Chapter 19: Prentiss Gets Shot
After Dr. Hayes checked out Morgan's vital signs, JJ and Reid asked Prentiss and Morgan an important question.
"Will you be our baby's godmother, Emily?" asked Reid.
Prentiss happily gasped, "Guys, I'm so honored! Of course I will."
Prentiss hugged Reid and then she hugged JJ.
"And, Penelope," said JJ. "You're still Henry's godmother, so you and Emily get to share godmother duties now."
"Oh, my God!" cheered Garcia.
"You can teach me how to be a good godmother, Pen," smiled Prentiss.
Garcia and Prentiss hugged each other tightly.
"Actually," said Reid. "We both think that you will be a natural, Emily."
"But," said JJ. "You still have the best person for asking any questions along the way."
"And, Morgan," said Reid. "We've decided to make you both our baby and Henry's new godfather."
"Me?" asked Morgan. "I was so sure that JJ would never ask me to be the godfather."
"And, you would have been right," said JJ. "But, Spence won the argument that we had about you because all of the good things about you outweigh all of the bad things. So, Morgan, will you be the new godfather?"
"Guys," said Morgan. "I would be honored."
Morgan and Reid hugged each other.
"Just remember," warned JJ. "If Henry grows up to be a 'playa,' then you won't have to worry about another team torturing you, Derek. I will kill you myself!"
"Oh, yeah?" said Morgan making a mean face.
"Yeah!" said JJ returning a mean face.
"Come here, Blondie!" said Morgan.
JJ sat down on Morgan's bed.
"You know what?" asked Morgan.
"What, Eyebrows?" asked JJ.
"I love you, Blondie," smiled Morgan.
JJ lost her mean face hearing that.
"I love you, too, Eyebrows," laughed JJ.
Morgan and JJ hugged each other. Prentiss, Reid and Garcia smiled at the two of them.
The following week, Prentiss checked Morgan out of the hospital. The two of them stopped at Quantico to give the BAU family an announcement. In the round table room, Garcia, JJ and Reid each hugged Morgan while Rossi walked in.
"How are you feeling, Derek?" asked Rossi.
"A little better every day," answered Morgan. "But, I'm glad I'm out of the hospital."
Hotch walked in.
"Morgan," said Hotch. "I thought I told you to go home and to get this place out of your head for two months."
"You did, Hotch," said Morgan. "And, I will."
"We just stopped here along the way because we have a family announcement to make," said Prentiss.
"Wait," said Morgan. "Let's give them all a chance to guess what it is."
"You and Emily are engaged?" guessed Hotch.
"Nope!" smiled Morgan.
"Not quite," said Prentiss.
Garcia happily gasped.
"Em is going to have a baby?!" guessed Garcia.
"No, Pen," laughed Prentiss. "I'm not pregnant. Not yet, anyway."
Reid and JJ smiled at each other.
"The two of you have already gotten married," guessed Reid and JJ.
Hotch, Rossi, Garcia, Morgan and Prentiss all looked at Reid and JJ.
"...Yes," surprisingly said Prentiss.
Garcia happily gasped again.
"...We got married in the hospital church this morning," surprisingly said Morgan. "How did you two already know that?!"
"We're both married profilers, now," answered Reid.
"You both showed all of the signs," laughed JJ. "The way Emily was worrying about you while you were missing, Derek..."
"The way Emily asked to ride with Morgan in the ambulance instead of me..." continued Reid.
"The way you both said you loved each other after Derek woke up in his hospital bed..." continued JJ.
"And, we see that both of you are wearing wedding rings..." continued Reid.
Garcia laughed. Prentiss blushed.
"And, the nice way both of you are dressed now?" concluded JJ. "You both look like you're going to attend a wedding!"
Rossi and Hotch smiled. Morgan felt annoyed.
"Payback's a bitch," groaned Morgan. "For this, I'm gonna enjoy profiling the two of you as a married profiler from now on!"
"That's going to be fun," agreed Prentiss.
"Why did you two get married so quickly?" asked Garcia. "We could have set up another family wedding for you!"
"We've both talked about it," answered Prentiss. "There were a number of things. The years we've both wasted not becoming a couple..."
"And those guys who took me," continued Morgan. "We've gotten all of the hired torturers..."
"But," continued Prentiss. "We still don't know who hired them in the first place..."
