Chapter 42 : Their Reason (3)
February 1987
"We shall leave unannounced of this premises. Let us make haste as the eyes of the monarch are still not pointed to us!" That was what Doris told of her fellow fairies who have accepted to come along with her.
She have decided to leave Alfheim and make a new home on Midgard, or also known as Earth.
As to why she have decided to do so, it was because of her dissatisfaction about the decision of the Fairy Monarchs, Titania and Oberon.
They have decided to hide themselves on Alfheim, never messing with any humans or factions that gets lost on their lands. They will help the other factions that came to their lands.
She doesn't like that. She was used to the life of causing mischief to the unaware humans. Making their life miserable as she did so.
It wasn't because she was malicious in nature. She thinks it was just a game.
And being used to playing with humans, being suddenly stopped to do that will cause her to retaliate.
She can't really do anything because the two are much stronger than her.
So she have decided to leave Alfheim and go to a place that is hazardous to a fairy like her.
She lives off of Mana. Alfheim is abundant with that form of energy. Earth have a low concentration of it. There are only specific places on Earth which boasts a huge amount of concentration of Mana, but even that is pretty average if it's compared to the Fairy Lands.
So why is she so confident that she can survive on that place and continue her activity as the fairy of mischief?
That is because of the items that she stole on the Monarch's Treasury.
Along with the many Mystical Waters, she also took fifty Fairy Chalice.
The Fairy Chalice is a type of artifact personally created by one of the Sons of Ivaldi. It wasn't stated on their myth because of it's irrelevancy on that age.
The Fairy Chalice's only function is to turn any liquid into a Magical Water that was abundant with Mana. This is essentially the only thing that will make it possible for fairies like them to survive on a low concentration world.
She also took some other items. She manages to take it thanks to the help of her fellow fairies who also follows her beliefs.
For them, being fairies meant being able to do what they want. They will be honest to their nature, which is always playing to their heart's content.
Restraining themselves is basically telling them to stop being who they are.
They won't compromise on this matter. They will find any way to do what they want, just so they can be honest with their nature.
She doesn't like how Oberon and Titania run the Fairy Lands anymore. For her, she thinks of them as cowards who will bow to those humans just because they are numerous.
For her, she will not bend her knees to those humans. She will stay true to her nature as a fairy.
And that's bringing mischief and superstition on the humankind.
"I will not be the same as the two of them. I will create a new Fairy Land, where all fairies are free to do whatever they like!" That was what Doris swore to herself.
Shion and the others are currently looking for Queen Doris. All of them are going out the city of Nishinoomote to get to Doris' current location.
"I didn't thought I will be able to use this tracking spell. I thought it would be impossible in this world." Shion said that in wonder.
She was currently channeling a spell that only tracks fairies. She have knowledge of using a lot of spells because, unlike how she acts, Shion was surprisingly interested on many types of magic.
She have a lot of spells that she knows, and some of it makes it possible to track fairies.
What she is currently using is [Rianú Sióg], a type of fairy tracking spell that she learned on the Royal Library on England, thanks to one of the female knights there who became Aqua's friend.
Shion just learned it due to her academic curiosity. She wasn't even expecting that she can use any spells that will only work on a specific race like fairies.
"It was also surprising that we encountered a fairy in this world. I mean, it was already surprising that we encountered the Fairy Monarchs and the Legendary Dwarves, but that was when we stumbled onto the Land of the Fairies." Ayame pipes up after hearing Shion. "This is the first time I saw a real fairy living in this low concentration realm." Ayame continued with some interest in her tone. "What do you think, Sensei?" Ayame continued as she turned her attention to Choco.
"Maybe that fairy was using a type of artifact that sustains her physical body in this world. The only things I can think of are the Magic Crystals, Demon Steel, or those Magic Saps on the Demonic Realm. Though, it should have already depleted since a long time if that was the only thing she was using." Choco said her theory. "... It can be also that she have an artifact that have the same properties as ours." Choco continued with that.
"... A logical conclusion then." Ayame said with a nod of her head.
"We shall see. I mean, I'm sure she can't use her full potential with just a limited source of Mana, right?" Shion said with confidence in her tone.
