Chapter IV:
:The Voices in the Night:
On a cool night under the light of a full moon, Avatar Korra lies quietly in her bed. Despite the sounds of the shutters banging in the breeze. In the hallway all was quiet, when suddenly a shadow runs by in a flash. Korra shoots up from her bed awake just as a Chi Blocker crashes through her window. The Avatar was alerted, then from the sliding doors two more Chi Blockers crashed through the sliding doors standing in a battle stance.
Korra throws a fire kick towards the three opponents, followed by fire fists which the Chi Blockers moves swiftly around the room to avoid. One tried to kick her in the head and Korra retaliates firing fire fists at them. Using this distraction the other Chi Blocker rolled in and planted multiple nerve punches in her back. She cries out and is forced to the ground.
She's dazed and weak, then emerging from the ever darkening shadows. Was Amon himself, he looked down on his downed opponent.
"After I take your bending away, you will be nothing." He said as he reached his hand out to a terrified Korra as his hand drew ever closer….
"AAAAHHHHHH!" Korra shot awake with a traumatised expression.
Suddenly Kamala was startled and fell out of bed, quickly standing up in a karate stance with enlarged fists. "WAH W..H wha… What happened?!" She said with messed up hair and her eyes shut.
Korra looked with panic as she took deep breaths and looked around the room with sweat dripping off her face. Thankfully there were no Chi Blockers and no Amon what so ever.
"N..nothing. Sorry Kamala." Korra said with her head in her hand.
Kamala rubbed the sleep out of her eyes and sat on Korra's bedside. "You okay Korra?"
"I..I'm okay I just had a bad dream." Korra admitted as she felt a sudden lick on her hand, it was from Naga who lay at her side as well.
"Its okay Naga." Korra assured.
However Kamala knew everything wasn't alright. This was the second time Korra had a nightmare and she knew who it was about. A night ago when they went to rescue Bolin from the Equalists and finding Captain America and Iron Man, they met the Equalist leader Amon. However, they also discovered the terrifying revelation that he can take away a persons bending permanently which would be right on AIM's Christmas list. Kamala could see this had affected her friend more than she realised.
To comfort her friend she gave her and Naga a comforting hug. "Its gonna be okay, I've got your back." She said and Korra returned the embrace.
The following Morning:
Early the next morning, Tenzin was up early ready to head out to the city. Since learning of the threat that Amon truly poses the Republic City Council called a meeting to discuss the matter.
As he headed out into the courtyard he heard some grunting and clanging metal sounds. He went over to the yin and yang courtyard, and he found it was Steve Rogers who was up early and throwing his shield around at the trees and catching it in his hand. Steve made a double flip and threw the shield at several trees and it bounced off both before returning to Steve who caught it with one hand. He was sweating with exhaustion but thanks to the Super Solider serum coursing through him he could recover quick.
"Most impressive." Steve looked and saw that Tenzin had been watching him for a few minutes now.
"Oh good morning Master Tenzin, I hope I didn't disturb you." Steve said apologetically.
"Oh no it's perfectly fine Steven, I was up early anyway." Tenzin assured. "I'm heading to City Hall to meet with the council."
"Regarding the recent events with Amon?" Steve knew instantly.
"Yes, given what Korra and Kamala learned at that rally it's clear these Equalists are more dangerous than we realised." Tenzin said. "I know this is a lot to ask but, can you tell Korra I want her working on her forms today?"
"Of course I'll let her know." Steve nodded and with that Tenzin bowed and left to find his Sky Bison Oogi.
City Hall:
Within the main council room of city hall, the representatives of the city council were gathered. Along with Tenzin were representatives from the different nations. Next to Tenzin was an elderly water tribe representative, next to him was a man from the Earth kingdom, and a elderly Fire Nation woman representative. Next to her was another representative from the Water Tribes. He was a young man with long brown hair tied in several wolf tails and dressed in a light blue and white suit.
They were gathered today to discuss recent events, namely Amon.
"There is a madman running around our beloved city, threatening to tear it apart. Benders have been disappearing for weeks, most likely his doing." Tarrlok voiced to his fellow council members before moving to his proposal. "We need to create a task force whose sole mission is to find Amon and bring him to justice."
"Absolutely not. A move that aggressive would only further divide benders and nonbenders." Tenzin disagreed, he knew Tarrlok had good intentions but it was always for an ulterior motive.
The Fire Nation representative thought differently. "Tarrlok, I'm inclined to agree with your proposal, but who would even head up such a task force?" She said skeptically.
"It would be my honour and privilege to accept such a duty." Tarrlok said as he stood up and bowed.
Tenzin however saw right through this proposal. "This is just another one of your ploys to gain more power, isn't it?"
"All I'm trying to do is help." Tarrlok innocently denied the accusation. "Think back, forty-two years ago, Republic City was threatened by another dangerous man. Yakone." He then pointed to Tenzin in particular. "Your father wasn't afraid to deal with him head-on."
Tenzin felt rather offended that he even dared to bring his father into this. "This.. is a completely different situation and how dare you compare yourself to Avatar Aang!"
"Amon is not going to stop with the bending triads." Tarrlok said with a deadly serious tone. "Eventually, he will come for all us benders. Our friends, our families." He spoke to his fellow council members. "Vote for this task force and I will stop Amon before it's too late. All in favor?"
He called for a vote raising his own hand. The other councilmen looked at each other, most were skeptical about this however they also knew they had to do what was best for the city. One by one they raised their hands the only one who opposed was Tenzin. By this time he was outvoted and the gavel struck down and Tarrlok looked with a proud smile, while Tenzin remained weary.
Air Temple Island:
As night fell on the island, Korra was working on her air bending forms in accordance with Tenzin's training. Kamala was sitting on the steps near the house with Naga, listening to the radio playing smooth jazz music. Kamala had to admit she was enjoying the music. Just then Steve came over to see how they were doing.
"You know, I never thought I'd hear jazz music on a sacred island for monks." Steve voiced.
"I'm glad you like it so much Cap, and I gotta admit this jazz stuff sounds great." Kamala admitted.
"Hey kid that was a big thing back in my war days it reminded us that in harsh times spirits still looked up." Steve said as Korra was keeping light on her feet with her air bending forms.
Suddenly the radio started sounding off static, but what came out of it next was a shock to everyone.
"Good evening, my fellow Equalists. This is your leader, Amon." It was Amon as Korra stopped her training and listened as did Steve and Kamala. "As you have heard, the Republic Council has voted to make me public enemy number one, proving once again that the bending oppressors of this city will stop at nothing to quash our revolution." Korra continued to listen with fear present on her face. "But we cannot be stopped. Our numbers grow stronger by the day. You no longer have to live in fear. The time has come for benders to experience fear."
Kamala had enough of listening to this, so she switched the radio off with a glare. "Amons got a lot of nerve you know that, he sounds like Tarleton and Monica on one of their holo billboards!"
"Don't let him rile you up Kamala, he's doing this as a means of inviting panic and fear among the benders of the city." Steve voiced. "Its your classic propaganda strategy to inspire his followers something I've seen the Red Skull do many times."
"Well its gonna take a lot more than that to scare us! Right Korra!" Kamala said confidently looking at the Avatar. However she looked petrified in fright with sweat dripping down her face.
"Korra?" Kamala called which snapped the young Avatar to attention.
"Uh what?" Korra finally said.
"You feeling okay?" Kamala asked in concern.
"Yeah I'm fine I just… I need to focus on my training." Korra dismissed as she headed off to get a drink. This left Kamala and Steve looking at each other in concern.
Meanwhile Tony was in the room he'd settled into and was hard at work. He was busy using his repulser glove to weld a piece of metal together. He removed his goggles and looked at what he was doing. Since meeting back up with Kamala and Steve, they knew the other Avengers were out there too, so he was hard at work building a signal beacon. He wired it to his ID card, so it could send a signal to the other Avengers ID cards.
"Okay Jarvis, signal beacon test number ten." Tony said as he took a step back and activated the holo display on his gauntlet. "..comencing now!"
"At once sir." JARVIS replied. Tony pressed a button on the holo console and then in an instant his ID card and device surged into life sending out a small signal pulse.
Tony looked overjoyed, it seemed his signal beacon was working. Then sadly. It shorted out and shut down. He then slumped his shoulders in defeat groaning.
"Probability of finalising your signal beacon has now dropped to 1.5% sir." JARVIS relayed.
"Oh ha ha remind me to check your sense of humour circuits Jarvis." Tony said sarcastically.
"Wow." Said a voice Tony swung round and saw Ikki was wearing the other repulser gauntlet from his armour on her hand.
"Hey careful with that!" Tony warned. "Its very…" Suddenly Iikki pointed the repulser at the wall and accidentally fired a blast from it. Tony ducked out of the way and the blast just blew a hole in the wall.
"Oops I'm sorry." Ikki apologised.
Tony just shook it off. "Ah no problem kid accidents happen." He said taking the repulser gauntlet off her hand and back onto the armour that stood at the right of his bed. "But word to the wise look don't equipment can be very dangerous."
Just as he said that he noticed his helmet was gone. He looked around looking for it. Just then he noticed Meelo was on his bed, he was wearing the helmet on his head.
"It smells funny in here." Meelo said sniffing inside the helmet.
"Young man, could you kindly remove this helmet from your head." Called JARVIS. Meelo yelped in surprise as he pulled the helmet off his head and ran behind Tony.
"I..it just talked!" Meelo said spooked.
"Calm down Meelo." Just then Kamala arrived. "Thats just J.A.R.V.I.S he runs the suit, don't worry he's friendly."
"Wow it can talk?" Ikki said amazed.
"Yes, I am completely self aware, not unlike who was unaware master Meelo was in the room." JARVIS said.
"I'm smart not dense Jarvis." Tony said. Kamala then changed the subject.
"So any luck on finding the rest of our friends?" Kamala asked.
"Not yet kid, no closer than getting my suit back up to one hundred percent, the only progress I've made is only cosmetic." Tony explained gesturing to his suit which he managed to repair the outside and patch up the paint work.
Sadly it was still only operating at half power, and was charged by the make shift dynamo he made in the condemned apartment. It was times like this he had the equipment in the Quinn-jet.
"Plus I am working with limited tech and resources in making a makeshift signal beacon." Tony pointed to said beacon which sparked again.
"Probability now down to 1% sir." Jarvis relayed, to which Tony just sulked.
The Next Day:
The following day the city was alive and at work. Many people were rushing around. At the industrial districts power plant Mako had just walked out after completing another days work. He was tired as he threw his scarf around him, he noticed a rail car was about to leave and ran to try and catch it.
However what he didn't know was a moped was coming in his direction, and it's never a good idea to run out from between vehicles. The rider of the moped was a woman who quickly skidded to avoid hitting him, but it was too late the moped hit Mako who screamed as he was catapulted across the road.
In shock the woman wheels the moped over to the young fire bender as he picks himself up from the ground. "Oh, no! I'm so sorry. I didn't see you." She called as she ran over to him.
Mako was just rubbing his head and was pretty angry at the blind driver of the moped. "How could you not see me? I mean I was ju-juu …"
His angry rant was cut off when he looked at the woman taking her helmet off. She had raven black hair with green eyes and purple eye shadow, she wore a black shirt with a red line down it and on her shoulders was a red gear logo, red pants with black and brown boots. She had flawless skin, and was beyond beautiful, Mako was now more in awe than angry now.
"Uh, I was ... I- I ... wow. I was …" He coughed stammering.
