That overglow, Where the moment goes
MarciaChapter2: I laughed so hard at your comment lol. Puns are a practically useless talent of mine other than coming up with fictional names of talk shows for fanfic lol.
Iris7124 Thank you so much! Sorry we are making you suffer lol. And we love the Cooper/Blaine relationship too!
I think the general consensus is that everyone wants to smack some sense into Blaine lol. We shall see what Cooper can do...
Monday morning
Cooper jumped out of his car and told the driver to give him five minutes. Tina and Sam were already waiting for him on the sidewalk in front of the house they shared with his brother, worried frowns creasing their faces. He joined them, mirroring their stances with arms crossed and speaking quietly as if Blaine had his ear to the door.
"Okay, start from the beginning."
Sam let out a deep breath. "He came home yesterday evening from that date he had been so excited for and was acting all weird. He was doing that thing where he was responding, but it was like one word answers.
"I asked him how it went and I was playing a game and I asked if he wanted to join which he usually does, but he said no. I asked if he was okay and he just kind of…" Sam did an impression of Blaine, shrugging and frowning. "So I asked him again if he was okay. Then he fills a glass with water and just downs the whole thing. Then he filled it up again. I asked if it was a good date and he got all sad and said it was the best. I asked if he was seeing him again and he said no. It was super weird. He just took his glass of water off to his room and hasn't come out since."
Tina had been nodding along and after Sam finished, she spoke up. "I had a date with Mike and when I got home it was around eleven. He still hadn't come out and we kept hearing noises."
Cooper stroked his chin. "Noises?"
They both nodded.
"Quiet singing. Guitar. Pretty sure I heard his keyboard, but he had headphones on," Sam replied.
A smile broke free on Cooper's face. "That's great news! He's writing music again!"
Tina tucked a strand of hair that escaped her bun behind her ear. "That's what we thought, but he usually will at least come out and show us. He hasn't left his room since he talked to Sam."
Sam nodded and folded his arms again. "He's just acting weird. It's… It's not like last time, but I don't know…"
Tina smoothed down her scrub top. "We just wanted to keep you informed. We don't want things to get bad again."
Cooper smiled weakly, a fraction of what it normally was. "Okay, thanks. Let's just keep an eye on him and let me know if anything else weird happens. As far as the date, I'll let him tell me about it. If it didn't work out yesterday, I have a guy for him. Now, I can't name names, but he came on my show the the other day and he seemed like he had a thing for Blaine, so I'm going to try and hook them up."
Sam narrowed his eyes at a fire hydrant. "How is he peeing? He drank so much water and hasn't left his room…"
Tina rolled her eyes. "Seriously? That's what you're thinking about?" She shook her head.
"It's concerning."
"What's concerning is you are focused on that. You're a dude and you can't figure out any way he's peeing?"
Sam nodded slowly, but didn't elaborate.
Cooper's driver honked and he checked his watch. "Okay, I have to go, but I'll see what I can get out of him at work and you guys let me know what happens when you wake him up." He stuck out his hand and Sam immediately put his on top. They both looked at Tina who was eyeing the sky like she was asking for help from a higher power.
"Do we have to? This is silly."
"Tina!" Sam huffed. "We are Team No More Blainey Days and we have to stay united! Put your hand in!"
Cooper nodded solemnly along with him.
She sighed in exasperation and put her hand on top of theirs. "Fine. But this is dumb."
Blaine had exactly five minutes to leave before he would be late for work. He had surprised Tina and Sam by not having to be woken up that morning. They had both popped their heads in his door earlier that morning to wake him up like they were his mom and dad or something. Their mouths had dropped open when they saw him wide awake and dressed. The whole time they interrogated him, he bounced a leg trying to keep his mind blank until they left him alone again so he wouldn't forget something.
The floodgates had opened.
After the date with Kurt came to a squealing, grinding halt, Blaine had dropped him off and watched him leave with longing. Kurt looked so sad when he turned him down and it hurt him too. However, it couldn't be helped. It was for the best.
