The memories between Amunet and her loved ones had been coming randomly and in waves over the past few weeks. Ardeth was doing much better and we were still watching the ruins of the ancient city. That's where I was when he found me, sitting on my horse watching the city alone.
"You've been distant." He told me simply. I looked out at the city for a moment in silence before looking back to him.
"I'm fine, Ardeth." I told him.
"I've known you for some years now. What is wrong?" he asked me. We were silent staring at the ruined city.
"I've been having dreams." I told him. He just stared out into the city, not saying anything and waiting for me to say something to him. "Memories. Amunet's memories."
"Imhotep's sister." He said and I nodded. "Ramses' lover."
"Yes. Once I received my lovely past life's memories I got a brother and a lover all in one." I said annoyed. "I haven't ever had a dream of the man. Just Imhotep and Anck-su-namun."
"Maybe the Gods believe you are not ready for those memories." He suggested.
"Maybe. How would they know anyway? I'm ready to know who I'm supposed to be with according to them." I told him.
"Are you?" he asked me and I gave him a look. "Are you truly ready to know your soulmate?"
"You do realize when you say it like that it's a very big no, right?" I asked him making him laugh lightly. "Why do they get to decide anyway? Why can't I?"
"Because we are human and they know all." He said.
"You don't make this thing easy, do you?" I asked. "I'm scared." I finally confessed.
"Why?" he asked me.
"I'm supposed to fall for a random guy I meet on the street instead of someone I'm actually close to. Someone I actually know." I said freaking out a bit. "Is it supposed to be love at first sight or…"
"Calm." He told me and I started taking deep breathes. "You'll know when it's time."
"Why are you so calm?" I asked him. "This could happen to you too, you know?"
"We are instructed to accept our memories once they come to us." He told me. "Some are harder than others."
"Like Imhotep's sister?" I asked him.
"I suppose that would be a hard life to accept." He said and we sat in silence again.
"He was good." I suddenly said. He looked at me confused. "Imhotep was good before something darker happened. He fell in love with Anck-su-namun, he was happy just being with her even in secret, but something happened and he changed. They changed. Secrecy wasn't enough for them anymore."
"What happened?" he asked me.
"I don't know. I haven't seen that far yet." I told him. "Whatever it was. It was dark enough to change a good man into the creature we fought against." We sat in silence once more just watching a city that held the monster we fought so hard against.
I stood at the celebration talking with someone who had taken an interest in me. He'd been attempting to gain my affections for months but I wasn't interested in him. Another had caught my eye as well as every woman in court.
"Lady Amunet, you are looking as lovely as ever." He said and I smiled politely at him.
"Thank you, Lord Ammon. That's very kind of you." I said. "How is your family?"
"They are doing well. My mother is helping my sister prepare for her wedding to Lord Seth." He told me happily.
"I'm glad. They seem to be a very happy match." I told him and he nodded his agreement.
"There is another match my parents wish for very much so." He told me and I smiled at him. "High Priest Imhotep." I turned and saw my brother walking up to us and my smile widened.
"Brother. What brings you to your corner?" I asked him.
"Amunet. Ammon. What are you talking about?" he asked us with a false smile on his face.
"We were speaking of his sister's upcoming marriage." I told him.
"Lord Seth and Lady Gamila seem very happy together." He sad and we looked at the happy couple standing together. "I understand you parents are arranging a marriage for yourself, Lord Ammon."
"Yes, Lady Farida is one they wish to my intended." He told us.
"I'm very happy for you, Lord Ammon." We turned to see the Prince and Princess walk up to us and bowed our heads.
"Prince Ramses. Princess Nefertiti. An honor." Lord Ammon said as we stood straight once more.
"Priest Imhotep. I'm surprised to see you here." Ramses said.
"I am here because my sister wished to attend the festivities." Imhotep said motioning to me. "Allow me to introduce my sister, Amunet."
"An honor, Prince Ramses." I said smiling up at him.
"I knew Imhotep had a sister, I just did not know you were she." He said and I raised an eyebrow.
"Forgive my rudeness, but why are you insulting us?" I asked him. My mouth had gotten my in a lot of trouble, and now it might just lead me to my grave.
"I did not mean to be insulting to you or your brother. I'd only seen you in passing and I did not know you were the sister of one so close to my family." He told me.
"I see. I apologize for my words then, Prince Ramses. I hope you and your sister enjoy the evening." I said before my brother escorted me back home.