"Are you okay? Did I hurt you? Ugh, I'm such an idiot." The woman said helping Mako to his feet who blushed as she did.
"Don't worry, I'm fine." Mako simply brushed off. "My brother hits me harder than that every day in practice."
The girl took a look at Mako, and just then she recognised his face. "Wait, I recognise you. You're Mako, right? You play for the Fire Ferrets."
"Yeah, that's me." Mako acknowledged acting like a cool guy.
"I am so name is Asami." The girl called Asami introduced with a handshake which Mako accepted. "Let me make this up to you somehow. Uh, how about I treat you to dinner? Tomorrow night, eight o' clock, Kwong's Cuisine." She walked back to her moped.
Mako was rather taken aback, was this girl seriously inviting him to the swankiest restaurant in town. "Uh, Kwong's? I don't have any clothes nice enough for a place that classy."
"I'll take care of that. All you need to do is show up." Asami assured as she placed her helmet and goggles back on. "So ... it's a date?"
"Uh, yeah, I guess so. I'll see you tomorrow night." Mako chuckled with a smile.
With that Asami revved up her moped and continued on her way, she took one final look at the boy she asked out before disappearing from view. Mako himself had a rather dreamy look on his face and a goofy looking grin. Seems he'd just hit the jackpot.
Just next to him was an old man wearing a black and grey suit, with white hair on the sides of his head and dark sunglasses.
"You know something kid, I think you just hit the jackpot, she's a very classy lady." The man named Stan said. However he saw Mako was too love struck to notice. "Enough said." Stan said as he left.
Dusk was approaching and on Air Temple island, Tenzin, his family, Korra, Kamala, Tony and Steve sat down to dinner. Kamala sat next to Korra while Tony sat between Meelo and Pema, Steve sat between Ikki and Jinora.
They all bowed their heads for a prayer. "We are grateful for this delicious food, for happiness, for compassion, and …" Before Tenzin finished his prayer.
"I'm not interrupting, am I?" Tarrlok came into the room bowing in respect. Tenzin looked wide eyed to see his fellow council member and Korra did look in mild surprise.
"This is my home, Tarrlok. We're about to eat dinner." Tenzin said standing up to meet Tarrlok.
"Good, because I am absolutely famished." Tarrlok said while receiving a narrow glare from Tenzin. "Airbenders never turn away a hungry guest, am I right?" He asked as he went to take a seat.
"I suppose." Tenzin said as he sat back down only to receive a slight scowl from his wife to this sudden addition to their dinner table. Tenzin merely shrugged.
It was then Tarrlok took not of the Avatar in the room. "Ah, you must be the famous Avatar Korra." He greeted and Korra smiled humbly. "It is truly an honor. I am Councilman Tarrlok, representative from the Northern Water Tribe." He bowed.
"Nice to meet you." Korra said bowing a greeting. Tarrlok then noticed the girl sitting with Korra.
"Ah and if I am not mistaken this must be your special companion. Its a pleasure to meet you as well." Tarrlok bowed.
"Uh thank you sir its nice to meet you too.I'm Kamala Kahn." Kamala greeted with a similar bow.
"A pleasure Kamala." Tarrlok greeted as he and the girls sat down to dinner. Ikki then leans in to took a look at the councilman.
"Why do you have three ponytails?" Ikki asked then smelling the air. "And how come you smell like a lady? You're weird." Tony couldn't help but stifled a laugh at that and neither could Kamala. Steve just kept a mutual expression.
"Well aren't you ... precocious?" Tarrlok said before turning his attention to Korra and Kamala who were enjoying some rice. "So, I've been reading all about your adventures in the papers. Infiltrating Amon's rally, now that took some real initiative."
"Oh, thanks." Korra said rather humbled. "I think you're the first authority figure in the city who's happy I'm here."
"Yeah cause the first authority figure we met wasn't very uh…well welcoming." Kamala explained.
"Ah you must be referring to our dear chief of police." Tarrlok guessed. "Don't worry, truth be told she's not very fond of me either. But that aside I am very glad you are here Korra, I believe you can put a stop to Amons insurgency along with your companion ah..Ms Marvel if I am not mistaken?"
"Uh yes." Korra said simple and Kamala just nodded wairly knowing that Tenzin had told the council about Kamala so as not to cause a panic.
Tarrlok then turned his attention to the two men in the room. "However if I am not mistaken in infiltrating Amons gathering you had help from these two non benders. Oh how rude of me may I ask your names?"
"Tony Stark councilman." Tony introduced with a nod.
"Captain, Steve Rogers sir." Steve greeted also.
"Ah a captain, I'm guessing your a soldier correct?" Tarrlok guessed.
"Yes sir former soldier actually." Steve simply said.
"Well the fact that two non benders with no power at all opposing Amons ludicrous beliefs is a welcoming relief indeed." Tarrlok complimented. "Much less with ways to stand against them an example by standing with the Avatar, showing that Amons claims are false an example of how benders and non benders can coexist." He said to all of them. "Republic City is much better off now that you've arrived Avatar Korra."
By this point Tenzin had enough of Tarrloks flattery, he knew he was up to something. "Enough with the flattery, Tarrlok. What do you want from Korra?"
In truth Steve, Tony and Kamala were interested to know as well. It seemed that the water tribe councilman was only here to flatter Korra just to get something from her. Tony had seen this move once before, from his old rival Justin Hammer and even more so from Obadiah Stane. Steve was also wary of Tarrlok's intentions too as was Kamala she knew from past experience from Tarleton that when you flatter someone its just a way to get what you want.
"Patience, Tenzin. I'm getting to that." Tarrlok simply said with his hand up and decided to cut to the point. "As you may have heard, I am assembling a task force that will strike at the heart of the revolution and I want you to join me."
"Really?" Korra said quite surprised.
"What!" Tenzin said in equaled surprise.
"Oh boy." Tony said to himself, while Steve was more than surprised to hear this, but didn't like it one bit.
"I'm sorry! You want Korra to join your Anti Equalist task force?" Kamala said in surprise.
"Hm thats a good name." Tarrlok complimented on the name Kamala gave his task force. "I need someone who will help me attack Amon directly, someone who is fearless in the face of danger." Tarrlok said confidently and inspiringly (at least to himself) "And that someone is you. There is also a place for Ms Marvel as well, with her abilities and your friends help we can quash this threat in no time."
Steve on the other hand was skeptical. "Councilman Tarrlok with all do respect, I don't agree with this. Assembling a task force to attack the Equalists would only further divide benders and non benders, and would only encourage Amon to further press his attacks on the city."
"So you suggest we don't attack the Equalists, he's already taken the bending of the Triad, whats to stop him from attacking the family's of benders." Tarrlok simply said in a serious manner. "Is that what you would want on your head captain? Or have you not seen this before in your experience?"
"I am not suggesting we do nothing." Steve argued back as calmly as he could. "And yes I have had experience with this before, and I've learned that every time someone tries to win a war before it starts innocent people die every every time."
"Be that as it may I won't allow this mad man to tear down the city, this task force can help with that." Tarrlok said before turning his attention to Korra and Kamala. "Now would you both like to join."
"Sorry but respectfully no I won't join your task force." Kamala said respectfully. She looked to Steve who nodded in approval.
Tarrlok while surprised then asked the Avatar. "I see and what about you Avatar Korra?"
"Join your task force?" Korra took a moment to think about it but finally came to a decision. "I can't."
To say everyone in the room was completely flummoxed and surprised was an understatement. The most surprised of all was Kamala and Tenzin, because they knew Korra would be the first to jump at the chance of action in a heartbeat. Tarrlok was most taken aback by her answer as she took a sip of her drink.
"I… must admit, I'm rather surprised. I thought you'd jump at the chance to help me lead the charge against Amon." Tarrlok said taken aback.
"Me too." Tenzin said quietly.
"Ditto." Kamala said quietly also.
"I came to Republic City to finish my Avatar training with Tenzin." Korra explained to the councilman. "Right now, I just need to focus on that." Steve and Kamala couldn't help but notice a slight twitch in her voice.
"Which is why this opportunity is perfect." Tarrlok tried to persuade her in a desperate way. "You would get on the job experience while performing your Avatar duty for the city."
"Councilman no offence, but the kid already gave you her answer." Tony said calmly dismissing him. "I think it would be best if you respect her decision, and Kamala's"
Tenzin was the first to nod in agreement with the billionaire philanthropist. "Indeed and I believe it is time for you to go." He said.
"Very well." Tarrlok said humbly as he stood up to leave. "But,I'm not giving up on you just yet." He said waggling his finger before bowing. "You'll be hearing from me soon. It has been a pleasure, Avatar Korra, Ms Marvel, gentlemen."
He then went to leave the dining room but not before Ikki gave one last farewell of her own. "Bye-bye, ponytail man!" She waved.
While all Tarrlok could do was give a slight scowl as he just grunted in distaste to that compliment. While Kamala all but snickered. However at the same time she was rather worried, she knew by Korra's hesitation that something was bothering her and she also knew that men like Tarrlok don't give up until they get what they want.
Meanwhile:
While the inhabitants of the Air Temple were enjoying a traditional meal, Mako was about to enjoy a five star meal at the high classed restaurant Kwong's Cuisine. He looked at the classy building in awe and he was a little nervous, not so much for the date with Asami but rather him a simple man from the street dining in style with an upperclass lady.
He tugged his scarf and looked at his sleeves, he was hesitant but remembered what Kamala said. "Sometimes you just have to take a leap of faith." So thats what he did he went inside where it seems a server was waiting for him.
"Ah, welcome to Kwong's Cuisine, Master Mako." The server bowed.
"Uh, "Master"?" Mako said in mild surprise.
Before he knew it he was dragged into the back room where the server unfolded a decent shirt and put it on Mako. What came next was every grooming method ever known his hair was styled his shoes were polished and was even given smart pants and a waist coat.
Mako had gone from a street boy to looking like an upperclass man. He wore a white shirt with a black under coat with a greyish black waist coat, with black pants and white tipped shoes. His hair was straightened up and combed in a fancy style. However to him there was something missing. The final touch was his own red scarf which he put over his shoulders. The server was about to remove it until Mako grabbed him firmly by the wrist.
"The scarf stays." He said sternly.
"As you wish, sir." The server bowed. "This way please." He then lead Mako into the restaurant area.
When inside if Mako wasn't in complete awe before he was now, he saw how extravagant this place really was. If his brother could see him now he would be dead jealous, he wasn't a street rat for tonight he was among Republic City's finest. The server eventually lead him to the table where his date waited for him.
Asami wore a sleek red coloured dress, with gold hair clips and matching bracelets. He took his seat where a glass of water was handed to him. The two engaged in conversations, which were mostly about Mako's career in Pro Bending.
"I am such a big pro-bending fan. I caught all of your matches this season." Asami said infatuated.
"All of them? Wow. Honestly, I wish there were a few you hadn't seen." Mako tried in a charming attitude trying to be cool about it.
"Oh, don't be ridiculous, you're amazing. I can't wait to see you play in the tournament." Asami said.
However the mention of the tournament did dampen Makos spirts a little. Despite earning decent money at the power plant, he still hadn't earned enough to pay the championship pot entry fee for him and his brother.
"Yeah, well, ah, maybe next year." Mako simply said.
Asami was all but confused. "What do you mean? You made it in."
"It just isn't in the cards for us right now." Mako simply said not wanting to be honest about his problems in front of an upper class lady.