He rode around on his motorcycle for awhile, letting his mind go on autopilot as he replayed every second of the day starting with the moment Kurt arrived at the restaurant and ending at the beach. He stopped it before it got to the end.
On his way back home, it started to come to him. A song. Lyrics. A melody. All of it. He rushed home, fended off Sam's questions, and hurried to his room. Time was lost to him as he worked and worked and suddenly the black outside his windows was tinting in grey. It was morning.
He would be screaming and crying with joy if he wasn't so goddamn exhausted. He absolutely couldn't wait to show Sam and Tina and Cooper the song when it was done. They would be so excited too. That's if it was any good. He shook his head as he grabbed his things and started out the door. Maybe he could write some more stuff down in between filming today.
As soon as he left his room, Sam and Tina pounced on him.
"What's up, man? Like, what you been up to? What are you doing in there? You haven't been to the bathroom. What's up with that?"
Tina gave Sam a shut up look at his rapid-fire questions. "We were just wondering how you were doing? It sounded like music earlier."
Blaine grabbed a piece of toast from Sam's plate. "Actually, it was. But it's not finished yet."
Sam made a disgruntled noise and made a grab for the toast, but Blaine danced out of his reach before smacking a crumb-filled kiss to Tina's cheek. "Gotta go, but I'll see you guys later!"
He was out the door and climbing on his motorcycle before they could follow him.
"I'm going nowhere, I can't move forward…" Blaine sang quietly to himself as he drove to work. It was definitely coming together. Blaine smiled behind his helmet. At least something in his life was.
"Christopher Kurt Hudson-Hummel! Would you hold still?!"
The baby laughed and wriggled around his changing table as Kurt tried to wrestle a diaper on him. It was like he grew extra limbs with how he batted Kurt's hands away. His phone began to ring and he would have let it go to voicemail if Marley hadn't been on her way. It wasn't Marley calling though.
"Hey! How's my two favorite guys?" Burt Hummel said excitedly from the screen of Kurt's phone.
Hearing his grandfather's voice, Kit rolled his head over and waved at the man who was grinning like a fool and waving back.
Kurt took the opportunity to quickly wrap the diaper around Kit's little hips and secure it. After sliding on his little pants, he carried the phone and the child into the kitchen with him.
"We're fine now that we are dressed," Kurt said as he tickled Kit's neck with his nose. Kit squealed in response.
Burt was eyeing Kurt's Versace bathrobe. "I know you work in fashion and I don't get it, but I have to tell you that shirt kind of looks like a bathrobe, kiddo."
"It is a bathrobe, Dad. I learned my lesson about waiting to put on my designer shirts until after Kit's had breakfast."
Burt nodded in understanding. "Makes sense."
"Why are you up so early?" Kurt grumbled after a rather sleepless night.
After Kit had gone to bed, he had been alone with his thoughts and recalled his date with Blaine. At first he was a bit hurt, then disappointed, but unsurprised. Most people weren't looking to settle down so young. He knew it hadn't exactly been in the plan for him, but if he had to do it all over again, he would do everything the same (except maybe give his ex a bigger heads up.)
He was trying to see the bright side of this whole thing, however. Sure, he was ridiculously attracted to Blaine, but that was probably just because he was super horny and Blaine was hot. They had a great date and really clicked, but they had different thoughts and feelings about children. Maybe they could be friends. Kurt could always use more friends. His takeaway was that one date had gone pretty well and it gave him hope for future dates.
"Inventory," Burt replied. "Why are you so grumpy?"
Kurt sighed as he slipped Kit into his high chair and started pulling things out of the fridge for breakfast. "Moving is stressful, I had a date that ended poorly, and I'm nervous about starting my new job today. Take your pick."
"Tell me about the date," his dad said as he made faces at a delighted Kit. Kurt had propped the phone up across from the child so Burt could see him. "Was he a jerk?"
"That's the thing. He was amazing," he replied as he whisked some eggs in a bowl. "It went great until he found out that I had a child."
"Oh, what a smart boy you are! Look at you clap your hands! Kurt, he is brilliant! He saw me clap my hands and he did it too! Genius!"
