Question 34: Your house, containing everything you own, catches fire. After saving your loved ones and pets, you have time to safely make a final dash to save any one item. What would it be? Why?
They were fast asleep. The fire alarm went on. Blaine woke up in a jump and shook Kurt:
"Wake up."
"Hmm. Hit the snooze button. I'm not ready to wake up yet."
"Kurt, wake up! It's the fire alarm!"
Blaine was getting up and searching for proper clothes. Kurt started to grope Blaine's side of the bed. He sat up in a sudden too:
"You're being serious."
"Yes! Hurry up!"
Kurt, being the practical one, began to order him around:
"Okay, do you have your cell and your documents?"
"I was looking for a pair of pants."
Kurt tossed a bath robe to him and exclaimed while making his way to the in suite:
"Put your wallet and phone on the pockets and find yourself some shoes."
Kurt showed up with wet towels and placed his hand on the floor:
"The floor is not warm yet, but probably the smoke will begin to climb up here. Do you have your shoes on?"
"My shoes are on the other room. I'll go get them."
"Put one of mine, we don't know how serious the situation is."
"They won't fit! I'll be right back."
"Hurry! I'll open the door and see how it is outside."
Blaine went to the other room and damned himself for being so organized. All his shoes were inside the closet, and he'd lose some time to take them. Kurt was right – the smoke was filling their apartment. His eyes had some difficulty focusing and everything around him seemed to be spinning. He needed something he couldn't remember. It was important and he couldn't leave without it. Maybe he should lay down. Kurt was calling his name from somewhere. He wanted to scream back to say he was alright. But a fog entered his mouth and he started to cough. He bent down and saw a pile of wedding invitations. That was it! He needed the invitations to send to… someone. It was important that no one missed the wedding… because… because…
Blaine woke up to Kurt's face calling his name and cursing. Kurt's face was flying above him and out of focus, he blinked a few times to rearrange it. Kurt then punched his chest:
"You idiot! I love you!"
Before he could say anything, Kurt had leaned over him and was kissing his mouth. And before Blaine could process all that was happening, Kurt was screaming at him again:
"I could have lost you because of some stupid envelopes and pieces of paper!"
Blaine realized he really did have pieces of paper in his hands. He blinked a couple more times staring at them. Kurt took them from his hands and tossed them on the ground. Blaine was about to protest but a cough left his mouth instead of words. Kurt held his hand and kissed it.
Blaine coughed a few more times before being finally able to say:
"What happened?"
Kurt took a deep breath, calmed himself and caressed Blaine's brow:
"You passed out in our apartment because you went after the stupid wedding invitations."
"I don't remember that."
"What do you remember?"
"There was… there was a fire?"
"Yes. In the downstairs apartment."
Blaine tried to remember something more but all he got was a headache. Kurt was still caressing him. It felt good; Blaine let the sensation take over and closed his eyes to sleep. Kurt's voice called him back to reality:
"Blee, please, don't leave me alone! I'm scared!"
Still groggy, he answered:
"Why are you scared?"
"Because you inhaled too much smoke and passed out. I thought I had lost you for good."
Kurt punched his chest once more.
"Ouch. You're going to kill me now I didn't die?"
"No! I'm making your heart keep pumping even if I have to do it with my bear hands!"
Blaine held Kurt's hand against his chest. Kurt began to cry heavily. Blaine wanted to hug him, but he was trapped someway.
"Kurt, did my heart stopped beating?"
"No. No, sweaty, but mine almost did when I saw the firefighters carrying you out unconsciously."
"Why am I tied down?"
"You're in one of the firefighters' stretchers. They are keeping you under observation."
Blaine tried to sit up to look around, but the bindings confined him. Kurt held him down too:
"Stay still, honey."
"I'm fine now, gorgeous. I love you too."
"Oh, Blaine; I love you so much!"
"Do we still have an apartment?"
Kurt smiled at him for the first time since he had woken up:
"Yes. It's all covered in soot, but all we need to do is clean up. The only thing we lost is the wedding invitation I just tossed in a puddle."
"Why did you do it for again? Are you calling off the wedding?"
"I was mad at the piece of paper that almost made me lost you. Why was it so important to you?"
The words jumped out of his mouth before he even thought them:
"Because of my father."
Blaine was as astonished as Kurt in hearing his words. Kurt laughed:
"I knew I was stubborn, but only now I see you surpassed me. Guess we're meant to be."
"So come here and kiss me."
After the kiss, Kurt went back to caressing Blaine's brow:
"Are you going to call your father?"
Blaine took a deep breath:
"I guess. Maybe after a near death experience, I can put some things into perspective. However, I'd still like to hear an apology from him."
"Let's take one step at a time. We'll call our families to tell them what happened, to say that we're fine and we'll see how it goes."
Blaine smirked at him:
"Won't it mess with your high planned scheme of table sitting if I add my dad to the list at the last minute?"
Kurt poked his tongue out at him:
"Ha-ha. If you're healthy enough to mock me, then you're healthy enough to make the phone call."
"We'll call them in the morning. No need to wake anyone up in the middle of the night. Now come back here and kiss me again."
"Oh, Blaine, I'm so happy you're safe and sound."
"Me too."
