A/N: Sorry this so long to get out! Anyway, this is kind of in a weird format because it jumps around as far as time goes. The sequel to Sweet as Pain. Also, I know I kept saying that I was going to write the sequel and then the Endgame fic, but I think I'll just put that all in this one. Mainly because it's been five years, so the Avengers are going to be used to Loki by now. Thanks for reading!!
Disclaimer: Nope.
All Loki felt was emptiness. Stuck in a void of sorrow. Despair. Everything was dull and numb, yet everything hurt. He just wanted the pain to stop. "Shakespeare in the park" Tony Stark had been right about that. His life was meant to be a tragedy. Just like one of the Midgardian's plays. "A sorcerer must have control of his emotions. Like a horse, magic will feel and react to your emotions." The first lesson Mother taught him. The clearing around him was destroyed, as if the Hulk had gone on a rampage.
"What help were you in your cell!?"
"Who put me there?! WHO PUT ME THERE?!" In a way, he was glad he had been in that cell. His magic couldn't harm anyone there. He was safe from Thanos and his family was safe from him. Except they weren't. He recognized the creature from tales of the Dark Elves. Weren't those extinct? More lies. They were nearly indestructible. It would kill Thor. Better to let the beast go free and hunt it down later. "You may want to take the stairs to the left." All he had done, all he had lost and sacrificed to save Thor and Thanos won anyway. Thor was dead.
"The Queen has fallen in battle. You have my condolences." He had protected Asgard and Thor, but at what price? A price he shouldn't have paid. Now Thor was dead anyway. Mother, Asgard, brother, even Odin was gone. Father. Bruce walked over to him.
"Loki, we need to go inside." He couldn't. He couldn't leave. He just stared at the spot Thor had disappeared to as if it would bring him back. Every time he lost something, every time he reminded himself not to give in to the pain, Thor was always there. Always there to protect. Thor was always there, even when he wasn't. Now Thor was gone. Dead. Bruce dragged him to his feet, pulling him towards the palace. Thor was dead. Nothing mattered anymore.
Nebula was stuck with someone nearly as insufferable as Peter Quill. Yet she didn't care. Gamora was dead. Her sister was dead. After everything she had lost to protect her sister and Gamora was dead. Both of her siblings, dead. Was her life meant to be drowned in misery?
21 days later...
Loki hadn't spoke since Thor died. All he could see was Thanos snapping, Asgardians falling in battle, the Power stone being used on Thor as he screamed, Thor screaming as the energy of Nidavellir tore through his body and Thor turning to ash. He slept less than ever, in other words, had slept about 7 hours since Thanos came. The ones who were left had stayed in Wakanda. Bruce had argued on his behalf for hours, trying to convince the others that he wasn't going to kill everybody. He couldn't bring himself to care. Thanos had disappeared, so until the titan was found, Loki had nothing to take out his anger on. His anger was dangerous, better to let the emptiness take him.
"I remember that look." His head snapped up at her voice. One of his siblings was alive.
"Nebula?" His voice was hoarse from disuse. He slowly got up from where he had curled into himself on the floor. She had gotten more mechanical parts and her aura was quieter than it had been before. Not quieter. Grieving. Knowing she wouldn't receive it well, he hugged her anyway. She stiffened at the contact before awkwardly returning it.
"Okay, what on Earth am I seeing here? I'm stuck on a ship for three weeks with her and hardly get near her, yet she hugs the maniac that tried to take over Earth?" Loki saw there was quite a crowd behind them, Tony Stark at the fore. He looked much more haggard than Loki remembered.
"I don't recall you living and being tortured by Thanos."
"He tried to kill us!"
"As will I if you don't leave."
"Wait, Reindeer Games was tortured?"
"Now." He had forgotten how commanding she could be.
"Thor's dead."
"As is Gamora."
"We need to find him."
"You know as much as I do. You were in his head."
"The Garden didn't have a name."
A few days later
Thanos was right there, face contorted in pain. The gauntlet lay uselessly at his feet, Bruce, the Captain, the Marvel girl and Natasha were holding him down. Rocket rolled over the gauntlet, revealing the stones were gone.
"Where are they?!"
"Gone. Reduced to atoms." No. That was impossible.
"Liar! You used them two days ago!"
"I used the stones to destroy the stones." No. The stones were loyal to each other. They wouldn't do that.
"My father is many things. A liar is not one of them."
"Thank you daughter. Perhaps I treated you to harshly." At that Loki lost his temper. How dare he still consider her his daughter! A well aimed dagger landed in the Titan's chest. Fatal.
"What did you do? What did you just do?!"
"I avenged my brother."
Back on Earth
Loki found Nebula by the Milano, her expression blank.
"You called him Father."
"It slipped out." Loki sat down next to her, waiting for her to continue.
"This was the first thing he took." She tapped her eye.
