Chapter 9 - Mundungus Fletcher

Lizzie slept in Sirius's room instead of the drawing room but got up abruptly at the sound of the front lock clicking a few days later. She hurried into the hallway with her wand drawn in a firm grip and watched the outline of a figure enter and shut the door behind themselves but couldn't tell through the dust that rose in the shape of Dumbledore who it was.

Remus stepped through with his arms raised. "Lizzie..." he said cautiously.

"Oh, thank God," Hermione said from behind her, but Lizzie held her back from approaching him.

"Identify yourself," Lizzie said coarsely.

"Remus John Lupin, Moony, werewolf, married to Nymphadora Tonks, one of your father's best friends... taught you to produce a patronus..." he said.

"Way too formal," Lizzie retorted.

"You hog yellow crayons," he said in response, a slight smile on his face. Lizzie lowered hers and Hermione went to give him a hug.

"I thought you might be here..." he said.

"The wedding... is everybody alright?" Ron asked. Remus exhaled and gestured to the kitchen to sit.

"We're fine, but in hiding. They tortured and murdered the Minister for whereabouts on you, Lizzie. They didn't know you were at the wedding but planned to attack the Burrow in the event the ministry came down anyway. Pius Thickness took over, he's no doubt imperiused. Several of us stayed behind to get people to safety. Most of the guests were able to apparate. No deaths..." he said reassuringly.

"Tonk's parents were tortured with the cruciatus. I'd gotten her and Ginny out, but they stayed to help. Arthur is being tightly monitored. They think Ron has spattergroit, that was clever..." Remus said and Ron smiled weakly.

"Molly, Fred and George, Bill and Fleur and her family, all fine. Bill established a safehouse at Shell Cottage..." he added. Lizzie stared at him for more because he hadn't mentioned someone specific. Remus looked at her apologetically.

"He tortured Charlie," Remus said finally.

"He... meaning..." Lizzie whispered. "Voldemort was there?" She asked in horror. Remus shook his head.

"They took him elsewhere but brought him back in the hope he'd eventually make contact with you. He didn't tell them anything, but I think Voldemort got in his head..." he explained. "He was in bad shape but is recovering with Bill."

Lizzie was cold, remembering Cedric. She wouldn't let him take another. Lizzie didn't notice how badly she was trembling until Remus had hands steadying her forearms. "He will be alright," Remus said sympathetically. "Where did the three of you go? Straight here?" he asked.

"Toppencourt Road... but not for long. We were attacked by Dolohov and Thorfin in a muggle cafe," Ron explained. Remus choked on a butter beer he'd been drinking.

"How? It's impossible to track apparition," he said incredulously.

"We don't know. That's why we came here, there's still a fidelius, but even though it's weak, I still think Snape reckons I'm not stupid enough to stay here," Lizzie said.

"Well, they're staked out outside nonetheless, if you leave, be cautious, I had to apparate right on the top step to avoid being seen," Remus warned.

"But you need to know they're not just hunting you; they have everyone who believes this hunting you..." he opened a copy of the paper and handed it to her. She read it aloud but in a tired voice.

Azalea Potter is wanted primarily for questioning about the murder of Albus Dumbledore who fell from the Astronomy Tower of Hogwarts in June. She was seen with him earlier that evening in Hogsmeade, and then seen running from the tower just moments after the fall.

Many have testified that she had extreme animosity toward Dumbledore, especially following the events of the Triwizard Tournament and Department of Mysteries assault in years prior. Many believe she blamed him for both her near life-long obscurial possession and her abduction by the Dark Lord and his followers last year.

Some have speculated that Dumbledore believed Miss Potter responsible in whole or in part in the death of Cedric Diggory in 1996. Several wand and spell assault experts have determined that a Phoenix core wand was the used in his murder.

The memories offered in the aftermath of the third task of the triwizard tournament in which she alleges both she and Cedric Diggory were lured to a different location and attacked are nowhere to be found, and it is widely known that his death awarded her the status as winner of the tournament. Dumbledore is the only known person to have viewed them. He vocalized his support of her statements in the uncertain aftermath but it was no secret that the relationship between himself and his once prized pupil had deteriorated greatly.

