Pallet Town, a small, unsuspecting city on the farther reaches of the Kanto region. For most trainers, it would be a place to simply pass through on the way through their journey of the region. With no pokemon center, and not even a place to stay, there was little reason to stay in the town for longer than an hour. Truly, a place that one would consider forgettable.
Little did the Kanto people know that they were going to have a rather unbelievable trainer on their hands…
As the alarm clock in her room rang loudly, symbolizing an interruption of peaceful sleep, Jonah let out a loud groan, rolling onto her side. Slowly, her eyes opened. The clock's LED display flashed bright red numbers right into her sensitive eyes; 08:00. She hated waking up this early.
She pushed herself to her sitting position, rubbing the sleep from her eyes as her mind slowly began to wake up. She pushed herself off of the bed and ran a hand through her hair. She got her hand stuck in a knot in her hair, and winced as she yanked her hand out.
"Ow," she muttered, gently grabbing her hair as she moved to get through her daily routine. She normally went through this pretty quickly; brush her teeth, get her clothes around, take a shower, stuff like that. Though, because she woke up so early, she ended up really lagging behind in her normal care routine.
After spending about half an hour in the shower, and then spending another ten minutes just sitting in her room, naked and "drying off", the young woman eventually put her clothes on. A cute, deep blue long sleeved shirt and some blue jeans with some rips near the kneecaps. Fashionably placed rips, of course.
To top off her appearance, she put a pure white baseball cap on her head. She looked at herself in the mirror, adjusting her hair and gently nudging around the hat, before deciding that enough was enough, and heading out of the room, downstairs and into the kitchen.
"Hey, mom," she said. The smell of food cooking already told her her mother was downstairs. She didn't even look as she moved to the fridge and grabbed a carton of milk. "Good morning."
"Well good morning, young lady." She leaned over and gave her daughter a kiss on the cheek, causing Jonah to blush a little. "How'd the upcoming trainer sleep last night?"
"Well it was going pretty well until I woke up," she commented, pouring her glass of milk with little excitement in her voice. "Getting a pokemon is going to be nice, though. I wonder what kind the professor will give me."
"Well, you know that Oak. He's always giving out strange pokemon. Seems like every year he has a new three pokemon to give to new trainers."
"And this time only two are going to show up. Wonder what'll happen to that third one." She leaned over towards her mother, looking at the pan laying across the stove. "What are you making, anyways."
"Pancakes," she commented, flipping one into the air for dramatic effect before giggling. "What do you mean only two are going to show up? What happened to Daisy?"
"Daisy doesn't want to go on an adventure, apparently. Something about not wanting to be her grandpa's errand girl."
"What a strange girl," she said with a shake of her head. "And what about her sister? Uh…the clowny girl. What was her name again?"
"Audia," she answered as her mother slid the pancake off of the pan and onto a plate. She leaned against the counter and rolled her eyes. "I don't understand what's up with all her…clown stuff."
"Hey, if the girl wants to look like a clown, let her look like one. I think it's cute." She chuckled, and glanced at her daughter. "How many pancakes do you want?"
"Just two is fine," she said, crossing her arms over her chest. She gave her hat another adjustment, even taking it off and putting it back on to make it fit a little better.
"Still wearing that hat your father gave you," her mother said, her voice trailing off near the end. She was holding her tongue, Jonah could tell. "I don't know why you choose to wear that old thing."
"It's all I have to remember my dad," she said, not bothering to pick her words carefully. Her mother knew how she felt. "I've worn this thing for twelve years, think I'm going to just stop wearing it all of a sudden?"
"Considering the man you gave it to left ten years ago, yes, I'd kind of assume so." There was bitterness in her tone as she spoke, tending to her pancakes. "Honestly, sweetie, your father…it's best if you just forget about him, move on."
"I can't just move on, mom." A bitter tone was responded with Jonah's own, slightly hostile tone. Her mother looked like she wanted to protest, but she just let out a helpless sigh, before continuing with making pancakes.
A few minutes later, her mother finished making the other pancake, and gently slid it onto Jonah's plate. She thanked her mother and began to dig in, after applying a more than generous amount of syrup.
"You should come back here when you have your pokemon. I want to see just what the professor cooked up for you." Her mother had spoken after a whole minute of just watching her eat, as if she didn't have anything better to do. It made Jonah feel a little…strange.
"Yeah, of course," she said with a small nod. She had gotten through half of her first pancake, but wasn't sure if she could finish off the second one. Her mother always made the biggest pancakes. Very filling. "I need to come back and pack up stuff for my journey, anyways."