While Shion's party are busy like that, Towa and Fubuki also left their room so they could look for them.
"Shion! Rushia! Aqua! Anyone else! Where are you?" That was what Towa was shouting as she looks for them on the streets.
"... Towa, I think you shouldn't shout like that. The crowds are staring at us." Fubuki whispered at Towa's way.
"Ah! Sorry!" Towa quickly apologized to the crowd.
Then they walk around without Towa shouting for their names anymore.
"But where did they go? They should have come back before this evening!" Towa said in confusion.
"Hmm... maybe they are being given the noble treatment with those government people? Or, maybe they are currently in a secret meeting to fight some sort of being that will endanger the world!?" Fubuki said with a bit of exaggeration due to her hyperactive imagination.
"What is this, Anime!?" Towa can't help but throw a Tsukkomi on her way.
Due to Towa telling Fubuki about the Other Side, Fubuki's impression of the supernatural changes. Now she thinks a lot of cliche things are happening due to what she heard at Towa.
There are secret meetings. Hidden sealed entities. And even artifacts scattered throughout this world. There are also different factions moving the society behind the scenes.
It literally reeks of a plot that can only be seen by televisions or light novels.
So it wasn't surprising for Fubuki to think like that.
'... I didn't thought she was genre savvy.' Towa thought with a sweat drop on her cheek.
They roam the city a bit more to look for the others.
"... We have company." Ayame muttered to her friends, causing them to stop on their tracks.
They are currently outside the vicinity of Nishinoomote, just near the forest on there.
Ayame felt some presence closing on them from all directions.
After awhile, the presence shows their appearance. They are surrounding the girls in a circular fashion.
There are fourteen people in total. They are wearing Mithril made armaments with some other materials that was common for the fairy kind.
"So these are her thralls. I didn't thought she will stoop so low as to use humans as her puppets." Shion spat in disgust.
The girls stand closer to each other and look at their assailants who are surrounding them.
"I think we should split up." That was Choco's suggestion to them.
"Are you sure about that, Sensei?" Shion asks while glaring at one of the people surrounding them.
"Yes." Choco replied. "It will take too long if all of us take our time to deal with these guys. That fairy will be able to hide herself from any tracking methods as we busy ourselves here and we will lose our chance to find her anymore." Choco stated her reason to them.
As she said, while stupid fairies won't be able to know that they are being traced, intelligent fairies can easily sense that. And they are fighting a smart fairy so there is a high chance that Doris have a way to hide herself from their tracking spell.
Shion have a lot of spells she learned that can counteract a fairy, but she would lose if she give her enemy time to find their own countermeasures against her. So she needs to be fast to catch her.
Fairies are good at anything related to Mana. Shion prided herself for being good at magic, but she will admit that she will have a hard time if she gives the fairy any time to analyse her.
So she can see the logic of splitting up and letting the others to deal with these people who are blocking them.
"... Okay, I leave it to you." Shion whispered her consent to Choco.
Choco smiled before she turned to Rushia.
"Rushia, let's hold them off while these two take care of the fairy." She said to the green haired necromancer.
"Okay Sensei." Rushia accepted before she turned to the sleeping zombie that Choco was carrying on her back.
While that is happening, Shion quickly created a diversion to take their attention out of them.
"[Lucis]!"
A blinding light suddenly occurs at her words, causing the fourteen warriors to cover their visions with their arms.
While they are distracted, Shion and Ayame quickly passes through them.
"Rise, Crazy Ollie!" The fourteen warriors covering their gaze heard Rushia declaring that so their attention was focused on that direction.
As the light subsided, they now notice that Shion and Ayame was gone. Some of them tried to follow up to the running two girls but they immediately stops after feeling a chill down their spine, like someone was staring at them like a prey.
Looking at that direction, they saw Choco staring at them with an ill intent that was very clear on her atmosphere.
"Try turning back against me and that will make this much more easier." Choco threatened to all their enemies.
Even with these warriors being hypnotised, they still have their combat senses. Well, they only have a combat sense because Doris forces them to fight for her amusement.