Kurt fondly rolled his eyes at Burt's excitement and poured eggs into the pan. It made him feel a little guilty for moving Kit so far away from him and Carole, but he reminded himself that he was doing the best he could and giving Kit a good life.
"Well, son, I'm sorry about the guy. Some people aren't meant to be fathers. You can't blame him for being honest with you."
Kurt prepared Kit some milk. "I get that, but it seems like when guys find out I have a kid they either treat me like I have leprosy or like I'm trying to trap them into being my baby daddy."
"It's tough being a single dad. I remember when you were a kid. But you'll find the right guy. You just have to be patient."
"I know, I'm just lonely. I love my life and this little guy," Kurt said as he smacked a kiss on top of Kit's soft hair. "But it would be nice to meet someone."
"You will," Burt said matter-of-factly. "He's out there."
Kurt grinned at his father as he placed his plate and Kit's at the table. "Thanks, Dad. I hope so." He blew on Kit's eggs to cool them. "How's Carole?"
Burt's smile faded slightly. "She's better. I wouldn't say great, but she came for a walk with me through the neighborhood yesterday. She misses you both. We need to come visit soon."
"Definitely." Kurt put Kit's plate back down and he started to eat fist-fulls of the eggs happily. "Just as soon as we get settled in our routine. I will have the guest room all ready."
"Sounds good. Good luck today on your first day of work! Or is it break a leg?"
Kurt laughed and wiped Kit's mouth. "Good luck is fine. Thanks, Dad. Give our love to Carole. Want to say goodbye to Grandpa, Kit?"
Burt waved and squealed in delight (which Kurt was unaware he could do) when Kit waved back.
As usual, Kurt felt much better after talking to his father. He looked at Kit who looked back at him with his wide chocolate eyes. "You ready for our first day, kid?"
Kit broke out in a smile that was like sunshine and showed Kurt his egg covered hand. "Edds Dada!"
"I'll take that as a yes."
Vogue headquarters was already bustling when Kurt arrived. He had dressed in one of his most impressive ensembles, a matching tweed jacket, waist coat, and trousers over a cream shirt with a peach tie. Clustered at his jacket pocket were three tiny gold brooches, scissors, a heart, and a Chanel bottle. He had carefully styled his hair and donned his coordinating boots. He looked good and felt good. He was ready.
When he arrived, the receptionist greeted him warmly and escorted him up to his office. It was bigger than his old one back in New York. Open and airy, the space was painted shades of cream and beige with floor to ceiling windows running along the wall overlooking the city. Gold fixtures added a nice touch to everything. His things were stacked neatly along one side of the room, ready to be unpacked. Pleased, he nodded at the blank walls ready to be filled with ideas and mock-ups. His heart flipped at the thought of starting this new venture.
A knocking at his open door caused him to turn and see a pretty blonde woman smiling at him from his doorway.
"Hi! I'm your new assistant Brittany Pierce." She stuck out a hand which he took with a warm smile.
"It's very nice to meet you, Ms. Pierce."
"Please call me Brittany. Nice to meet you too, Mr. Hummel. Can I get you anything before we unpack all of your things? Coffee? Tea? A black cat?"
His eyebrows scrunched at the last thing. "Beg pardon?"
She winked. "For good luck on your first day! Oh! Also, I know where all the secret tunnels are."
Kurt regarded her warily for a few moments, but she just grinned widely. "Okay... Anyway, please just call me Kurt."
"But you haven't been short tempered or rude?" She replied with a frown.
Kurt laughed at the joke, but she just kept frowning. What was going on here? Was she messing with him? "No, it's my name. Kurt."
Her frown deepened. "I thought your name was Mr. Hummel?"
"Yes. Kurt is my first name."
"Ohhh!" Finally she smiled and Kurt felt relief. She had just misunderstood. "I had a past life too and I'm pretty sure I was a unicorn which would explain why they are extinct!"
Kurt blinked at her. Was she crazy? She had to be trying to screw with him. He took a deep breath. "How about we just unpack my office?"
