"I still can't believe you guys have a fucking dog!"
Alex just laughed at Nicky as she wrapped the leash further around her hand and pulled slightly. She was out taking Angie for a walk and Nicky was joining them.
"Come on, Ange," she called towards the dog, who had stopped to sniff something on the sidewalk.
The pit-bull mix looked up at the call of his name before barking happily at Alex. His tail wagged back and forth rapidly as he began to catch up to where Alex and Nicky stood. He trotted past them as he began to lead the way.
"What's wrong with getting a dog?" asked Alex out of curiosity towards the shorter woman. Angie had been with them for close to two months now. It was very clear to say that he was her and Piper's baby. "You and Lorna have a cat."
"Yeah, but a cat's different. Garfield just sleeps and eats for most of the time. We don't have to do much for him. Half the time, I forget we even have a fucking cat," admitted Nicky with a booming laugh. "But a dog's completely different. It's like having a kid, almost."
Alex's eyebrows flew up at this. Her mother had said something very similar to her the other day on the phone. It seemed like everyone was mentioning how fast their relationship was progressing since they had gotten back together.
It had been five months since Piper had come back into her life in June. It was October now. In fact, their anniversary of five months had been yesterday now that she thought about it. The brunette made a mental note to stop and buy flowers on her way home. They were long past the age where each month together needed to be celebrated and gifts exchanged. However, she thought it would be nice to surprise Piper with flowers when she got home from work.
"I dunno," shrugged Alex. "Piper wanted a dog...it seemed like the right step."
"Man, you guys are pretty fucking serious now, you know that, right?" commented Nicky as she shoved her hands into the pockets of her jacket. "First with Piper moving in with you just after she dumped her fiancé, and now with getting a fucking dog..."
Alex just shrugged again. She didn't know what to say to this. A part of her was pissed off at Nicky for bringing it all up. Maybe under normal circumstances it was a little crazy how quickly things were progressing. But these weren't normal circumstances. Piper was her ex-girlfriend, had been her ex-girlfriend, now was her current girlfriend, life partner; whatever you wanted to call her, she was. The point was Piper wasn't someone she had just met at a bar a month ago. They had a past together, a long and somewhat complex past together. Out of all the people that Alex had been with over her lifetime, Piper had always been the only one she had really truly loved.
And the blonde had come suddenly back into her life after she had spent years of hating and loathing her. But she had snapped back to being important to her after that quick run-in in June. So, yes, maybe things seemed like they were moving quickly to everyone else, but to her, it felt like a normal progression. She didn't think that Piper was smothering her with having her living with her and now with Angie.
It felt normal-all of it. She finally felt like her life was coming back together. She felt like herself again in a way.
"Look, I'm not saying it's a bad thing," continued Nicky as she noted the semi-pinched look on the brunette's face. "I'm happy for you guys."
Alex held Nicky's eye for a moment before her face broke out into a smirk. "Don't get all fucking sappy on me now, Nichols! It's not like we're getting married or anything!"
The smile faded from the brunette's face as she noted the look of wide-eyed amusement on Nicky's face. She knew exactly what her friend was thinking at the moment. It was she who had brought the topic of marriage up and now that she knew, Nicky wouldn't let her live it down.
"Don't you fucking say it!" cried out Alex just as Nicky was opening her mouth.
"Hey! You're the one who said it! Not me!" laughed Nicky. She loved how Alex was suddenly freaking out at just the mention of marriage. She knew that Alex and Piper were probably far away from tying the knot given the events of not too long ago, but who really knew for sure. She never would have predicted that they would move in together or get a dog so shortly after getting back together. She thought that they would have taken things slow after Piper had run out on her wedding, but then again, she couldn't say she had been that surprised that Alex had asked her to live with her. Alex was hopeless when it came to the Chapman woman.
"Look, marriage isn't the worst thing," stated the shorter woman after a moment had passed.
"Don't tell me, you and Lorna are...are you?!"
