A/N:So this story has been sitting in my to do list for a while. I know that I have tons in progress, I guess I never learn haha. I've been struggling to write lately and it's been nice to be able to write tonight during the premiere's commercials. Enjoy.

Kim Burgess was a cop at the 16th District and right now, she was running late. Her alarm had picked the perfect morning not to ring and it was a phone call from her old partner Hailey Upton and roommate that had her scrambling out of bed. There was no time for coffee, she'd have to settle for the disgusting one at the precinct. She was texting as she walked up the stairs to find the desk Sargent in a pissy mood.

"Burgess, you're late." Shit. She was really hoping to go through un-detected.

"Yeah sorry about that Sarge, won't happen again." She went to the locker room quickly to drop her bag and she was out just in time to meet her new partner. She was unlucky enough to have a revolving door of them since her old partner had been promoted to Intelligence at the 21st.

"You're riding with Officer Michaels, right out of the academy." She could see the satisfied smirk on her Sargent's face and if looks could kill, she would have murdered him.

"Come on Michaels, the bad guys won't catch themselves." Kim snatched the keys from the front desk and didn't wait around before storming out to find the cruiser they were assigned to. She texted Hailey about her partner before they started the day.

Hailey climbed the stairs to the 21st and spotted Jay waiting for her with a hot cup of coffee. "Morning." She smiled at him. It wasn't a secret that they were dating but since she transferred here, assigned to the same unit as him, the PDA was non-existing, Hailey not waiting the gossip mill to escalate more than it already was.

"Did you manage to get Kim out of bed okay?" He chuckled as they climbed the stairs into the bullpen together.

"Not sure." Her phone dinged and she saw an incoming text from Kim. "Shit." She threw it on her desk and put her coat over her chair as Jay gave her a curious look. "She was late and she's stuck with a very green officer."

"Damn. Molly's?"

"Definitely, she'll need it after the day she's going to get." They were the first two in, Voight in his office as usual. They were waiting for the other four and surprisingly enough, Adam and Kevin were the next ones to arrive, Olinsky and Antonio taking the rear.

"You don't have to stop talking on my account." Adam always loved to rib them whenever he could.

"Nah it's good, we're done talking behind your back." Jay and Kevin chuckled.

"Alright, knock it off, we have a new case." Voight came out of his office with Antonio in tow and everyone went to work.

Kim couldn't take it anymore. She couldn't understand for the life of her how this guy had made it through the academy and she desperately missed Hailey. She was happy for her friend; working in Intelligence at the 21st was every cop's dream and right now she was jealous. When she walked back up the stairs of the district, she was about to crash and burn and all she wanted to do now was go shower and head to Molly's like Hailey's text had suggested.

"How was your day officer Burgess?" Her follow officer was forgotten and all she had now was a desk Sargent far too satisfied with himself.

"It was shit." She slammed the keys on the counter. "Where the hell did we get this guy?" she hissed her displeasure. "Whatever idiot made him graduate from the academy should be the one to get stuck with him." She threw over her shoulder before going to change. She texted Hailey before heading back home for a hot shower and then directly to Molly's.

It was late when Intelligence wrapped the case and both Hailey and Jay were looking for some down time to relax.

"Any word from Kim?"

"Not good." She showed him her phone as they walked down towards their car.

"I think she'll need more than a night at Molly's after today."

"What she needs is get out there and date other people." Hailey concluded.

"Hailey, don't." Her smile told him everything he needed to know, and he wasn't sure he liked it.

"I didn't do anything."

"Yet." He chuckled. "I'll meet you at Molly's." They kissed in the back lot and went their separate way. Hailey stopped by her and Kim's place quickly to shower before heading out.

Kim was already tipsy by the time Hailey found her through the crowd at Molly's. "Haileyyyyy." She stood from her stool clumsily and hugged her friend. "Where's Halstud?" She giggled.

"Right here." He chuckled. "Rough day huh?"

"I'm surprised I'm still alive." She rolled her eyes dramatically. "Another shot Christopher." She called the older firefighter as he walked past her.

"Are you sure it's a good idea Kim?" He chuckled, leaning against the counter.

"I had a rough day, Christopher; I need a pick me UP!"

"A last one." Hailey told Christopher. She'd have to drive Kim back home and as much as she loved her, she didn't want her to puke in her truck. "Come on Kim, let's grab a table." She laughed, leading Kim away from the bar so she could get some details out of her shift from hell.

"I really miss you in that cruiser." She leaned against Hailey's shoulder. "Sargent douchebag hates me; he's doing it on purpose to pair me with total incompetent idiots."

"He's an ass." Hailey groaned. "I'm sure you'll find a new partner that you work well with."

"I had one." Jay chuckled.

"She is pretty great." He agreed but he got daggers thrown his way through her eyes.

"I don't like you anymore." She had gotten to know Jay better since Hailey had started dating him, a few months before Hailey transferred to the 21st.