The Ministery believes her to be armed and dangerous. She is no longer afflicted by an obscurial possession, nor is she under an imperious as it has been established that she can easily resist the curse. However, she is afflicted by a sinister form of bond to the Dark Lord himself and if recovered by him, she would be immeasurably dangerous to the wizarding community.

However, prior to and in the absence of this curse, she is believed or known to be responsible for the death of at least eleven others.

Witnesses of the events that led to the demolishment of the Department of Mysteries last year have testified that she used an imperious on Peter Pettigrew, who held an Order of Merlin, and murdered him in front of several other death eaters by savagely stabbing him in the throat. She proceeded to use the cruciatus curse on Bellatrix Lestrange and initiated a physical assault that left her permanently deformed. Other witnesses also claim to have seen Potter push Sirius Black, her godfather who was allegedly responsible for betraying her family's location in hiding to the Dark Lord in 1983, into the execution veil, resulting in his death that evening as well.

In the months to follow, the relatives who raised her were brutally attacked and tortured. Her uncle was on the road to recovery in the hospital when he was mysteriously found dead from apparent blood poisoning. It is believed Potter was responsible for his death in response to the treatment of her in the years following her parents' deaths. That same evening, Azalea's husband, Damien Whalen, a resident muggle surgeon at the hospital her uncle was receiving care in, was found dead due to an apparent car accident. It is alleged that Miss Potter did not consent to the arranged marriage authenticated by Cyprian Counsel, a subsect of the Catholic Church she was raised within by her muggle relatives. Considering she was fifteen at the time the marriage license was recorded, and his proximity to her uncle on the day of both their deaths, authorities believe Miss Potter played a roll in the accident. Speculation concludes that both the desire to have the marriage completely nullified with his death, and revenge for any potential sexual assault that may have occurred at his hands considering the near thirty-year age difference, would have compelled her to do something so heinous.

Her mother's sister, Petunia Dursley nee Evans, and Miss Potter's cousin, Dudley Dursley, have been missing for months now. Authorities believe, given the rest of the circumstances that they too may be dead, but that has not been confirmed.

Furthering concern, in 1996, prior to the third task of the triwizard tournament, Miss Potter had mysteriously recovered the partial remains of the body of Barty Crouch Senior in the forest surrounding Hogwarts School. Witnesses testified at the time that she left the castle late into the evening, wandered into the forest until stopping at the exact spot he was buried, and digging until his remains emerged. Witnesses also report that she was both unhinged and belligerent in response to the events. It should be noted that Mr. Crouch was the one who required her to participate in the tournament under penalty of magical contract when she vocalized her desire not to.

In 1994, Miss Potter was deemed responsible for the permanently disabling memory charm on Gilderoy Lockhart that rendered him a permanent resident of St. Mungos. Between the years of 1993 and 1994 Miss Potter was also the primary suspect of the attacks at Hogwarts School having used a basilisk to petrify with the intent to kill muggle born students and rendered six victims petrified. She would have been the only one capable of controlling this creature with her ability to speak to snakes. It is suspected that Mr. Lockhart found evidence to support this, and Miss Potter took the opportunity to render his account or evidence useless.

In 1993, it was confirmed that Quirinus Quirrell died at her hands. Initially claimed to be self-defense, there is no evidence to indicate he was a threat to her, having followed her into the dungeons under the objective to protect the Philosphers Stone, since destroyed, while it was being concealed at Hogwarts for protection. It is believed Azalea Potter was interested in expanding her legacy of the being 'the girl who lived' with the inability to ever die.

Even more disturbing, prior to her enrollment at Hogwarts, it is believed that Potter is responsible for the deaths of at least three, possible four students at the muggle primary school she attended along with a member of the clergy. First, a girl named Bethany Lawrence who suffered a fatal injury on a tennis court during a match Miss Potter was participating in. Though potentially a mere accident, the young girl had recently gotten young Azalea into a considerable amount of trouble with school authorities. Even more disturbing was that Miss Lawrence had lost one eye to the injury on the court but was found without either eye when she bled to death in the days following her surgery. Miss Potter was ten-years-old at the time.