"And," continued Morgan. "We don't know who they will target next time. Me again, Rossi, Emily, Reid..."
"But whoever they do target next time," continued Prentiss. "Derek and I will face whatever else that they throw at us as husband and wife."
"We've decided to seize the opportunity while we've got it." concluded Morgan.
Prentiss and Morgan held each other's hands while JJ and Reid also held each other's hands.
"With this job," said JJ while smiling at Rossi. "Life is short sometimes."
Rossi smiled back at JJ.
"Yes," agreed Prentiss.
"Congratulations," said Hotch.
"Thanks," said Morgan. "And, once we catch whoever is behind all of this, then we will have another family wedding, Baby Girl! Our moms, my sisters and all of you deserve one!"
"Really?" said Garcia. "Someone will walk Em down the aisle?"
"Yes," answered Prentiss.
"And, somebody will be Morgan's best man?" asked Reid.
"Yes," answered Morgan.
"And, somebody will catch the bridal bouquet?" asked JJ.
"Yes," answered Prentiss.
"And, you two will have a wedding cake?" asked Hotch.
"Yes," said Morgan.
"And, somebody will be crying because you two have gotten married?" asked Rossi.
"That's happening now!" happily cried Garcia. "I'm so happy for you two!"
Morgan and Prentiss group hugged Garcia.
"Okay," smiled Morgan. "We're gonna leave now before Hotch calls security to escort me out!"
"No, wait a minute," said Garcia. "One more wedding tradition is going to happen right now!"
Garcia pulled out an unopened bag of rice and some cups from a file cabinet drawer.
"We all get to throw rice at the newlyweds now," smiled Garcia. "Everybody grab some!"
Garcia, Hotch, Rossi, Reid and JJ scooped up some rice in their cups.
"Pen," said Prentiss. "When did you get that?"
"This?" said Garcia. "It was leftover from Reid and JJ's wedding. I kept it just for you two!"
"But, how did you know that we would get married, Baby Girl?" asked Morgan.
Garcia rolled her eyes.
"Please," answered Garcia. "The way you two were dancing and looking at each other after Em caught JJ's bridal bouquet and Derek caught JJ's garter belt? I knew that the two of you wouldn't make it a whole year without getting married!"
Morgan and Prentiss laughed. Everybody walked outside of the round table room towards the elevator doors.
"Okay, everybody," said Garcia. "Let's give a proper sendoff to Mr. and Mrs. Derek Morgan!"
Everybody whooped and cheered while throwing rice at Morgan and Prentiss while the two of them were walking into the elevator. Morgan and Prentiss laughed while the elevator doors closed.
"They got rice all in my hair!" laughed Prentiss.
"They got rice down in my suit!" laughed Morgan.
Prentiss put her arms around Morgan's neck.
"Well then," smiled Prentiss. "Let's go home and get out of these clothes, Mr. Morgan."
"I like your way of thinking, Mrs. Morgan." smiled Morgan.
Prentiss tapped the parking garage button and she and Morgan kissed each other on the lips.
Two weeks later, Morgan spent the rest of his recovery time helping Reid and JJ build a nursery. Reid was giving Morgan pointers about how to be a good godfather to Henry and the baby. Garcia was giving Prentiss pointers about how to be a good godmother for Reid and JJ's baby. Then Morgan spent some time bonding with Henry in the backyard playing football. JJ asked Prentiss to give her and Henry pointers on chess moves because Reid had never lost a game of chess against either one of them. JJ secretly vowed to beat her Spence in a chess game before the baby was born.
Two months later, the BAU family surprised Morgan with a welcome home party in the round table room on his first day back in Quantico. They were also throwing a baby shower party for Reid and JJ. The BAU team solved Morgan's first case back with them in Wichita, Kansas. That evening, Reid was helping JJ pack up to leave Quantico for her maternity leave. JJ was feeling sentimental while looking around the bullpen. This was the first time JJ had to leave Quantico since the time Chief Strauss sent her away to Afghanistan.
"Well," said Reid. "I think we're ready to go, JJ."
"Yeah," sighed JJ. "It's crazy, but I'm going to miss being here, Spence. This is my second home with my second family."
Reid put his hand on JJ's shoulder.
"You'll be back here helping the team catch unsubs before you know it, JJ," smiled Reid.
