A/N: Sorry for the long time between updates but hopefully I'm back. I'm so happy with the reception this story has gotten so here's #3.
Kim had to admit that her day off shopping with Hailey had done her some good and taken her mind off all her problems. They had talked a bit about Adam, Hailey telling Kim what she knew of him, what it was like working for Voight, who had a singular reputation in the whole department. She envied her, complaining about her latest partners, wishing something good could come her way. She was getting ready for shift, muttering the whole time about partners and crappy Sargents.
"I swear, if he doesn't give me a half decent partner today, I might murder said partner." She grumbled as she started the coffee machine to make them both a cup to go.
"I'll be keeping my fingers crossed. Is it still okay if you give me a ride to the 21st? My car won't be ready until later today."
"Yeah, you're good." She nodded. "I'm surprised you don't have a case yet, you're usually gone by now."
"Keeping my fingers crossed for a slowish day." Hailey shrugged.
"Alright, the coffee is ready, are you?" They didn't have all that much time before Kim's shift started.
"Yeah, I'm good." The drive was spent chatting about random stuff and in no time, they were in front of the 21st. Kim got out to hug her friend when his voice made her giggle.
"That's an awful lot of PDA if you ask me."
"Shut up." She pulled out of her embrace with Hailey and smiled at Adam.
"I'm not complaining darlin' simply making an observation." He winked at her in amusement.
"That's just girl code. Hailey's got my back and I got hers." She shrugged. "What are the chances that I catch my new friend here this morning?"
"Universe has funny plans sometimes, friend." Hailey simply hung back and watched as the sparks flew between her best friend and partner. "So, new shift new partner?" Kim grunted at his question.
"No doubt he'll do his worst."
"Sarge." Hailey welcomes her desk Sargent as she walked by, stopping at their level.
"Blondie." She gave her a tight-lipped smile.
"Oh, I'd like to introduce you to my friend Kim Burgess."
"Blondie's old partner." Kim nodded, feeling uncomfortable under the older woman's stare. "With me." She motioned over her shoulder. Kim looked at both Adam and Hailey who shrugged their shoulders. "And shouldn't you two be upstairs? City won't save itself."
"On our way up Sarge." Adam gave her a mock salute and looked at Kim, silently telling her to follow the desk Sargent.
Kim did as requested and followed the older woman in the office on the right to the main entrance. "You have that ass of a desk Sargent Neiderwiener?"
"It's actually not his."
"Don't interrupt." Kim stood straight and waited. "He has a big mouth about putting you with shitty partners yes?"
"Yes." She simply said.
"Are you dating Ruzek?" She went straight for the kill.
"What? No." She took half a step back in defence.
"So, here's what is going to happen. We need to get you transferred to the 21st, where I will be your desk Sargent and damn faerie god mother. I will not pair you with a jack ass, I will find you a good partner, how does that sound?"
"I don't know what to say, Thank you, Sargent." Kim couldn't believe what was happening.
"Don't thank me just yet. Now get going, you're going to be late officer Burgess."
"Oh shit, yeah. Thanks again." She walked past her, seeing her name tag, Platt. She knew the woman would keep this over her head, maybe forever, but she was thankful nonetheless. She drove back to the 16th and arrived just in time.
"What do you think all of this is about?" Adam looked at Hailey as they walked up to the palm scanner.
"No idea, but Platt had that look in her eyes." They moved up only to get thrown back out with a brand new case. Adam rode shotgun with Kevin as they drove to the scene, his mind trying to figure out what Platt would want with Kim. Adam smirked when he saw who was on the scene.
"Connor, it's been a while." He extended his hand and shook the other Detective's hand with a smile.
"Yeah. Didn't know you guys took this kind of case."
"We just go where they tell us." He was joined by Jay and Hailey. "Detectives Halstead and officer Upton." Adam introduced both team members.
"Walker." Jay stuffed his hands in his coat pockets.
"What do you have?" Hailey asked outright, forgoing any kind of introduction.
The scene was tense, Adam not knowing what was going on. Jay had pissed off as a body language and Hailey was being snippy, her jaw muscles clenching ever so often. They walked through the scene before the other team left the scene, giving them the reins on the investigation.
"What was all that about?" Adam questioned Jay after they had gotten everything they needed, the three of them returning to their cars.