"I see the guys coming in, I'll leave you girls alone." Jay and Hailey kissed before Kim waved at him with a smile. She watched him go meet up with two guys, a large, giant black man and another one with the brightest smile she had ever seen.

"Who are those guys?" Kim pointed shamelessly in the boys' direction.

"Atwater and Ruzek, they work in our unit." Hailey chuckled.

"Which one is which?" Hailey pointed them separately as she names them both but kept an eye on Kim and her smirk only grew, and the clogs in her brain started turning. Her eyes found Jay's next and winked at him only to have him shake his head at her in recognition.

"Come on sweetie, let's get you home." Hailey took the last of her water before getting up about an hour later.

"I'm not working tomorrow, Hailey, I'm staying."

"Oh no you're not." She chuckled, getting her up on her feet. She walked past the boys' table, stopping to kiss Jay good night.

"She had enough?" He chuckled.

"Not yet." Kim giggled. "But Hailey won't let me have more." She pouted, making all three boys' chuckle.

"You'll thank me later Burgess. I'll see the three of you in the morning." The drive back was filled with Kim's giggles and her vocal thoughts about Hailey's other two partners. Hailey kept everything tucked in her sober mind so she could plot her next move with Jay. With some difficulty, she managed to get Kim into bed and get into hers as well. Since joining Intelligence, she never knew when she would be called so she took all the hours of sleep that she could.

The next morning, Hailey got ready under Kim's heavy snores. She knew she was off, and she needed the sleep, so she left her with a note and a coffee machine ready for brewing before she made her way to the district.

"Have any trouble bringing Kim up last night?"

"It's been enlightening." She climbed up the stairs, smirking at Jay over her shoulder.

"Feel like sharing with the rest of the class?" He chuckled as she placed her hand in the palm scanner.

"Let's just say that Kim has very loose lips when she inebriated." She motioned for the breakroom with her head. "How was last night with the boys?"

"It was fun, you know how it is with those two."

"Well Kim had some things to say about Ruzek on the way home last night, I think we got something going on there."

"Come on Hailey." He poured himself a fresh cup of coffee. "Ruzek just came out of a relationship and he's not looking to meet anyone new. You can't force people together."

"Not forcing them, just persuade them into something that could be potentially great."

"Look, I saw the way Kim was after that break-up. You literally had to pick up the pieces. She needs to find herself before she jumps into anything else. You need to listen to me and not put your nose in this."

"Don't you think that they would be good together?"

"I mean it Hailey, stop what you're thinking." He took his cup and returned to his desk. Hailey returned to her desk as well. The day was slow, a rare occurrence for them, but it gave Hailey plenty of opportunity to think of the perfect way to get Kim and Adam in the same room and talking. She waited for the whole team to be gone in the locker room, Ruzek staying behind for paperwork as usual.

"So Ruzek, you have anything planned this Friday?"

"Nah, just a quiet night at home." He shrugged.

"Feel like joining Jay and I at the restaurant?"

"Come on Hales, you don't need me to play third wheel to the two of you. You don't need me to crash a romantic dinner with my sunny disposition."

"It's not a romantic dinner. It's just Sheffield's, there's a game on, that's all."

"Alright, I'll be there, seven?"

"Perfect, I'll see you there." She tapped him on the shoulder and left to grab her stuff. Jay was hanging out with his brother Will for the evening so Hailey could put the rest of her plan in motion. When she slipped inside the apartment, she could hear music coming out of the kitchen and smell Kim's Chicken Parm. "Someone's been busy." She grabbed a beer out of the fridge.

"Just a little something to say thanks for dragging my ass back up here last night."

"I had fun." She assured her. "But what about we go hang out at Sheffield's, grab a few beers, watch the game, just hang out?"

"Yeah, that sounds like a plan. Come on, dinner is ready." They enjoyed a good meal with a few beers and a good laugh before watching a movie and calling it a night.

The rest of the week went by quickly and Kim found herself leaving the 16th, ready to start a quiet evening with Hailey. She had texted her the details of the reservation being under her name and that she was waiting for her there already. When she got there, she tried scanning the crowd for Hailey, but not finding her. She was led to a table by the host at the front.

"You're not Hailey." Kim stated the obvious.

"Neither are you." His laugh came from deep inside in his chest. "Looks like we've been set up."

"Listen, I should just go." She was suddenly nervous, fidgeting on her feet.

"Don't, stay, please."

"I don't know, I don't know you."

"How about we fix that." He stood up and extended his hand towards her. "Adam Ruzek."

"Kim Burgess." She smiled.

"So how about we grab a few drinks, talk a bit, watch the game, how does that sound?"

"Sounds good."

"Good." He walked around her and pulled her chair out so she could sit before ordering them a couple of beers. "To meeting new people." He winked at her, making her chuckle.

"To meeting new people." She agreed and clinked her bottle with his, throwing caution to the wind and giving this a shot.