Second, was a girl named Lisa Heard, who was disciplined for reckless endangerment in regard to Miss Potter during a Water Polo lesson in which she nearly drowned. Azalea was also ten at the time and Miss Heard was fifteen. Not long after these events, Lisa Heard was found drowned in the same swimming pool.

Third, was a girl named Katherine Teller. Disciplinary files indicate Katherine was known to bully and terrorize a young Azalea for some two to three years while in attendance at the school. Young Miss Potter was last to see Miss Teller before she severed two arteries in a school bathroom and bled to death before school officials found her.

This makes the attack at Hogwarts School on a fellow student just last year in which a young man was found bleeding to death in the bathroom more suspicious. She had claimed self-defense but no evidence was presented to support it, particularly considering dark magic was used to accomplish it.

Miss Potter was expelled from Sacred Heart Catholic Academy in the spring of 1992, just months prior to attending Hogwarts. The events leading up to this expulsion was, unsurprisingly, the death of another student, deemed a suicide despite Miss Potter being the first to find the body. She was allegedly close to this young girl, who was her age, and destined for Hogwarts as well as a muggle-born witch. It is not clear if Miss Potter knew this considering she has consistently claimed to have been raised without any awareness of the magical world prior to her enrollment at Hogwarts. Melody Warren was found lynched above the entrance to the church cathedral. When Miss Potter was questioned about it by the school's chaplain, she disappeared from campus, and the Chaplain, Father Sean Matthew, was found dead of an apparent heart attack in his office. No evidence suggested foul play, a heart attack an unlikely occurrence in someone who was merely thirty-eight at the time he died, but that is to be expected from a muggle perspective which would have failed to consider the use of magic.

In addition to the events listed above, and not publicized at the time, Miss Potter's cousin, Dudley Dursley, was attacked with magic and hospitalized in the summer of 1996. She suffered no consequences for the attack at the time despite sitting trial.

It should also be noted that last year, she was supposed to sit trial for a life sentence for conspiracy and sedition as it related to the formation of group of students training to use dark magic against explicit ministry orders.

If you have any information regarding her location, we implore you to contact the ministry. We would also like to remind anyone found in contact or aiding and abetting a mass murderer is subject under wizarding law to a life sentence in Azkaban. Once questioned, Miss Potter will sit trial for the indiscretions and heinous crimes previously ignored under prior administrations. If found guilty, her actions are punishable by dementors kiss and execution.'

"They have managed to perfectly spin everything, haven't they?" Lizzie asked in a dry voice. Her hands were wet and clammy and Hermione stared at her in horror, quickly reading through the paper herself.

"Dudley and Petunia aren't... we put them further in hiding, that was my idea," Lizzie said. "I have no real sympathy for my aunt, but he abused her too, and I can't... well I can't bring myself to hate her as much as I did him," Lizzie explained.

"Except she used you to deter him from hurting her, threw you to dogs, that's worse in my opinion," Ron said bitterly.

"No, he loved her, he only hurt her when it involved me to begin with, he wasn't after just anyone. She just didn't step in because he scared her to death when he was around me... it's not quite the same thing. Don't get me wrong, she hated me. But I knew she was more disturbed than anything..." Lizzie explained.

"I killed Vernon, but didn't know what happened with Damien, that felt like the intersection of a dream and reality. I didn't know what was going on... obviously not Cedric or Sirius, and Snape killed Dumbledore. I would have happily killed Bellatrix though if we're being honest..." Lizzie rubbed her face feeling immeasurably exhausted.

"We know what happened with the Chamber but try explaining that diary and I'll look like a loon. We know what happened with Lockhart, backfired his own spell, and Quirrell... but try explaining Voldemort on the back of his head will just seal my fate as a loon..." Lizzie said bitterly.

"Crouch was killed by his son, the creep admitted it. I was lured out there by the snake...and... the girls... well there were more than three and as far as my memory goes back, I wasn't actually there when they died. I was there when Beth got hurt and then she had surgery. I was in the hospital when Lisa died at the school, and I was in class when they found Katie. She was alive when I left, she had told me to leave and I did... but I don't know what's real anymore to be honest," Lizzie tried to explain.

