Chapter 2
The hours turned to days and the days turned to weeks. The house was sad and quiet. Even the children knew not to make too much noise.
The first few days, controlling the fever had been nearly impossible. Elizabeth had seen herself a widow. Fortunately the fever went down after a long sennight and Mr. Montgomery said it was now up to Darcy to regain strength, but he was certain he will regain consciousness. It had been almost a fortnight since then, and if it weren't for the few movements and sounds everyone would have lost hope. Elizabeth had sent letters, to all her family members, but only the Bingleys replied had arrived quick enough.
Oh my dear sister, I'm truly sorry of the situation you are speaking of, Jane and I would rush to your aide but I'm happy and sad to inform you her pain has begun and the snow has destroyed the road, once there is an opportunity, your father and I will leave immediately for Pemberley. My friend is strong Elizabeth do not lose hope you will have him back with you soon. My prayers are with you.
Your brother Charles Bingley.
Oh my dear Lizzy, I'm very sorry not to be there for you. My pain has started and I am afraid this babe is to be more complicated than the others but do not worry like you said to me once, no one can do childbirth like the Bennet girls. Once the weather allows us to go we shall be with you and my brother. If I'm not allowed to go, please send the children, mama and I will be more than happy to have them here. Our mother has started praying for her son. Papa will be with you as soon as he can. You are both strong; you will survive this, our prayers are with you.
With love, your sister Jane Bingley.
Days into Darcy's fever, the weather had only worsened. The days were full with drizzle and the nights with snow. The children had slept a few nights with her since it was very cold and she needed their comfort. Her little boy had immediately realized Williams absent and after a few days of being told he was away on business, he sneaked into his chamber; Ben was found trying to wake his father with little kisses on his cheek. The scene had brought Elizabeth and Mrs. Reynolds to tears.
It was now well past midnight. The children were in the nursery and Elizabeth had changed places with Mr. Jenkins. She was falling asleep in a chair next to William when she heard a light cough.
His eyes still slightly closed. Looked up to the bed, at the room, the windows, Elizabeth was last thing he looked at.
"William?" –she said quietly and before Elizabeth could jump into his arms. He said
"Miss Bennett. What are you doing in my chambers?"
Darcy POV
His head hurt, his back ached, where is he? He remembered falling. It was too cold. His mouth was dry. Setting up and opening his eyes was exhausting. The last couple of hours he had been hearing voices, even children. When he finally opened his eyes, he realized he was no longer in Netherfield but Pemberley. Had they brought him home? Was he really that ill? Georgiana must be worried.
"William"— he heard.
He turned around and looked at the most enchanting green eyes. He knew those eyes. Then he realized.— "Miss Bennett, what are you doing in my chambers?"
He heard her gasp, tears formed in her eyes. Then she ran out the door. Was she here to compromise him? A plan orchestrated by her mother he was sure. But what was she doing here in Pemberley? Last time he saw her, she was standing next to… next to Wickham.
A disheveled Jenkins came into his room, quickly followed by Miss Bennett.
"Jenkins what is happening, Miss Bennett leave I will not be compromised."–He saw her face fell and more tears followed. He was trying to get up, but the action was too much a stab of pain made him flinch and dizziness appeared. He was losing consciousness again. Last he heard was Jenkins— "Calm Mrs. Darcy he still knows you it could be worse."
Once again, Darcy felt the pain in his head. This time the room was warmer and it was morning, He opened his eyes to Jenkins and the doctor, Mr. Montgomery who were talking in hash tone near the door. The Doctor saw him move and turned to speak with him.
"Mr. Darcy welcome back, you gave us quite a fright."
"Montgomery, what happened?" –He said with a dried throat.
The doctor looked at Jenkins, but before he could speak, Elizabeth walked in, "Miss Bennett get out!"
"Sir, I will not" –she said firmly.
"Mr. Darcy" –said Mr. Montgomery getting his attention back. — "What is the last thing you remember?"
Darcy frown, remember? And then he realized Montgomery was his physician in Derbyshire, he was indeed in Pemberley. But why was Elizabeth here? How did he got here?
"I… Charles and I went to Meryton for business; we were to call on the Bennets soon after that. We saw them with a few officers." He was now looking at Elizabeth with anger. She looked at him alarm and her eyes went to Jenkins who took a deep breath and sat in the chair next to him, shaking his head.
"And on your way back, you fell off your horse"— Jenkin finished. — "I remember apparently the horse could not jump over a fence, but you landed on your feet."
"Yes, I…." –He remembered falling. He was angry that Wickham had found his way back to him, he left before he could say something he would regret, later he regretted leaving Elizabeth alone with him. He remembered the fall it had been muddy. This one had been cold.
"Well, Mr. Darcy, I'm afraid to say this, but you indeed fell off your horse. This time hitting your head and catching lung fever."
"Is that why I was brought back to Pemberley? To die in my house, why not London. This house has seen to many deaths."— He turned around when he heard Elizabeth gasped.
"Mr. Darcy your injury was dangerous. You suffered a cut next to your ear. The head injury was bad enough if you add the fever you have been having for weeks I'm afraid it has caused some damage"
"What kind of damage?"
"Apparently you have suffered memory loss."
Darcy felt his throat close and his heart started beating so fast he could feel his pulse in his ears. He was getting dizzy once again.
