This is just a small, filler chapter for you to enjoy. I hope you enjoy it and keep a look out for Chapter Six!
Chapter Five
To Daphne,
I hope that you are keeping well and causing havoc among those doddering old fools. Remind me next time I suggest taking a holiday, to do so alone. Or at least, to not go on holiday with lots of couples and children. To be honest, I'd rather deal with the fools of the Wizengamot than three children under the age of five!
In one of the rare moments of peace and quiet I've been afforded; I had the chance to think about something I noticed about the sessions I sat in on. I know that Fudge is the 'leader' of the traditionalist bloc, but who is in charge when he's not in the session? I noticed that Enola Zabini seems to demand the most respect in his absence, though she barely makes any arguments herself. And who is the 'leader' of the liberal bloc? I don't think I've seen more than two of them in the chamber at the same time. And how has no one ever noticed how any of this before, it's obvious!
Sorry, I didn't mean for that to sound rude, it's just …the more I think about it, the more annoyed I get! And I've only been on the Wizengamot a couple of months, I can't imagine how annoyed you must be!
I should probably go and let you get back to work. I can't hide from Teddy all afternoon, though trust me when I say it's not through lack of trying. I'd forgotten how much energy young kids had.
Yours, Harry Potter.
To Harry,
I'd never thought I'd ever hear someone say they'd rather be in a Wizengamot session than be on holiday. I hate to break it to you Potter, but I think you're doing holidays wrong. You'll have to work on that.
As to your question, no one has ever paid close enough attention to the people on the Wizengamot to notice their behaviours. Everyone is so focused on just trying to be heard that they are blinded to it all. It takes an outsider to notice and fresh blood to bring about change. I'm sure that between us we can work some magic.
It sounds like Teddy just want to help you relax and de-stress. Take advantage of it, when you're back I have every intention of putting you to work on changing things around here.
Enjoy your break, Daphne,
Dear Daphne,
Well, if I'm to be put to work as soon as I get back, then I suppose I should try and relax. I've a suspicion that you're probably right about not doing holidays properly. Maybe that's the next thing you'll have to educate me on.
I'm going to have to find time to meet with other members try and get everyone reading from the same playbook, especially if we actually want to achieve anything, Also, don't think I didn't notice your lack of comment on Fudge and Zabini, I have a feeling that's a story that needs to be told over diner and a bottle of wine.
To be honest, Teddy has been rather brilliant throughout this trip, he's even helped me practice my Wizengamot speeches. He does a marvellous impression of Fudge, though I think the seriousness is dulled somewhat since Teddy can't change his height or voice when he morphs. Imagine Fudges face but with the voice of a seven-year-old …
"What are you grinning at?" Rowan asked his daughter as he joined her in the Wizengamot archive room.
"Oh, it's just a letter from Harry," Daphne told him still grinning as she imagined Fudge holding court in a session with the high-pitched voice of a child. "He's telling me about his godson on holiday. Apparently, he does this impression of-…"
"What are you doing Daphne?" Rowan interrupted with a frown.
"What? I'm just corresponding with a colleague, there's nothing wrong with that," she pointed out with a shake of her head.
"It doesn't look like just colleagues from where I'm standing. Especially considering he's not actually your colleague, is he?" Rowan pointed out cruelly, much to Daphne's shock.
"Wow, thank you for that father," she said with a shake of her head, her disgust at his chosen words clear on her face. "Nice to see you have my back."
"That's exactly what I'm doing, dear. I'm reminding you od the difference between your position and his. You also need to remember that you have other commitments," he added with a pointed look at her engagement ring clad hand that currently clutched a letter from a man that was not her betrothed.
Rolling her eyes, she placed her letter down before folding her arms across her chest. "I'm fully aware of my commitment to Cassius, father. Merlin knows you or mother won't let me forget it."
"Well, you can't keep putting off your bonding forever Daphne. One day you're going to have to put all this behind you and move onto bonded life."
"What if I don't want to forget all this and just hide away like a good little pureblood lady?" she asked as angry tears gathered in her eyes. "There isn't a single person on the Wizengamot that knows more about it than me! Why should I hide away when I could make a difference!"
"You know exactly why Daphne, let's not have this conversation again," Rowan remarked, turning to leave, obviously not interested in that particular topic.
"Well, maybe if you had a spine and stood up for me…"
"I have done what I can to ensure that you will be comfortable for the rest of your life," he turned and told her sharply, an angry frown on his face. "What more do you possibly want?" he asked rhetorically as he left his distraught daughter behind him.
"I want to be free," she tearfully whispered as she once again picked up Harry's letter, her tears falling to smudge his last words to her.
Your devoted servant, Harry.
