A/N: I know it has been an awful long time since the last chapter was uploaded and I apologise for that but this has a bastard of a chapter to wrote, in fact I written it differently about 6 times and have erased each and every one of them in the last couple of months because none of them felt right. So here is a little filler gap chapter for you before we get to the sentencing and the reasons for it, hope you like it. I will try to get the next chapter out as soon as I can.
The crowd in the hall shifted uneasily at Jon's words, he was the last one that anyone would have thought would speak on behalf of the man who had almost killed him. Even the king and Lord Stark looked shocked when Jon had stepped forward.
"What is the meaning of this Jon?"
Lord Stark asked his nephew when he finally found the words, the king however still sat open-mouthed in his seat, Ned stared at his nephew wondering just what it was that Jon was up to.
Jon stared back at his uncle and glanced towards where his father looked shocked, he knew that no one in the great hall would believe he felt anything but disgust and hatred for the man that stood condemned before them all, he knew that they had expected him to keep his own counsel and allow the oath-breaker to be executed or if the king was feeling in a generous mood, sentenced to the wall but Jon knew that both sentences would be bad for the kingdom of Westeros.
He took a deep breath as he considered what it was he was going to say and the impact they would have.
"Your Majesty, my Lord Uncle, I know that you would like to see justice done for what you consider to be an act of treason, an attempt on my life but what happened was nothing but an unfortunate accident."
"UNFORTUNATE ACCIDENT, HE TRIED TO KILL YOU BOY!" the king bellowed at his words.
Jon held up a hand, palm forward to the king.
"I know you think he was trying to kill me but his sword only ended going towards my neck because you my king, my father, shouted and therefore caused me to stumble, had you not done that, then we would not all be standing here now waiting for a verdict to be made in regards of Lord Jamie."
People stared in disbelieve at Jon's word, they thought him mad, surely Jon did not believe that the man standing trial had not tried to kill him, everyone who had witnessed it had seen what had happened. There was a sound of movement as people jostled their feet and raised their voices at Jon's words but Jon held his place and stared back at his uncle and the king, his father.
He knew what many in the hall was thinking but he also knew that Lord Tywin would not stand idly by and allow his eldest son to be killed. Such an action on part to the king could plunge the kingdom in war. A war that cost the throne dearly and not just in money Jon knew but n the lives of its people.
"I know you all I am mad in thinking the man next to me, the man who now stands trial is guilty of trying to kill me but I say he is not, it was simply an accident, he thought he was protecting his nephew and was concerned that the two kingsgard who should have been with Prince Tommen were not present and that the young prince was in effect unprotected."
Jon turned his head, looking each of the people in the great hall in the eye as he addressed them all, he could still see the disbelief in many of their faces but despite what it seemed he knew what he was doing. By standing up for Jaime Lannister and hopefully the king might listen to him, he knew there was little chance of it but he might and he might then be able to stop the kingdom falling into war.
Besides not only would his actions and words possibly stop a war breaking out, he thought and hoped, that there was a chance that Jaime Lannister might still have some small shred of honour left and realise that what Jon was doing would save his miserable life and therefore, he would owe him a life debt. A life debt which Jon would make damn sure to collect on one day.
Jon turned back to the table where the king sat pondering his words, he could see that his father was trying to decide if Jon was mad or if his words made sense, Jon hoped that the king would choose wisely. He knew that the king hated Jaime Lannister with a passion it was something that was well known throughout the kingdom but he could do nothing about the man, after all his killing of the previous king was one of the reasons why Robert now sat on the throne. After all Jaime could have claimed the throne himself after he had killed the mad king but he had not.
The king glared at him, his eldest and pondered the words that Jon had just spoken, he knew that on had a point but he also knew that Jon was wrong in his assumption that the kingslayer had not been trying to kill him, he knew that the kingslayer given a chance would kill Jon but he was also aware of what Lord Tywin would do if Jaime was executed for his actions.
A/N: I know many of you might be screaming at the screen right now at the way this story seems to be going but remember one thing about the Game of Thrones, one thing that is stated throughout it, it is all about playing the great game and the game is not always what you would expect or want but rather who comes out on top.
