Chapter 13

Gotham; May 5th, 13:21 EST

Diana clasped her hands together, raising them high above her head before coming down with such force into Amazo that it caused the asphalt beneath him to crack and break apart, impressing him deep into the street. It seemed to do little to slow the android down, however.

His arm shot up with lightning speed, his fist connecting with her jaw with a bone-shattering shot. Diana flew up into the air and into a thick steel beam of a building that was being constructed. She fell forward on her hands and knees, needing a moment to gather herself.

She shook it off only to fly directly back into the heat of battle. She didn't know why he had come to Gotham, but she was going to make sure that he didn't hurt anyone until she could get him out of here. She landed a blow to the midsection, forcing him back into a cement truck.

She kept him pinned there as she unleashed a barrage of blows. She wasn't doing any damage, but she was at least keeping him away from the public if she could isolate him here at this construction site. Hopefully, she would get some assistance soon.

Deciding he'd had enough, Amazo grabbed her by the throat, lifting her off the ground. She began to struggle in an attempt to get free, her hands going to her throat. She worked desperately to pry his fingers free from her neck, but the more she fought the tighter his hold became.

She could feel herself growing weaker the longer she was deprived of oxygen, her vision beginning to blur into a hazy mirage of fading colors. Just as she was on the verge of losing consciousness, something black connected with the side of Amazo's head.

Amazo threw her aside like a ragdoll, causing her to fly back into a sharp metal pole that embedded itself in her shoulder. Amazo turned to face the newest arrival, scanning the man dressed in black to find that he already had him in his database. He was nothing important, labeled as not a threat to him.

Amazo turned his attention back to Diana who had managed to pull the steel pole out of her shoulder, her hand covering the blood-soaked wound. She scooted backward until her back hit a wooden crate. She was breathing heavily as she watched Amazo coming at her, knowing she needed to stop him.

Batman wasn't about to let him touch her again. He unleashed a bolo, wrapping him up in the weapon. Unfortunately, Amazo easily broke the restraint as if it had been made of nothing more than string. Twisting around, he decided he needed to eliminate this nuisance before finishing off the Amazon warrior.

Batman stood ready to do whatever was necessary to save Diana and get her out of here. The problem was Amazo was as strong as Diana and Clark combined. "I'm here if you need me," Flash's voice came over Bruce's commlink in his cowl. "I'm staying back out of sight behind you."

"Get Diana out of here," Batman ordered Flash. "Stay out of sight."

The Dark Knight saw a blur of red appear behind Amazo, Diana there one second and gone the next. He felt a sense of relief, but it did little to settle the dread that swam through his veins. He had no idea how he was going to stop this thing. He was out of Kryptonite and Superman was in the Philippines helping with a natural disaster. Arthur, Mera, and Barry were still unknown to Amazo, and they needed to keep it that way for as long as possible.

He threw a handful of Batbombs at the android, the metallic balls rolling to his feet and exploding in a burst of blinding light. Amazo stumbled backward, his hands coming up to shield his face. Just as Batman was about to rush him, Amazo took off like a rocket, disappearing into the sky.

Diana and Flash ran up to stand beside Batman, Bruce instantly grabbing hold of Diana's forearm to keep her from going after him. He knew she would try to follow him, but he needed to get her back to the cave to treat her injuries.

"I can follow him and see where he's going," she angrily spat out, jerking her arm away from him.

"We need to treat your wounds," he told her. "Besides, we still don't have anything that can stop him. We need to come up with something that can counteract his ability to replicate."

"Does he have a control panel hidden somewhere?" Flash asked. "I would be quick enough to reach into the control panel and pull out the wires."

"I'm not sure," Batman admitted. "I'm still reviewing Professor Ivo's notes that we recovered at the mill. We need to figure out how he works before we can stop him."

"Maybe your girlfriend can help you figure it out," Diana snapped.

"What are you talking about?" Batman demanded to know.

"You, uh, have…a little pink lipstick…there," Flash told him, pointing at the slight smudge of pink color at the corner of his mouth.

Batman immediately wiped it away, his heart racing with fear. "It's not what you think," he tried to tell her.

"What am I supposed to think?" she spat out. "You suddenly leave without telling me anything except that you're going to meet a business partner only to show up later with lipstick on your face."