"Ah, right, that's smart. I never did that when I just started on my journey." Her mother chuckled, sitting opposite of Jonah. She smiled at her. "I spent a lot of money on clothes once I had gotten to Pewter. I don't know what I was thinking."
"You went on a pokemon journey?" Jonah raised an eyebrow. "I don't think you told me about that."
"Well, nothing really happened. It was all pretty short lived, anyways."
"How come? What happened?"
"I met your father." A fond tone was replaced with a blunt one, as the smile on her face faded completely. "...but, anyways, I can help you pack when you get back, if you want."
"I think I'll be fine. Thanks, mom."
After a few minutes more, Jonah had somehow managed to finish her pancakes. She didn't feel good about it immediately after, but she'd hate to not eat all the pancakes her mother made. She stood up from her table, feeling positively ill, before smiling at her mother. "Alright, mom, I'm heading out."
"Alright, sweetie. Have fun! Don't do anything too crazy." She heard her mother laugh as she left the home. After leaning against the walls of her house for a moment, waiting for her stomach to settle from all the syrup and rich pancakes she had just eaten, she made her way towards Professor Oaks lab.
Of course, it wasn't that far away. Pallet town was so small that you could walk anywhere in less than ten minutes. The biggest building in her small town loomed over her, and she couldn't help but get this feeling of butterfrees in her stomach, which did not mesh well with the nauseating pancake feeling. This was it…the thing that would start her great pokemon journey. This was a big moment.
And she really wished she didn't feel so sick at the moment.
She walked into the library and her eyes first drew to the professor. An old, graying man in a white lab coat, currently hovering over a table and tampering with some strange looking devices. Pokedex, maybe? She's known about them, but she's never seen them in person before.
The next thing that she was drawn to was Audia, her "rival" of sorts. Really she'd barely call them rivals, but Audia had decided on her sixteenth birthday that Jonah would serve as a kind of rival for her. She was always for dramatics, so it wasn't exactly unlike her to randomly declare such an absurd thing.
Speaking of dramatics, Audia had decided that she was going to be a great pokemon performer, on top of being a great trainer. Apparently being the greatest pokemon performer meant that you had to look like a clown most of the time. Audia stood out like a sore thumb in the middle of the lab, wearing clothes with colorful stripes, her hair dyed multiple colors and in strange loops, and comically oversized shoes. Did Jonah understand? Not at all, and she was pretty sure that no one else did either.
When she entered the lab, Audia had her back turned to her, but the moment Jonah closed the door, the clown girl spun around. She was wearing sheet white makeup that covered most of her face. She didn't have the red clown nose or exaggerated red clown lips, but she had little black star designs painted around her eyes. When her star-surrounded eyes fell upon Jonah, she let out a happy gasp and ran towards her.
"Oh my god, Jonah, I'm so glad you made it," she said with an absurdly wide smile. She grabbed Jonah's hand, without even asking, and guided her over to the center of the lab. "I was worried that you'd never show up! If you're going to be my rival, you're going to have to be a little more punctual."
"Wait, what?" Everything sort of happened in a haze, and she couldn't form a single thought relating to the situation. She looked between her "rival" and the professor, raising an eyebrow. "Am I late or something?"
"No, you're actually both an hour early." Professor Oak seemed to hold back a sigh as he turned around to face them. Poor guy must have been stuck here with Audia for longer than Jonah expected. He smiled, and Jonah had a hard time telling if it was forced or not. "But, no matter. Let's get you going on your pokemon adventure. Don't want to waste any time, do we?"
"No we do not, professor!" Audia giggled, absolutely bouncing from the energy she was holding. Did that also have something to do with clowns? God, Jonah hated how many of her thoughts revolved around clowns these days.
"Right, so, let me introduce you to the pokemon that will be available to you." Professor Oak pulled a remote out of his pocket and pressed a button. A platform rose out of the floor, with three pokeballs fixed into a semi-circle indentation in the platform. With another button press, the pokeballs opened.
Three bright flashes of light filled the room, causing Jonah to look away momentarily, pulling on her hat to cover her eyes. Once she was finished, she looked back to the platform, where the three released pokemon were currently sitting.
The first pokemon to catch her eye was an Electrike. It was a big, green canine with a yellow lightning bolt streaking across its side. It sat rather obediently, regarding the two newbie trainers with steely, determined eyes. It seemed that Oak trained this pokemon really well.
"This is an Electrike," Oak began, stepping behind the pokemon and giving it a few affectionate pets along the side of its back. "While normally these pokemon are very energetic and playful, this one has proven himself to be a rather serious pokemon. He's not one to back down from a challenge, I'll say that much."