"Sure! I'll get started with your books." She bounced over to the boxes and enthusiastically began pulling things out.
He gave her back a confused look and began sorting out his desk. She was a little odd, but seemed eager. This would be fine.
"Thanks for having lunch with me," Cooper told his brother as they started pulling their food out of the bags. They were in Cooper's dressing room after filming all morning. "I feel like I haven't seen you in forever."
Blaine raised his scarred brow up at Cooper. "I literally just saw you two days ago. Stop being dramatic."
"That was work," Cooper insisted as he swirled a fork in his spaghetti. "I mean like really see you. Like hang out. Let's hang out! Tonight!"
Blaine narrowed his eyes at his brother. He was acting suspicious. "I was going to work on a song—"
"What? A new song! You are writing again? Oh, that's just great Blainey! I knew you could do it! Congrats! Can I hear it?"
They stared each other down for a few beats.
"You talked to Tina and Sam didn't you?"
"What?" Cooper acted affronted. "I can't just want to hang out with my baby brother? Wow. How rude."
Blaine didn't say anything, just folded his arms.
"Ugh! Fine!" Cooper threw down his fork. "They might have mentioned that you were up all night doing something secret in your room that I'm really hoping isn't a sex thing as I'm saying this, but I don't think it is!"
Blaine smiled. He couldn't help it. Cooper was just so infuriatingly meddlesome and he wanted to hug him and strangle him at the same time. Of course they had been talking about him. He guessed he really didn't blame them. "I was up writing this song." He smiled wider when Cooper fist pumped and looked down at his food. "I couldn't stop. I guess part of me was afraid that if I stopped, I'd lose it and who knew when I'd get it back. I didn't want to go back to being a loser."
"You're not a loser," Cooper said immediately. "You had a hard time after someone hurt you. It's understandable."
Blaine shrugged and picked at his food. "I guess it's just hard to believe when you've been told different all your life."
Cooper set his fork down and scooted closer to Blaine. The younger smiled up sadly, his mouth trying to go up in a pathetic half-attempt. Cooper put an arm around his little brother. His smile wasn't much better. "Believe me, I know. But we are proof that our parents were wrong. Look at us! I'm a successful actor and devilishly handsome in the prime of my life! And you are almost as successful and handsome as me!"
Blaine snorted at that, but let his head rest on Cooper's shoulder. "I'm definitely not successful."
"You have a hit song."
"That I don't have credit for."
Cooper shook him a little. "Who cares? You'll write a better one and be able to rub it in that traitor's face! As for being a loser, screw our parents. We don't need them. We only need each other." He rested his cheek on top of Blaine's head.
Blaine nodded, making Cooper's head sway with his. "You're right. I promise I'll show you my song as soon as it's done. You can tell me what you think."
"And I'll be honest, but gentle." He squeezed Blaine's shoulders once again. "Now are you going to tell me about your date?"
Of course they told him about that. Blaine let out a deep sigh and pushed Cooper off of him. He picked up his fork again. "No."
With a whine, Cooper reluctantly scooted back over to his own food. "Why? I tell you about all the women I sleep with."
"And I've asked you not to."
"Blaaaaaine!!!! Tell me!"
"Why do you need to know?"
"I don't need to know," Cooper replied as he stabbed his pasta. "I want to! Pleeeeeeeeease???"
"Fine," Blaine replied as he shoved a bite in his mouth and tried not to grin at his brother's puppy dog eyes. "But you will not meddle or interject yourself in any way."
Cooper gasped. "Wow. Really? So I can't care about you? I can't make sure you're safe? I can't take care of you or help you out or—"
"Oh my god," Blaine rubbed his forehead. "You know what you do. Remember that waiter I was dating? You kept going to the restaurant he worked at and annoying him."
"That was a coincidence! I really liked the food!"
"What about the guy who worked at the grocery store?"
"I needed groceries!"
"What's your excuse for the fireman?" Blaine fixed him with a knowing smile.
"I care about fire safety, Blaine. It's not a joke to me."