"Diana…"

"You lied to me," she bit out, her hand still covering her wounded shoulder to staunch the blood flow.

"I didn't lie to you," he insisted.

Barry watched the couple argue, his eyes wide with concern as he looked from Bruce to Diana. This was not good if they were fighting like this. Mom and dad could not lead the Justice League if they were at each other's throats.

"You know I think I'm just going to head back to the cave," Flash decided.

Diana just shook her head as she stared at Batman, overt hurt and sorrow permeating her eyes. She suddenly took off into the sky, leaving the pair standing there all alone. Batman growled furiously, knowing he needed to do whatever it took to make this right.

"Just give her a little time to cool down," Barry suggested. "I'm sure she'll be willing to talk once she's had some time."

"I hope so," Batman muttered, firing his grappling gun, and taking off.

"Well, that didn't go well," Flash mumbled to himself, looking around at the destruction. "Better warn the others there's trouble in paradise."

Batcave; May 5th, 15:03 EST

"This is quite a nasty wound," Alfred told Diana as he worked to clean her shoulder. "You're fortunate it wasn't anything more serious."

Diana just stared straight ahead, leaving Alfred to wonder what had happened. He'd overheard something about an argument between Bruce and Diana after Amazo had left, but that was all that he knew so far. He could only imagine what Master Bruce had done to infuriate the Amazon.

"Thankfully, it appears that your advanced healing is already beginning to knit everything back together again," he continued as he cleaned up the blood on her arm. "You don't have any other injuries, do you?"

"No," Diana softly murmured, not really wanting to talk at that moment.

"That's a relief," he replied. "I'm going to bandage this up, but you can probably remove it in an hour or so. With the rate you're already healing, it won't be long before you're as good as new."

"Diana," Bruce called her name as he stalked into the medical bay.

"I don't want to hear it, Bruce," she icily stated, refusing to look at him.

"Are you all right?"

"She'll be just fine," Alfred reassured him as he taped up the bandage on her shoulder. "I would suggest you lay low for the rest of the day, though."

"Thank you, Alfred," she said, sliding off the table.

She attempted to walk past Bruce only for him to lightly grab her by the elbow. She looked at him with a dark, warning glare that quickly caused him to retract his hand. "You keep doing that," she snapped. "One of these times, I'm going to break it."

"Please, Diana, let me explain," he pleaded with her. "Don't walk away from us."

"Like you did?" she shot back.

"I didn't walk away from us," he insisted, his anger growing.

"Then, what was it?" she demanded. "A weak moment?"

"Come here," he muttered, leading her to a private room where they could talk.

He was relieved that she willingly followed him. She could have easily left and there wouldn't have been anything he could've done about it. He closed the door, turning to face her to find her on the opposite side of the room, away from him. It caused his heart to sink.

Her arms were folded against her chest, her back leaning against the wall. Her expression was one of pure fury and yet her eyes bore witness to the sorrow that consumed her soul. It hurt him knowing that he caused that sorrow. He swore to himself he'd do everything in his power to make it up to her.

"I didn't completely lie to you," he began, running his fingers back through his hair as he began to pace.

"But you did lie," she pointed out.

"It wasn't a lie so much as I didn't tell you everything before I left," he clarified. "I know I should've told you, but I didn't want you to get involved."

"Involved in what?"

Bruce breathed deeply, pausing to remove his gauntlets to toss on a nearby table. "I went to meet Selina Kyle," he explained. "She was the one who sent me that text this morning. She asked to meet with me because she had information on Luthor."

"Who is Selina to you?"

"She is Catwoman," he informed her, "and an ex-girlfriend."

Diana tilted her head as her forehead creased in question. "Why would you hide her from me?" she questioned him. "You know that I don't feel threatened by any of your ex-girlfriends or your past."

"I know and I know I should've told you I was going to meet Selina," he confessed, dropping into a chair as he continued. "Selina and I had a very…complicated…relationship."

"How so?" Diana asked, her stance relaxing somewhat out of curiosity more than anything.

"Catwoman is a thief in Gotham," he told her. "We would get together for a while, break up for a time only to find ourselves drawn back to each other. I finally ended it for good a few years ago. I couldn't keep participating in the same vicious cycle. We weren't good for each other. We both tried, but…"

She listened as his voice trailed off, noticing the emotion that permeated his face and eyes as he talked about this other woman. It was anguish and regret, not love that she saw there. This woman had hurt him, that much was more than evident. She felt a great deal of sympathy for him, knowing that she had been fortunate in what she had shared for a time with Steve.