"He said I wasn't seeing correctly, and perhaps losing an eye would balance me. He spoke of cleansing, of balancing, of perfecting-"
"Yet he soiled, ruined and tore apart everything he touched."
"So many lives, gone."
"Dead."
"Destroyed."
"And for what?".
"The mission."
"Glorious purpose."
"He always said the only way to balance the universe was to kill half of life."
"Yet, he might as well had killed us all, with how utterly hopeless everyone is."
"Empty shells, every single one of us."
"Broken and lost."
"And he calls this mercy."
"So many years spent trying to hate our siblings-"
"And now we would give anything to have them back." Another silence.
"Why did you do it?"
"Pardon?"
"You must have known what would happen if you interfered. You know just as well as I do that the best way to protect people is to show indifference or hate."
"I did what I had to do to survive." She waited for him to continue.
"I was close to breaking, but if I just pretended to break after so long of resisting, he would be suspicious. I needed a reason to break."
"So you used me."
"Had I not done so, he would have had two Infinity stones."
"Has it always been an act?"
"You are my sister."
"But I'll always be second to Thor. Always second."
"I doubt I am equal to Gamora."
"You were." She left.
Five years later...
Loki and Nebula stared each other down, knowing any sudden movement could cause the other to run and jump.
A soul for a soul. One of them had to die, they both knew that. The only problem was, which one of them would abandon the other? Loki smirked, the projection disappearing as Nebula turned towards the clifftop to see her brother standing on the edge.
"Say hello to our siblings for me, please."
"Loki-" She took a step forward, only for him to move a foot back, leaving it hovering... in midair, over a very high, very fatal fall.
"Don't leave me."
"It seems to be the only thing I'm good for, leaving my siblings."
"That is a lie and you know it."
"Another one of my specialties." Another stare down.
"Sister, you know why I have to do this. It will be okay."
"You're leaving me. Again." He offered a weak smile.
"I am sorry." And then her brother leaned back. ever so slightly, and fell.
Just as he had fallen to them 12 years ago.
Hours later, fighting Thanos for the last time...
Nebula wasn't sure how she did it, but she stole the stones, slipping them into the new spots for them in her arm.
"Daughter, you would betray me?" Pure energy and pain ran through her body. but it was nothing compared to losing her siblings. Besides, the hurt and betrayal on Thanos' face was worth it.
"I. Am. not yo- Your. dau- Daughter. And. I. I wi. I win."
SNAP
The last thing she remembered was Gamora, before she slipped off.
"I never hated you. I hated myself for not being able to hate you." Nebula managed to gasp out before she drew her last breath. She finally could rest and be at peace. It was a foreign feeling, but one that she could get used to.
After the battle...
Gamora was still reeling from what had transpired in the past day. Apparently, she was in the future. A future where she and her sister grew apart before they reconciled, a future where her brother and sister were dead, though, she had already thought Loki was dead, so that wasn't new. A future where she had died. Killed by Thanos for the Soul stone. A future where, for reasons beyond reason, she dated some dork. Nebula was dead.
She wanted to kill something. Her relationship with Nebula was strained at best, but she had never expected to escape Thanos without her sister, causing her to chase her across the universe trying to kill her. How had she been so blind? She knew what Thanos did to her sister and she knew the black hate that plagued her sister's heart, but she had always believed it was directed at Thanos. Not her.
Except it wasn't directed at her, it wasn't even directed at Thanos. All this time, all that hate was directed at herself. She should have seen it sooner. Who knew that Nebula and Loki were so similar? Loki. Both of her siblings, dead. She glanced outside, watching and listening to the rain patter on the window.
Loki was dead. Again. And Thor was alone. Again. One minute, he was with his brother, the next, he woke up and Strange was telling him that it had been five years. So, he comes back, fights Thanos again and learn that his brother is dead, again. Now it was raining. Nonstop, responding to his grief. You'd think it would get easier, Loki dying. But it never did. If anything, it got worse. Every single time he thought he could see a glimmer of his brother, he died.
"Thor?" He hastily wiped the tears as he turned to see Gamora. Not the Gamora he knew, but 2014 Gamora.
"I'm sorry about you sister."
"And I your brother."
"Well, he's been dead before. Only this time I think it might actually be true."
"You seem more mature than I remember."
"Remember?" Right, Loki's head.
"Our brother, he was loyal to you. He hated himself for being unable to hate you."
"There are so many things that I wish I could have done differently."
"I can relate."
So they talked about their siblings. They may have lost their younger siblings, the people who they were supposed to protect, the people who loved them more than their own lives. They talked about how they wished they had seen it sooner. They talked about their own foolishness and how much it hurt to lose them. And maybe, just maybe, Thor thought, he wasn't alone.
A/N: Does this feel rushed? It feels rushed. Well, even if it is rushed, I always aim for emotional, so hopefully I at least accomplished that. Thanks for reading!!