Blaine just shook his head. Cooper grinned, showing off his teeth.
"If I tell you about him, you can't bother him."
"Your lack of faith in me wounds me, little brother," Cooper pouted.
Blaine gave him no sympathy. "Promise."
"Fine," Cooper scoffed. "I promise that I will not be the best wingman ever and talk this guy into dating you even though I am the expert on you and have nothing but your best interests at heart and love you more than anyone else. Your loss."
Blaine ignored his brother's passionate speech and tossed his fork down. He wiped his hands on a napkin. "There's not much to tell. I met him the other day. He was really nice, fun, gorgeous, and funny. We went on a date. It was going super great until I found out he has a kid. I told him it wasn't for me and that's that. End of relationship. Over before it began." He picked up his fork and ate another bite. He finally looked up at his brother who was just staring at him. "What?"
"That's it?" Cooper said in disbelief.
"Uh, yeah?" Blaine bounced his shoulders and raised his eyebrows. "What?"
"What's wrong with him having a kid?"
A harsh laugh scraped out of Blaine's throat. "I don't want a kid."
"Yes you do."
"Since when?" Blaine couldn't wait to hear this.
Cooper's eyes thinned. "You always have! You used to carry around that babydoll every where when you were six! I remember because dad made fun of you for it and mom told him to shut up because then you left her alone."
"I was six, Coop." He scooted his food away. He suddenly wasn't very hungry. "I've changed my mind since then."
"But you love kids!"
"Sure, they're cute, but I don't want one of my own! Look, I really really liked him and I could see myself with him long term, but I'm not screwing up a kid's life. I don't exactly have the best example on how to be a good parent." He rubbed his tattooed arms and wouldn't look at his brother. "It's best for everyone if we end things now before he realizes what a disappointment I would be. It's too much responsibility."
Coopers hand settled on top of Blaine's. He looked up into his brother's sad blue eyes. "Blaine, I love you, but you're being stupid."
"Wow. Thanks."
Cooper shook his head. "I would totally believe you about the kid thing if I didn't know you. I think you're just letting this fuck with your head. You would be a great dad, but I doubt this guy is asking you to be that. I mean, you went on one date. I think you owe it to yourself to see how it goes. Especially since you go on this great date and all the sudden you are writing music again?" He gave his brother a I'm-right-and-you-know-it eyebrow wiggle.
Blaine shook off his brother's hand. "I know what I'm doing. I never want to hurt a kid or give his dad false hope. It's better for both of us." He stood and threw his trash away. "I'm going to ask that you respect this."
"Blaine—"
"No, Cooper. Don't."
Cooper sighed and showed in palms in surrender. "Fine. But there's another guy I think you might like—"
"Not really looking right now," Blaine said as he opened Cooper's door. "I want to focus on writing music."
The door shut behind him and Cooper scrubbed his face in his hands. He cursed his parents, a daily ritual. Maybe Blaine would get out of his own way so he could be happy for once. He deserved that at least. His hands caught his lips as they slid down and they popped back into place as he brought them to his chin. A smile creased his face as he got a great idea. He promised he wouldn't talk to whoever this other guy was, but he didn't say anything about Kurt Hummel! He had connections to the guy and he could try and get him to ask Blaine out. Something about him made Cooper think they would be a cute couple. He texted Dylan and told him to send him Kurt's contact information to him. This would be his best idea yet!
"Brittany!" Kurt seethed as he set the final picture frame up on his desk. "I have asked you thrice to stop hanging my awards in the shape of a penis!"
The assistant twisted from her perch atop the step stool, wielding the drill. "But then how will people know you're gay?"
He rubbed his temples with two fingers. "I don't know, maybe because you arranged all my books in rainbow colors or because I date men? I'm also a fashion designer."
Brittany glanced at him with reproach. "Mr. Hummel, you shouldn't perpetuate stereotypes. You can design and be straight."
Kurt twisted a scrap of bubble wrap in his hands until it crackled. "Why don't you go get me some coffee please," he said as calmly as he could through gritted teeth.
