Chapter 11: Welcome to Combat Training.

(Tony)

"Interesting groups..." I said as I was walking to Mr. Emboar's office after I watched the argument between those teams.

I really have a bad feeling that that Team Royals is gonna do something sooner or later. It's not best to assume but maybe I should keep an eye on them just in case. I'll have to think about that later on.

I was forced out of my thoughts when I had bumped into the Pokémon I was looking for.

"Ah, good morning Tony. Just the Pokemon I was looking for." Emboar said upbeat as usual.

"Oh, sorry Mr. Emboar. Didn't see you there. What's my assignment for today?" I asked getting straight to the point.

"Oh it's quite alright. Today you'll be helping Mr. Sar in Combat Training." He told me before I perked up a little.

"Combat Training you say?" I said with a smirk.

(10 minutes later)(Flara)

*groan* Oh this is just swell...

[The Combat Training classroom is kind of like a huge dojo room with the entrance being two doors, training mats for fighting made up the floor, and students sat around the room on the floor.]

I just got to Combat Training and it's already not looking good. I'm the only one in my group of friends here so I don't know most of these people and the worst of it is that Cassidy and Oliver are in my class. Luckily, Cassidy sat on the other side. Unluckily...

"Come on Flare baby. Whenz iz youze gonna get with Olliver?" Oliver asked as he sat right next to me.

"For the last time, never in my life Oliver. Stop asking." I said again annoyed. "You need me to get Tepper to beat you up again?"

"That fight waz a fluke. Come on babe. Stop lying to ya self. Youze can't resist me." Oliver said.

"Ugh, you're just as bad as Drew with Snive." I stated while facepalming, irritated. "When is this class starting so I can get away from you."

"HELLOOOOO CLAAAAAAASS!" Yelled an over the top, gruff voice from the ceiling. Startling everyone. A male Sawk then jump down through the ceiling and struck a fighting pose. "MY NAME IS MR. SAR AND I'LL BE TEACHING YOU ABOUT *strikes another pose* CLOSE QUARTERS COMBAT!"

There was an awkward silence as I assume everyone sweat dropped.

I sure as hell did.

At the silence, Mr. Sar straightened himself out and started scratching on the back of his head with an embarrassed smirk on his face.

"Heh, sorry bout that. I get a little too excited sometimes." He told us before fake coughing and regaining his composure. "Good morning class. My name is Mr. Sar and I'll be teaching important moves and defense in close quarters combat. Now I know some Pokémon prefer using long range attacks a lot more but having at least one close quarters move in case your enemy gets too close for comfort. Now who here would classify themselves as a long range battler or would like to become one?"

A few Pokémon raises there hand, including me.

I really wanna master long range battling like my mother.

"Hmm, that's good. Long range attackers are an essential part in any exploration team. However, even long range attackers should have at least one close range attack. Mystery dungeons tend to be mostly random mazes containing narrow halls so you never know when a dungeon Pokemon may sneak up on you out of nowhere. That close quarters move can mean the difference between life and death in those dungeons." He stated before clapping his hands once and turning around to the other side of the class. "Now! Who here can say that they're an up close fighter."

A few Pokemon raised their hands, including Oliver. "Right he'e teach, best one in this place." He said cockily. I rolled my eyes.

Pfft, sure you are.

"I'd like to test that statement." Said a familiar fire monkey's voice as the door opened. I looked to see the it was Tony coming in.

He's coming into my class today? I thought dumbly dazed as I stared at him walking to Mr. Sar.

Of course he is, now you're gonna embarrass yourself in front of him. I thought back and grew slightly nervous.

"Oh crap..." I said quietly. He then looked my way and shot me with one of his cool smiles which immediately calmed me down. I sighed and wave to him which he returned. All the while, I noticed Cassidy shoot a glare at me from her spot in the room upon seeing the interaction.

(Tony)

Okay, I got lost getting to the place, I admit it. I should really get a map or something from Mr. Emboar before I leave his office again. Anyway, finally found the dojo place and was about to go in till I heard talking.

"Now! Who here can say that they're an up close fighter." Said Mr. Sar.

"Right he'e teach, best one in this place." A student said cockily.

"Hmm looks like we got ourselves a bragger. *smirks* Time to teach him a lesson." I said quietly before opening the door and walking inside. "I'd like to test that statement."