Asami wouldn't accept that for an answer so she put her hand comfortingly on the young firebenders. "Tell me what's the problem?"
So Mako decided to just come out with it. "We don't have the cash to ante up for the championship pot. So, it looks like we're out of the running." He said with disappointment despite Korra's help in the qualifying round and Kamala's support and encouragement, it may've all been for nothing.
"That's not fair." Asami consoled, she'd seen the ferrets compete, they had so much potential they should deserve to be washed out of the championship running. She was wondering what she could do to help.
Just then a waiter arrived with their meal. "Pardon me, Ms. Sato." he said getting their attention before lifting the tin lids to reveal their meals. "Your main course." Mako was rather surprised at the meal to say the least. However something else suddenly came to mind.
"Ms. Sato? You wouldn't happen to be related to Hiroshi Sato, creator of the Satomobile?" He guessed.
"Yeah. He's my dad." Asami said.
"Get out of town!" Mako said loudly in surprise, he was having dinner with the daughter of the biggest industrialist in Republic City.
"I'm serious. You want to meet him?" Asami offered while taking a sip of her drink.
"Meet the most successful captain of industry in all of Republic City? Yeah, I'll take you up on that" Mako accepted the offer.
Air Temple Island:
The next evening as the sun was setting Kamala and Korra sat on the porch of the air temple with Naga who was lying on her back. Just then Bolin arrived to see them with Pabu on his shoulder.
"Hello good friends." Bolin announced to them.
"Hey, Bolin." Korra replied while rubbing Naga's stomach.
"Hey Bo good to see you how've you been?" Kamala asked.
"Oh been good thanks, missed you guys at practice this week." Bolin said.
"Yeah, sorry about that." Korra apologised.
"Guess we've been kinda busy of late." Kamala apologised too.
"Ah, that's all right. We're probably out of the tournament anyways unless some money miraculously drops out of the sky by tomorrow." Bolin admitted, then suddenly.
"Heads up!" Called a voice Bolin looked and saw a familiar looking shield coming towards him acting quickly he earthbent the ground beneath him into a wall which the shield bounced off of and returned to its owner. Who caught it with one hand.
"Sorry about that Bolin didn't see you were there." Steve apologised as he came over.
"Ah no problem Cap I've blocked things bigger than that in Pro Bending matches." Bolin said, then he remembered. "Oh that reminds me, the reason I came by was to give you this." He presented Kamala and Korra a pair of red roses and a pair of iced cupcakes in a see through bag with cherries on top. "Tada!" He said. Pabu then leaped off of his shoulder.
"Wow thanks Bolin." Kamala said gratefully.
"Yeah thanks." Said Korra in mild surprise.
"And don't worry Cap I haven't forgotten you, here." Bolin handed Steve a small brown book. "Its a journal I thought since your a guy who likes history you could record your time here in Republic City for people back where your from."
Steve took the journal from Bolin. "Thanks Bolin, thats very kind of you but it really isn't necessary your thanks are all the reward I need."
"Oh I insist, and for Mr. Stark…" Just then Bolin noticed that the armoured Avenger wasn't with them. "Hey where is Tony?"
His answer came seconds later as a loud explosion could be heard inside the building, and the sound of coughing and choking as Tony emerged from the building in a cloud of black smoke.
"For the record sir I did warn you that amplifying the signal booster with your Arc Reactor would lead to an electrical explosion." JARVIS reminded.
"'cough' 'cough' Thank you Jarvis for that reminder!" Tony coughed on all the black smoke.
"You okay Tony?" Bolin asked.
"Yeah yeah don't sweat it kid, this kind of thing happens all the time." Tony brushed off.
"Thats an understatment." Steve joked which resulted in Korra and Kamala sharing a snicker.
"Anyway Tony got a present for you." Bolin said as he handed Tony what looked like a pair of welding goggles and fingerless gloves.
"Wow thanks kid, you got them in my colour too." Tony thanked seeing the goggles were red and gold like his armour.
"So whats all this for anyway?" Korra asked.
"Uh, oh I can't remember now." Bolin said rubbing his chin jokingly. "Oh yeah, now I remember. You guys saved me from Amon!"
"Oh, that? It was no big deal." Korra simply shrugged.
"No big deal, are you serious? I was totally freaking out when he was coming at me with his creepy mask all, "I will take away your bending forever.'" Bolin said acting like a zombie while trying to imitate the Equalist leader. "I mean that is.. scary stuff; I still can't sleep well."
"Yeah…feeling seems mutual." Kamala said to herself as she noticed how worried Korra looked while Bolin did his little play acting. This was also noticed by Tony and Steve.
Just then before anything else happened. "Delivery for Avatar Korra." A Pager arrived and delivered quite a large basket that was full of flowers and what looked like boxes of chocolates and products. No doubt they knew who this was from.
"Uh may I ask who this is from?" Kamala asked.
"Oh Councilman Tarrlok." The Pager answered as he bowed. "He sends his compliments and urges you to reconsider his offer."
"Tell him I haven't changed my mind." Korra brushed him off.
"Yeah and you can tell him mine and my friends position hasn't changed either." Kamala said.
The Pager merely bowed and went on his way, while Tony took a look at the gift basket. "Okay you gotta admire this guys persistence, but seriously a gift basket full of flowers and chocolates, thats the oldest trick in the playbook. I should know I wrote most of it."
"I will never understand this playbook of yours Stark." Steve shook his head.
"Be glad you never will my friend." Tony said.
"Who's this Tarrlok guy? Is he bothering you? Huh, 'cause I could have a word with him." Bolin said rather threateningly as he pounded his fists together.
"Uh yeah kid unless you want to beat the heck out of the guy that's pretty much the representative of the Northern Watertribes and one of the leaders of this city." Tony said rather sarcastically which did cause Bolin to regret saying that. "Then yeah thats a great way to get on his good side."
"Yeah he's this old guy Tenzin works with." Korra added.
"O…kay well I renounce that!" Bolin said. "Yeah thats actually much better."
However while everyone joked Steve looked with concern, it seems Tarrlok was a man of his word. He really wasn't giving up on the idea of the Avatar joining his task force, and he had a bad feeling that this pressure along with Korras obvious insecurities about Amon would lead to bad events.
The Next day:
Mako was now staining in the presence of the assembly line for the Satomobile, the well known vehicle used in all of Republic City. All around the factory the vehicles were being assembled and given maintenance before they went on sale or for a test drive. It was hard to believe that Mako had been given a golden ticket to see this place compliments of Asami. She was in a different outfit of a grey and red jacket with red cuffs a dark red skirt with red leggings and grey boots.
He was now talking to the man behind the vehicles himself Hiroshi Sato. He was middle aged had dark hair and some greys showing, a black beard and moustache, and wore an expensive suit in gold and black with spectacles. He was giving the young fire bender a tour of his facilities.
"What do you think of my little operation here?" Hiroshi genuinely asked.
"It's very impressive, Mr. Sato." Mako answered politely.
"Please, call me Hiroshi." Hiroshi said humbly. "So, I understand you're dirt poor."
Mako was most taken aback, that just came out of nowhere. "Uh, well …"
"Young man, it is nothing to be ashamed of. I too came from humble beginnings. Why, when I was your age, I was a mere shoe-shiner, and all I had to my name was an idea; the Satomobile." Hiroshi explained gesturing to one of his creations. "Now, I was fortunate enough to meet someone who believed in me and my work ethic." Mako felt rather amazed at listening to this humbled speech. "He gave me the money I needed to get my idea off the ground and I built the entire Future Industries empire from that one selfless loan." He gestured to his entire assembly line all built from his own hands.
"Dad, stop bragging. Just tell Mako the good news." Asami insisted, to which her dad chuckled.
"Uh what good news?" Mako asked all but confused.
Hiroshi decided this was the time to tell him. "Well, my daughter passionately told me all about your hard earned success in the Pro-bending Arena. And about your team's current financial stumbling block." Hiroshi said as he placed his hand on Mako's shoulder in a kind way.
"Now, I'd hate to see you lose your chance at winning the championship just because you're short a few yuans. That's why I'm going to sponsor the Fire Ferrets in the tournament." He then said rather eagerly.
Mako was completely taken aback, the richest capitalist in Republic City was going to sponsor his team in the Championship. If he was dreaming he'd wish it wouldn't end. "Are you serious?" He said surprised.
"He's serious. My dad's going to cover your ante for the championship pot." Asami confirmed happily.
Mako honestly didn't know what to say. "Tha-that is good news."
"There's just one catch." Hiroshi then said. "You all have to wear the Future Industries logo on your uniforms."
"I'll tattoo it on my chest if you want, sir." Mako chuckled pointing to his chest which Hiroshi and Asami shared a laugh over. "Thank you both so much.I promise the Fire Ferrets will make the most of this opportunity." Mako thanked shaking both their hands.
Air Temple island:
Meanwhile Tony was gazing at Tarrloks latest attempt to win Korra over to his task force. It was a red coloured convertible Sato Mobile with silver linings. He decided to let Ikki and Meelo play in it. Just then Tenzin and Kamala arrived to see the gift that was left at their doorstep.
"Out of the way Daddy, we're driving here!" Ikki said as she was making car noises while playing in the car. "Beeeeeeep beebeebeeeeep!"
"Beep beep." Meelo said imitating a car horn.
Tenzin just shook his head at this latest gift from Tarrlok. Kamala just couldn't believe this, she'd seen this kind of thing before back in New York but still couldn't believe it.
"Is this guy for real?" Kamala asked.
"I have often asked that question a lot Kamala." Tenzin breathed.
"Okay if this isn't a desperate cry for attention I don't know what is." Tony voiced. "I mean the charm with a slick ride trick, come on. But I must admit he does have good tastes."
"Be that as it may , Tarrlok's constant attempts to convince Korra is the last thing she needs right now." Tenzin said.
"Yeah especially with everything else thats going on." Kamala added. "Tenzin I'm worried about her ever since we saw Amons rally she's been quiet not to mention having nightmares about it."
"Nightmares?" Tenzin said surprised as this was the first he'd heard of this. "I suppose I'd better talk with her."
"I'll come too." Kamala said as she and Tenzin left Tony and the kids with the car.
Tony took a quick inspection of the vehicle and as much as he admired a slick hot rod, he had an idea of how else he could use it. "Hmm, it be a shame to waste it."
Meanwhile in the Yin and Yang courtyard, Korra was still practicing her air bending forms. While completely dismissing the gift that was left for her. Tenzin and Kamala arrived.
"I see Tarrlok's gifts are getting more and more extravagant." Tenzin said openly.
"Yeah, that guy doesn't know how to take "no" for an answer." Korra sighed while she continued her air bending movements.
"Tell me about it I've met a lot of people who'd do anything to get what they want." Kamala agreed.
"Korra, are you ... doing all right?" Tenzin voiced in genuine concern.
Korra stopped her training for a moment to answer. "Yeah, I'm fine." She answered.
Tenzin and Kamala weren't at all convinced, and decided it was time for an intervention. So they took a seat on the steps. "Why don't you take a break?" Tenzin offered.
So Korra took a seat next to Kamala and Tenzin. "Korra are you sure your feeling okay?" Kamala asked.
"Of course I'm fine why do you ask?" Korra wondered.
"Well its just you haven't been yourself lately." Kamala voiced in concern. "I mean I'm glad you turned down that whole Anti Equalist task force thing but, honestly I thought you would've jumped at the chance to kick some butt?"