Anyway, their combat senses warned them of the danger of turning their back against her. It was screaming at them to always turn their attention to her without their concentration slipping up.
So they trusted their senses and decided to deal with the two girls (plus a zombie) who are being surrounded by them.
When they took their attention to them...
"I'M AWAKE!"
The sleeping zombie girl yelled at the top of her lungs.
"WHAT IS IT!? IS IT MEAL TIME NOW!? NO? MAYBE IT'S TIME TO WATCH ANIMES!?" Ollie continues as she looks around her vicinity. "AH! THERE ARE WARRIORS EVERYWHERE! ARE WE RUNNING FROM THEM? ARE WE A FUGITIVE!? IS THIS ANOTHER WORLD!?" She says in a frantic notion with her eyes wide and looking everywhere.
"SHUT UP!" This causes Rushia to snap. "We are here to hold these guys off." She continues with a much calmer attitude.
"HOLDING OFF! I CAN HOLD A LOT OF THINGS! LIKE THAT ROCK OVER THERE! OR THAT DUMB BELL THAT I SEEM TO HAVE LEFT ON THE HOUSE! OH, AND ALSO RAMEN!"
"I DON'T CARE ABOUT THAT! SO SHUT UP AND JUST BEAT THESE GUYS TO SUBMISSION!" Rushia stops her by yelling at her too in irritation.
"OKAY! I WILL DO IT! I'LL MAKE YOU PROUD!" Ollie replied in a cheery mood.
The fourteen guys didn't care about their banter and just prepared their stances to fight them.
One of the fourteen guys rushes over to them in a sprint.
It's like his movement was the sign for them to move as the other thirteen also move by using their different weapons.
Those who holds range weapons prepared their stances to shoot while those are wielding melee weapons charges at them.
Some of them focused their attention to Choco because they felt she was the most dangerous out of all them. The others will target Rushia and Ollie.
Their plan is to finish Rushia and Ollie while the others focuses on distracting Choco.
"Ten people huh... that was a good way to distribute your forces when fighting someone strong." Choco nodded with a critical eye for their actions. "But, I think your underestimating my students for a bit there." She muttered that last part.
As she finish muttering that, one of the guy, someone who wields two swords, was thrown out of the air.
This is the guy who charges at Rushia.
This guy, before he manage to reach the necromancer, a red blur pass through his vision before he suddenly finds himself flying through the air.
He didn't notice that Ollie quickly manages to get to their position. She also did a really clean uppercut on his chin.
"FLY TO THE AIR!" That was Ollie who yelled that with a cheery tone.
While that is happening, Rushia was already muttering a language that can't be considered human as she watches Ollie protecting her.
What she is doing is chanting the Curses that she will use to inflict negative effects on their enemies.
"... Stop her." One of the guys on the back who was holding a bow says that to the others.
It seems like even in their controlled state, they seem coherent enough to think through their fight.
Choco just glances at it before dodging the many swings that was coming in her way.
'I see, it seems like it wasn't the normal Glamour that I was thinking of. They are under a Flat Hypnotism!' She concluded in her mind.
Flat Hypnotism is a type of hypnotism that makes the inflicted think that what they are doing is logical, even without any context to their actions.
Basically, it's a type of mental suggestion that convinces them that they are doing something normal even though it wasn't like that at all.
This is one of the example. Even though these people are just "Chosen" by Doris on the Army Ceremony Festival, they think what they're doing are right even without any reason to believe that they are doing so. They are just normal humans but somehow they saw Doris as an absolute figure of authority despite being a fairy and she wasn't even native to this island, nor this country.
It is called Flat Hypnotism because the attitude of the inflicted will turn flat. It's like all their personality just vanishes and changes into that of a faceless mob on the street. Someone who doesn't have any defining traits other than whatever was appropriate in the situation.
Just like a flat character.
'To counteract this, we just need to smack them until they got back to their senses. Or, we need to kill the caster.' Choco thought to herself. 'They are wearing armaments that protects them from heavy damages. All of it are magical items made by those fairies. So it will be impossible to even hurt them, much less harm them enough so they can snap out of their hypnosis. Fairies are also immortals so even if we kill the caster, there is no guarantee that these people will get back to their senses.' Choco thought grimly.