As I walked in, I took a quick glance around to see who was here. I saw a few young and older Pokémon that I never have seen around before. I then saw the Meowstic named Cassidy if I remember correctly who immediately waved to me give some sort of seductive look which I quickly rolled my eyes and looked away. I then saw sitting next to the Floatzel bragger was Flara who looked slightly nervous about something, the class maybe? I gave her a slight smile which seemed to calm her down. She threw me a smile as well and waved, which I returned with a nod.

Seems like I have some sort of effect on her, wonder how.

I then turned my attention to the Sawk teacher who made his way towards me.

"Ah, you must be Tony. *extends hand to me* please to meet you." Mr. Sar said.

"*shakes hand* Pleasure's all mine meeting such a great close quarters martial artist such as yourself." I said honestly as he grinned widely.

"Ahem!" Someone coughed loudly. Me and Mr. Sar look to see that it was the Floatzel. "Youze iz kind of interrupting something he'e."

"Hmm? Oh right, seriously my bad you guys." I apologized getting serious again. "I'll be here to help Mr. Sar with Combat Training. Now, who was one that said they were the best fighter in this place?"

"That would be me." The Floatzel said standing up smugly.

"Hmm, is that so? Then you wouldn't mind showing the class what the best can do right?" I asked as the rest of the class started whispering amongst themselves.

"A close quarters fight on the first day? With a student and trainer of all people?" Said on of the older Pokemon boy.

"Wait? The Monferno's a trainer? He looks like he can be a student." Said a younger boy.

"He must be super strong to be a trainer at such a young age." Said a young Pokemon girl.

"Doesn't matter. Oliver is gonna beat him. I've seen him fight and he's got the type advantage." Said an older boy in a "matter of fact-ly" tone.

"Of course I'll accept." The Floatzel named Oliver said smugly. "This'll be a piece of cake. And I'll show everyone that youze not a real train-a."

"Hmph, we'll see." I said to him before turning to Mr. Sar and asking "You don't mind us doing this right? I don't want to interrupt and waste class time."

"It's more than alright. In fact, this will be a great beginning to our first Close Quarters Combat Training class. Just for the sake of the class though, only use close quarters moves." Mr. Sar said.

"No problem." I said as I went to one side of the mat in the dojo while Oliver went to the other. "You ready?"

"Youze is going down. I won't be hol'in back." Oliver said while getting in a battle stance.

"I hope you don't." I said putting my team scarf over my mouth and getting into a battle stance.

(No one's POV)

There was a silence in the air, the two opponents glared daggers at each other. Everyone around was anxiously waiting to see who would make the first move, no one more so than Flara who would been at the edge of her seat with all the excitement filling her from seeing her crush in a battle.

NOT A CRUSH!

Mhmm, sure...

The silence had been broken when...

"AQUA TAIL!" Oliver jumped into the air, did a front flip while his tail turned bright, glowing blue, and came down on Tony. He quickly side step before he hit the floor, the impact splashing a little water on Tony but did no real damage.

"MACH PUNCH!" Tony yelled out as he clenched his now all bright, white, right arm and launched a really fast punch. The punch was so fast that it caught Oliver immediately after he land. He was still on his tail so he couldn't react quick enough. The punch connected and launched Oliver a bit away from Tony, who quickly got ready for another attack. The entire class flinched as the first attack had connected.

"Now that's what I call a good counter. Take mental notes of the battle everyone." Mr. Sar had said.

"Pfft, lucky shot." Oliver got up and began charging at Tony before immediately yelling out "AQUAJET!"

Oliver's body was quickly surrounded by water and he blasted towards Tony with amazing speed. Tony had managed to dodge the first attack as Oliver flew past him. Oliver made a long turn, wetting a few Pokemon a little who were next to him turning. He shot towards Tony again who prepared to dodge again. Tony moved to the side again but then...

"AQUA TAIL!" Oliver's announcement was somewhat gargled by the water so Tony didn't hear him clearly. The Aquajet quickly dissipated and Oliver swung his bright blue tail at Tony who didn't have time to react this time. He braced himself as Oliver landed his attack right into Tony's stomach, causing him to grunt and bow his body over Oliver's tail. More Pokemon winced at that, especially Flara who has been extra invested in this fight.

"Nice combo there Oliver, way to mix it up." Mr. Sar congratulated.

"What he said. That was a good combo." Tony said looking up at him.

"You damn right it was. Youze ready to give up." Oliver smirk while I smirked under my mask.

"But because of it, you left yourself trapped." Tony stated.

"What?" He questioned before Tony tightened his hold on Oliver's tail. Oliver's eyes went wide and he said "W-wait?"

