Notes; so ladies and gents this is the very last chapter of this story. In all these months I never thought that I would ever complete this little story but here I am. and what a ride it has been. Since starting this journey in 2018 I didn't know what the future would hold. A lot has happened since then - a global pandemic, writer's block, crippling depression that lasted well over a year and despite all the bad I had a little baby girl.
From the bottom of my heart, I want to say thank you to each and every one of you who insisted I write more and kept me going through everything. Without further ado, I present the epilogue.
After the incident the previous night, both Scully and Mulder made a pledge the next morning that there were going to be no more lies and secrets between them. Mulder had also agreed to go back on the antidepressants and vowed to tell her if he felt a dissociative episode coming on so she could help him get through it.
Months passed by and their family unit only got stronger with each passing day, they had also made date nights a permanent thing despite what happened on their first one. Their love blossomed again and they both realized why they fell deeply in love with each other in the first place.
They were once again at La renaissance de l'amour; Scully was wearing a dark blue satin cowl neck mini dress, which had a small slit in the hem of the dress. The dress fit against her curves perfectly. Mulder was wearing a black suit jacket with a crisp white shirt hugging his chest with the top couple of buttons open leaving a hint of his chest bare. His dark blue Levi jeans pulled the whole ensemble together.
They were sitting at the table when the waiter came over offering them the drinks menu, Mulder picked out a dirty martini while Scully declined and ordered a water instead. The appetizers were first served and eaten and their main meals were soon brought out. Scully opted for a lasagna style dish with a side salad and Mulder ordered his normal burger with fries.
They were nearly finished with their meals when Scully looked over at Mulder and noticed he looked really nervous, he kept running his hands over his pant legs and kept shuffling in his seat.
"Mulder are you ok? You promised if you were ever going to have an episode you were going to tell me," she said softly.
"Yes, I am fine, well… I'm, um…a little nervous..." he laughed shakily, taking her hand into his own and looking profoundly into her deep blue ocean eyes. Seeing the concern in her eyes "it's nothing bad, I promise, I just...I don't know where to start"
"The beginning might be a good idea," she chuckled.
He took in a very deep breath and squeezed her right hand. She squeezed back giving him reassurance and encouragement. "Since the first time we met in that dark dingy office, I thought you were beautiful. You gave me the light of day when no one else would. You kept me on my toes and challenged me at every turn. And you still do," he looked at her and smiled softly.
"And you love it," she laughed and the tension broke ever so slightly.
"That, I do. Anyway, you kept me grounded. We may have not had the best start now thinking back but I think I fell for you that first night in Oregon when you came into my room. I didn't want to admit my feelings back then but I am admitting them now. I loved you then and I love you even more now. When we lost each other I never stopped loving you, and since we met again I know my love for you has only grown stronger. You're a beautiful mother, the mother of our twins. I could never ask for anyone better you are the love of my life."
He used his left hand to grab a small blue velvet box and opened it on the table in front of them both. "Dana Kathrine Scully, would you do me the honour of becoming my wife."
To say she was shocked was an understatement; she looked down at the most beautiful Celtic diamond engagement ring she had ever seen. She looked back at him seeing he was getting more and more nervous at each passing second. He was so adorable, she thought to herself.
"Yes," she happily replied, joy filling her soul, her eyes lighting up her smile reaching from ear to ear.
"Wait, yes…." he looked back at her, shocked.
"Yes, Mulder." She placed both her hands on his lightly stubbled face and kissed him hard. It wasn't just a kiss; it was a life full of the promise of what's to come.
"I also have something to say," she said calmly
"What is it? Is everything ok?" he suddenly sounded very, very concerned.
"Yes everything is perfect, how would you feel about becoming a family of six?"
"It would be amazing, why do you ask?" He looked at her, and her face filled with one of her smirks and she placed her hand on her stomach. That's when it finally hit him what she was saying.
"Are you?" She nodded, and smiled "Twins?" and she simply nodded again. "How far along are you?" he asked simply.
"13 weeks" she hummed back he got out of his chair and fell onto his knees and placed both his hands on her stomach and started crying.
"Hi babies," he said quietly to her stomach. "I'm your dad and I can't wait to meet you. You have a big brother and sister at home who are going to be the best siblings you could ever ask for.
Scully started crying "Mulder get up, everyone is staring" she laughed. He stood up and kissed the crown of her head.
"I can't believe I'm going to be a dad again," he said astonished.
"You're a brilliant dad, Mulder," she replied sincerely.
They carried on chatting the rest of the night and later went to tell Scully's mom about both things that happened on their date. To no one's surprise, she already knew about the marriage proposal as Mulder had asked for her permission to marry Scully. But what Maggie wasn't expecting was that Scully was pregnant again and with twins no less. Talk about a shock to her system, but she was very happy to be gaining a son and two more grandchildren. Maggie loved her family was growing more and more.
As the past 6 and half months went by both of their lives changed for the better. The twins, even as young as they were, were both excited at the prospect of being a big brother and sister. Mulder was happy he was there for every step of the way through this pregnancy and he wouldn't change a thing including the random cravings like pineapple and chocolate, or pickles, mustard and bread sandwiches or even, later on, was whole lemons. Which made him squirm every time she ate one and made her laugh with his squirming.