"Selina left Gotham after I broke it off with her, but she returned last year," he continued.

Diana found herself drawing closer to him, sitting down in a chair next to him. He immediately felt a flood of warmth permeate him, her close proximity bringing him the comfort that he needed at that moment. He was opening himself up to her even more than ever before. It wasn't something that he felt comfortable with, but Diana always seemed to make it a little easier.

"So, Selina had information about Lex Luthor?"

"Lex Luthor is back in Metropolis," he replied. "He tried to recruit Selina to his league of villains last night."

"I take it she decided not to join."

"No, she wanted to warn me about what Luthor was doing," he revealed. "We met at the Gotham Museum. She told me what she had found out about Luthor. She kissed me, but I broke it off. I was going to tell her about you, but Luthor evidently already told her. He knows about us somehow. Then, she kissed me on the cheek and left. Nothing else happened."

"Do you love her?" Diana softly asked.

"I thought I did at one time," he confessed, gazing deeply into her eyes so she would see the truth of his words. "Before meeting you, I would've said yes, but not now. You show me absolute love every time I make love with you. You have taught me what true love is."

She softly smiled at him, knowing he was being completely honest with her. "Why didn't you just tell me all of this before?"

Bruce looked away, trying to find the words that would best explain why he did what he had done. He still didn't quite understand it himself. He's just reacted without thinking it through. "Selina is…unpredictable at the best of times," he began to explain. "She can be very manipulative and cutting. I guess I didn't want to subject you to that because when her claws come out, it can get ugly."

"You're trying to protect me again," she pointed out, reaching out to take his hand in hers. "You know you don't need to do that. I can take care of myself."

He tightened his hold on her hand as if she was his only lifeline, thankful that she didn't appear to be angry with him anymore. "I can't help it," he replied. "Ever since I lost my parents, I have this obsessive need to protect everyone around me. There's more too that I haven't told you."

"What is it?"

"I had a partner who helped me as Batman," he revealed. "His name was Dick Grayson. He was Robin. He was orphaned when his family was murdered. I took him in and trained him to work with me to fight crime. The Joker captured him and killed him. I couldn't save him."

"I'm so sorry," she murmured, his pain so palpable that she could feel it.

"I carry the guilt of that loss with me every day," he continued. "I had considered taking in Jason Todd like I had Dick, saving him from life on the streets, but fear of him being murdered like Dick kept me from doing it. I regret that decision to this day. If I had taken him in, I might have been able to keep him from becoming Red Hood."

"Bruce, you can't carry the weight of every decision you make," she tried to tell him. "Jason made his own choices, carved out his own path in life. He needs to be responsible for those choices he made, not blame you for what he became."

"I know," he confessed with a sigh. "At the same time, I can't help but feel responsible. He could've had a very different life if I had taken him in."

Diana reached out, lightly brushing a lock of dark hair from his forehead. "You carry so much pain and needless guilt," she gently murmured. "Please, don't worry about me too."

He smiled softly at her. "Well, I have to admit, you're the first girlfriend I've ever had who's as strong as Superman," he revealed. "It takes a little getting used to…if you're still my girlfriend and I haven't completely blown it."

She chuckled softly as she got to her feet, moving to straddle his lap. "What am I going to do with you?" she murmured, cupping his face in her hands. She leaned in, her eyes falling closed as she kissed his forehead.

"I can think of several things off the top of my head," he said, his expression growing tender. "I am sorry, Diana. I love you. I never want to be the reason that you're hurting."

She lowered her lips to his, kissing him slowly and sensually. His arms immediately embraced her, keeping her close to him. His tongue slid against hers as they appreciated the taste and feel of one another, emotions still running high with a need for each other after showing such vulnerability with one another.

Standing up, he carried her to a table, setting her down on the edge of it. It didn't take long before uniforms were discarded, Bruce feverishly making love to his Diana. There was a sense of a renewed connection in their passionate intimacy, a deeper bond found between them that was far more than just physical.

He gasped her name as her fingernails raked over his shoulders, knowing completion for both of them was coming hard and fast. He'd never dreamed that he would find such love with someone like Diana, but somehow, someway, he had managed to find it. Kissing her, he swore to himself that he'd never let her go, never allow anyone to come between them.

