Clare stood waiting what felt like hours but really only a minute or two had passed since she had told her mother she was pregnant and she was trying to read her mother's face but all she got Helen was just standing there. "Mum?" Clare speaks up.
Clare's mum clears her throat "How far along are you?" She asks her daughter as she picks up the pan to pour on the plates.
"Around 14ish weeks" Clare responds nervously she prays her mother would be supportive when she knows her mother has grown.
Her mother nodded "Okay, I'm going to be supportive no matter what" she walked over giving a hug.
"Thank you mum I know this isn't what I had planned" Clare took a seat at the table as her mother followed suit.
"I know sweetheart and we can talk about it after dinner and invite Eli and his mother," Helen explained.
Clare was shocked she thought her mum didn't like Eli "I thought you couldn't stand Eli?" She raises her eyebrow as she starts to eat.
"I've seen the way you both look at each other he loves you and I only want you to be happy both you and Darcy" Helen explains.
"I love him, I can't see myself without him," Clare noded thinking about Eli.
"That's the love I wish I had," Helen admitted.
Clare was curious because she knew her parents divorce hurt her mother. "Wait what you mean?"
"Your father and I marriage was always going to end in divorce we got married young and I got pregnant with Darcy before I got married that's a reason you and Darcy were taught that sex before marriage was a sin" Helen looks aroundt her daughter.
"Now I understand" Clare noded she couldn't believe it her mother was just like her well a few years older than where she was now "I was always afraid to to you about sex and I felt alone."
"I am so sorry I ever made you feel you couldn't talk to me" Helen takes a hold of her daughter's hand.
The two talked all through dinner Helen eventually called Cece over and would be here any moment. Clare sat on the sofa and she checked her phone. She got texts from Eli, Alli and Jenna. She would reply later since the door went.
Clare's mum walks to the door opening up to a green-eyed boy and an older blonde woman with the same face features "Cece and Eli come in" Helen steps aside.
"Thanks for inviting us Helen, our kids got to think a lot about this" Cece steps in the house taking off her leather jacket.
Eli rolls his eyes at his mother as he sneaks over to Clare "Sorry for the sudden appearance my mum made me" he sat next to Clare kissing her cheek. "By that I mean I thought our mother's were just going to have a talk over wine or something" He quickly adds.
Clare chuckles "It's fine just weird our mothers getting along so nicely" she looks at Eli. She could remember one time her mother and Cece disagreeing over the fact Helen thought Cece was way too laid back and how Helen too strict oh how times have changed.
"I know" Eli chuckles in agreement leaning back on the sofa as he has his arms around Clare's shoulder "Next we know they go brunch together" Eli jokes making Clare giggle.
"They are both going to spoil our child so much," Clare smiles, realising that her and Eli would have two incredible grandmothers."
"I just know my dad took him to our first MCR concert" Eli shakes his head.
Clare sticks her tongue to tease "She will prefer Rihanna."
Eli playfully put up his hands in defeat "I surrender" he laughs.
Clare was about to say something when Helen and Cece walked over "Mum Cece."
"We need to have a talk" Helen explained as she and Cece stood in front of their kids they definitely would be mother in laws in the future.
"Okay, first thing first, are you still going back to NYU in autumn, Eli?" Cece asks her son as she crosses her arms.
"Well Clare needs me when the baby gets here so I don't know" Eli admits.
Clare looks at Eli "I can't let you do that Eli, you have been dreaming about going to NYU and you got an opportunity."
Eli knows Clare has a point but he wanted to be there to support Clare and their baby "I know but the baby."
"We will figure something out, it's us." Clare looks at Eli.
"You both know how hard it is to raise a baby especially in another country" Cece adds.
Helen nodded in agreement "Maybe you both should stay here until the baby grows a bit and you need the support we are all here for both of you."
Clare and Eli look at their mums as the older women go on as they glance at each other silently agreeing to get out of there as Eli offers his hand which Clare gladly took as they both got up and headed out.
Helen notices "Hey where are you both going we are not finished" she crosses her arms.
"We just need to get out be back later" Clare calls out as she was already out the door already with Eli following behind her.
"One decaf for you" Eli places a cup in front of Clare as he sits in the chair in front of him. They were at that point finally able to have a conversation without their mothers who obviously have more experience with motherhood but they needed to figure it out themselves.
"Thank you" Clare Sips on the coffee clearing her throat before she spoke "sorry about what happened at the house."
Eli took one of her free hands and squeezed it lightly "No need to apologise and sorry about my mum too" he chuckled which made Clare laugh.
"Well on the Brightside the baby won't be here until around Christmas I think so we have time to sort everything out" Clare looked at him.
"I'll find us somewhere to live before the summer ends I promise" Eli holds her hand still.
Clare smiles when she notices a "help wanted" sign "You're still looking for a job right?:"
"Yes I am but it is hard finding one for uni students" Eli sighs but Clare's eyes were on a sign.
"The Dot looking for help" Clare looks back at Eli.
"I'll go ask at the counter I'll be back" he got up from the chair going up to the counter asking for a job application and coming back.
"I hope you get it" Clare smiles as Eli starts to fill out the form.