JJ tearfully smiled and kissed Reid's cheek. Reid smiled at JJ.
"I love you, Spence," cried JJ.
"I love you, too, Jennifer," said Reid.
Garcia came up to them holding her laptop computer.
"Oh, my God! Oh, my God!" cried Garcia.
"Garcia," said Reid. "What's wrong?"
"We have a family emergency!" answered Garcia. "I just got a call from Bethesda General Hospital. Morgan just carried Em into the hospital because Em has been shot!"
"Emily?" said JJ. "Oh, no!"
"Is Emily all right?" asked Reid.
"I don't know," said Garcia. "The man just said she's been taken into surgery!"
"And Derek?" asked JJ.
"He's not hurt," answered Garcia. "But, he needs us! They both need us!"
JJ and Reid drove Garcia to the hospital. Garcia told Hotch and Rossi what happened over the phone. Hotch and Rossi arrived at the crime scene first and checked it out. Rossi noticed the gunshot burn and the rifle casing from the rooftop the sniper was perched in. The rest of the BAU team arrived at the crime scene. Morgan came to the DC metro police crime scene tape demanding to pass through. JJ told the police that it was okay for Morgan to pass through. Morgan told the team that he and Prentiss were just standing by his truck talking to each other when she was shot. Morgan felt that he was the more easier target for a sniper shot. Because he was carrying Prentiss into the hospital, Morgan didn't see who the shooter was.
Rossi told the BAU team what he found. Hotch had Garcia set up her laptop inside the hospital to collect the most recent security camera feed. Rossi walked Morgan into the waiting room saying there would be 24/7 security outside for Prentiss. There was no update on Prentiss's operation. Garcia came in with her laptop wanting to comfort Morgan. Both Morgan and Garcia declined Rossi's offer for coffee. Rossi left to help with the investigation. Garcia tried to have Morgan sit down next to her, but he refused. Hotch walked in. Garcia walked outside a minute to leave them alone.
"She's going to be okay," whispered Garcia to herself. "She's going to be okay. She's going..."
Hotch told Morgan that he couldn't work the case because he was a witness to his wife's shooting. Morgan begged and pleaded for Hotch to change his mind because of the time George Foyet kidnapped Haley and Jack and then murdered Haley. But, Hotch still refused. He told Morgan that Prentiss needed her husband there by her side right now. Morgan left the waiting room throwing some things off of a hallway table in anger. Hotch, Rossi, JJ and Garcia regrouped in a conference room. Hotch told the team that when Morgan first returned to Quantico, he brought back a clue saying that the Montolo family might have had a hand in abducting him two months ago. Garcia told Rossi and Hotch that she, Prentiss, Reid and JJ had secretly been working to identify whoever abducted Morgan. Reid joined them in the conference room after donating blood for Prentiss.
Garcia checked out the Montolo family tree online. All of the family members were pronounced dead. Guiseppe Montolo's father, Chazz was declared dead in a house fire one week after Guiseppe was poisoned in front of Morgan. Hotch theorized that Chazz might have faked his death so they wouldn't suspect him for this attack. Garcia caught Chazz Montolo leaving the hospital entrance on the security camera footage. JJ had Garcia play back the security camera footage from the time Morgan and Prentiss first entered the hospital. They saw the receptionist in the hallway talking to Morgan with Chazz standing nearby talking on a pay phone. Garcia realized that Chazz was the one who phoned her about Prentiss getting shot. They saw Chazz looking up waving and smiling at the camera after he hung up the pay phone.
JJ went over to the pay phone. She found a piece of paper in the coin return slot saying, "How does it feel? Do you see red? I see red!" In the waiting room, Morgan gave himself a cognitive interview. He noticed Chazz standing at the pay phone while the receptionist was talking to Morgan. Chazz looked homeless, but he was wearing a ring on his finger which meant he wasn't really homeless. Reid came in the waiting room.
"Hey, I've donated blood for Emily," said Reid. "How are you holding up?"
"What have you found out?" asked Morgan.
"I can't tell you that," said Reid. "Hotch ordered us not to tell you anything..."
"I get that you're trying to protect me, but knock it off!" snapped Morgan. "I just wanna know what you've learned."
"And, I understand that you want to help us catch the unsub who shot Emily so he can't do it again," said Reid. "But, you know that Hotch needs us to catch him with a completely dispassionate and unprejudiced point of view."