Not even Selina.

Batcave; May 5th, 18:00 EST

Bruce and Diana approached the table where their other teammates waited for them. Diana could hear them talking, speculating on the state of her relationship with Bruce. She smiled to herself, knowing that it couldn't be better, especially after this afternoon. She still felt tingly all over from the things he had done to her.

"Shhh…here they are," Barry said, straightening up. "We were just talking about where we think Luthor is hiding."

Bruce gave the speedster a glare that quickly silenced any further comments. "I met today with an informant," he announced as he stopped at the head of the table. "She confirmed that Luthor is back in Metropolis."

"She?" Arthur questioned him, an eyebrow-raising in question.

Ignoring him, Bruce continued. "She wouldn't tell me where in Metropolis, but I have all of Luthor's properties mapped out."

They watched as a map of Metropolis appeared on the large screen. "He owns most of Metropolis," Arthur commented.

"It's going to take some time to check all of those places out," Victor agreed. "It has to be done if we're going to find Luthor."

"It won't take that much time if I do it," Barry added.

"He's going to have extensive security surrounding him," Clark mentioned. "It's not going to be easy to find him."

"Your female informant wouldn't give you any hints about where he's hiding?" Mera asked.

"Nothing," he said with a frown. "She said that he's creating his own version of a villain league and tried to recruit her, but she turned him down."

"We already knew he was doing that," Arthur replied with a scowl. "Makes me wonder where Black Manta is now. Hopefully, he's not in Metropolis with Luthor. We have enough problems with this Amazo thing running around causing trouble."

"It appears that Luthor is forming his own league to eliminate us so he can pave the way for Darkseid's arrival," Bruce revealed.

"Why would he want Darkseid to invade Earth?" Clark questioned him. "It makes no sense."

"Nothing about Luthor makes sense," Diana added. "Maybe he wants to appear to be the protector of the world."

"Could be," Victor replied. "Either that or he wants power and thinks Darkseid can give him that."

"That's just twisted," Barry said. "He probably wants to hand the world over to Darkseid, so he'll put Luthor in charge."

"Whatever his reasons, we need to put a stop to it," Diana interjected.

"Agreed," Bruce replied. "Finding Luthor is first and foremost. He's the mastermind behind all of this chaos. Next, is stopping Amazo. Victor and I are analyzing all of Professor Ivo's notes. It's tedious and time-consuming, but we're getting through it. Hopefully, we'll find a weakness in his programming that we can manipulate."

"Sorry I couldn't be there to help you today, Diana," Clark apologized. "I'm afraid I had my hands full."

"It's not your fault," she reassured him. "I'm not certain there's much you could have done either."

Arthur grimaced with the thought. "I'm glad I haven't run into him yet."

"I wonder why he came to Gotham," Barry voiced his concern. "He was in Metropolis. What drew him here?"

"I don't know, but there's no telling where he'll show up next," Bruce responded with unmistakable worry. "We need to come up with some sort of plan to slow him down."

"When are we getting commlinks?" Arthur asked. "It'd help for us to all be connected so we can show up to help each other if there's trouble."

"I'm glad you mentioned it, Mister Curry," Alfred said as he arrived with commlinks in hand. "Mister Stone and I finished these this afternoon. I just finished programming them."

"I already have mine," Barry gloated with a grin.

"I wouldn't mind getting a look at Luthor's yacht that was impounded in Morocco," Bruce announced.

"We checked it out," Arthur reminded him. "There wasn't anything there but dead bodies."

"I want to check it for something else," Bruce revealed.

Diana looked at Bruce. "You think he might have more Kryptonite with him?"

"That's my guess," he told her.

"There weren't any glowing green rocks on that yacht," Barry confirmed. "If there were, we would've brought it back."

"I know, but I'd like to scan it for trace elements," Bruce explained. "If he had Kryptonite on that yacht, it should have left behind a faint signature."

"Looks like we're heading back to Morocco," Arthur said to Mera.

"Oh, can I come too?" Barry asked with great excitement.

"Sorry, I have a specific job for you to do," Bruce informed him.

"Great!" Barry said. "What is it?"

"I want you to make another sweep of the Kryptonian ship to make sure we haven't missed any hidden compartments," he told him. "If there's more Kryptonite hidden somewhere on there, I want it."

