Chapter 6: Tension
Clem grimaced, trying still to hold Gabe up as he seemed to be weakening.
"A rebel group?"
The older man nodded and Clem looked to him carefully. Tall and thin with black greying hair, fair skin and dark eyes, the younger man standing next to him, around his mid-twenties, was fair skinned with dark hair and eyes, unshaven and also tall, with a slightly bulkier build.
"That's right, The Invisibles. I'm Peter Randall, this is my nephew Nick." The older man explained. "This is our ship the Eclipse."
Nick nodded. "Yeah, so you're the Jedi, huh?"
Clem started at his bluntness. "Um, Clementine, my name's Clementine."
"Well it's good we got you when we did, Clementine." The other man said.
She saw her earlier assessment of his appearance was correct, he was tall, normal build with tan skin, black thick hair and unshaven, black eyes.
"Carlos, I'm the medic aboard this ship" He introduced himself. "Now...no doubt you have questions?"
"Well yes, but...if you're the medic, there's something more important here." Clem remarked.
She shifted, trying to draw the attention to Gabe's wound.
Carlos glowered. "He's one of the Imperials, you brought him aboard our ship, expect us to treat him."
"He betrayed the Imperials." Clementine remarked. "I would've been killed if he hadn't turned on them."
"Bullshit." A female voice cut in. "It's clearly a trick.
It was another woman who entered from another part of the ship, glaring.
She was a slender woman with light brown skin, black curly hair and black eyes, glaring darkly at Gabe.
"He's an Imperial and that's all there is too it." She snapped.
Peter sighed. "Francine, that's enough."
Francine scoffed. "Oh sure, so he saves your life that automatically forgives him for everything he's done."
"He's not done anything, look at him." Clementine snapped. "What could he possibly have done at his age, he's clearly just started out and already wants out."
"Doesn't mean he's trustworthy." Nick remarked.
"Exactly, how do we know this isn't some trick, to get us to reveal our base to the Imperials." Francine shot back.
Clementine grimaced, this was getting out of hand, especially as Gabe was weakening more, he'd already passed out.
"Can we discuss this after he gets some medical treatment, or are the rebels really monsters who'd let a boy die just because they can't be bothered." She snapped.
"Excuse me, how dare you!?" Francine snapped.
"Enough." A new voice cut in.
The speaker was a man in his thirties, tall and well-built with dark brown hair, brown eyes and tanned skin.
"Javier, this isn't-" Carlos began.
"I thought you said you were a medic Carlos." Javier snapped. "So why aren't you doing your job? Medics treat injured people, that's that. I guess you're only pretending to be one."
Nick sighed. "Oh this is ridiculous-"
"No Nick, that's my nephew who has done nothing wrong except be born under Imperial control, like all of us." Javier shot back. "So the way I see it, he gets treated and you all stop this pointless bickering, or I'll take him to get treatment myself and go on my way."
Francine turned to Javier Garcia at that. "You-You'd betray us Javier, after everything?"
"Nope." He replied. "You're all betraying me, so...I'm just walking away, refusing to work with hypocrites. After all, what kind of people claim to be better than, say...the Empire, but will let an injured person die, just because they want to."
Clementine was startled by this, it certainly wasn't the support she expected.
Then even more support from a young woman who entered, she was around twenty with a skinny petite figure, short but thick black hair, brown eyes behind glasses and olive skin.
"Dad. You're actually refusing to treat an injured person." She burst out, sounding horrified. "That's...you told me as medics we have a duty to help people who are hurt, however we find them."
Carlos turned. "Sarah, this isn't something you-"
"I'll take him." She said, her tone rather insistent.
Relieved Clementine nodded and let this young woman, Sarah, take Gabe from her and lead him to the medical bay.
Francine hurried after all. "Hold it Sarah, you're not being left alone with that Imperial."
Once they left Clementine glared at the rest, crossing her arms.
"So, you save me, tell me you need my help, then proceed to show me exactly why I shouldn't help you." She snarked. "Yeah, we're off to a great start."
Peter raised his hands. "Alright, alright, can we please calm down and just talk about this?"
Clem sighed. "Alright, what's going on?"
"Well, you know us three...as for Francine sorry about her. She has a real grudge against Imperials because of what happened to her. They forced her out of business in Coruscant a few years ago." Peter continued. "The other is Carlos' daughter Sarah, she's learning how to be a medic from her father."
Clementine quirked an eyebrow. "And already a much better one than him by the looks of it."
Carlos bristled. "Let's just stay on task, this is Javier Garcia, our best pilot...he also has to deal with the rest of his family being in the Empire."
Javier sighed. "Yeah, my brother David is an Imperial Admiral...his new wife, Gabe...my niece Mariana...I can't help but worry about them but...I have a job to do?"
"So wait, you're a pilot, but you're not piloting this ship?" Clem asked.
Javier smirked. "It's Pete's ship, that's why."
"Yes and nobody but Nick and I get to fly 'my baby'." Pete cut in.
Javier continued. "Anyway, I'm trusted enough to man the guns."
Carlos nodded. "Well, any other questions."
Clementine pondered for a moment.
Finally she sighed.
"Three actually, how did you trust me about Gabe so easily Pete? Who are the Invisibles and what do they want with me?"
"First question is easy." Pete remarked. "I have a very accurate bullshit detector, simple as that."
"Anyway, the Invisibles are a rebel group that use hit and run tactics to accomplish their mission. We're a group that are dedicated not only to the return of the Republic, but of the Jedi as well." Nick explained. "As such we're looking for any surviving Jedi, or Jedi artefacts…Which is why we continued to search."
"It was pure luck we found you, on both sides it seems." Carlos then added.
Clementine sighed. "I've...I don't feel lucky, I've lost so much, my friends are all dead and now…"
"I'm sorry...and I know we haven't had the best start, but I'm hoping you'll come with us...help us." Carlos said.
"I don't know what I can do. You say you're after a Jedi. Okay, I am one, but I'm just a Padawan, I never finished my training, my master was killed three years ago…" She explained.
Pete shrugged his shoulders. "Beggars can't be choosers, we'll take what we can get. Please, at the very least, come with us, we have somewhere safe for you."
"Alright then...I'll come along. I'm not sure what you expect me to accomplish, but I'll do what I can."
The others seemed satisfied with that and Pete and Nick returned to the cockpit while Javier sat at a nearby seat.
"Clementine...could we talk in private for a moment?" Carlos then asked.
Surprised and unsure, Clementine nevertheless agreed and followed him to another part of the ship.
End of chapter, hope you enjoyed it, read and review please.