"Don't give me that!" said Morgan. "Husband to husband: If JJ were shot instead, you would want to go out and catch the shooter just as badly as I do!"
"Actually," said Reid. "If JJ were shot instead, I would trust the rest of you with catching the shooter for us. I would want to stay by JJ's side throughout her whole ordeal. Just like JJ stayed by my side after I was shot in my neck. Just like JJ and I stayed by each other's sides during the times Will, Maeve and Gideon were murdered. JJ and I are a team, Morgan. We love each other. I give JJ strength when she needs it and JJ gives me strength when I need it. JJ and I have always needed each other and we always will need each other. Husband to husband: Emily needs you, too. She would want you right here by her side when she wakes up. Just like you stayed by Emily's side when Doyle staked her. Just like Emily stayed by your side when you woke up from being tortured two months ago. You needed her strength to help you get through what happened to you. And, Emily will need your strength to help her get through this when she wakes up."
Morgan lowered his head.
"I know," said Morgan. "You're right. I'm sorry. Thanks for helping Emily with the blood donation."
"You're welcome," said Reid. "You two were lucky. I...I mean because Emily was shot very close to a hospital."
"That's what gets me," said Morgan. "If the unsub wanted to kill Emily, why would he do it near a place where she could be saved?"
"Maybe he didn't want to kill her," suggested Reid.
Hotch and Rossi came in telling Morgan that Chazz Montolo shot Prentiss and then called Garcia. Morgan realized that Chazz blamed him for his son, Guiseppe's murder and that Chazz wanted him to know what it feels like to possibly lose a family member.
JJ remembered Rossi saying, "If they threaten one of us, they threaten all of us!" when Garcia was a hitman target. JJ chose to get Morgan alone in the break room to show him the pay phone note before she told the team because she didn't agree with Hotch taking Morgan off of the case. Morgan read the note and he recalled himself being put in the ambulance two months ago. He also recalled himself carrying Prentiss into the hospital tonight. Morgan told JJ he didn't know what the note meant. JJ told the team about the note and then confessed that she had told Morgan about it. Hotch went straight to Morgan asking him again what the note meant. Morgan still claimed that he didn't know. Morgan told Hotch that the doctor was calling him and he left the waiting room. Reid walked JJ into the break room alone.
"How are you holding up?" asked Reid.
JJ put her hands on her pregnant belly.
"We're both doing fine, Spence," answered JJ.
"That's good," said Reid. "But, I'm talking about Emily, JJ. I haven't seen you looking this upset since the time Garcia was shot."
"I don't want to lose her," tearfully admitted JJ. "Not now! I've lost Roz! I've lost my second baby! I've lost Will! I can't lose Emily, too! I love her, Spence. It feels like we've just gotten her back into our lives and then this happened! I don't want us attending her funeral for real this time!"
Reid took JJ's hands into his hands and he looked into his wife's tearful blue eyes.
"We won't," said Reid. "Emily said it herself. Hankel tried to kill me, but I'm still here. Battle tried to kill Garcia, but she's still here. Doyle tried to kill Emily, but she's still here. The 3 of us are living proof that the unsubs don't always win. Emily is Morgan's wife now. And, we've asked her to be our baby's godmother. Emily has so much to live for, JJ. She will be all right."
JJ looked into her husband's hazel eyes and she just knew that he was telling her the truth. JJ and Reid hugged each other tightly.
"Thank you," tearfully smiled JJ.
Dr. Hayes told Morgan that they were successful in removing the bullet from Prentiss. She was going to be okay. Prentiss was moved into recovery. Morgan went into Prentiss's guarded hospital room. He looked at his wife lying unconscious in the bed. Morgan hadn't felt so upset since he thought that Doyle had murdered Prentiss five years ago.
"I'm sorry," cried Morgan. "It should have been me! Not you! It should have been me! And, I'm so sorry!"
Morgan kissed Prentiss's forehead and he lowered his face into his hands crying. The BAU family were all relieved to hear that Prentiss would be okay. JJ kissed Reid for him being right about Prentiss. Garcia hugged Rossi while feeling happy that she was also right. Dr. Hayes came back into the conference room asking them where Morgan was. Hotch had Garcia check out the hospital entrance online. The security camera footage caught Morgan leaving the hospital two minutes ago. Hotch, Reid and Rossi ran downstairs to the hospital entrance to see that Morgan's truck was gone. Hotch phoned Morgan.