As the time grew closer Mulder would jump at everything and anything wrong with Scully thinking her water had broken. The one time it did break he thought she was joking but soon realized it was time and he was running around like a headless chicken. When the minutes turned to hours soon there were two bundles of joy in Mulder's arms. Another girl named Emily Louise Mulder and a boy named Axel James Mulder (Aj for short). Both parents were overjoyed with their second set of twins.
Even Melissa had come around to Mulder despite her past reservations about him. He had proven himself and his devotion to her sister in her eyes and they were both in it for the long haul, though they had both agreed they would wait until Emily and AJ were at least one years old before they would get married. This way they could settle in with 4 kids under 5 and get a routine going before they threw a wedding into things…
Mulder went back to work on a part-time basis, he took it slowly at first and vowed never to take on any cases that went too far away from Scully and both sets of twins. The X-Files just didn't hold the same weight as it once did. Due to this and not spending crazy amounts of money on the bureau's dime they were able to extend the office space and hire two more people. Monica Reyes was one of them; she and Scully had become fast friends. Another person to be added to the department was Wilfred Mott; he was a former detective in the New York City Police Department. He was excellent at his job and was successful in helping capture a serial killer known as Rifkin Joel who mostly prayed on sex workers and runaways. Wilfred was tough from the very beginning and he and Mulder didn't always get along at first but soon learned to adapt to each other after Mulder's profile helped both new team members catch a killer.
After a long and eventful talk, both Mulder and Scully came to the conclusion that for the first year Scully would stay home and look after both sets of twins. And just like Mulder she went back to work part-time but not to work for the FBI like her soon to be husband, instead, she went to work as a Doctor for a local refugee hospital for women escaping domestic abuse and she also helped on occasion women who had been hurt or traumatized in tandem with Mulder's cases.
One and a half years later.
Mulder stood next to the priest who in a few moments was about to make him the best man alive by marrying him and Scully. They had somehow managed to convince Scully's local priest to officiate their wedding despite their having kids before marriage.
When he looked around the church pivoting from foot to foot as he tried not to let his nervousness get the better of him. The windows were lovely stained glass each displaying a different story from the Catholic bible. The aisle was full of pink and white Peonies littering every church pew. Mulder turned towards the entrance as soft music started filling the church. First came his two daughters throwing flower petals and confetti down the aisle in their little red and cream dresses. Next came both his sons dressed in small grey suits with a light pink peony accenting them. William was holding Mulder's ring while Aj, despite wobbling quite a bit, was holding Scully's. They were soon followed by Melissa and Ellen who was Scully's maid of honour.
He took a few shaky breaths as he waited for Scully to turn the corner. The music changed and Scully came into view and his breath was taken away, she was wearing the most elegant wedding dress with a lace off the shoulder top with a sheer white slightly puffy skirt with intricate lace details both on the skirt and the train of the dress. She slowly started to walk down the aisle and their eyes locked. He couldn't help but admire his future wife when a small smile formed on his face. Her eyes lit up upon seeing him and returned the smile to match his.
There they stood looking at each other with amazement and awe in both their eyes.
"You look truly look beautiful Dana," Mulder said quietly
"Thank you, you look don't look so bad yourself," she replied with a small chuckle.
They both turned towards the priest as he started their wedding with a simple but beautiful biblical reading. He talked about the meaning and importance of marriage. And then went on to explain how the couple could grow closer to God through their marriage to each other.
"Have you come to offer yourselves to each other, freely and without reservation?" asked the priest
They said 'Yes' in unison
"Will you love and honour each other for life?" he asked again in the same tone as before.
And again they both answered 'Yes'.
"Will you accept children lovingly from God and bring them up according to the Catholic faith?"
"Yes," they both said with smiles across both their faces
"Now we may start the vows" he gestured for Mulder to go first.
Mulder took a few shaky breaths and then began to say "I, Fox William Mulder, take you, Dana Katherine Scully, to be my wife. I promise to be true to you in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health. I will love you and honour you all the days of my life."
The priest nodded at Scully and she began to speak.
"I, Dana Katherine Scully, take you, Fox William Mulder, to be my husband. I promise to be true to you in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health. I will love you and honour you all the days of my life."
"You have declared your consent before the Church. May the Lord in his goodness strengthen your consent and fill you both with his blessings. That God has joined, man must not separate. Amen."
"Amen," the church and both Mulder and Scully repeated all together.
"The rings are a sign of love and faithfulness. The circular shape of the rings represents eternal love. The couple exchanged rings to symbolize the permanent and exclusive relationship they have vowed to be a part of."
They presented a simple gold band to each other and the priest began again.
"This reminds the couple of their love for one another and how it is like Jesus' love for the Church. This also reminds them how they are now examples to others as well as each other now I may declare these two as man and wife. You may kiss the bride".
Mulder took the opportunity to kiss his wife and the older twins went eww and they all laughed.
They spent the wedding reception dancing the night away, each child having a small dance with each parent before both Mulder and Scully had a dance to themselves. As Mulder held Scully against his chest slowly swaying to the music they had chosen he spoke
"I love you Scully" he whispered
"I love you too Mulder" she replied
In this moment and for every moment for the rest of their lives, they truly were happy.
The End.