"As far as Dudley goes, we know that was the dementor attack and Malfoy attacked me in that bathroom, I didn't go in there to hurt him. He was enraged and tried to... I panicked and didn't know what that spell did. Stupid. But I didn't want to kill him, I was horrified," she said bitterly with her eyes closed, remembering the altercation vividly while it played out behind her eyelids.

"Well, good, because this had convinced me you were a raging lunatic," Ron said sarcastically. Lizzie laughed faintly.

"They're still flying under the radar on how much control they have over the ministry. But it hasn't convinced everyone. They've instated a muggle born registration commission, made attendance at Hogwarts mandatory if you're given blood status, but it's really just a way to identify young muggle borns. Painting Lizzie as a force of destruction is the easy thing to do, otherwise there would be a rally cry around her. They don't want people to resist in droves," Remus explained.

"Muggle born registration?" Hermione asked. Remus nodded.

"Anyone on the list has to submit for interrogation. They're sending them all off to prison though. It's just a rouse to make people think they're doing due diligence," he elaborated.

"Jesus Christ," Lizzie whispered.

"Lizzie, I want to come with you. I don't feel right, considering this... if caught you're up for execution... I think you need the more seasoned experience, there's magic beyond what we've imagined. Can you tell me what you're doing?" He asked.

Lizzie paused. "Remus... there's no magic here I can't already imagine. We're..." she looked at Ron to gauge telling him the truth. "We're hunting horcruxes," she whispered. "That can't be repeated," she added quickly. His eyes were wide.

"Plural?" He asked with a dry voice.

"He made many. He's anchored to all of them if he dies, so he can't die..." Lizzie said, the weight of it all sinking low as she watched gravity of it dawned on him for the first time.

"I can't let you do that alone," he said finally.

"You're going to have to. What even brought you here, where's Tonks?" Lizzie asked. The situation started to feel wrong.

"Tonks..." he said but lost the rest of the sentence.

"Is pregnant," Lizzie finished, reading his face to confirm.

"I hate that you can do that," Remus muttered bitterly.

"Oh, that's wonderful!" Hermione said, reaching forward to grab his hand in support.

"That's great, Remus. We can use those beacons of hope," Ron said, eyes sparkling slightly at the thought.

Remus shook his head. "He's not thrilled," Lizzie added. "Why?" She asked desperately, unable to understand his demeanor. Apprehension she would understand, but he bordered on reproach and almost indifference.

"I made a mistake in marrying her," he said before the words could lodge like marbles in his mouth. "I've put her in danger. Her own family isn't pleased. You don't understand because you've only seen me from the lense that your parents did. Most of the world doesn't... they can't look at me... I can't support them," he explained with difficulty. Lizzie frowned but sympathized.

"Remus... you want to abandon them and come with us..." Lizzie said in a dry voice.

"They'll be safe. Your dad and Sirius would want me to help protect you," he said with resolve he must have thought would be redeeming.

"No... my dad, your best friend, would want to know why you're keen on abandoning your family. I think Sirius would a bit appalled as well," she said flatly, anger was climbing.

Remus glared at her. "This is why you were so angry about Charlie, wasn't it?" She asked sharply. His mouth twitched in suppressed anger.

"You think you knew your father? He would chew you out through the next eclipse for being reckless with someone who is old enough to know better! He'd be upset I endangered my wife to begin with! The child is going to be like me and if by miracle it's not like me, it will be ASHAMED of me, it will be AFRAID of me! It will be treated the SAME as me even if it's not. I have sentenced them to exile!" He was shouting now, and Lizzie tensed. Hermione's eyes were drowning, and Ron stared at his hands without words.

"MY FATHER! JAMES POTTER! The eighteen-year-old kid who got his muggle born and targeted wife pregnant in the middle of a war and died trying to protect his daughter who was born an object of it!? You think he would want you to ABANDON your family!? I've always known he'd forgive you for handing me off to Hagrid and ultimately those bloody sociopaths because you were not given a choice, but this one is on YOU! They will NEVER forgive you!" Lizzie yelled back. He looked like she'd stabbed him.