"I'm just really focused on my airbending right now is all." Korra said.
"Yeah I get that but we just want to make sure you did it for the right reasons." Kamala said.
"I did." Korra said simply.
"Of course you did." Tenzin said but in all honesty he was genuinely concerned after what Kamala told him earlier he was worried for her wellbeing. "You know, it's okay to be scared. The whole city is frightened by what's been going on. The important thing is to talk about our fears, because if we don't, they can throw us out of balance."
Korra listened to what her teacher said but she still looked away with a mild sad expression on her face. She still wouldn't open up about what was bothering her. Tenzin and Kamala could see that she wouldn't open up so easily.
"He has a point Korra, it's…never a sign of weakness to say we're scared I mean your only human." Kamala said. Tenzin and her stood up as they were about to leave.
"We're always here for you, if you want to talk." Tenzin said as the two walked away leaving Korra alone.
As they went to the temple they saw Steve was leaning against the wall almost as if he was listening. "How much did you hear?" Tenzin asked.
"Enough to know that something is troubling Korra enough that she won't admit it." Steve said with concern.
"Yes I'm deeply worried." Tenzin said before turning to Kamala. "Kamala you said she'd been having nightmares, what are they about?"
"Take a guess?" Kamala said.
"Amon." Tenzin sighed in realisation.
"Yeah and I know why, it's because he can take peoples bending away." Kamala explained. "And she's worried it could happen to her. Bending is a part of who she is and to have it taken away terrifies her, I can see it in her eyes."
"So I see, but judging by what you said I take it you know a thing or too about that?" Tenzin asked.
"Yeah, it took me a while to accept my powers, and well when me and Bruce found out that AIM had a way of curing Inhumans, in ways that they wouldn't want to…I, the thought of it still terrifies me how they thought we needed to be cured, and Amons the same way." Kamala explained.
"Yes based on what you told me about them, I can see why it would be a concern. They sound no different than what Amon is trying to do." Tenzin realised.
"Right, but I have a feeling it's more than her just being afraid." Steve then voiced getting their attention. "She's also got her pride caught up in all of this. As you've said Kamala she's stubborn and she's trying to be the Avatar this city needs but if she admits she's scared she thinks people will think less of her. If theres anything I've learned in my experience is that when we allow our emotions to control our actions it can often lead to poor judgement."
He thought back to during the war when him and his howling commandos were doing a raid on a Hydra train to capture a lead scientist Arnim Zola. But during the battle his lifelong companion Bucky Barnes fell from the high cliff and Cap had all but grieved. His emotional state often lead to him making bad decisions, which was made worse when he learned that years later Bucky was alive but under a new name, The Winter Solider a brainwashed soldier for Hydra.
Though he helped him, he still feels responsible and is reminded of that every day. He knew if Korra kept this bottled up it would eventually blow up in her face.
That Evening:
Later that evening Korra and Kamala were hanging out on the banisters of the Air Temple while Jinora played a little game of Majong with Ikki. However their relaxing hang out was short lived as Kamala caught sight of someone.
"Oh boy look who's back." Kamala pointed out to Korra.
"Avatar Korra! I have something for you." The Pager offered.
By this point, Korra had just about enough of Tarrloks gifts and attempts to change her mind. Though Tony was making good use of the car he sent. As parts for his signal beacon.
"It doesn't matter how many gifts Tarrlok sends, I am not joining his task force." Korra said rather loudly as she earthbent the ground below the pager turning him round and then kicked him away.
"Yeah you tell him Korra!" Kamala cheered.
The pager recovered then turned around. "It's not a gift, it's an invitation." The Pager explained as he pulled out a card from his jacket.
"To what?" The girls said looking at each other in surprise. Korra took the paper from the pagers hands and looked at it.
"Tarrlok is throwing a gala in your honour." The Pager explained. "All of Republic City's movers and shakers will be there. The councilman humbly requests your attendance, and you are more than welcome to bring Ms Marvel and her companions as well."
The Avatar and young Avenger looked at the invitation rather suspiciously. Korra instantly knew this was one of Tarrloks attempts to change her mind. Despite this however.
"Well I guess we should attend." Korra decided.
"You sure?" Kamala said in questionable doubt.
"Well we can't not go it be rude to not attend, right?" Korra simply shrugged. Kamala could see her point but she also knew they needed to keep their guard up.
City Hall:
The nightlife of the city was alive and the most lively was at its very own city hall. Hanging from its walls were banners with pictures of Korra on them and most surprisingly there was one of Ms Marvel too. Just then the guests of honour arrived. Korra was wearing a dark blue and white dress with her hair down but wore her bangs and a small white bobble.
Kamala was wearing a simple chinese styled white dress with traces of red and blue on its lining, with blue boots. She kept her scarf round her neck. It wasn't hard for Tenzin to find tuxedoes for Tony and Steve. Steve's was a dark blue with a white undercoat and with dark blue pants. While Tony's tux was black with a dark red undercoat with black shoes. He also had a pair of sun glasses on his face with curved square lenses and silver frames.
Tenzin and his family were also dressed in their finest as they entered the party. While the children ran off to enjoy themselves Korra couldn't help but look in awe at the number of people who had come here tonight for this party.
"I can't believe this is all for me." Korra said in amazement.
"Yeah a big crowed, I should've brought my other suit." Tony said wishing he had brought his 'other suit.'
However despite the party, Tenzin, Steve and Kamala remain suspicious it wasn't like Tarrlok to throw parties, and the air bending master knew that.
"All the same Korra, we better keep our eyes open." Kamala voiced.
"Kamala is right I'm not sure what Tarrlok's plotting, but keep your guard up. It's not like him to throw a party just for the fun of it." Tenzin agreed.
Then almost as if on cue the man himself arrived wearing a darker version of his Northern Watertribe suit. "So glad you could make it, Avatar Korra." He greeted before turning to Tenzin. "If you'd excuse us, the city awaits its hero."
"Oh and Kamala since you are close friends with the Avatar you and your compatriots are welcome to join us." Tarrlok offered.
"Thank you councilman." Steve acknowledged. Before they left Tenzin pulled Kamala to the side.
"Keep an eye on Korra. Tarrlok's obviously gone to a lot of trouble to arrange this, and include your names on the invite. Obviously it has to do with whatever he has planned." Tenzin voiced to which Kamala nodded in agreement and followed Korra and Tarrlok.
In that moment however Tenzin had something else on his mind. Namely what his youngest son was doing. "Meelo! No, that's not a toilet! Oh dear." He said covering his eyes and walking in shame.
Meanwhile Tarrlok brought Korra, Kamala, Tony and Steve around the party to start mingling with the guests. Starting with some of Republic City's finest and most wealthy. To Tony this was just like attending a charity event back home, though he kinda wish Pepper was here to share it with him, it was the first time he'd been without his assistant now girlfriend.
The first person they met was the leader of Future Industries. Hiroshi Sato. "Korra, Kamala, it's my pleasure to introduce Republic City's most famous industrialist, Hiroshi Sato."
"Nice to meet you." Korra greeted.
"A pleasure sir." Kamala greeted.
The CEO simply bowed respectfully to that response. "We're all expecting great things from you."
Korra seemed rather pressured by that remark. "Right…greatness."
"Sato huh?" Tony came forward taking over. "I'm gonna take a wild guess at your the genius behind these Satomobiles I keep seeing around town?"
Hiroshi chuckled at that. "Ah very inquisitive, most people don't tend to guess right, and may I say I do recognise a fellow engineering genius when I see one. A philamprothist if I'm not mistake?"
"Hm very observant." Tony said impressed with a raised eyebrow. "Tony Stark, Stark Industries." He greeted with a handshake.
"A pleasure, but I must say I've never heard of your company before?" Hiroshi wondered.
"Oh its fairly new set up just came into town on business." Tony said, covering up the whole from a parallel universe thing.
Hiroshi then turned his attention to Kamala. "You must be Kamala, I've heard a great deal about you."
"Oh I see what have you heard?" Kamala said jokingly.
"Don't worry we only talked about the good stuff." Called a familiar voice and the two girls looked rather surprised to see two familiar faces in the form of Mako and Bolin.
They were in snazzy chinese style tuxedos, Bolins was in shades of dark and light green with a white shirt. While his brother wore the suit he had the other night. Korra took notice of the girl he was with who had a red dress with a gold broach.
"Hey guys." Bolin greeted as they came over.
"This is my daughter, Asami." Hiroshi introduced her daughter to Korra and Kamala.
"It's lovely to meet you both." Asami greeted politely turning to Mako. "Mako's told me so much about you."
"Really? Because he hasn't mentioned you at all." Korra said which resulted as Kamala gave her a nudge given her harsh tone.
"Its nice to meet you, I'm Kamala, Kamala Kahn." Kamala greeted polietly.
"Pleased to meet you Kamala, by the way I like that scarf it suits you." Asami complimented.
"Oh thanks." Kamala said.
"Wow Mako I gotta say I'm impressed, you work quick thats usually my job." Tony said. Which made Mako rolled his eyes, he knew from Kamala Tony was something of a charmer. "Tony Stark pleasure to meet you." He said offering his hand.
"A pleasure, but maybe you should tone down the charm." Asami said rather jokingly.
Tony just laughed. "Heh Mako don't let this one go, you've made me proud."
"Don't you ever stop Tony?" Cap shook his head.
"Yeah, no." Tony brushed off.
Steve then stepped forwards. "Captain Steve Rogers its nice to meet you ms Sato." He greeted with a handshake to which she accepts.
"Wow thats a tight grip?" Asami complimented his tight grip. "Sorry pleasure to meet you, oh and please call me Asami."
"So how'd you two meet?" Steve then asked.
Mako was about to explain but as always his brother beats him to the punch. "Asami crashed into him on her moped."
"WHAT!" Korra and Kamala said at the same time.
"Are you okay?" Korra then asked.
"I'm fine. More than fine." Mako said rather happy deciding to share the good news. "Mister Sato agreed to sponsor our team; we're back in the tournament!"
"Hehe, isn't that great?" Bolin said rather excited.
"Great thats fantastic!" Kamala said all but happy for her friends.
"Yeah…great." Korra said a little down, don't get her wrong she was happy for her teammates but at the same time she was more focused on how close Mako and Asami seemed to be.
Kamala could see somethings wrong. "Hey you okay?" Kamala whispered. Korra then took Kamala to the side for a moment out of earshot of her teammates.
"Honestly Kamala I'm not sure I mean Mako shows up here with a new girlfriend and, I'm facing expectation from the city's finest." Korra whispered to her friend. "I honestly don't know how much more I can take?"
However at that moment Kamala noticed someone she recognised all too well, someone that Korra wouldn't like seeing again. "Then don't turn around." Kamala simply said in dismay. Despite her warning Korra turned round to see a certain chief of police walking by.
"Chief Beifong, I believe you,Avatar Korra and Ms Marvel have already met." Tarrlok greeted.
Kamala tried to give an innocent sincere appearance on things. "Uh hi chief… nice to see you again." Kamala said innocently and politely on Korra's behalf given their first meeting didn't go so well.
"Just because the city's throwing you this big to-do, don't think you're something special. You've done absolutely nothing to deserve this." Lin said rather harshly and learned in glaring then walked away.
This did nothing to cheer Korra up, she was more miserable than before but deep down she couldn't help but wonder if she was right. Kamala did pull a face when she walked away.
"Heh, nice to see you too." Kamala muttered. "just as warm and fuzzy as the first time."