"Okay! Be right back!" She hopped gleefully from the step stool and out the door.
With a deep sigh, Kurt sunk into his office chair and straightened his pictures on his desk. He had three: one of himself with his father after he graduated high school. One of Finn holding Kit and Carole hugging his arm. All of them had wide grins on their faces. The third was just of Kit he had taken around a month ago in New York at the park. He loved this picture. It had turned out so good even though he just used his phone.
Kurt picked up the gilt frame and studied it. That reminded him of his date with— No. He shook his head. He wasn't going to think about that. It was done and Blaine wanted absolutely nothing to do with him or his son. And that was fine. He stuck up his chin. He had no idea what he was missing out on. Kit was the best.
"Um, excuse me." The voice coming from his doorway was a soft and warm English accent.
Kurt looked up sharply and was greeted by the sight of a tall, blond man dressed very well in a dark tailored suit. It was pretty basic, but classy. He was detailed, but not a big risk taker. Careful.
"Hi," Kurt said. "Can I help you?"
He eyed Kurt with appreciation before seeming to recall why he was poking his head in. "Right. Uh, is Brittany here? I was told she was helping you today."
"She is," Kurt replied. "She's my assistant. If I don't fire or murder her before the end of the day." He muttered the last sentence.
The man stepped in, hands in his pockets. "You're Kurt Hummel, right?"
Kurt stood and replaced the picture of Kit before reaching over his desk and shaking the man's hand. "That's me. I'm sorry I don't know your name."
"Adam. Adam Crawford, but please Call me Adam." He smiled warmly. "I work in this division as well. It's so nice to meet you."
"It's nice to meet you too," Kurt said, indicating he should sit in one of the comfortable chairs opposite his desk. He himself sat in his desk chair. "Everyone has been so welcoming."
Adam sat and took in Kurt's office. "Oh yes. We are like a big family here. I hope you feel at home."
"Oh I do." He sat back in his chair and crossed his arms. "I'm liking California more than I thought I would."
Adam nodded and an awkward silence followed. Kurt was scrambling for anything to say, but Adam beat him to it. "Is he yours?" He was gesturing to the picture of Kit he had been holding when Adam first walked in.
Kurt nodded fondly. "He's my son. I mean, he's technically my nephew, but I've adopted him."
Picking up the frame, Adam grinned at it. Even if he was just sucking up to him, it wouldn't have been difficult to smile at that picture. Kit was adorable. Kurt felt his chest swell with pride as Adam cooed over it. "He's so cute! How old? Two?"
"One actually. He's tall." Kurt found himself leaning over and showing Adam the picture of Finn, Carole, and Kit. "Here's another. He was about three months old here."
"Aww." Adam studied the picture. "His other father?"
Kurt blinked. "Finn? No! I mean, technically yes… He… It's my late brother. His father." A lump in Kurt's throat grew sore as he held back the emotion. He hoped to be able to talk about it without crying or getting upset one day, but he still wasn't quite there. He knew from his experience with his own mother how it would get easier. Better no, but easier.
"Single dad then?" Adam set the picture back down with reverence. When Kurt nodded, he gave Kurt a sad smile. "That's tough. You're very brave. My sister is a single mum and she's fantastic. My nieces are six. Twins." He held up his phone and showed Kurt his wallpaper which was a picture of himself with two identical girls mid laugh as they sat in front of a cake. "This is their birthday party."
Kurt felt relief at that. So he really did like kids and wasn't just feigning interest. "They are very pretty."
He nodded and looked at the photo for a second before sliding it into his jacket pocket. "I try to visit as much as possible, but they're there and I'm here."
"It's tough. I bet she's glad she has a brother like you."
"Here you go Kurt!" Brittany made her reappearance right at that moment holding a mug of what Kurt was praying wouldn't be weird, but his morning and afternoon with Brittany didn't really give him much confidence. She saw that Adam was in the room and shot him a apologetic look. "Sorry, Mr. Crawford! Didn't know you were going to be here or I would have brought you something."