Clark frowned as he thought about it. "I feel like I know that ship forward and backward, but it might not hurt to look again," he agreed.

Barry wrinkled his nose. "No offense, super buddy, but that ship is uber-creepy."

Clark chuckled at Barry. "Do you want me to go with you?"

"If I find Kryptonite, you can't be around it," Barry reminded him.

"I can go with you."

Everyone froze with the unexpected voice that echoed through the cave. They turned to find a green being floating in the air several feet away from them. "What…the…hell…" Arthur began to mutter in shock.

"You came," Bruce replied with a smile. "I didn't know if you would."

Martian Manhunter lowered himself to the ground, walking towards the group gathered around the table. He was an imposing specimen, to say the least. "I would have come sooner, but I had business that required my absolute attention."

"Please, join us," Diana told him, offering him a chair beside Clark.

"This is J'onn J'onzz, also known as Martian Manhunter," Bruce introduced.

"You're a real Martian?" Barry asked.

"I am," he confessed.

"It's a pleasure to meet you," Clark said, offering him a hand of friendship.

J'onn shook his hand with a small smile, knowing they had already met. "Thank you," he replied. "I hope that I can be of help."

Bruce took a moment to make introductions of all the team members, Alfred giving him a commlink as well. "Welcome to the team…such as it is," Alfred warmly greeted him.

"What abilities do you possess?" Victor asked.

"I have the ability to shape-shift, invisibility, phasing, telepathy, super strength, super hearing, flight, super speed, and telekinesis among other things," he revealed.

"Wow," Barry softly uttered in awe. "He's like a Swiss-army knife of superheroes."

Bruce was taken aback by the abilities that their newest member possessed. He could prove to be the most valuable member by far. Keeping him away from Amazo was an absolute must. They didn't need the android phasing or becoming invisible. He was causing them enough grief as it was with Clark and Diana's abilities.

"Where do you live?" Arthur asked him. "I mean you can't exactly go about daily life like this."

"I have a secret identity as many of you have."

"Your help is going to be invaluable, J'onn," Diana told him. "We're honored to have you join us."

"Thank you, Diana," he replied. "I hope I can be of service. There is a war coming. We're going to need all able hands to stop Darkseid from taking over the world."

"What happened to your world?" Mera asked.

J'onn grew even more stoic if that was possible. "Genocide," he simply answered her. "I lost my wife and family."

"I'm so sorry, J'onn," Mera softly said.

J'onn could feel the depths of her sympathy as well as her own painful loss of her parents. He could feel that each of the members around the table held similar experiences of great loss of one kind or another. It was a deeply wounded group that had come together to be the voice of justice in this world. He felt that he may have just found himself a new family, a substitute for the one that he had lost.

"So, what's the game plan?" Barry asked.

"If Mera and Arthur want to go to Morocco to check out Luthor's yacht, the information could prove useful," Bruce decided. "If Luthor truly has more Kryptonite, he's going to keep it with him. He won't trust it to be anyplace else other than with him."

"You got it," Arthur agreed. "Just give us the equipment we need to scan the yacht."

"I would be happy to accompany Flash to the Kryptonian ship tonight," J'onn volunteered.

"Awesome," Barry said. "It'll be nice to have some backup just in case."

"While you are doing that, we need to search Metropolis for Luthor," Bruce continued.

"Looks like there's more searching in our future," Victor told Clark.

"This could take days and that's if Luthor does decide to stay in one place," Clark responded.

"We have to split up instead of going out in teams of two," Diana suggested.

Bruce picked up his cellphone as they discussed the best way to look for Luthor. It was another text message from his stalker. "Your girlfriend saved you this time, but neither of you will survive the next."

Bruce gritted his teeth as fury welled up within him, threatening to suffocate him. As soon as he found Luthor, he was going after Deathstroke, ending this permanently. He wasn't going to tolerate these mind games or these death threats that he was making against him and Diana. He wouldn't be as worried if he hadn't targeted Diana.

Now, Deathstroke had sealed his fate.

Diana could tell that something was wrong. The anger in Bruce's eyes was evident as he set his cellphone down. She wished she had J'onn's telepathy at that moment, wanting to reach out to him and soothe whatever had upset him. She had no doubt it was Deathstroke again.