Tony said a little intimidated. "Reminds me of when I broke up with Whitney."
"Tony, she does take pride in her work and based on what I've heard she's a dedicated officer of the law." Steve said. "I do admire that." Steve said.
"Yeah she's intimidating enough for Thor, at least thats what I heard." Kamala said.
"What? She intimidated the god of Thunder ha I'd like to see that." Tony laughed unconvinced. "I mean come on sure she's cold and ruthless but I could calm that."
Kamala and Steve looked a little panicked while he was bragging. "Uh Tony.." Steve tried while Kamala waved her arms around frantically.
"I mean I've seen hard driven people like her before give it a week and we'll be buddies." Tony cracked however he finally noticed Kamala shaking her hands frantically.
"Oh….she's…right behind me isn't she." Tony said was right Lin was standing behind him rather unimpressed.
"Keep trying, not gonna happen rich boy." Lin said rather harshly as she walked away. Leaving Tony completely shocked and intimidated.
"Okay that woman, scares me." Tony finally said.
As the party continued, Tarrlok then out of nowhere brought Korra and Kamala before a horde of reporters who were ready with questions.
"If you'd be so kind, they just have a couple of questions." Tarrlok said.
"But…" Before Korra could protest she was pushed forwards by Tarrlok, and so the questions began.
"Avatar Korra, you witnessed Amon take away people's bending firsthand. How serious a threat does he pose to the innocent citizens of Republic City?" One of the reporters asked.
"I think he presents a real problem." Korra said clearing her throat but felt rather uncertain in her answer.
Tarrlok all but smiled arrogantly, which didn't go unnoticed by Kamala then suddenly it hit her. This was the trap. Steve noticed this too as he tried to get to the girls.
"Then why have you and your companion Ms Marvel refused to join Tarrlok's task force? As the Avatar, shouldn't you be going after Amon?" Another reporter asked.
"Well, I …" Korra tried.
"Why are you backing away from this fight?" Another reported asked almost immediately.
Korra seemed rather offended by that very question. "What? No! I've never backed away from anything in my life!"
"You promised to serve this city, aren't you going back on that promise now?" Another reporter bombarded.
"No she's not!" Kamala stepped up. "She's not going back on that promise at all!"
"Kamala what are you doing?" Korra whispered to her.
"Korra we have to let this go, Tarrloks playing you an…" Before Kamala could finish that sentence.
"Do you think pro-bending is more important than fighting the revolution?" Another reporter then said. "And why does your companion seem more hesitant to face Amon?"
"How do you think Avatar Aang would have handled this?" Another reporter bombarded.
Korra was becoming more confused, annoyed and intimidated by these questions. Kamala tried her best to pull her away from all this, but it was all in vain. Then with one final question.
"Are you afraid of Amon?"
The Avatar finally snapped and pulled away from her friend. "I am not afraid of anybody!" She yelled. "If the city needs me then … I'll join Tarrlok's task force and help fight Amon." She gestured to said councilman.
"WHAT!" Kamala exclaimed. Steve and Tony looked in complete shock and disbelief at what they'd just heard, this was part of Tarrloks plan.
"There's your headline, folks." Tarrlok said putting his arm around Korra's shoulder as the photographers took their photos.
In the crowd Tenzin just looked down disappointed that Korra let her fear and pride get the best of her. While Mako and Bolin looked at each other all but confused, while Asami remained oblivious to the obvious. Tarrlok maintained his smirk, Kamala looked at her friend in complete disbelief and all Korra could do is look away with a saddened expression knowing she'd been duped.
Later as Korra was being escorted away by Tarrlok, the air bending master pulled Tarrlok to the side. "You planned this all along didn't you!" He accused.
"Why Tenzin I'm shocked I didn't do anything, Korra is simply doing what she feels is best for the city." Tarrlok said innocently.
"Oh cut this innocent crap will you!" Tony then said as he, Steve and Kamala came over.
"So I take it you've changed your minds to join my task force as well." Tarrlok asked.
By this point Kamala had enough of this creep. "Oh you want an answer!" She then enlarged her fist and slammed it into the nearby wall. Which did spook Tarrlok a bit. "Theres my answer!"
"Kamala stand down!" Steve urged trying to calm her down and so Kamal reduced her fist back to normal size.
"Its no, my answer will always be no!" Kamala then said with a hateful glare.
"Fine I don't think I want you on my task force anyway Ms Marvel, after all the Avatar doesn't need a sidekick." Tarrlok said as he was about to walk away until Tony grabbed him firmly by the shoulder.
"Don't ever speak to her that way! And if anything happens to Avatar Korra because of you then it won't just be Amon that you have to worry about!" Tony gave a firm warning.
Tarrlok shoved the soldiers hand from his shoulder and walked away with his own glare leaving the group to talk alone.
Kamala just sighed. "You were right Cap, Korra is letting her fears and pride cloud her judgement."
"Gah! I knew this would happen!" Tenzin said blaming himself. "I should've done something."
"Don't blame yourself Tenzin, Tarrlok dealt his hand well, knew what buttons to push." Tony said to him in assurance. "I've seen this happen many times."
"And tonight was just the push Tarrlok needed." Steve agreed.
"But we're not gonna stand by and do nothing in case Korra gets in over her head, right?" Kamala asked desperately.
"Kamala I promise thats the last thing we're gonna do." Steve assured her with a comforting hand on her shoulders. Before looking to see Tarrlok and Korra walking away.
"I think it's time for The Avengers to act." He finally said.
The Following evening:
Gathered at city hall was the newly assembled Anti Equalist Task Force. A vast number of members Korra included sat at a curved table. They all wore uniforms in dark blue and brown robes with silver armoured shoulderpads and boots. They also had silver badges on their chests. Most of them wore helmets while Korra didn't. However she was currently twiddling her fingers rather sad, as she questioned whether she made the right decision. She kind of wished Kamala was with her.
Just then Tarrlok who was in the same uniform spoke to his team. "My fellow task force deputies, tonight we will execute a raid on an underground chi blocker training camp located in the Dragon Flats borough." He then gestured to a board with blueprints to a certain building. According to my sources, there is a cellar underneath this bookstore…"
However what Tarrlok didn't know was that close to City Hall someone was listening in.
On a rooftop just across from the hall. Captain America and Ms Marvel now suited up were listening in on the meeting. Cap had his helmet com listening to the meeting.
"….where Equalists train chi blocking in secret." Tarrlok finished.
"Wow, so Tony bugged him Cap." Ms Marvel said amazed. "But isn't that more Black Widow's style?"
Flashback:
During Tony and Tarrlok's harsh words what the councilman didn't know was that he placed a small device on his shoulder close to his neck. Which started beeping before Tarrlok walked away.
Present day:
"Hey I can hear you you know kid. And yeah but Nat's not the only one who keeps tabs on things. I've had Jarvis tracking him through it since our little party last night." Tony called on the coms.
As night fell the Task Force moved in on the bookstore which served as the cover for Chi Blocker training. They pulled up in a flatbed truck with what looked like a water tanker on the rear in the cargo bay the task force members crouched down. They disembarked from the vehicle quietly.
While on the rooftops and Cap had arrived on the scene. They crouched down behind the edge but the super solider poked up and pulled out some binoculars to spy on things.
"They're moving in." Cap said quietly. "The minute they attack the Equalists will likely signal for back up."
"What makes you think so?" Ms Marvel wondered.
"One thing I learned in the army Kamala, is when a training post is attacked the standard procedure is to call for help given how organised the Equalists are becoming." Cap explained given his own experiences.
"I guess." Ms Marvel realised but was more concerned with the fact they were going in outnumbered. "But you sure we shouldn't have brought Iron Man along for this?"
"This mission requires stealth, and given how Korra's acting on her fears she'll likely let her guard down." Cap explained.
"Which is why we're here to back her up." Ms Marvel added.
"Right, but at the same time we need to do this quietly because since we turned down his offer of joining, if Tarrlok were to see us get involved he'll likely take advantage of this." Cap continued.
"Or see us as interfering and lock us up too." Ms Marvel realised.
Cap did smile at how well the young Avenger picked up on his thinking. "Your learning well kid." He complimented which put a smile on her face.
Far below, Tarrlok and his task force approaches the side wall of the building where there were window openings at the bottom. Korra slowly peeked into one of the windows in an opening, and inside she saw men and women with masks on the bottom of their faces training with dummies and partners to master Chi Blocking. This was a training camp alright, however the Avatars gaze turned to the poster of their leader on the wall, she suddenly had a flashback to her dream of Amon reaching out to her and she gasped in fright.
She looked away then bearing a serious look on her face. Ms Marvel was watching from nearby and couldn't stop but worry for her friend.
Tarrlok gave several hand signals to his team. So one on the wagon turns the wheel on the water container, then the water benders among the task force bent the water out of it and shared it to the others. They awaited Tarrloks signal. As the tension grew Korra took a deep breath and prepared herself.
Inside the training camp the people training were completely unaware, when suddenly a flood of water surged in catching some of the trainees before it froze to ice. The wall exploded allowing the earth bending members of the task force to move in and strike. They used their bending to pin one trainee to a wall while the others were catapulted away.
Tarrlok and Korra swooped in with the councilman using his water bending to freeze the head of one trainee. While the other two escaped through a door and one fired a couple of gas capsules which Korra quickly froze in ice.
"I'm going after those two." Korra said as she pursued the escaping trainees.
Outside with Cap and Ms Marvel they could see the assault was going well. However when Cap looked through his binoculars he saw something troubling. It was a truck and as he zoomed in he saw
"Reinforcements, just like I thought." Cap realised which got Ms Marvel's attention.
"They'll ambush the task force!" She realised.
"They won't I'll handle them you head down and go after Korra she may need back up." Cap instructed. "But don't let them see you."
"Aye aye cap!" Ms Marvel said as she leaped from the rooftop while Cap ran in the opposite direction.
The truck with about ten Equalist Chi Blockers inside were approaching the street close to the bookstore. When suddenly they heard a large thud on the roof which dented it. The driver looked surprise only for him to be yanked out of the drivers seat surprising the passenger, who was dragged out himself and tossed into an alley.
Captain America leaped from the roof and tossed his shield at the truck smashing right through the engine and out the other side, crashing into a post and returned to the super solider as he landed. The truck came to a stop, but bursting out the back were the Chi Blockers who readied their bolas. Cap stood ready as the first two Chi Blockers throw their bolas towards him as he ran and slid under them before tossing his shield which slammed a blow into one Chi Blockers chest and then the other knocking them unconscious on the ground.
The others attacked Cap who quickly threw a round house kick knocking one back then slammed his foot into his shield like a skateboard slamming the Chi Blocker in the chin, only for Cap to slam his shield into him knocking him unconscious. One got behind him and tried to use his chi blocking strikes only for the Avenger to grab him by the arm and swing him into an incoming Chi blocker.
However that left him open for another Chi Blocker to swoop in and land a few nerve strikes to his leg. Cap collapsed to the ground and before he could defend himself . *THUD!*
The Chi Blocker who was about to strike him down then collapsed to the ground himself. Cap looked and to his surprise, was another chi blocker it was a female judging from her build. Cap was speechless and the Chi Blocker said nothing as she ran from the scene. The super soldier didn't know what to make of would an enemy help him?
Meanwhile at the bookstore cellar the task force was rounding up the remaining trainees, but didn't even notice a certain polymorph slip in and went through the open door. Ms Marvel knew thats where Korra must have gone.