Jonah glanced over to Audia, and could practically see hearts in her eyes. It seemed like Audia had made her decision before even examining the other two pokemon. That sounded just about right for her, though, to be honest.
"Next, we have Flaaffy," he walked to the other side of the platform, where an adorable pink sheep was lounging, making use of the fluff around its head and taking a rest. Seemed like a rather lethargic pokemon. Jonah chuckled. She could relate.
"Flaaffy is an electric type pokemon, known for their soft, cotton-like wool. While they were Mareep, you could freely touch it, but now that they've evolved…" he gently placed a hand on Flaaffy's wooly mane. Well, he tried to. Before he could even make contact, a bolt of electricity shot out towards the professor's hand. He let out a short cry of pain before reeling his hand away, nursing it with his arm.
"Well, you get the picture," the professor said with a sigh as Audia tried her best to hold back laughter. Jonah could only wince. That looked painful. Not the best selling point for that pokemon.
"And last, we have Ninjask." He approached the small bug that was in the middle of the platform. It silently stared at the two trainers before tilting its head with curiosity. It's wings fluttered rapidly, making a sound similar to a helicopter starting up.
"Ninjask often are filled with energy, and move around quickly to expend said energy. This Ninjask just so happened to use up all her energy before the presentation. I made sure of it, so that she wouldn't be flying all around the lab with you two here."
"Huh…" Jonah looked at all three of the pokemon, before looking to Audia. Audia also had the same thought, and turned to face Jonah. She smiled widely.
"Well, ladies first, Jonah. Go ahead and take your pick." There was a look in her eyes, a very hopeful look, probably hoping that she wasn't going to take the Electrike. Lucky for her, Jonah wasn't going to.
"How nice of you," she said with a small roll of her eyes before moving towards the platform. She looked the pokemon over for a moment, but already made her decision before even approaching the platform. She just wanted to make it look close. Ham it up a little. She's sure that Audia would appreciate that, if she knew.
"I'll pick this one." She pointed to the Ninjask, and it perked its head up with what was seemingly surprise.
Oak smiled. "That is a good choice. Would you like to name your pokemon as well?"
"Hmm…" She thought for only a moment, as she offered her arm to the big bug. The bug let out a buzz before fluttering over and planting itself on her arm. It was heavier than she expected, but she was able to lift it off the platform. "Accelra."
"Alright my turn!" Before Oak could say more, Audia moved to the Electrike and quickly scooped it up in her arms. The Electrike looked just as surprised as everyone else as she hugged and nuzzled it. "I pick this one. I'm naming him Sparky!"
"Uh…" Oak shook his head, trying to recover his cool demeanor. "Right, of course. If that's what you want."
He glanced at Jonah, a look that was almost asking her to help. She couldn't help but laugh a little. Oak sighed and cleared his throat. "Well, with your pokemon picked, and under your care, you are now officially pokemon trainers! I'm looking forward to seeing your progress over the course of your journey."
"You won't be disappointed, gramps!' Audia said as she snatched Sparky's pokeball while simultaneously placing the canine on the ground. "I'm going to be the best entertainer this world has ever seen! Just watch!"
"I'm sure you will, Audia. I have no doubt in that." Audia let out a giggle, as Jonah grabbed her own pokeball and attempted to slowly inch out of the laboratory without being spotted. She made it halfway to the door before Audia let out a gasp.
"Jonah! Let's have a pokemon battle!"
Oh boy…
"A pokemon battle?" Jonah asked as she turned to face Audia. "We just got these pokemon…"
"I know! This is the best opportunity to see just what they could do! Come on, meet me outside! It's going to be fun!" Before much else could be said, she rushed out the door, Electrike following her close behind.
Jonah gave Professor Oak a pleading look, and he simply shook his head. She let out a sigh, and stepped towards the door. Right, hopefully this won't go terribly.
What did I randomize?
Wild pokemon, trainer pokemon, starter pokemon, gifted pokemon and traded pokemon.
Field items and held items
Pokemon abilities, pokemon moves, and the all the stats regarding the moves (PP, Accuracy, Power)
Trainer class (My rival was a juggler and not the trainer class of "rival", hence why she's a clown now)
TM and HM compatability
And...I think that's it.
Most important things to note is obviously the starter pokemon but I brought that up in the story. I changed the rival to a woman to have more personal fun, and I made her a clown because it sounded like it fit well with Juggler. If more changes pop up I will explain them.