"What are you going to do, Remus? Make your way back to them when your child is fourteen feeling GUILTY?" She sneered.

"Lizzie..." Hermione said, tugging her arm to break their glare.

"How dare you! You were not my child!" He shouted back.

"Yes, I'm aware! And there was a time up until about five minutes ago I would have severely envied ANYONE who was, but now I have nothing but pity for them!" She hissed back. He looked stung.

"I'm trying to protect you!" He snapped back.

"You're trying to get yourself killed!" She retorted fiercely. "So that way you don't have to live with what you're doing! At their expense AND mine. You're stepping into Sirius's shoes with no regard for the people who NEED YOU!" Lizzie was shaking in anger.

"Lizzie, stop it!" Hermione pled. They were both standing, he towered over her, and his rage made her sense the wolf more than she ever had before.

"You're a fucking coward," she spat harshly, her blood now boiling over in rage. She looked up at him and was met with a loud crack that rang through her ears. Lizzie clutched her face in shock. He'd never hit her, but she could now see the outline of the wolf on his face. Hermione gasped and Ron stood up abruptly.

Lip trembling, she sunk her head. "Go back to your wife, or I swear to God, I never want to see you again," Lizzie said in a furious but outrageously small voice. Hermione gaped in horror and Remus shoved past Lizzie. As she reached for his arm on his retreat from the kitchen, she was instantly thrown back against the wall with a hex.

"Remus!" Hermione shrieked, but the front door slammed, and Lizzie stood there, lip and cheekbone rapidly swelling from the slap, in a sort of disbelieving shock. Tears wouldn't come but she knew they wouldn't show her any mercy once they did. Ron lifted her chin to look at her face, his eyes wide in disbelief. Hermione trembled noticeably. "Lizzie..." she whispered.

"Parents shouldn't leave their children. Not unless... they have to..." she said in a whisper. Hot tears ran the length of face and she wiped pools at her jawline. Images of her father sprawled on the stairs, hours gazing into her mother's lifeless eyes, Sirius falling through the veil... "If he goes back to her, it will be worth it," she said finally, collecting the glass shards her brain had broken into like a child collecting seashells on the shore.

"Lizzie..." Hermione said sympathetically.

"If he doesn't...?" Ron asked.

"Then... then I lost another father," Lizzie said with a violent heave in her chest. "I can't forgive that," she said, shaking her head and sinking into a chair to bury it in her arms on the table.

Hours seemed to pass but it might have just been minutes. A crash at the side door jolted her attention and they looked up to see Kreacher had returned, accompanied by a savagely swearing Mundungus. Lizzie focused with resolve and gripped her wand. When he saw her, he stiffened and froze.

"Kreacher brought mistress the thief, Kreacher is sorry it took longer, he has many hidey holes..." Kreacher said.

"Thank you, Kreacher," Lizzie said graciously, her eyes narrowed on the small man.

"I didn't betray you! I swear! I just didn't sign up to die for ya! Mad Eye was so convinced that danger was in store and I panicked," he explained. Lizzie fumed for a moment and approached him with a wand dug into his cheek.

"Then how did they know?" She asked.

"I don't know, Lizzie. I don't..." he stammered.

"This isn't about that, nobody is contesting that you're slime," Ron interjected maliciously.

"What then? About the goblets? The pictures? I swear that..." he said feverishly.

"What about the pictures?" Lizzie asked, the tip of her wand making a pink singe on his cheek.

He gaped. "Look I know you turned this place over and don't deny it. You took something specific," she said as evenly as possible while Kreacher jabbed at him with a serving fork disdainfully.

"I - well I took several things, d'nt I?" He asked. Lizzie glared.

"A locket, you took a locket, it didn't open, serpent S on the front. What did you do with it?" She stared at him. "Don't even try to lie, Fletcher, I'll know," she said menacingly.

"I know it. But I don't have it anymore. Was it valuable?" He asked.

"Worried he didn't get enough money for it," Ron said reproachfully.