Korra meanwhile burst through a door that lead into a brick walled tunnel, which was clearly meant for an escape route. She ran down it trying to catch up to the fleeing Equalists. However she neglected the presence of a tripwire which she tripped over and crashed to the ground. All of a sudden a Chi Blocker fell from the roof to attack Korra, she quickly bent the earth below her knocking the chi blocker in the chest. She fell on her back and another chi blocker armed with a bola appeared behind her. Before she could act a large hand suddenly slammed into the Chi blocker catapulting him into the right wall. Knocking him unconscious.
Korra looked and saw it came from a smiling Ms Marvel who offered her hand to help her up. Korra accepted that as she was pulled back up to her feet. Before any words could be shared the Chi blocker who attacked earlier was about to attack.
"Look out!" Korra exclaimed and was about to bend the earth when suddenly. Something shot across the room and struck the Chi Blocker and pinned him to the wall. What struck him was an arrow that hit the clothing in his uniform.
Ms Marvel and Korra looked in shock and wondered where that came from, but as the young Avenger looked at the arrow she recognised it and turned to its source but there was no-one there.
"Avatar Korra." Called Tarrlok who was heading his way. Korra looked to Ms Marvel who nodded and made herself scarce running from the scene.
Tarrlok then arrived and saw the Equalists who were knocked out and restrained by Korra's water frozen to ice. "Nice work Avatar, I knew we'd make a good team." Tarrlok complimented.
"Yeah, we do." Korra said demeaningly while silently thanking the fact that her friend Kamala and her friends were still watching her back.
Minutes later the rest of the Chi Blockers were apprehended by the task force, as well as, the ones that Captain America had dealt with earlier. It didn't take long for the press to arrive and take photos of their triumph, taking the Equalists into custardy and marching them to prison.
The following day:
The events of last night had made front page news, but the success wasn't shared by all. As in the Pro Bending Gym Mako and Bolin were training for the Championships, however they were still short one teammate. As Toza swept the place with his mop Bolin was holding two earth disks as his brother read the paper.
"No Korra for practice again?" Bolin asked.
"Doesn't look like it." Mako replied rather grimly. Bolin just tossed the disks away with a slump, seems Korra had so many priorities that the Pro Bending didn't fit in anymore.
"Hi guys." Called a voice and the two brothers saw Kamala had entered the room in her normal water tribe attire.
"Kamala hey." Bolin greeted a little cheered up happy to see at least one familiar face.
"What brings you here?" Mako asked.
"Well just wanted to see how you guys were doing, you know considering...recent events." Kamala voiced openly.
"You mean how Korra joined Tarrloks task force and well bailing on us?" Mako said.
"Come on bro theres no need for that." Bolin defended.
"Yeah and Korras not to fond of this either." Kamala then said.
"Then why's she doing it, just as her duties being the Avatar?" Mako asked.
Given the circumstances Kamala decided that now was the time they knew. "Okay guys look I'm only gonna tell you this because I care about Korra as much as you do but well…Ever since that night at Amons rally, she's been having nightmares about him."
This got the boys attention and concern almost immediately. "What?" Mako breathed.
"She's been having nightmares, but why didn't she tell us about it?" Bolin wondered.
"Because she's hiding the fact that she's scared." Kamala said.
"Scared?" Mako said rather surprised. "But why would she be scared?"
"I bet its cause he can take her bending away if she ever got caught." Bolin realised. "I mean take it from me who's come close to that it's as scary as hell!"
"Right, and think about it she's been sheltered in the White Lotus compound for so long, and all of this is new to her she doesn't know how to act." Kamala said.
"But why don't you just talk to her about it?" Bolin voiced.
"B..because she won't open up to me even Tenzin and Steve tried but you know how stubborn she can be!" Kamala explained almost as if she's frustrated about this too.
Mako and Bolin could see by the tone in her voice this was serious. They were finding this hard to process, even in the short time they knew Korra they found her to be confident and fearless, but to know this whole Amon situation was getting to her and they never noticed it before.
"I can't believe we never saw it." Bolin realised in some small guilt.
"I guess we were too wrapped up in our own problems about the tournament to see it." Mako realised. "Kamala is there any way we can try and get through to her?"
Before Kamala could answer that question she heard something beeping. She reached into her pocket and pulled out her Avengers ID card it was beeping and so she answered it to see Steves face on the screen.
"Cap hey whats up?" Kamala asked.
"Kamala are you near a radio right now?" Steve asked and from the tone of his voice this sounded serious.
Kamala looked and saw there was a radio on the chair in the gym. "Yeah why?"
"Put it on, any channel." Steve said, and so Kamala put her ID card away and did as he said and turned on the radio.
"We now go to city hall where Councilman Tarrlok and Avatar Korra are giving a statement." The announcer said which got everyones attention. Something was going down at City hall.
"Avatar Korra has bravely answered the call to action. With the two of us leading the charge, Republic City has nothing to fear from Amon and the Equalists." Tarrlok announced before the questions from the press began, as Kamala, Mako and Bolin listened intently.
"Question for the Avatar! Amon remains at large. Why have you failed to locate him?" Said a pressman.
"You want to know why? Because Amon is hiding in the shadows like a coward." Korra answered.
"Oh boy I don't like where this is going." Mako said with concern. Kamala didn't like the sound of this either.
"Amon, I challenge you to a duel! No task force, no chi blockers, and no Ms Marvel!" That announcement made Kamala gasp in fright and surprise. "Just the two of us tonight at midnight on Avatar Aang Memorial Island. Let's cut to the chase and settle this thing, if you're man enough to face me."
The sound of the microphone dropped and the sound of the press badgering with questions could be heard. With that Bolin just turned off the radio.
"Oh man has she lost it!" Bolin exclaimed. Mako was about to ask Kamala something but looked to see her running out of the gym.
As the night began to fall over the city in the park Mako and Asami were enjoying a romantic ride in a carriage. Despite it being a few days it would seem the two had grown rather close to each other, almost as if fate had brought them together.
"I know it sounds weird to say this, but I'm really glad I hit you with my moped." Asami said.
"Uh, me too." Mako chuckled at that.
However there was something that the beauteous girl wanted to ask the young fire bender. "I forgot to ask. Why didn't you accept the new silk scarf I bought for you last week?" she said gesturing to the scarf. "You didn't like it?"
"No, it was really nice, but this scarf was my father's. And it's all I have left of him." Mako then admitted, still not comfortable with the subject. "I just feel like…Like it keeps me safe."
"I'm so sorry. I lost my mother when I was very young." Asami admitted, to which Mako placed a comforting hand on hers.
The two then gazed into each others eyes as they cuddled closer together. Asami places her hand on Makos chest he places his on top of hers. The two cuddled together enjoying their time in each others arms.
"I feel so safe with you." Asami said. Mako enjoyed her company, but at the same time however, he wondered about a certain Avatar who wasn't admitting her own fears and what Kamala was doing about it.
Air Temple Island:
Korra had just prepared herself for the duel but just as she was about to leave and meet Tarrlok. She saw Kamala standing in the doorway.
"YOU CHALLENGED AMON TO A DUEL!" Kamala yelled.
It was clear to the Avatar that her friend had heard of her recent announcement. However she still stood firmly by her decision.
"Kamala please I have to do this, I'm done letting Amon get away with what he's doing I need to face him." Korra said to her.
"Not until we talk!" Kamala said as she wouldn't move.
"Theres nothing to talk about, I'm doing this." Korra said getting a little annoyed.
"Yes there is! Have you given the slightest thought of what could happen! How do you even know if Amon will show and even if he does it won't be a fair fight!" Kamala tried to talk her out of it.
"Kamala I know what I'm doing what I need to do as the Avatar!" Korra then said pushing Kamala aside and heading out only for Kamala to go after her.
"Why just because of your responsibilities? Or because you're trying to prove your not afraid!" Kamala then yelled stopping Korra in her tracks.
"I'm not scared!" Korra protested back.
"Yes you are! I can see it in your eyes well you think your the only one who's scared! Eversince I got these powers I've been afraid! Afraid of what people would think even my own family! When AIM captured me and other Inhumans I was scared out of my mind! Because I was trying to prove something just as you are now!" Kamala exclaimed to her. "But you've also got your pride caught up in this now and its gonna get you killed because your too stubborn and hard headed to admit your afraid!"
" I AM NOT AFRAID!" Korra yelled at Kamala. "Amon is trying to hurt the city and its my responsibility to stop him! I am charged with this duty! And if you were a bender or even the Avatar you'd understand what I'm talking about but your not!" Korra yelled in Kamala's face "So you don't!"
Kamala looked rather hurt by what she had just said, and it seemed she lost her cool. "REALLY! cause I'll tell you what I don't need! This any of it! ESPECIALLY FROM MY BEST FRIEND!" She yelled in anger as she started to stretch out to a larger size much to Korras shock.
"You want to charge in and get yourself killed or lose your bending just to prove some point! Then fine go ahead! But that doesn't mean I have to watch!" Kamala exclaimed. "Besides you don't need me! The Avatar doesn't need a sidekick!" She then stormed off with tears forming in her eyes.
"Kamala!" Korra called but she was looked with a little in remorse by what she'd just said. She didn't really mean what she said, but it was too late the damage had been done. Despite this she bore a serious expression as she turned and left.
Later she was on the docks preparing a boat to leave for Avatar Aang memorial island. Tarrlok and the rest of the Task Force was present. Just then Tenzin arrived gliding in on his glider, it would seem he too had heard of Korra's insane challenge and tried to talk her out of it.
"Korra, this is madness." Tenzin told her, but she was still seeing this through.
"Don't try to stop me and don't follow me. I have to face Amon alone." Korra said as she wrapped the rope around her hands.
Tenzin glared at the one who was clearly responsible for this. "This is all your doing!" He glared at Tarrlok angrily.
"I tried to talk her out of it too, but she's made up her mind." Tarrlok held his hands up defensively.
Without further delay Korra used her water bending to blast the boat forwards waving her arms back and fourth to gain more speed.
"We'll be watching the island closely. If anything goes wrong, I have a fleet of police airships ready to swoop down." Tarrlok assured but Tenzin just grumbled as he looked out to the island.
Air Temple:
Meanwhile Tony was now in his armour and charging it from his makeshift dynamo which was working better thanks to the parts from that sato mobile Tarrlok sent.
"Tony!" He looked and saw Steve in his uniform had a serious expression on his face. "Kamala's gone and she took Naga with her!"
"What!" Tony exclaimed.
"She must've gone after Korra to face Amon!" Steve realised as he quickly put his helmet on and placed his shield on his back. "Come on we're going after them!"
"Jarvis whats the status of the suits power!" Tony asked urgently.
"Your power levels are up to 80% power sir your limited to your repulsers but not enough for sustained flight with a passenger." JARVIS relayed.
"Ah screw it!" Tony said as he ripped the wires from his chest piece and then his helmet assembled round his head.
"We need to move." Cap said as they hurried out the room but before they could leave the island.
"Sir." JARVIS called.
"What is it now Jarvis?" Iron Man asked rather hastily as this was not the time for chit chat.
"I'm picking up a transmission on an encoded carrier frequency to your ID card." JARVIS relayed.
"What? But that shouldn't be possible this world doesn't have the tech for that?" Tony questioned on the hub.
"Yet this indicates otherwise sir, someone is trying to reach out to you." JARVIS explained.
"Okay..uh…accept transmission?" Tony said wondering what this was all about.