"Hotch," answered Morgan.
"Where is he, Morgan?" asked Hotch.
"He's not gonna stop!" said Morgan. "You, of all people know how I'm feeling right now!"
"Yes, I do," said Hotch. "That means you need to come back or tell us where Montolo is!"
"I can't do it, man!" said Morgan. "I can't let anyone else get hurt!"
"That's not your call," said Hotch.
"Goodbye, Aaron," said Morgan.
Morgan hung up and he tossed his cell phone out the driver's window. Garcia couldn't track Morgan without his cell phone. 10 minutes later, Morgan stopped the truck. Morgan pulled out his gun and he walked into a house with a red front door looking for Chazz. Inside, Morgan saw some surveillance monitors focusing on the hospital. One monitor was showing Prentiss in her room. Another monitor was showing the rest of the BAU family regrouping in the conference room. Chazz pointed his gun at Morgan's head claiming he had hired help in the hospital waiting for his order on the phone to kill any to all of Morgan's family. Chazz made Morgan disarm and drop his gun.
The BAU team theorized what Chazz's "I see red" clue meant. They caught Chazz walking to a red line bus stop on the security camera footage. But, they observed Chazz walking past that bus stop instead of stopping to wait for a bus.
"Morgan's never called me, 'Aaron' before," said Hotch. "He said I knew exactly how he was feeling. Morgan compared Emily getting shot to Foyet attacking my family and murdering Haley. He also said that I didn't take myself off the case when Foyet tried kidnapping Haley and Jack in my old house."
"Do you think that Chazz Montolo is hiding in Morgan's house?" asked Garcia.
"Would Montolo be as obvious as Foyet?" asked Rossi. "Would he really hide himself in Morgan's own property?"
"Four properties," said JJ.
"JJ?" said Hotch.
"When Morgan was abducted," explained JJ. "Emily and I were alone talking about him. Morgan once told her that he owned four properties because he was trying to make a change for the greater good."
"Yes," said Reid. "Morgan told me that when he's not kicking down doors he's smashing up walls because he was working out his frustrations after 9/11 happened. He was rebuilding houses all around DC."
"Yeah," said Garcia. "Morgan has rebuilt eight properties now. He moved himself into one of those properties a year ago. But, that house isn't red!"
"Does Morgan have those other rebuilt properties listed online, Penelope?" asked Rossi.
"Yes, sir," said Garcia. "I'm bringing all of them up now..."
The BAU team saw that one of the seven properties had a red front door in the online photos.
"Oh, my God!" said Garcia.
"Garcia, send us the address and coordinates for that house," said Hotch.
"Already sent!" said Garcia.
"Dave, Reid, let's go," said Hotch.
"Uh, Hotch?" said Reid. "Maybe I should stay here. As much as I want to help you save Morgan, JJ might go into labor any time now. I think that my place is here with my wife right now."
"Awww," warmly said Garcia.
"JJ?" said Hotch.
JJ smiled and kissed Reid's cheek for his love, concern and honesty.
"Go," ordered JJ. "Bring Derek back here so he can be with his wife, Spence!"
"You heard the boss, kid," said Rossi.
"Thank you," smiled Reid.
"I'll watch Jayje until you return," smiled Garcia.
"Thank you, Garcia," said Reid.
"Let's go," said Hotch.
Reid, Hotch and Rossi got into an SUV and left the hospital. JJ and Garcia went into Prentiss's hospital room. She was awake and sitting up in her bed reading her medical chart.
"Emily," smiled JJ. "Welcome back!"
"Oh, my God! Em!" cheered Garcia.
"Hey," weakly said Prentiss.
Garcia happily kissed Prentiss on her cheek.
"How are you feeling, Emily?" asked JJ.
"Like I've just been shot!" groaned Prentiss. "Where's Derek? I thought that he would be here."
"Uh, he's getting you some flowers," lied Garcia.
"Uh-huh," said Prentiss. "He went after the old guy who shot me, didn't he?"
"Yeah," admitted JJ.
"Wait a minute," said Garcia. "You saw him?"