The armed guy with a bow shoots through Choco's way, which she just dodges. Then Choco jumps away before she was hit by an overhead smash from a hammer wielding warrior.
The one who was wielding a single sword followed up with a forward stab but he overreaches as Choco sidesteps on his strike. And with a surprising speed, Choco grabs the back of the swordman's helmeted head and uses her power to incapacitate him.
"Gghk!?" The swordsman grunted before he collapses on the ground.
The others who are trying to follow up on their attacks stops before pointing their weapons at Choco while standing a bit on her distance.
'Okay, that's one down.' Choco thought to herself before she looks at the warriors who are still surrounding her.
What Choco did is just a simple application of Mental Shock. She was a type of a demoness that was a relative of a succubus. Succubus are a powerful type of demon who are specialized on dreams and illusions. This includes hypnotism and charms.
Choco was an expert when it comes to black magic. What she was more proficient is the use of magic that relates to the mind.
She can easily cause anyone to sleep and breach their dreams if she wants to. She can also cause untold agony to the people that she wants with just a bit of her magic laced in her voice.
But due to these people being fully equipped with Mithril armaments, so Choco was forced to resort to physical contact. Magic that targets one emotion or mind was more stronger the more the caster was in contact with their target.
Mithril is pretty much nonexistent on this planet. But Fairies can easily make it by the use of their own secret methods. And Mithril are known for it's strong conductivity on Mana and Spiritual Energy. It was also a great defense for magical and spiritual attacks, whether if it targets the physical, mental, soul, or even emotions.
The best material that only fairies can create. It won't be called the "Fairy Silver" if the other races can also create it.
Without their Mithril armaments, Choco was confident that she can easily knock down all of these people.
But because they are wearing something that was personally made by the fairies so she needs to get a close contact to them.
While that is happening, Rushia was just done on her chant and she casted her curse upon all the enemies on her vicinity.
"[Jīngshén Fǔshí]!"
As she stated her curse, all the armed people on their surroundings clutched their bodies in pain.
What she casted is a Chinese curse that causes harm to the soul. It slowly causes the soul to be broken until they die.
Though, she uses it in a half baked way because she doesn't want to kill these people. Also, they are wearing Mithril armaments so she thinks they will be able to resist it, greatly reducing the effect of her curse.
But this type of curse is a powerful one. It can be considered a type of magic that can cause instant death.
Rushia was specialized in the way of curses and magic that uses the Necrotic Forces. Most of her abilities can cause agony or even death. It was even called as a Death Magic due to how most of her spell repertoire only consists of every deadly things.
Necrotic Forces is a type of Nether that was converted into magic. Nether is a type of energy commonly seen on Purgatory or the Afterlife.
Rushia also doesn't care if she manage to kill someone. It was pretty common on the realm where she came from.
But due to being friends with Aqua, she was restraining herself from killing. It was also the case for all of her friends.
They know Aqua still thinks that whatever is happening here are just their delusions working at it's max. So it would be quite a shock if she suddenly saw someone dying in front of her.
So even if they are not used to it, they only incapacitate their enemies since they became friends with Aqua.
Anyway, Rushia's curse manage to hurt their soul. Even with the Mithril Armaments, Rushia's powerful curse manage to penetrate their resistance and shoot through their soul.
This is their first time experiencing something like having their souls harmed. It was like they are being wounded from parts unknown to them.
Only those who are at Rushia's vicinity were hit by her curse, meaning that those are at Choco's side are still unaffected.
So Choco was still focused on her enemies.
"Well, this will be easy enough after Rushia and Ollie is done with those four." Choco said to herself with a clear hint of confidence to her student.
While that is happening, Shion and Ayame are heading fast on the area where Shion's tracking spell was pointing at.
It was deep within the forest near Nishinoomote.
After taking more steps deeper to the forest, the both of them stops.
"This is so predictable..." Shion said in a slightly bored tone.
"Well, what would you expect. We are coming to their den after all." Ayame replied in a casual manner.
What they felt are the invisible traps made by the fairies. These are magical traps that have a variety of effects depending on what the creator of these traps thought of.