Kurt took the cup with thanks and Adam stood, smoothing down his jacket after buttoning it. "No, it's fine. I'm neglecting my work. Brittany, I just wanted to tell you I found that report. I'll email it to you. Kurt." He turned to him and Kurt smiled. He looked a bit nervous. "I just wanted to say once more how excited we are to have you here." He gave Kurt a flirty wink. "I look forward to working very closely with you."
Kurt raised his eyebrow. Was he flirting with him? Wow, this was a good week for Kurt Hummel! "I look forward to that too. Fair warning, I'm a bit bossy, but I won't make it feel too much like work." There. It was just flirty enough without bordering on sexual harassment. He really hoped he wasn't mistaken.
"Well, I for one won't really mind being under you." Adam said, eyes glittering and sliding down his body. Yup, Kurt was pretty sure he didn't imagine that. "I'll see you in the meeting later. Afternoon, Brittany."
"Bye!"
After Adam left, Kurt felt like he needed to cool down. But first, he was going to have to fire Brittany. She was going to make everything a pain in the ass. He couldn't have that ruining his work flow. He sipped the coffee she gave him and almost died.
"Brittany! Oh my god!"
The assistant turned to him as she was sorting through a stack of files. "Yes? Is it too hot?"
"No!" Kurt's eyes nearly rolled back into his head. "This is… This is the best damn Mocha I've ever had in my entire life! Did you make this?"
She beamed. "You like it? Aw thanks! Yeah, see, I was going to my business classes and I saw a rat and I'm pretty sure it was trying to get me to follow it, so I did. Like, it looked at me. I ended up on the wrong side of campus and attended this culinary seminar and they were doing lattes and I found out I'm actually pretty good at it."
Kurt blinked. "Alright. Who am I to question you when you're doing god's work? Let's get ready for that meeting."
"So I can stay?"
Kurt turned to her. "What? I didn't say I was going to fire you out loud did I?"
Brittany laughed and handed Kurt the file she found. It was one he had been looking for. "I just got the feeling you didn't like me."
Kurt took another sip and it was just as heavenly. "Fix my pictures and you can stay. But only if you make this-" he held up his cup, "happen every day."
"You got it!" She practically skipped over to the picture wall and started fixing them.
Kurt cuddled his cup. "I never have to go to Starbucks again!"
Blaine scribbled down more lyrics. Okay, so this was turning into two songs. Two! His hand began to cramp and he finally let himself take a break. Filled sheet music lay strewn around him and his guitar was by his feet. He was stretched out on his bedroom floor where he had been since he got home from work. He dropped his pencil and flopped onto his back, staring up at his light fixture.
It felt so good getting back to his old self. Something was coming alive in him again and he was so excited. He glanced over at his desk and looked at the pictures he had printed out of Kurt standing in the sea. His intention had been to print them out to send to Kurt because they really were cool and then he could delete them off of his phone. Wash his hands of everything. However, something made him tack the pictures up on to his wall instead. The ones he had taken of the two of them were still on his phone. He just couldn't delete them yet. They looked so good together, but it was his own face that stopped him. It was old Blaine again. There was light in his eyes.
He shook his head. He wasn't stupid. He knew he kind of had a crush on Kurt, but he would just have to get over it. So what if meeting Kurt had somehow opened the floodgates and he was kind of his muse? Honestly, that would probably just creep him out. He would send Kurt the photos at some point. Until then, he would work on getting over the guy and focus solely on his songs.
Scrubbing the heels of his hands in his eyes, Blaine saw little dots from the light bloom. Then he was remembering how Kurt's mouth felt on his. So right. He remembered how soft his lips were. Demanding. The way he pulled Blaine closer to him and gripped his shoulders. In the alcove how they pulled at each other and kissed…
Kissing in the middle of the ocean and then making out on the beach was one of the most romantic/erotic moments of his life. He caught himself smiling and rubbed it off.
