Unfortunately, being vampires made the process of buying a horse more complicated than it would have been for humans. Horses are sensitive animals, and tend to be wary of vampires. Finding one that would tolerate being ridden by a vampire was an ordeal.
After many fruitless weeks of visiting farms, horse shows, and various strange small-town festivals where horses were sold, searching for an animal that suited their needs, Damon was relieved when they finally found a horse that not only had no problem with being ridden by vampires, but actually liked Rose. More than that, the two of them bonded immediately.
"It's rare to see a horse take to someone so completely this quick," the farmer who owned the horse said to Damon, as they watched Rose pet the horse's face.
When she lifted her hand away, the horse gently headbutted her shoulder and made small unhappy horse noises.
Rose laughed, and said "Okay, okay," and started petting the horse again.
"Yep, there's no two ways about it, that ol' boy is definitely her horse now," the farmer said. (Damon, of course, would still have to actually buy the horse from him.)