Fairies are pretty good at making these kind of things. It would be impossible for a normal magician to detect their traps at a first glance.
But the two are different. They have already experienced a lot of things that can be possibly stated as legendary. These type of traps can be considered common to them.
"Well then, I'll just get to disarming these." Shion muttered to herself before she chanted something under her breathe.
And then, every magic traps in their way were disabled just like that.
What she uses is a simple dispelling chant. It causes an active magic to fizzle out or malfunction itself. So long as she chanted the dispelling chant, any supernatural phenomena that uses Mana will be disrupted or outright jammed in the vicinity of the caster.
"... It seems like you need to continue the dispelling chant. The fairies seems to have made a self-recovering trap even with this kind of environment." Ayame said to Shion with some amazement in her voice.
And it was amazing because a trap made by magic should need an equivalent amount of Mana. If it can restore itself, it needs Mana nearby so it can do so.
This world have Mana but the Mana surrounding the environment is not enough to contain the kind of traps that fairies can make. Each traps that the fairies made can be considered by the mages on this world to be advanced for their age. It also consumes a lot of Mana.
It was already surprising that they see this amount of advanced magical traps in this kind of world. Now it can also restore itself without the Mana on it's surroundings depleting is a lot more surprising.
It was like they came back to their own realm due to witnessing this wasteful usage of Mana.
"... There, the dispelling chant will continue itself for half an hour. I think this is enough time to take care of that fairy." Shion said to herself after using another type of magic so the dispelling chant can continue.
"... Aren't you wasting a lot of Mana by using that?" Ayame said.
"It doesn't matter. I want to surprise that fairy. I am sure she won't expect a magician like me to know this kind of magic." Shion said with a smug expression. 'I just wondered how they manage to make these traps functionable. Do they really possessed a sort of artifact that gives them abundant amount of Mana?' Shion thought to herself in wonder.
Regardless, they move forward deep into the forest as the traps that the fairies made were continuously disabled on their vicinity.
"Queen Doris! That human supporter was defeated by that pink haired human!"
"Queen Doris! Those fun breakers are wiping out our heroes!"
"Queen Doris! Two of those party poopers are approaching our base!"
"This is bad Queen Doris! Our traps are being deactivated one by one!"
Doris was hearing all her fairy accomplices reporting to her in a frantic manner.
She was currently inside her castle made of trees and bushes. It was pretty big though it was hidden by the sight of the humans due to their wards that they made surrounding this area.
This is her personal territory that she made so no humans can gain entry. The wards make it easier for the humans to get lost or even find themselves in a different part of Tanegashima. There are also traps that causes those who triggered it to either be immobilized for a week, cause a high fever on anyone on the trap's vicinity, lose consciousness for a week, cause terrifying hallucinations for three days, or even make them lethargic for a month.
But it seems like their enemies, Shion and Ayame, are just making quick work of their traps. Even their wards didn't do anything because they just come pass through it.
"Queen Doris! They are currently breaching are concealing barrier! This is so bad!" One of her fairy accomplices exclaimed in panic, her arms wildly flailing as she explained that to Doris.
"Don't worry! We shall make a last stand against those humans!" Doris said in a proud manner.
She still didn't notice that Shion and the others are not normal humans. She thought they are just like those people from the Other Side.
Shion's disguise is at the level that even her, an intelligent fairy, can't see through their true identity.
'One of them is busy doing the dispelling chant. So I think we can just take care of that sword wielding girl before we played with that smug looking girl.' Doris thought to herself. 'Also, I still have this Hellspawn as my trump card. So if all else fails, I'll just use it to buy some time for our escape.' She thought with a malicious smile.

So after having my worse time for these last two weeks and just plainly contemplating the meaning of doing whatever I did on that day, I finally manage to kick my lazy bum to writing this again.
Sorry, it was a personal reason and also a useless one so I won't go into details.
Going back to the story, I was planning to make this long (like 10,000 words long) but I lost all my motivation these last two weeks in the middle of writing this. Now, I manage to get back but I forgot what I am going to write so after adding some scenes there, I decided to end this on that part.
... I'll try to update more next time. Sorry about that...