"For now, we need to go out in pairs," Bruce determined. "We can't trust that Amazo isn't going to show up out of nowhere and attack."

"Agreed," Clark replied. "Stopping Luthor and Amazo is our first priority."

"I guess you don't need to be updated on who Amazo is since you can read our minds," Bruce said to J'onn.

J'onn shook his head. "I do not read minds without permission," he revealed. "I don't want to violate anyone's privacy or break their trust in me."

"You have my permission to read my mind anytime you want to," Barry told him. "I don't have anything to hide."

"There's also not much up there," Arthur quipped. "Don't let this one trip you up, J'onn."

"Diana and I will take the west end," Bruce decided, looking towards Clark and Victor. "You two start on the east end and we'll meet in the middle of Metropolis."

"Great!" Barry exclaimed, rubbing his hands together. "Let's eat and hit the road."

Everyone got up, heading to the table where Alfred had set out a buffet for the team to eat before heading for their missions. Bruce looked to the Martian Manhunter, extending his hand. "Thank you again for coming," he told him. "You are going to be extremely valuable in the coming war."

J'onn shook his hand, his expression stoic. "Thank you, but I'm afraid I won't be enough," he replied. "We need far more who are willing to fight."

"We'll keep looking for others," he reassured him. "I have a feeling there are many more like our team hiding in plain sight."

"I have to agree with you," he said. "However, convincing them to join the fight could be another story."

"We'll have to make them see the need or none of us will be around for it to matter."

Metropolis; May 5th, 21:10 EST

Luthor began to pace back and forth between Professor Ivo and Bruno Mannheim. His hands were clasped behind his back, his nostrils flaring with anger. "So, you can't find it?"

"No, but—" Ivo began only to be silenced when Luthor held up a single hand, coming to a stop before him.

"No, you lost Amazo," Luthor bit out. "Is that correct?"

"Yes, but I've been looking for him," Ivo continued, determined to get his say. "He was seen in Gotham today. He fought Wonder Woman and defeated her."

"Yes, that's wonderful, isn't it?" Luthor seethed. "We have a powerful android on the loose that we can't control or find. How is that supposed to benefit me?"

"We will find him, Lex," Bruno promised him. "I have my men searching both Metropolis and Gotham for him."

"Let me get this right," Luthor stated, fuming. "You were able to create this magnificent creature who by the way now possesses the powers of both Superman and Wonder Woman, but you have no idea where he is."

"I'm afraid that's right," Ivo softly confessed. "You see—"

In less than a blink of an eye, Luthor pulled out a gun and shot Ivo right between the eyes. Bruno leaped back in shock, fearing for his own life as he stared down at the dead body lying on the floor next to him. His head snapped up to find Luthor pointing his gun directly at him.

"Are you going to fail me too?" Luthor demanded to know.

"No…no, I promise I won't," Bruno stammered. "My men will find the android and bring him back to you."

"Good," Luthor said with a smile, putting his gun away as he nodded to two of his men. "I'm glad that we can see eye to eye. Would you care for a drink?"

Luthor's men picked up Ivo and dragged his body out of the room, leaving him alone with Bruno. "I could definitely use one," Bruno agreed, glancing back over his shoulder at Ivo who was never coming back.

Luthor poured him a drink, handing him the glass before pouring himself one. "We have a war coming, my friend," he told him. "It's good to know that you're choosing the right side."

"Do you really think we're going to be in a war with the Justice League?" Bruno questioned him, taking a healthy swallow of the alcohol.

"I'm sure of it," Luthor confirmed with a confident smirk. "I'm going to see to it."

Bruno stared at him, trying not to show his surprise or the fact that he was certain Luthor had lost his mind. "Who are you going to have on your team that is capable of going up against the likes of the Justice League?"

"I have a secret weapon," he told him, wiggling his eyebrows as he took a sip of his drink.

"Amazo?"

"Him too," he admitted, "but I have even more than that."

"What is it?"

"I'll show you," Luthor replied.

Bruno watched as Luthor went to a painting, moving it to the side to reveal a wall safe. Opening it, Luthor pulled out a lead box. Whatever was in there, it was evident that it was valuable and not just in monetary value. It was worth far more than that.

As Luthor opened the box, Bruno suddenly wished now that he hadn't asked, sweat breaking out across his upper lip.
