Chapter 2: Hidden Depths

Making their way across the junk yards they reached their assigned area of work.

"Hmmm, not sure if we'll get much, we've been here a few times before." Louis remarked.

Violet rolled her eyes. "Typical, send us somewhere that's picked clean, trying to stiff us on payment."

Marlon just smirked. "Now guys, you haven't seen what's here yet, just around here."

With that he led them around a mountain of junk to reveal something new that had been dropped off.

"No way?" Clem gasped. "A Luchrehulk?"

Brody was in awe too. "A Separatist ship, how did we end up so lucky?"

"I know right, major pay day." Marlon replied. "Let's get too it."

The others all nodded and quickly gathered around as Marlon explained the plan, namely that, due to the size of the ship, they would be splitting into smaller teams to try and work through it, salvage anything of value and would meet up again once their work shift was done for the day. Setting timers so they'd know when it was time to leave, they split up and began their work.

"I see Brody and Marlon teamed up again." Violet said with a knowing smirk.

Clementine laughed. "Tell me about it, he needs to man up and just tell her already?"

Violet nodded as they picked their way through one of the docking bays.

"What about you, Clem?"

Clem paused for a moment, startled. "Huh, what?"

Smiling Violet queried. "Anyone catch your eye? I mean, I know it's slim pickings out here, but-"

"Oh, no, no…nobody." Clem replied quickly.

She prayed she wasn't blushing, the last thing she wanted was to be backed into a situation she couldn't escape from due to her bodily reactions giving her away.

Violet thankfully didn't notice Clem's blush, but she did notice the way Clem replied.

"Oh, sounds like there is...wait, don't tell me it's Louis, you have better taste than that." She quipped.

Clem rolled her eyes. "No, it's not Louis, and I am telling him you said that."

"Fine." Violet fired back. "If you don't, I will."

Laughing again the two young women continued their hunt for salvageable parts they could sell. Their work was mostly uneventful, until one particular incident happened. Clem and Violet had reached the end of the hanger they had found and were almost done. Looking around Clem noticed none of the others nearby, she guessed they'd reached this location first.

"Hey Clem, check it out." Violet said suddenly.

She was pointed high above them, to a particularly valuable piece of material, it was caught on a crane.

"I can climb up to that and get it. It'd be the perfect take." Violet continued.

Clem bit her lip. "You be careful...it looks pretty unsteady."

"I'll be fine." Violet said. "Just keep an eye out okay, don't wanna miss this chance, but don't wanna give Marlon cause to chew me out, or Ruby an opportunity to give me a lecture while treating some injury or other."

Clementine just nodded at that, smiling faintly as Violet began to climb up a nearby support post to reach a balcony above from which she could reach and begin to climb up the crane. Soon she was close enough and reached out, but the crane suddenly buckled slightly, making Violet miss.

"Whoa." She gasped, holding on tight.

"Careful!" Clem cried.

Violet grimaced. "I got this, don't worry."

She reached out again only this time she managed to grab the object, but that was when the crane snapped and Violet cried out as she fell.

"Vi!"

Clem knew it was stupid, but she acted on impulse, her hand shot out and before she knew it Violet's fall drastically slowed, enough that she was able to land softly. Violet instantly looked at Clem, eyes wide, but Clem just shook her head and Violet quietly agreed. They quickly left the hanger to meet with the others, not daring to take any more risks.

Thankfully Clem hadn't said anything so Violet was able to breathe a sigh of relief as Marlon, grinning, led them all back into Ericsons where Ruby and Omar were waiting for them.

"Huge haul and some extra bonuses, we got some good stuff for eating tonight." He told them. "Willy, Tenn, you guys both did great for your first time."

Both boys smiled and Mitch grinned, ruffling Willy's hair. "Nice work out there."

Aasim merely gave a small smile at that. "Well, he certainly kept you in line, you didn't try any of your usual reckless stunts."

"Hey watch it." Mitch protested.

Louis laughed. "C'mon guys, let's get freshened up and Omar can prepare dinner. You're in luck Ruby, none of us got hurt this time.

"Good." She remarked. "You're all starting to take care of yourselves. That's good."

Violet shared a sheepish look with Clem, hearing that Mitch was, for once, not usual reckless self after what she had pulled. But they said nothing and quickly freshened up, meanwhile they waited for dinner while Willy, as had been his job since he arrived, manned the watch tower and kept an eye out for any threats. Seated around their usual spot, waiting while Omar cooked Marlon looked over at Clementine, currently sat between Violet and Louis and spoke up.

"So, Clem, that's a year you've been with us now." He said. "Finally got used to it, huh?"

Clementine grinned. "Yeah, I'd say I have. I must admit, I was...worried at first, but now...I'm really glad I met all you guys."

They all smiled at that, then after a pause, Aasim added his own thoughts.

"Yeah, must be a big change, I mean...you came from Coruscant before, right?"

"That's right." Clementine confirmed.

"Violet's from there too." Brody chimed in. "Did you guys ever meet?"

"Ah no." Violet replied. "I think I'd remember."

Clementine shook her head. "Coruscant's a big place, a very big place, a lot of people. We were probably on different sides of the planet."

Violet nodded and the others murmured their agreement before they all continued to make small talk until dinner was ready, Willy descending from the watch tower to join them as they all began to eat.

Finally, with it being late at night, Clementine smiled lightly as she finished getting ready for bed.

"Hey, Clem."

She turned to see Violet smiling as she stood by her bed. Hand outstretched as a power cell floated towards Clementine. Smiling Clementine raised her hand and soon she was the one making the power cell float, Violet lowered her hand and nodded.

"In case you need in the night." She explained. "It's a spare."

Clem nodded. "Thanks Vi."

She lowered it down onto her desk and both girls prepared themselves to sleep. Or at least Violet did, for as soon as she was, with her back turned to Clem, the other girl reached under her bed and pulled out a moderately sized box. Biting her lip pensively, Clem opened the box to reveal the object inside. A metal cylinder about ten and a half inches long, there were a few switches on the side and a belt ring while the top seemed hollow. It also seemed strangely clunky, and had two differing colours, as if made from two different metals in places. It was in fact a weapon, one that had become rather rare since the rise of the Empire, a Lightsaber. Reaching out gently and letting her fingers glide across the weapon briefly, Clem shut the box and put it back under her bed before lying down and trying to get to sleep. Once again, she failed to spot the Imperial Probe Droid at the window which then flew away and up high into the sky, getting within range to begin transmitting it's findings to the ship that was currently in orbit.