"CLOSE COMBAT!" Tony exclaimed before he launched a left hook to Oliver's face and then uppercutted him with the same fist. Tony then launched a roundhouse kick to the right side of his face before grabbing on his tail, swinging him into the air, slamming him on the ground, and then swinging him a little bit away from me. A dark purple aura covered my body for a second before shattering and disappearing in the air. Oliver had caught sight of that and got confused.

"The hell waz that?" Oliver said grunting as he slowly got up.

"That was what happens when you use a stat affecter type move. Close Combat is one of those moves. It's an attack that does massive damage but it lowers the users defense and special defense so it would not be a good idea to use it all the time." Tony explained to him.

"Good explanation Tony. Take a mental note kids." Mr. Sar said to the class.

"Why iz you tellin' me this? You could give me an advantage or somethin'." Oliver had said.

"Because it's my job now as a trainer to teach. This will all have been for nothing if I didn't teach something." Tony stated.

"*Grrr* I still don't believe youze a train-a. I will beat youze down." Oliver said before launching himself in the air and doing a front flip while yelling "AQUA TA-"

Halfway through Oliver's attack, Tony jumping up into the air while pulling down his mask from his mouth yelling "FLAME WHEEL!" Fire appeared out of his mouth and started to spin around into a flame wheel, rapidly closing in on Oliver. This had caught Oliver off guard, interrupting his attack entirely. Before the attack connected, hands appeared out of the flame wheel and grabbed Oliver's tail. This caused Oliver to spin around with the flame wheel towards the ground. Just before they hit the ground, the flame wheel dissipated and Tony swung Oliver over and slammed him into the the padded ground. Tony landed afterwards before he jumped a bit away as Oliver groaned loudly and slowly got up.

"Try not to be to flashy with your moves or else things like that could happen. The longer you take and the more you do to connect your attack, like say with a front flip in the air, the more time you give to your opponent to counter and/or dodge it." Mr. Sar stated.

"You okay Oliver? It's okay to stop the fight now. There's no need to keep going after all that, no offense." Tony said genuinely but it seems it only pissed Oliver off.

"Fuck you! I'm not done!" Oliver yelled before he put his paws together. A blue sphere grew in between them and Tony got back in a defensive stance after put his mask back up.

"RAIN DANCE!" He then threw the orb in the air. It hit the ceiling and the spot it hit formed dark clouds which quickly filled the ceiling. Thunder sounded before it started pouring hard. It didn't sit well with everyone in the dojo, who all groaned and tried to cover themselves, except for the water types. One Pokemon especially wasn't trill about the rain...

"AAAAAAHHHH, Oliver you asshole! What did I say about using Rain Dance around me!" Cassidy yelled at Oliver who ignored her.

"AQUAJET!" Oliver yelled in frustration. He coated himself in a brighter water than the Aquajet before and shot towards Tony. Tony dodge it quickly as Oliver shot past him only to quickly turn a launch at Tony again. Rain Dance boosts the power of all water type. In the case of Aquajet, it boost the attack power and raises the time it's active. Tony has been dodging for a while now, Oliver was just no letting up.

"Grrr, stop movin' and let me finish ya!" Oliver yelled out turning again.

All of a sudden, Tony stopped moving, faced Oliver who had just finished another turn and blast towards him, and got into a defensive stance. The Pokemon took notice of how dangerously close Oliver was getting and start questioning him.

"What is he doing!?" An older girl said.

"He may be good, but I don't think he can take on an Aquajet with a force that powerful." Said an older boy.

"Dodge it! He's gonna hit you!" Yelled Flara who would have been on the edge of her seat in fear and excitement if they were sitting in seats.

A foot before Oliver's attack connected, his Aquajet had suddenly dissipated. Time seem to slow as Oliver flew defenseless towards Tony, Oliver sharing his stunned and shocked expression with the rest of the trainees. Tony only smirked under his mask.

"CLOSE COMBAT!" Tony yelled as he used his right arm to uppercut Oliver more into the air a little. Tony then jumped up to meet him and used his left hand to downward punched Oliver to the floor. Oliver hit and bounced back up into the air. Tony landed and lastly roundhouse kicked Oliver, causing him to fly to the other end of the room, off the battle mats, over the trainees, and into a stack of mats sitting next to the wall, back first. Everyone saw his eyes swirled, signaling the end of the fight.

There was a massive silence as the Rain Dance ended before Mr. Sar motioned to Tony and yelled "The battle has ended! The winner is Tony!"
