is mine just this chapter.
Please Read and Review and let me know what you think.
On another note, I will not update between now and Xmas Eve. As some of you know I tend to do a multiple update Xmas Eve and maybe even New Years Eve so while I will carry on this story expect two or three chapters on that day.
Self-Fulfilling Prophecy
Chapter 16-Fly Like A Bird
Bella has woken up and found out about Jacob (and she is not happy) as she and Edward celebrate immortality Emmett considers fatherhood when he babysits Renesmee. Emmett's point of view next couple of chapters.
"Life is under no obligation to give us what we expect" Margaret Mitchell.
Bella had not been pleased.
To be fair had it been his daughter Emmett wouldn't have been very pleased either.
He didn't understand this whole imprinting thing but if you wanted his opinion even after Edward had explained it three times to them all it still sounded very dodgy. However he did understand that the threat of the wolves had been reduced somewhat. With Jacob now bonded to the baby they could not go after Bella or them for breaking their treaty or whatever jumped up plan it had been. From what Jacob had said it was enough to guarantee them some breathing room and that was all that Emmett needed. Because he had known throughout all of this that Rosalie had been perhaps number two on the target list.
And that would not stand.
Even thinking about it set his teeth on edge.
But despite it all Bella had woken up, all dark hair and red eyes and actually able to hurt Edward (and oh! How Emmett had cheered at that one—and Jasper too because it had just been too funny, despite the look they had both gotten from Carlisle) and she had gone off into the forest, somehow managed to not eat a human along the way, she had also not managed to kill the werewolf.
Emmett had to admire her.
He had admired Bella from the first moment she had stepped into their house that first time. He had stayed away because it was Rosalie, because she had not wanted to meet the human who was throwing away the life that his wife had wanted above everything else. Because it was Rosalie…
It was his wife.
It was his heart.
It was his soul.
And Edward could go to hell for all that everything mattered afterwards.
But he liked to think that he was Edward's brother and that mattered too.
But after Carlisle had set Seth's shoulder and Bella and Edward had seen their new home he thought that perhaps they could relax. It was hard to believe that nearly a week ago they had been at each other's throats. It was hard to believe that three weeks ago Bella and Edward had been on their honeymoon. It was strange, so, so strange to imagine a world without Nessie in it and it was strange to envision a world with her in it as well. The world where a vampire and a human could have sexual relations and a child from that union could be born healthy, human, whole.
It was just…strange.
He took a seat on the porch outside letting the swing from the wood rock him a little. It was night time a breaking dawn soon on the horizon and it made him homesick for Tennessee in a way that he had not felt for decades.
Maybe when all of this was over he should go back. His family were mostly dead but there were nephews and there were nieces and he wanted to watch them on the horizon. He wanted to breathe in the clean crisp air and see the railroad he had helped to build (originally), there was something about this pregnancy that had sent him spiralling for home.
The door to the porch opened and he knew it was Rosalie. She had the baby in her arms and Emmett moved so she could sit down next to him. Nessie snuffled in her sleep and Emmett watched the lashes flutter against the little plump cheek and he felt that wave of longing wash through him which was strange because Emmett had never had an opinion on children. He had never longed for them in the way that Rosalie had.
"She's asleep"
"I figured"
"Bella and Edward are having some alone time"
Emmett snorted out a laugh. Rosalie hushed at him and then jerked her chin to the baby but Emmett got the impression that she was dreaming, dead to the world.
"Rose the baby's asleep. I think we can say out loud that Edward and Bella are fucking like horny rabbits. There's no need to stop or be careful or rest…remember what we used to be like?"
If Rosalie could have blushed Emmett knew that she would have done. Everyone in the house knew what they had been liked in the early days. Edward still didn't like him to even think of it and it was one of Emmett's greatest joys to think about it whenever Edward pissed him off. It had taken a solid ten years before they could be back with the civilised vampires—as Jasper had put it—and Emmett was quite sure there was a clearing in the woods in Wisconsin where even animals were afraid to go.
It had finally come to a head when Carlisle had heard on the radio that there had been a thinning of trees in the forest for reasons beyond the local wildlife conservation people's knowledge and he had forced them to get a grip on themselves.
(Watching Edward's face as Carlisle attempted to give them all the sex talk was one of the funniest things that Emmett had ever seen. At that point Jasper had been with them and it had been the first time Emmett had seen the guy laugh. All in all it had been a fun night).
The baby shifted a little in Rosalie's arms and her hand came out to stroke down his cheek.
"You went far away there love" she said softly.
"I was just thinking about…about what comes next" he said finally. "Now it's all over. I mean eventually we are going to have to move I know that much and I guess Jacob's gonna come with us which is…okay I suppose but…and I know we said we'd take a little break and go to Mexico for a couple of years but…"
"But you don't wanna do that?"
Emmett shook his head.
"I know you wanna be close to Nessie" he said smiling. "And I do as well. For a while. She's already grown so much in the space of the last few days. I want to see it a little bit more"
"But?"
Damn she knew him too well.