This was silly. It was one date. He needed to get a grip. They had completely different lives. Kurt was somebody; he wasn't. Kurt was a father; he would never be. Screw Cooper. Maybe he secretly did want a kid. Sure, the thought brought warmth to him, but he couldn't subject a kid to what would most assuredly be the worst parenting the world had seen, right after his own parents of course. What he was doing was the right call.
Blaine rolled over onto his stomach. Maybe he should call that number that guy slipped to him at the bar the other day. Get Kurt Hummel out of his system. He groaned. His heart just wouldn't be in it. This was so dumb.
"I'm dumb." He said to his carpet. Then he hummed. "Hmmm." He pulled a half empty page over and began writing again. "That makes me a dumb human…"
He spent the rest of the evening writing, his love life forgotten. Eventually Sam and Tina came home from work and made him eat dinner, but then he went right back to work.
Kurt shuffled in the front door and dropped all of his work on the side table next to it. He wouldn't have thought that he would collect this much work on his first day, but he had been wrong. He supposed he would have gotten more done, but everyone there was so friendly. They stopped by his office all that afternoon saying hello and welcoming him.
He tiredly traipsed into the living room and found Marley quietly doing her homework while Kit sat in the floor with his blocks spread around him. He was mostly just chewing on them, but oh well.
"Hey," was all Kurt could get out before Kit scrambled over to him and started shrieking a chorus of, dadadadadadadada.
Kurt picked up the boy and kissed his cheek before accepting the open mouthed, slobbery one Kit gave him in return. "Hi, sweetie. How was your day? Hey Marley. Everything go okay?"
The nanny smiled and began to gather up her books. "Oh, it was fine. He missed you, but we had a good day. How was your first day?"
Kurt hitched the squirming child up higher. "Oh, mine was good. Just long. So you think this is going to work out? If you need more time for school, let me know."
She shook her head. "No, between my online classes and night classes, I think this will be perfect. If I get stressed out, I'll let you know."
"Okay. Thank you. We will see you tomorrow?"
She nodded and slid her backpack on. "Sounds good. Bye, Mr. Hummel! Bye, Kit!"
He waved and Kit immediately copied him. "Say, bye bye!"
"Deepo!"
Kurt sighed. "Are you ever going to talk?"
"Ba?" He held out a block to him.
"Come on. Let's go make dinner."
Later, after Kit was fed, bathed, and put to bed, Kurt showered and drug his work to bed. Everything was all spread out, his laptop open on his lap and glasses on his clean face. He sighed and pulled out a file when he noticed something written at the top. It was a number and Adam's name with a little smiley face. He smirked. Yeah, the guy definitely liked him. Either that, or he was seriously sucking up. They were more coworkers rather than boss and employee. He wasn't sure it would be smart dating someone from work, but the guy was definitely persistent. And cute.
At their staff meeting, Adam had made sure to sit right beside him and jumped to help him anytime he seemed to have a question. Then he found every excuse to touch his arm or shoulder. To top it off, he had apparently given Kurt his number.
So the question was, what did he want to do about it? There wasn't any rules about dating at work, just as long as you signed something. He would only work with Adam directly sometimes. It's not like there would be a huge conflict there.
He did find Adam attractive. He was handsome and dressed well, if a little boring. Kurt could always help him with his fashion sense. He seemed genuinely nice and he loved kids. That was a huge plus. Something held Kurt back though and it had tattoos, a motorcycle, and an attitude. He shook his head. He needed to grow up. Blaine didn't want anything to do with him and screw him honestly. He was just horny and needed to get it out of his system. He should definitely give Adam a chance. He was probably one of those guys who was polite on the outside and kinky once you got them alone. Not that Kurt was super kinky. He thought.
Kurt finally was able to put his relationship woes out of his mind and get his work done. It was way too late by the time he was finished, so he put his work away, set his alarm and tried to fall asleep. He was just so fucking horny. Maybe just really quick before he fell asleep… He started to take his pants off and froze when he heard Kit's cry.
"Fall back asleep. Fall back asleep." He whispered hopefully. A full minute later, Kit was sitting up really crying and he threw back his covers before trudging down the hall to go sing him back to sleep. He himself would sleep at some point.