"Breath William, slowly"- Mr. Montgomery said
"Memory loss" As in, I have forgotten my life?"— That could not be possible.
"A part of it Sir, It might come back in pieces once you start your routine or you might never, There's no way to tell. Other than that, you're in perfect health. The fever did not jeopardize anything, but you might be weak for a few months."
"In perfect health?"— Darcy yelled— "You cannot possibly be serious, how much have I forgotten?"
"You are in perfect health; would you rather never wake up? Loose a limb to the cold? Once you start your routine it might come back, believe me Mr. Darcy you were lucky, I will be back to see you in a couple of days."—And with that the doctor left.
How much have I forgotten? Where was his sister? How long have I been in bed?
"How much I have forgotten?"— He said to Jenkins, trying to ignore Elizabeth who hadn't stopped staring at him.
Jenkins ignored him looking at Elizabeth, She hesitated—"Mr. Darcy" –she said. And he had no other option but to acknowledge her. — "its 1817, Sir." –She said, and he gasped, which started a coughing fit. Jenkins handed him a glass of water.
"Lies!"—he yelled, six years. He had forgotten six years. Where was his sister? When did he leave Netherfield? Where was Richard? For God, was Richard still alive? Why was the rest of his family not beside him if he almost died?
"Sir, it is true" –Jenkins said.
"Explain and do not look at her. I'm your master, not her."
Jenkins smirk –"I'm sorry Sir but…"
"Mr. Darcy?"— Elizabeth said a little too loudly
"Yes, Miss Bennett."— He said coldly. Maybe if he let her say what she wanted she would leave.
"I'm no longer Miss Bennett"—
He turned around to fully look at her, her green eyes piercing his soul. She was no longer Miss Bennett was she on her wedding trip, No. no, it is too cold to be traveling and what kind of husband allows his wife to be in another man's chamber. Had she found him in the snow? Was her husband a nice man? Was he a gentleman, Miss Bennet did not deserve anything less, why do you care? We have been through this Miss Elizabeth Bennet is not for you, it's a Dangerous path Darcy. We have agreed that she doesn't have the connections or wealth to even be considered.
"Sir?"— she asked. He nodded at her to continue. –"I'm Mrs. Darcy."
SHE WAS HIS WIFE! Compromise of course, that mother of hers.
"How did you compromise me?"— He spat.
Jenkins scoffed at him and she laughed without humor— "Compromise? No sir, you begged for my hand"— she said.
Beg? A Darcy does not beg, before he could speak a maid brought his luncheon. –"I shall leave you and Jenkins to speak"
After Elizabeth left Jenkins started to fix his food, he had not realized how starved he felt, they were to eat together something they had not done since Ramsgate.
"Can you feed yourself or should I help you?
"I… Want to try." –Jenkins nodded, and with the little strength he had, he started eating.
"Slowly you might get sick."
"Explain please."
"I will not give you all the details. You should ask them to your wife"—Jenkins slightly smiled—"The doctor said she had to be the one to give the details so you might remember, but I will tell you of our stay at Netherfield after your fall, yes?"
Darcy did not like that plan, but knew Jenkins would leave so he agreed
"You came back angry all covered in mud because Mrs. Darcy had been in the company of Wickham. I told you to speak with her, to explain, I knew of your regard for her."— Darcy started shaking his head
"You will you deny it then"
"No, but my admiration for her, was not strong enough for a proposal."
"It was not, in that you are right, days passed and you did not seek her out. I heard rumors that Mr. Wickham had been spreading lies about you to the Meryton society, and even though I told you to tell them the truth, you did not care. After a few weeks Mr. Bingley offered a ball. The Ball was … You and Mrs. Darcy fought because of Wickham. It was not good. It had been years since I had seen you that angry, you also used the ball as an excuse alongside Miss Bingley to make Mr. Bingley realize that Miss Jane Bennett had no regard for him, both of you dragged him back to town."
"In the time they were together she did…"
"I told you not to meddle and I dare say I was right, it came back to hunt you"
Darcy glared at him—"You must admit her family…"
"Is now your Family, remember that when you speak with your wife."
So he left Netherfield that November, that had always been the plan. Even if he had not felt anything for Elizabeth he would have left.
"Where did I spend Christmas?"
"Here with Miss Darcy. You spent a few days in London and travel as quickly to Pemberley, I believe you were trying to put as much road between you and Mrs. Darcy but that did not help"
"She followed me here?"
Jenkins laughed— "No, You could not forget her."
Darcy could not make sense of anything, Where was Georgie?
"Where is my sister?"
"She is well"
It has been six years. Perhaps she is married. The idea of his little sister not being under his care made him sad. Had she married well? Had he?
"When did I propose to miss Bennett?"
"You reunited with Mrs. Darcy in Kent and then again, here in the summer of 1812."
She did follow him, by then the soup was done and he was exhausted.
"Rest, if you want to know more, ask your wife. But I must warn you be nice to her."
Darcy did not like that tone, it was the same tone Mrs. Reynolds used when she wants to scold someone.
"Thomas be honest where does the loyalty of my staff lies in?
Jenkins open the chambers door, he knew this was going to be hard to hear—With the Darcy's, sir"—
Darcy nodded only to frown when he saw Jenkins smiling.
—"She's Mrs. Darcy sir, don't forget that."