"I want to go home for a bit" he said quietly and he knew that she understood what he meant by home. "I want to see the old places and just…just breathe in the air. I know you don't want to leave Nessie but I want to…I can go alone Rose that doesn't bother me but I want to go home for a little while and see what's left. I feel like I've been running on empty for a long time, since this began maybe even before that. I love Bella like a sister but the truth is since she crashed down into our lives it's been one crisis after another. James, that party, leaving, coming back, the Volturi, the wolves, Victoria, the newborns, the wedding and now this. I just need to stand somewhere and be very still and breathe in and breathe out and then I will be fine"
"I understand" Rose said and her voice was soft. "Here take the baby"
And Emmett did. He looked down at baby Nessie fast asleep and for all the world he would have given it for her to be their baby. For this to be their house with their baby and Rosalie wouldn't be in jeans but in a soft dress with an apron and he would have been in trousers and braces and it would have been a little house just like he's thought about. Their child wouldn't be named Renesmee it would have been called something more 1930s and she would have been the first of many.
He knows that Rosalie's dream. Knows that it is the one regret that she has. He just didn't realise until this moment how much it was a part of his.
"What you thinking Em?"
"You'd have been a great Mom" he said quietly looking down at the sleeping baby so he doesn't have to look at her. He wasn't sure that he could look at her with her expression like that.
"Thank you" she said softly and her hand which had been at the back of his neck stroking up and down continued. Emmett felt his eyes close as her knuckles went back and forth down the bottom of his neck. If he was a human he knew he would be sleeping too along with little baby Nessie.
"You'd have been a great Dad" she said just as quietly and he nodded forcing his eyes open and back to the baby.
"Thank you" he said and she smiled tucking her head on his shoulder and looking down at little Nessie in his arms. Emmett had never been around enough babies to define weather or not one was cute or not but he thought that Nessie was a very cute baby.
And she didn't even have Edward's nose.
What a blessing.
Rosalie snorted and he realised that he had spoken out loud.
"Well I'm right" he said quietly grinning at his wife who was openly grinning back at him and it was like they were eighteen and nineteen, actually eighteen and nineteen and not their age in years which would put them more towards eighty than anything else. A lifetime together without getting old. Frozen in time.
Sometimes Emmett thought he understood Rosalie a lot more than anyone else. He thought he got why she had voted no. And he thought all things considering that if he had been a braver man he would have voted no too.
But they had been coming down from the high that had been the Volturi and Emmett knew he would have done anything to get Edward to stay. Edward was his brother. His brother loved Bella. Bella made Edward happy the same way Rosalie made him happy. He didn't have to understand the ins and the outs of it. For him it was that simple. And he had liked Bella from the start. So voting for her to be a member of the family, for her to be a vampire had been an easy decision for him. Looking back…he could understand his wife a whole lot better now. Now he holds a baby in his arms and thinks about what could have been.
"It would have been enough" he said quietly. "You and a baby and a small house…all of it, it would have been enough. And I didn't get it until this moment. And for that I am so sorry my darling"
Rosalie smiled and gently she kissed him. It was soft and tender and nice and all the good things that he had ever wanted.
"Apology accepted" she said gently. "And thank you"
"For what?"
"Standing by my side. I know this put you in a terrible situation. Had this gone wrong…I know it would have destroyed you to lose Edward and Alice and Jasper"
Because she had known what it was Emmett realised. She had known that he would stand by her and if Bella died then it was game over for Edward. Even if Edward had managed to survive the death of his mate he would have never have let them near him. He wouldn't have needed the Volturi. Emmett did wonder if before Jacob had turned up Edward had thought of going for Rosalie, Emmett would have done the job easily if it had been the only thing that kept his wife from harm. Edward was fast, Emmett was strong and Jasper wouldn't have known what to do in terms of their emotions because Edward was fast and Emmett was strong.
And then it would have been game over. Alice would have sided with Emmett, Jasper would have sided with his wife. And there in the middle was Carlisle and Esme watching their family disintegrate. Looking back Emmett thought what they had achieved was nothing short of a miracle.
Rosalie's look told him that she had considered this before she had taken her decision. Emmett considered it himself and privately thought that he was relieved that he had not considered it in too much depth.
"You never have to look for me Rose" he said quietly. "I am yours heart and soul. You never had to wonder what side I was on. Even if I didn't think you could do it. But make no mistake I will never underestimate you again"
Rosalie smiled.
"Softie."
Emmett grinned and they kissed again.
"I'll speak to Esme in the morning let her know we're gonna spend some months in Tennessee"
"You'd come?"
The even if it means leaving the baby? was left unsaid.
Rosalie smiled.
"You never have to look for me and find me gone either Emmett" she said still soft.
"It won't be forever" he said quietly. "A month at most, I just want to make sure that they are all cared for"
"I know"
The door to the porch slid open and Seth Clearwater came out. He had showered and changed and been fed from the looks of it and he was scuffing his toe along the wood of the deck looking rather nervous.
"Can I…can I try holding her Emmett? I've never held a baby before"
"Sure Seth" Emmett said cheerfully handing over Renesmee. Seth looked nervous for about half a second and then his face broke into a little smile.
"She likes you Seth"
"She likes everyone" Rosalie said brushing her golden hair over her shoulder.
"She likes you Seth" he said again shooting his wife a look. Seth didn't seem to care.
"I'm gonna go to the couch" Seth said quietly and even Rosalie cracked a smile when she saw how gingerly he walked.
"You like him" Emmett said teasingly.
"He grows on you" Rosalie admitted grudgingly refusing to concede the point at all. "Kinda like Edward does. Out of all of them he's not the worst that's for sure"
"You like him" Emmett teased again and she stood up throwing a look over her shoulder that he knew was an invitation that he would never, ever turn down.
"I don't mind him" she conceded. "God knows one dog is same as any other."
Emmett cracked a laugh of genuine amusement and followed his wife up the stairs. They too had all the time in the world.
And he was damn well going use it.