Avatar Aang Memorial Island:
On the memorial island Korra had arrived in a matter of minutes and she now stood at the base of the statue of Aang, as she waited for her opponent. As her hair blew in the wind her nerves were building up and was getting restless for a fight. She sharply looked to her right and quickly took up a fighting stance but saw that no-one was there. She relaxed then suddenly a loud dong noise sounded which caused her to yelp. The clock had struck midnight, the bell dong echoed everywhere. The time of the duel had come.
Korra stood and waited for her opponent, however as time passed the city lights had begun to dim and all was becoming quiet. Korra sat on the floor and waited, and waited. However it was becoming clear that Amon was nowhere to be seen.
Korra stretched her arms out and yawned. "Guess you're a no-show, Amon. Who's scared now?" She said as she stood up and jumped down from the statue.
As she walked down to the entrance to the sanctum she was in thought about things. Namely about how she mistreated a friend of hers. She felt guilty about how she lashed out at her, she'd been a good friend ever since they got her and she does this to her. She knew she had to try and make things right with her, if she'd even listen to her.
All of a sudden as she passed the entrance she felt her feet being yanked tripping her up. She was tied by a bola rope which dragged her into the sanctum entrance. In the darkness she found herself surrounded by about twenty one chi blockers who surrounded her in a circle. Acting quickly she spins and burns the rope around her legs and breaks free and fire bends around her to defend herself.
However the Equalists worked faster as they quickly overwhelmed the Avatar wrapping whips around her arms to restrain her from all sides. Korra quickly used her legs to bend earth and fire at the attacking Equalists but with several carefully placed chi strikes to her back she was restrained.
Before the Chi Blockers could finish her off however suddenly a giant fist punched them aside into the wall. Korra looked and saw Ms Marvel standing in the door way leaping into the air and enlarging her foot sending a shock wave into the ground scattering the Chi Blockers.
She looked at Korra who had a terrified expression on her face but was glad that she was here. However just then she spotted something.
"KAMALA BEHIND YOU!" She cried but it was too late a chi blocker landed several chi strikes to Ms Marvels legs and arms causing her to collapse to the ground. Korra tried to get up but was rendered unconscious herself.
Some of the Chi Blockers restrain Korra by the arms and lift her up, doing the same to Ms Marvel. "Kamala! Kamala!" Korra cried desperately.
"I..I'm okay Korra." Ms Marvel said. However things were about to get much worse.
Fore emerging out of the shadows, was no less than Amon himself. "I received your invitation, young Avatar."
Ms Marvel looked in total fear as she saw the Equalist leader approaching Korra. To her she was full of fear, it was her nightmare come to life, as Amon reached out with his hand she closed her eyes preparing for the worst.
struggled to try and break free and use her powers, but the chi strikes hadn't worn off yet.
"Stay away from her!" She cried in desperation. However instead of taking her bending Amon merely cupped her chin and looked her squarely in the eye. Which trembled with fear in his presence.
"Our showdown, while inevitable, is premature. Although it would be the simplest thing for me to take away your bending right now, I won't." Amon said as Korra's eyes trembled in fear. "You'd only become a martyr. Benders of every nation would rally behind your untimely demise" Korra looked at him in anger.
"You know you have a funny way of answering to a duel! You speak of equality yet you come here outnumbering her! This isn't equality this is fear!" Ms Marvel exclaimed. "You ask me your too afraid to face Korra otherwise you wouldn't have come without back up!"
Amon turned his attention to the captive young Avenger as he looked over her. "And what would you know of what I seek, you claim you are a bender yet I see you for what you are. A perversion someone with no business in interfering with what must be done." Amon simply said to her.
"You know your not the first person to say that to me!" Ms Marvel defied. "But I know that Equality isn't achieved like this your becoming a terrorist!"
Amon dismissed this girls petty threats and looked to the both of them. "Oh but I assure you, I have a plan. And I'm saving you for last, then you'll get your duel, and seeing as how this Ms Marvel here is so committed to protecting you Avatar I will destroy her first, then it will be your turn."
He then delivered a shoulder jab to Korra knocking her out. "Korra!" Ms Marvel exclaimed as she collapsed to the ground. "YOU BASTARD!" She yelled at Amon.
He then was about to ready a strike for Ms Marvel, when suddenly. An arrow shot across the room and exploded out a net which captured three of the Chi Blockers in the room then another arrow was fired restraining some of them to the ground in a special glue.
"Ah ah thats not very nice Kabuki boy!" The Equalists and Ms Marvel looked to the open doorway and they saw a man with a bow and arrow armed in his hands. The young Avenger recognised him all too well indeed.
"Thats no way to treat a couple of ladies!" He said.
"Hawkeye!" Ms Marvel called.
"Hey kid, you miss me?" Hawkeye winked to her. Amon however was unfazed.
"You are acquainted with the Avatar?" Amon simply asked.
"Just say I'm a guy who doesn't approve of a bunch of jerks ganging up on a couple of kids." Hawkeye said training his arrow on Amon.
The Chi Blockers readied their bolas for a fight. While Amon simply chuckled. "You must think yourself confident if you think you can best us all with wood and string?"
Though Clint was outnumbered he merely just smirked. "Who says I am alone?"
Everyone was silent, when out of nowhere a female Chi blocker suddenly attacked her own comrades. She grabbed the two restraining Ms Marvel and smashed their heads together, the others reacted but she leaped over the two and twirled round kicking the two approaching Equalists tried to grab her but she flipped over him and wrapped her legs round his head and slammed him down to the ground. Three more attacked but the female Chi Blocker pulled something out of her belt and tossed it to the ground, they were small disks and upon hitting the floor they delivered electric stings stunning them.
The Chi Blockers over Korra then swung their Bolas only for the female Chi Blocker to grab them and swing them back at them where they were tied up and restrained.
Suddenly she pulled out what looked like a gun on Amon himself who was surprised. "What is this!" He demanded.
Ms Marvel quickly ran to Korra and looked with hopeful eyes at her saviour. For she knew there was only one person alive who could pull off moves like that.
"Oh I'm sorry." She removed her mask to reveal her face and it was the face, of Black Widow, Natasha Romanoff. "Did I step on your moment?"
Ms Marvel practically had a look of joy on her face while Amon just glared behind his mask. However just as a Chi Blocker was about to attack Widow from behind. Crashing through the ceiling was Iron Man who blasted the ChI Blocker with his repulsers. Another was about to attack only to receive a blow to the chest by a certain shield that returned to Captain America who stood in a battle stance.
"Make your move Kabuki boy, I dare you." Iron Man said training his repulsers on Amon who was now surrounded by the Avengers.
"So you are the two who assisted the Avatar and her compatriots the other night." Amon said looking at the armoured avenger and the super soldier among them. "Am I to gather that you all are aquatinted with each other?"
"Yeah you might say we're a part of a private club." Hawkeye said.
"For someone who speaks of Equality Amon, you outnumber someone who calls you out to a duel?" Captain America then addressed.
"I was merely showing The Avatar what happens to those who would dare underestimate me, and as I told her victory is too early to savour now." Amon explained. "For a victor who claims victory too soon is one that is short lived. The victor is the one who choses to be patient. Tonight was just to send a message, to her and all benders alike to show they can no longer oppose us non benders. Yet I wonder why do you, fellow non benders choose to stand against me why risk your lives for those who would persecute you later?"
"Because, what your doing here isn't trying to bring equality, you intend to start a war, how is that achieving balance?" Captain America questioned. "How is that the ideal that Korra's predecessor has imagined for this city?"
"Avatar Aang was a naive child who never understood equality!" Amon then said. "Equality means being the same yet one side has power the other does not. Even before this very city was founded Benders and Non Benders have been fighting for dominance over this land because of the growing industry. Yet a child tasked with brining balance all but idolises the idea of co-exsistance, but that is a mere fairy tale it will never be possible as long as common men like me are opposed by those who have power, it is time we took our rightful place. Tyrants like Fire Lord Ozai have been abusing their power to the weak and the helpless, well now it is time for their kind to see what it means to be helpless and weak!"
"And who are you to decide that!" Ms Marvel exclaimed. "You condemn people just for the sins of one!"
"You are right Amon." Everyone eyed the super soldier in surprise was he agreeing with this mad man.
"I have seen people with power abuse it, and those who can't protect themselves are opposed by them. But the thing is those who have no powers can just as easily become no , Poloticians and Governments can easily be corrupted by the power they have and are condemned for it. So what makes you think your any better?" Cap then asked. "You may think you're leading a noble cause, but the question is. How far are you willing to go in the name of it? You start with noble intentions but in the end you'll cross a line, one theres no coming back from, then you realise you've become no better than the ones you claim oppose you!"
"And what would you know of such things?" Amon questioned.
"We've seen enough evil visionaries like you to know that you intend to go too far." Black Widow then said. "When you endanger people be it benders or non benders thats where we make it our concern."
"Yeah there was once someone like you who thought he knew what was best for everyone, but he threatened the world with war, and tempered with powers he couldn't control." Iron Man then said. "Because you see Amon, theres no version of this where you come out on top, because if us and the Avatar can't protect this world. You can be damn well sure we'll avenge it."
Amon was silent it was clear these non benders had made their choice of allegiance clear. There was no more that needed to be said.
"Very well." Amon simply said then out of nowhere gas canisters rolled in and coated the entire area with green smoke. The Avengers coughed as they were blinded by the smoke.
"He's getting away!" Black Widow called.
"Jarvis where is he?" Iron Man exclaimed as he looked around repulsers at the ready.
"He is gone sir, I'm not detecting any heat signatures in the area." JARVIS reported.
"Gah damn it!" Iron Man seethed as the smoke cleared.
Wasting no time the Avengers went to check on Korra and Ms Marvel. "Kid you alright?" Black Widow asked then much to her surprise she immediately received a hug from the young Avenger.
"Oh thank god you showed up!" Ms Marvel thanked with tears of joy in her eyes. To which Natasha replied back with a smile.
"Hey don't I get a hug?" Hawkeye asked.
"Aw come here!" Ms Marvel said wanting to hug him.
"Nah I was talking to him." Clint pointed to Iron Man but embraced a hug from Ms Marvel.
"Ohh am I glad you showed up." Ms Marvel said breaking the hug.
"Well its lucky for you I never miss." Hawkeye smirked, it was then that Ms Marvel turned her attention back to Korra.
"Korra! Korra! Wake up!" She tried shaking her but though she was breathing she couldn't wake up.
She suddenly had visions and saw people she recognised older versions of Toph, Sokka, and her predecessor Avatar Aang. The vision told her this was a point in the past and it looked like Aang was about to attack someone.
The vision ended in a flash and she was stirring from her unconscious state. She looked up and saw Kamala and the other Avengers standing above her.
"K..Kamala?" She breathed.
"Korra! You're okay!" Ms Marvel exclaimed as she hugged her. As she did everyone looked to see Tenzin approaching them.
"Korra! Kamala!" Tenzin cried. He then noticed the woman dressed in an Equalist uniform and was about to attack when Cap stopped him.
"Tenzin stop! She's with us." Cap assured, while weary Tenzin took the super soldiers word for it. He saw the Chi Blockers scattered across the floor.
"What happened here?" Tenzin asked.
Just then Korra remembered. "Amon! He..he ambushed me, and Kamala tried to save me."
"He didn't…" Ms Marvel asked and to answer her question Korra tried to make fire, she managed to produce a small flame.
"No he didn't take my bending." Korra said.