"It's possible!" replied Nicky with a shrug. All the amusement and teasing was gone from her voice and replaced with seriousness. "I've been thinking about it..."
"Ah, shit! My little horndog Nicky is all grown up!" cried Alex with a shit-eating grin appearing on her face. Nicky from day one had been a player and now to hear that she was thinking about settling down with Lorna just made her smile. Not with only amusement but happiness. "Thinking about marriage!"
"Fuck you!" replied Nicky as she punched Alex hard on the arm. She hated how the tables had suddenly been turned on her and that now she was at the brunt end of Alex's mocking.
"I missed you," whispered Piper as she pulled away from the kiss and met Alex's eye.
"You were gone for only eight hours," replied Alex in a teasing tone towards the blonde.
"Alex!" whined Piper like a child. "Say it! Say that you missed me!" She didn't always come home in such a playful mood, but she was in one today.
"I dunno," murmured Alex. "It was kinda nice having you not here...it was quiet!" She grinned sheepishly at the blonde as she continued to hold her close against her.
"ALEX!"
"Piper!" cried back Alex mockingly, her green eyes gleaming with mischief.
"Fuck you!" whispered Piper into Alex's ear before nuzzling the side of her neck. She kissed her way up her jaw towards her mouth. She wrapped her arms further around Alex's waist as she kissed her soundly.
Alex immediately pushed Piper up against the kitchen island in response. She felt her lower regions tingle as Piper's tongue urgently parted open her lips. Maybe she had missed the blonde a little, she admitted. The brunette moaned into the kiss as Piper's hands slid up her shirt and began to work the clasp of her bra. She pressed her body further against the blonde in response, and her hands grasped onto the edge of the counter, bracing herself as Piper cupped her breasts. She moaned again before sucking hard on the blonde's bottom lip.
"Say that you missed me," murmured Piper in between kisses, her hand sliding down her stomach to the waistband of her sweatpants.
"I missed you," murmured Alex as she kissed the side of Piper's neck. "I missed you so very much."
They continued to kiss and touch against the island until the high trill of the phone interrupted them. Angie, who had previously been asleep on the couch, began to bark loudly.
"I would say ignore it...but..." Alex smiled weakly as she pulled away from Piper. Normally they would just ignore the phone, but Angie was a different story. He wouldn't shut up now for a while.
"I'll get it," said Piper as she made her way further into the kitchen where the cordless phone rested in its cradle. She didn't bother to check the caller display as she picked the up the receiver and answered.
"Hello?"
"Hi there, Piper."
"Oh, hi...Suzy," Piper could help but stutter slightly over saying Alex's mother's name. She had talked to Suzy a few times since arriving on her doorstep back in June, but she still wasn't used to calling her by her first name. She could make out the low tremble of a laugh on the other line. She couldn't help but picture the older woman smiling in amusement in a similar manner that her daughter did.
The blonde looked across the room where Alex was now seated on the couch, stroking Angie's coat. The two women locked eyes with each other as Piper continued to make small talk with Alex's mother.
The brunette smiled widely, watching as Piper talked to her mother. She loved how nervous she'd let herself get with just a simple call from her. Her mother wasn't an intimidating person. Not like Piper's mother was, but the blonde thought differently for some reason.
Piper continued to talk to Suzy for a few moments before passing the phone over to Alex.
"Hey, Ma!" spoke Alex breezily into the phone. She winked at Piper, who looked relieved that she didn't have to talk to Suzy any longer. As she listened to her mother say something on the other line, she continued to study Piper who was mouthing something to her.
The brunette cocked an eyebrow in puzzlement at her girlfriend. She didn't quite get what she was saying to her.
Piper once again mouthed something, gesturing towards the bedroom. She was going to go change out of her work attire.
Alex nodded her head in understanding at this.
Alex was just getting off of the phone as Piper came back into the living room, pulling a sweatshirt over her head.
