WhiteElfElder: thanks for your review, my friend. Paradise is something sought by all creatures. But the path can only be found by wolves. So they have to have a wolf lead the way.
Harrison's POV
Part of him wanted to shift back into his human form. Logically he knew that it wouldn't be in his best interest. While he couldn't access his magic very well he still had weapons in way of his fangs and claws.
The muscles in his legs tensed when his father raised his wand. He was ready to jump to the side he watched every movement the older man-made. There was a sharp movement and warm magic washed over him. It felt like he was trying to coax him into shifting back into his human form.
Harrison growled before launching himself at his father. The man drifted back his arm trying to protect his face as fangs came at him. His fangs sunk into the arm and a metallic taste entered his mouth.
Marvolo growled magic circling around him again, "Harrison let go!"
Against his will Harrison released the arm dropping back onto the ice. Damn family magic. As his father was the Family Lord he had to obey. It was why he tried to avoid the man as much as possible.
"You should know that your magic will react to mine and when necessary obey my orders," commented his father, "This is one of the times it will obey."
He growled low in his throat in response. Wolf or human he had to obey because it was a part of his blood and magic. That wouldn't stop him from trying to get away though.
Malcolm who returned to his human form tried to reason, "My lord, maybe we could talk..." he didnt get any further.
Marvolo snarled outpointing his wand at the older wolf, "Crucio," Harrison shifted to lunge at the other again when he ordered, "Do not move Harrison. This is Malcolm's punishment for not telling me the complete truth. For hiding what you are. So unless you want to share his pain you will stay right there."
He growled but his body would not obey him. There had to be something he could do. Malcolm did not deserve to be tortured for this. He was a good wolf and guardian.
There was a small shift behind him and the quiet crunching of the snow. Turning his head he saw that Quentin was slowly making his way to them. He was crouched low on the snow and had shed his jacket. Trying to be unnoticeable was a good idea and given that Quentin was a squib his father would not notice him. Without magic, his father wouldn't deign him to be worth his notice.
Turning back as his father released the curse. Ignoring the man that was getting into position so his father didnt take notice of his shift in attention.
His father ordered coldly, "Get to your feet Malcolm. Now tell me why you didn't tell me it was my son you were following? Do you understand why I am angry with you?"
Malcolm who had collapsed onto the ice rolled over so that he was on his hands and knees. There was a flash of amber in his eyes but after taking a few deep breaths they were normal again.
He answered, "My lord, I was sworn to secrecy on names. As his guardian, I must protect him and him alone. Even from his own father."
There was a short pause for a moment. Muscles in his father's face twitched the only sign of his annoyance.
More crunching of snow had his ears twitching back. Quentin was close and unless his nose was lying to him, Grindelwald disobeyed. Oh well, that can be handled later. For now, they had to organize a defensive countermeasure. They had to get away from Marvolo.
Marvolo snapped, "Your loyalty should have first been to me. That is what you swore when you took my mark."
"What is sworn in words isn't the same as what was sworn by magic and blood," Malcolm returned lifting his head, "I am a wolf and my loyalty is first to my clan. Now and forever. That is why I am what I am."
There was a half crunch and a shuffling sound behind him. That was the signal that they were ready. Harrison shifted back into his human form. This had better work otherwise they were all screwed.
Marvolo turned to face him and said choosing to ignore the comment made by Malcolm for the moment, "You cannot continue to avoid me forever Harrison. I know that you are searching for Paradise. Many of the world's creatures have gone into hiding for this hope. Or for the fact, they believe that our world is going to end. Is this Paradise real? Or is it just a false hope given to fools? Truly I am curious."
His father ever the skeptic. Humans believed the stories of Paradise were just fairy tales. Just as they believed wolves were extinct. They saw themselves as the top of a now nonexistent food chain. Their world was dying anyone who said differently was blind, an idiot, or both. He had to wonder which category his father currently fell under.
Malcolm questioned, "I thought you believed in Paradise, my lord? After all, why would you bring everyone with you? Most of these wizards would hole themselves up in their manors if they thought the world was going to end."
The two wolves locked gazes for just a moment. Harrison's hand slowly wrapped around his wand. When the others made their move he had to be ready. Even getting one spell off could mean success.
His father began, "I believe that there is something to be sought. Whether it is an actual Paradise or just an illusion remains to be seen. Harrison..."
He didnt get any further as Grindelwald lunged from behind. With that, spells began to fly.