"Briefly," answered Prentiss. "After I was shot, I looked up and I saw an armed old man up on a rooftop before Derek picked me up to carry me into the hospital."
Garcia pulled up Chazz's payphone video shot on her laptop screen.
"Is this him?" asked Garcia.
"Yeah," answered Prentiss. "He's the one who shot me!"
JJ phoned Hotch.
"JJ, you're on speaker," answered Hotch.
"Hotch," said JJ. "Emily's awake and she's just identified Chazz Montolo as her shooter."
"That's great," said Reid.
"Thank you, JJ," said Hotch.
JJ hung up. Prentiss sighed.
"I don't know whether I should kiss Derek for caring so much about me or to wring his neck for not being here by my side," said Prentiss.
"Then you really do love him," smiled Garcia.
"Yeah," admitted Prentiss. "I really do love..."
Prentiss gasped. She quickly grabbed a barf bag and she threw up in it.
"Oh, no!" panicked Garcia. "She must be having a side effect from getting shot! I'll get the doctor!"
JJ grabbed Garcia's arm.
"Penelope, wait," said JJ.
"What?" asked Garcia.
"I don't think Emily has anything that...9 months won't cure?" smiled JJ.
Prentiss took a napkin to wipe off her mouth.
"...Em?" asked Garcia.
"Yeah," blushed Prentiss. "You're not the only pregnant agent anymore, JJ! I'm pregnant! The doctor just confirmed it. I was trying to tell Derek that I might be pregnant just before I was shot."
"And the baby?" asked Garcia.
Prentiss put her hands on her belly.
"The baby is fine," smiled Prentiss.
Garcia and Prentiss happily hugged each other.
JJ smiled saying, "Congratula..."
JJ suddenly gasped and she started doing her breathing exercises while holding her baby belly.
"Jayje?" said Garcia.
"JJ?" said Prentiss.
"Uh, guys?" winced JJ. "My water broke!"
Garcia used the wheelchair from Prentiss's hospital room to wheel JJ into the hospital's maternity wing. She pulled out her badge wallet.
"Help!" cried Garcia. "I have an expectant mother here who needs help!"
A receptionist stood up saying, "Ma'am?"
"This is Mrs. Jennifer Reid, FBI," explained Garcia. "I'm Penelope Garcia, FBI! We were visiting a colleague in this hospital who was shot tonight and Jennifer suddenly went into labor! So, I brought her here!"
A doctor came up to Garcia and JJ.
"I'm Dr. Kiyomura," said the doctor. "How close are the contractions, Jennifer?"
"Uh, in the last 5 minutes?" winced JJ. "Pretty darn close!"
"We need to take her into the delivery room stat!" said Dr. Kiyomura. "Where's your husband?"
"Spence?.." groaned JJ. "I sent him out!"
"I'll call her husband back here right away, doctor," said Garcia. "You just take care of her!"
Chazz held Morgan at gunpoint playing Russian Roulette with only two bullets in his gun with the barrel pointing at Morgan's forehead. Morgan knew that Chazz wasn't bluffing about shooting him dead. But, Morgan realized that Chazz was bluffing about his calls to hired help on the landline phone. Morgan rebuilt that house so he knew there was no landline installed in it. Morgan attacked Chazz when he fired one of the bullets. Chazz was knocked down. Morgan picked up the gun and pointed it at Chazz. Chazz wanted Morgan to put him out of his misery. Chazz even put his forehead on the gun barrel. But, Morgan refused to pull the trigger. Reid, Hotch and Rossi came into the house. Hotch and Rossi cuffed Chazz and escorted him out to the SUV. Garcia phoned Reid.
"Garcia?" answered Reid.
"Reid," sighed Garcia.
"You're on speaker, Garcia," said Reid. "Your timing is impeccable. Morgan is safe and we've arrested Chazz Montolo."
"How's Emily doing, Garcia?" asked Morgan.
"Em is awake," answered Garcia. "She's just as mad at you as I am, Derek! She needed you here by her side and you just left! But, this call is for Reid! We're so lucky that we were already in a hospital!"
"Garcia, what are you saying?" asked Reid.
"Spencer," said Garcia. "JJ's gone into labor! I've taken her into the maternity wing of the hospital! Both of you need to get your little butts back here and be with your wives! Garcia out!"
Garcia hung up and she closed her eyes.