"Hey! Those are mine!" Alex's eyes fell onto the black sweatpants currently adorning Piper's legs. "Since when are we sharing clothes?!" She cocked an eyebrow as she looked at her girlfriend, waiting for an explanation.
"What?" stated Piper innocently as she pulled down the edge of the sweatshirt and looked down at her legs. "You let me wear your dress once, remember!...and you don't mind when I wear that old band tee of yours."
"Yeah, once, I let you wear my dress because you had fucking nothing else to wear. And wearing my shirt every now and then is fine. But my sweatpants...now that's a whole other matter, Pipes!" explained Alex as she placed the phone down onto the coffee table in front of her. "They're my sweatpants!"
"But they're so much more roomier than mine!" replied Piper sweetly.
"Roomier? Are you calling me fat!?" Alex pushed her glasses up on top of her head and continued to study her girlfriend's face with astonishment.
"I'm not calling you fucking fat!" cried Piper as she swatted at Alex's arm as she came to take a seat between Alex and Angie on the couch.
"Oh, I think you were!" teased Alex as she leaned slightly into Piper, her eyes gleaming. "Just admit it. You think I'm fat."
"Your ass is bigger than mine," replied Piper with a sinister grin on her face.
Alex's mouth hung open in shock at what the blonde had just said.
"Skinny bitch!" she murmured.
"I love your fat ass though," replied Piper as she snuggled up closer to Alex.
"And to think I bought you flowers..." muttered Alex.
"You bought me flowers!?" Piper was genuinely taken aback by this statement. She couldn't remember the last time that Alex had brought her flowers.
"Yeah, I did," whispered Alex as she looked on at her girlfriend. Her amusement from earlier was gone and replaced with seriousness. Leaning forward, she brushed her lips ever so softly against Piper's before pulling away. "But now with you commenting on my ass...I'm not so sure I should give them to you..."
"You can't just tell a girl that you bought her flowers but aren't going to give them to her! That's like telling a child that Santa Clause came but left no presents," replied Piper.
"You can't call your girlfriend's ass fat and expect flowers afterwards either!" pointed out Alex with the slightest hint of a smile on her face.
The two women just studied each other for a moment longer before Piper was pouting out her lower lip and doing that Bambi-thing with her eyes. "Please."
"Fine," huffed Alex as she rose from the couch and went to retrieve the flowers, which she was surprised that Piper hadn't noticed earlier.
Piper couldn't help but smile at her victory. She knew that Alex couldn't resist that look of hers, and she wasn't ashamed to use it to her full advantage to get her way.
"Happy Anniversary!" whispered Alex as she leaned over the side of the couch, placing the bouquet of lilies into the blonde's lap as she kissed her cheek.
Piper's eyes widened slightly as she looked up at Alex. "Anniversary?" She wasn't quite sure what anniversary Alex was talking about. They hadn't celebrated anything before, so she was a little confused. She tried to do the mental math herself, but Alex beat her to it.
"Five months," answered Alex as she climbed back onto the couch. "We've been back together for five months."
Piper could feel her cheeks flush with embarrassment at hearing this. She couldn't believe she had forgotten how long she and Alex had been together. It just seemed like nothing had changed from eight years ago really. Like the five years with Larry had never happened.
"I'm such a fucking idiot!"
"Hey. I forgot too," replied Alex, noting the look on Piper's face.
Piper gave Alex a confused look at this.
"It was actually yesterday...I only remembered today what the date was," explained Alex with a smile. "So technically, we're both fucking idiots!"
"Idiots in love!" chimed Piper as she smelled the perfume of the flowers.
"Fools rush in!" echoed Alex.
"HEY! Those are my flowers!" cried out Piper as Angie who had not been paying attention to the couple earlier suddenly sat up and began to sniff at the flowers. Angie lifted his brown eyes up and studied Piper's face for a second.
"These are mine!" spoke the blonde again, warning the dog.
Angie again just stared at her with those big brown eyes of his before leaning forward and licking her face. He whined slightly like he did whenever he was in trouble.
"You're still not getting them!"