"What was all about what?" Jay asked, clearly not understanding what Adam was talking about.
"Don't play dumb with me Halstead. You being all pissed at Walker, Hailey being so to the point and snippy. What are you guys not telling me?"
"You've got to ask Kim." Hailey simply said before she took her spot shotgun in Jay's truck, leaving Adam with a million questions.
For the rest of shift, Adam wasn't able to get anything out either Jay or Hailey, both of them insisting that it was something that he needed to discuss with Kim. He often felt her eyes on him though and could catch her fiddling with her phone, no doubt messaging Kim.
Kim was surprised to get to the 16th with some minutes to spare but even that wasn't enough and she was met with a desk Sargent coaxing her closer.
"I had an interesting phone call this morning Burgess."
"Yeah?"
"It seems this is your last shift here, you're transferring to the 21st first thing tomorrow morning."
"What?" She was surprised that the move had been done so quickly.
"I don't know what you did, but I'd be careful what you wish for officer."
"I didn't do anything." She insisted.
"Go get changed and I have a special assignment for your last day." He smirked. That was it, she was done for now. She changed out quickly and returned to get her final partner.
"Who am I paired with today?" She questioned with her best smile.
"No one." His smirk left her feeling uncomfortable in her spot. "You will be giving out parking tickets."
"Oh come on Sarge, really? You really hate me that much." She growled, anger finally going up her throat.
"I hate officers that go behind others to get a move up in this department. Playing that game will only bring you a short career Burgess." He handed her the keys to her cruiser. "Enjoy your last shift in hell." Kim took the keys unceremoniously and tried to make the best of shift, texting Hailey about getting drunk after shift to forget the whole thing and celebrate a new start. What she wasn't expecting though was the text that she got back from her.
"Shit." Now she had another whole set of problems with it.
Adam walked into the locker room after wrapping up the case, exhausted, but finding Hailey sitting on the bench, hunched over, rifling through her locker.
"Hey, can we talk?"
"Listen Adam, I can't talk about that with you."
"Just give me something, please."
"It's complicated, but you really need to talk to Kim about it. I can't tell you the story for her."
"Do I need to be worried?"
"Are you saying that you have feelings for her?" She sat up straighter.
"No, at least not yet, but I'd like to know what I'm getting into."
"Not yet." She chuckled, knowing full well there was already a connection between the two. "Just talk to her Adam, she's worth it." She patted him on the shoulder before grabbing her duffle bag and walking out, giving Adam something to think about.
Adam drove back to his place, trying to sort through his thoughts and emotions. Hailey had asked the question that he thought he knew the answer to before. Emily and Justin had hurt him to his very core and it had been tough to pick himself up after that humiliation. Jay and Kevin had been an integral part of his recovery, refusing to let him throw a pity party and wallow in the alcohol like he had set himself in doing the following days of the whole debacle. He pulled his phone out of his back pocket as he pulled a beer out of his fridge. He fiddled with the idea of calling Kim, but at the same time didn't want to put that kind of pressure on her to answer personal questions. Just knowing there was a cheating ex in her picture, he knew how personal that was and not something one would want to revisit. He sent her a quick text before returning the phone to his back pocket, taking a pull of his beer, sitting on his balcony.
Kim got back home and her head was about to split open. She texted Hailey about cancelling their plans for the evening as she changed into a pair of yoga shorts and a sweater. Taking ibuprofen was her goal followed by a large glass of wine on her couch when her phone dinged. It was a text message from Adam that simply said to call him if she needed a friend to talk to. She sent him a quick reply and plopped down on the couch, tilting her head back and taking a deep breath. The knock on her door startled her and she grabbed her glass of wine, taking a sip to see who was on the other side of her door.
"Hey friend." His head was cocked and he offered her a soft smile.
"I'm really in need of one of those today." She smiled back at him, letting him inside. "Can I get you anything?"
"What you're having is fine by me." Adam couldn't stop his eyes from roaming her long, toned legs as she walked towards her kitchen, pouring him a glass. "So, crazy day?" He questioned as they sat on her couch.
"From hell." She signed.
"Tell me about it." He set his glass down on her table and pulled his legs upwards on the couch, giving her his full attention.