Ms Marvel tried to enlarge her fist, and it grew to a large size. "Same here."
"Oh thank goodness." Tenzin said kneeling down to their level. "Are you both okay?"
"Yeah I'm…"
"Korra, are you sure?" Kamala interrupted her.
It was then that Korra's eyes started tearing up and had a full on break down. She just embraced Ms Marvel in a hug as she sobbed into her scarf.
"I was so terrified, I felt so helpless." Korra sobbed as Ms. Marvel comforted her.
"Its okay, he's gone its over now." Ms Marvel said softly as Tenzin came to comfort them both.
"Kamala I'm so sorry for everything I said. You were right, you and Tenzin were right I've been scared this whole time!" Korra admitted between sobs. "I've never felt like this before and ... and I just , I don't know what to do!"
"No one does." Kamala said with tears of her own. "But your not alone in this, we're all here with you."
"She's right." Tenzin said as he embraced his student in a hug. "Admitting your fears is the first and most difficult step in overcoming them."
This touching scene was witnessed by the other Avengers. They saw no point in trying to follow Amon, they'd done all they could for tonight.
Later:
Everyone soon returned to the island, and Kamala helped Korra to her room. She was tucked up in bed and Kamala and Tenzin left her to sleep. They met with the other Avengers in the dining room. Black Widow was now back in her normal uniform. They stood up as they saw Kamala and the airbendng master come in.
"Hows the kid?" Natasha asked.
"She's resting." Tenzin explained before turning to Kamala. "You were right about Korra, I'm grateful you were there to help her Kamala."
"Yeah except for the part where I got caught too, I was so helpless I couldn't do anything to stop Amon." Kamala voiced.
"Hey you did all you could in a difficult situation Kamala, I know I would've done the same thing." Natasha comforted her with a hand on her shoulder. "For what it's worth you were pretty badass." She offered a fist bump which Kamala accepted.
"I'm just glad you and Clint showed up when you did." Kamala thanked.
"Indeed, the two of you have my gratitude for helping Korra." Tenzin bowed in gratitude to the spy and archer.
"No problem chief, just doing our job." Hawkeye shrugged."Oh by the way names Clint Barton, code name Hawkeye, and this is Natasha Romanoff code name Black Widow."
"A pleasure." Tenzin noted.
Tony then moved onto another subject. "So Nat how long have you been hanging with the Equalists?"
Natasha decided to share her story. "Well ever since that light back in Siberia I woke up here in the city, it wasn't New York so I decided to blend in. Some days later I saw Kamala and this Avatar Korra at a press conference at City hall and kept tabs on them ever since."
Kamala smiled in knowing one of her heroes was watching over her. "Really?"
"Yeah by the way kid, glad to know you put those stealth skills to good use getting into that area." Nat winked. "Anyway soon after I managed to find Clint who somehow ended up in a trash heap behind the arena."
"Not as bad as it sounds." Clint pointed out.
"As for the Equalists, when I saw you guys going into Amons rally and seeing what he was capable of I got suspicious, so I've been in deep cover ever since waiting for you guys to show up. When Clint wasn't at the Probending matches." Natasha then pointed out.
"Hey sue me I'm a fan of contact sport!" Clint protested. "By the way your friends in the Fire ferrets did great Kamala."
"So the Chi Blocker who helped me, that was you?" Steve suspected.
"Yeah sorry Cap I couldn't blow my cover, but when I heard Amon had been challenged by the Avatar I decided it was time to act, hence why I had Clint send that message." Nat explained.
"Oh this one." Tony said as he used his armour gauntlet to play said message. "Broken Arrow! Repeat! Broken Arrow!"
"Really?" Tony said with raised eyebrows.
"What it's catchy?" Clint protested. "It was Kates idea. It's the code we use in case anything goes wrong or need immediate help."
Though everyone was glad that the team was mostly reassembled there was still a matter to consider. "So what do we do now? Amons still out there, we were lucky tonight but he'll be back."
"I know." Cap said. "He's made it clear that he has a plan for this city, and since we're no closer to locating Thor or Bruce we need to find another way to let them know where we are."
He then turned to Tenzin. "Tenzin, tomorrow morning, I need you to call for a press conference at City Hall."
"A press conference what on earth for?" Tenzin asked.
"Its time for the city to know who we are." Steve said with a serious tone in his voice.
The following morning:
Millions of people were gathered outside of Republic City hall, many included reporters and photographers. On stage Chief Beifong was present as was Councilman Tarrlok and the other representatives. Tenzin then stood up to the microphone.
"People of Republic City, I have called this press conference today regarding recent events. As you all know Avatar Korra challenged Amon to a duel, but to tell you all that happened someone has made a request to be known." Tenzin announced. "Captain Steve Rogers." He introduced.
Soon enough Steve in his uniform with his shield in hand stepped up to the microphones. "Thank you councilman Tenzin." He thanked as he looked out to the crowd.
"My name is Captain Steve Rogers, you all don't know me but you do know of Ms Marvel." Captain America introduced as she stepped onto the stage. "You are all bewildered by her and her abilities and a lot of you have questions of all that has happened these past few days. It's time you knew the truth."
The press and audience listened intently for what the stranger was about to say. "Myself and Ms Marvel are not of this world or universe, we were brought from our own dimension by fate." Cap explained. "If you do not believe me well heres the proof."
Suddenly Iron Man swooped in from above startling the people below he hovered over the stage then landed on the stage. Soon after Black Widow and Hawkeye appeared on the stage standing by their leader and young Avenger. The press had more questions than ever before and took photos of the group.
"As for the events of last night, Avatar Korra challenged Amon to a duel and he answered the call but only to come outnumbering her with his Chi Blockers. He did this to insight fear in this city!" The press gasped at this revelation. "However your Avatar is unharmed and continues her campaign against these Equalists. Amon believes in equality yet he brings vast numbers to outnumber one. He does not intend to bring equality but war."
In the Probending Gym the radio was on and Mako and Bolin listened well to Captain America's speech.
"…He has made his intentions known, which is why we have come fourth today to declare our intentions! To stand with the Avatar in the protection of this city.…."
In the Future Industries complex Asami too was listening to the radio as was her father. "…To fight for the true balance that her predecessor intended for this land, for benders and non benders to coexist in peace…
Elsewhere listening from afar in Republic City park from a radio in the huts, someone else was listening with intent.
"…To show Amon, that the sins of years ago should not define the present day. The Avatar won the 100 year war, but he did not do so alone, and now neither shall Avatar Korra. For assembled we are strong, and now we forever fight as one!…"
The figure picked up something from the ground, it was a hammer that was starting to spark with what looked like thunder. While elsewhere in the slums under the city the homeless community were listening to this speech, and one of them had torn pants and a blue jacket with brown hair and glasses, as he listened his eyes briefly shone bright green.
City Hall:
"We may not be heroes to you not yet, but we. are…" Cap then raised his shield as it glistened in the sun.
"THE AVENGERS!"
He announced as a banner sporting their logo was dropped from the hall. The press then bombarded the Avengers with questions after questions while Chief Beifong looked unamused just what she needed, more costumed vigilantes in her city.
"Do you intend to stop only the Equalists or the Triads too?" One reporter asked.
"Do you really come from an alternate world?" Another asked.
"Do you know of Avatar Korra's condition?" One reporter asked. "Did Amon take her bending?"
"Will you work with Chief Beifong or join Councilman Tarrloks task force?" Another reporter asked.
"Avatar Korra is okay and her bending intact, but Amon is still out there, and if he's listening…" Iron Man then said. "As of right now, your days are numbered."
With that the Avengers walked off stage with the press still bombarding them with questions. While Tenzin walked with them. "No further questions no further questions." He insisted.
Soon the Avengers were inside City Hall but then almost on cue Tarrlok approached them. "Quite a rousing speech there captain I do admire your dedication to your cause, and I do hope Avatar Korra makes a full recovery, and returns to my task force soon, I do hope we can work together."
"Yeah right, and by the way Tarrlok, on Korra's behalf she's resigned from your task force as of today!" Ms Marvel said.
"Nor will The Avengers join your task force, as when last I checked we aren't your hired guns." Captain America agreed with a serious tone.
"Your media stunt may have worked with Korra but it won't work for us so deal with it!" Ms Marvel said.
"Plus from what I heard councilman what happened that provoked Korra into issuing that challenge was partly your doing." Black Widow then spoke.
"My dear I am merely trying to ensure our cities safety Korra's choice was her own." Tarrlok said.
"Right, well let me make this clear right now." Black Widow then said getting in Tarrlok's face. "You try any of that with her again and I'll make sure the media knows of how the Northern Watertribes representatives coercion of the Avatars actions was what nearly cost her bending at the hands of a terrorist."
Tarrlok tried to maintain his arrogant demeanour but, he was feeling more intimidated by this widows bite. With that the Avengers left with Tenzin close behind them.
"Good day Tarrlok." Tenzin said with a rather smug expression.
"See ya ponytail man." Ms Marvel cracked which resulted in Tarrlok scowling at the young Avenger.
Once a distance away Natasha was still a little weary of the councilman. "I think we need to keep an eye on him." She said to Tony.
"You think?" He replied.
"No I mean we really need to keep an eye on him, call it instinct but theres something off about that guy." Natasha admitted.
Elsewhere:
In a secret hideout the lieutenant and Amon had just heard the recent announcement on the radio. Of the non benders who stood up to him last night.
"It is now clear that these non benders…these…Avengers, are a clear threat to our plans. It would seem I've underestimated the Avatar as she did me." Amon realised.
Before the lieutenant could say anything suddenly the rear wall exploded startling them. Out of the smoke came men in yellow and grey armoured suits with gas masks and armed with laser guns. The Chi Blockers and lieutenant were about to attack until a blast of purple energy blasted them to the floor. While Amon stood still standing.
Emerging from the smoke was none other than MODOK himself with his AIM agents. "Greetings Amon, please forgive the intrusion." He greeted.
"Who, or what are you?" Amon demanded.
"I am MODOK, I come with a proposition. For I understand you wish to rid this city of the Bending plague in this city. I myself seek to rid the world of super powers and now it seems we have a common interest." MODOK explained.
"What pray tell do you believe you can offer me in my quest for equality?" Amon asked.
"The means to rid us of not only this Avatar Korra, but also….The Avengers." MODOK explained growling at the very mention of earths mightiest heroes.
Amon took a moment and while bewildered by the appearance of this giant headed individual. He could tell he was not of this world like these Avengers, judging by their use of weaponry. If he could be of some aid no Bender would dare challenge him.
"I am listening." He finally said, to which MODOK smirked.
Authors Notes:DUN DUN DUN! Whew that was the longest one yet, but worth it. The Avengers have finally confronted Amon and most of all Black Widow and Hawkeye are now among them, and Korra now knows its never a weakness to admit we are afraid and hopefully she'll recover from this traumatic experience. Now I have made a few changes to the canon episode such as Mako and Bolin finding out that Korra was scared of what happened at the Equalist rally, because as her friends and teammates they deserved to know.
Also I hope you all noticed the Stan Lee cameo I placed after Mako met the loverly Asami, it felt right to pay tribute to a great man. And Stan wherever you are up there thank you sir for the great comics, stories and films that have inspired a new generation of heroes.
Now next Chapter is going to be an original one, I know people have been asking about that and don't worry I do have one in the works. But now MODOK has finally appeared what does this mean for our heroes?
Well until next time. AVENGERS ASSEMBLE!