Lizzie glared back down at him, tempted, irrationally to strike him with a painful blow. But she paused. "He gave it away," she said and he looked horrified she'd known somehow.

"Who?" She asked but the image that flashed in response made her body tense in fury. She stared down at the scars on the back of her hand and shook with rage.

"You've got to be kidding," she said, lowering her wand but fighting the urge to hex him.

"She was gonna lock me up for not having a license!" He said defensively.

"Who?" Hermione asked, looking at Lizzie.

"Umbridge..." Lizzie said. Her wand hand clasped around her left and she kneaded at the scar like it would erase it.

Ron and Hermione stared open mouthed at one another with the dawning of their atrocious misfortune. Lizzie sat down and kicked hard on the leg of the chair across from her in frustration before burying her hands in her hair and gripping handfuls.

Mundungus took to leave, but Lizzie shot him dagger eyes. "Who did you tell about the rendezvous, Fletcher?" She asked.

He averted eye contact with her which answered her question in part. Then he apparated with a loud crack.

They spent weeks taking turns staking out the ministry entrances under the cloak for means of gaining access to Umbridge. Ron came hurriedly into the drawing room after his morning stakeout and slapped a Daily Prophet down on the coffee table.

"Snape," he hissed bitterly. Lizzie looked at the headlines and gaped.

"Severus Snape Newly Appointed Headmaster" she read and let our a forlon groan.

"Electo and Amicus Carrow assuming Muggle Studies and Defense Against the Dark Arts, respectively," Hermione read aloud.

"They're death eaters!" Lizzie shrieked, fuming in rage. "The train is leaving in five minutes. They trapped them! They trapped all of them!"

Ron sat down and ran hands over his face, Lizzie knew he was thinking about Ginny. She thought of Neville, Luna, Seamus and Dean... Dumbledore's Army would be targeted. She bit her lip in apprehension.

"We need to do this tomorrow," she said finally.

"What? Umbridge?" Ron asked incredulously. Lizzie nodded with resolve, but Hermione gaped. Then she sprinted from the room and came back minutes later shoving the portrait of Finneus into her bag with great difficulty.

"Well, we don't want him snooping and telling Snape, do we?" She asked sharply when Lizzie and Ron looked confused.

"Right, good call," Ron said. "Plans?" He asked. Lizzie bucked her head toward the kitchen, and they feverishly laid out detailed plans for breaking into the ministry the following morning.

"This is unbelievable," Neville said, his hands shaking slightly as he set down the Prophet on the train.

Ernie leaned over from across the rowed compartment. "Do you believe the stuff about Lizzie?" He asked quietly.

Zachariah Smith chimed in, "it surprises you? She's always been unnerving," he said.

"No, they've distorted everything... you should bloody know that," Ginny snapped back harshly.

"Finnegan, where's Thomas? Both your girl and best mate are no shows this term," Zachariah added.

Neville had to pull on Seamus's arm to keep him in his seat. He looked utterly distressed and anxious and ready to hit anyone who pointed it out.

"Think she's hiding, or fighting?" Ernie asked.

"Both, it's Lizzie," Hannah added.

"Ginny, do you know where they went?" Seamus asked.

"I wouldn't say if I did," Ginny responded. Neville put a hand on hers, knowing her entire family was in jeopardy.

The train came to an abrupt halt, and they watched through the windows as black cloaked death eaters hurried past to board. They searched the compartments. Neville stood when they entered the back rows.

"Hermione Granger, Dean Thomas, Colin and Dennis Creevy, Justin Finch-Fletchly," one of them read out.

"Justin isn't here," Hannah said in a shaking voice.

"Neither are Granger, Thomas, or the Creevy brothers," Seamus said bitterly with contempt etched in every inch of his face.

One looked at Neville and Ginny, "these two I know know Potter well, she here?" He asked.

"No, idiot, of course she isn't," Neville said indignantly.

"Take them for questioning," the death eater said dismissively in response to the comment.

"We all know Potter, you'd need to round us all up!" Seamus spat, jumping to his feet in anger. Ernie stood up supportively.

"Oh don't worry, we will..." the woman in the group of death eaters said with a sinister smile.
