Chapter 7: A Favour for a Favour

Moving to the rear to the Eclipse Clementine followed Carlos, wondering just what it was he wanted her for. Finally they stopped and Carlos seemed almost lost for a moment, as if contemplating how to phrase his next words.

Finally he spoke. "Like Pete said, we need you, we need a Jedi...The Invisibles have been searching for Jedi artefacts and surviving Jedi for five years. But for me...it's more personal."

"Personal?"

"I need a Jedi...for my daughter's sake." Carlos explained finally.

"Your daughter, Sarah?" Clem queried, bewildered. Then it made sense. "She's Force Sensitive."

Carlos nodded. "We only started to realize...about two months ago. Sarah is, I've tried my hardest to keep her safe...she doesn't know that the Empire isn't even the worst of it, the other kind of scum you get out there, bounty hunters, the Hutts...But to have this extra danger added on top of that…"

'She doesn't even know about those things...protecting her...sounds more like overprotective to me.'
Clem mused, but didn't say anything.

"That's why I needed to ask you this, a personal request." Carlos continued. "I need you to help Sarah control her Force capabilities."

Clementine started at that. "Wait, you mean, train her...I already told you, I'm just a Padawan, I never finished my own training, I can't-"

"No, no...I'm not asking you to teach her to be a Jedi." Carlos insisted quickly. "For you to have lasted this long, you must have learned how to mask your own Force Powers...That's what I want you to teach Sarah."

Clem relaxed hearing that, that was something she knew she could do.

However it wasn't without risks.

"Well, yes, I could teach her that." Clem remarked. "But it would take some time to master and while learning it, she could be vulnerable...I'm sorry, but there's literally no other way to learn this ability other than trying to do it and that means failing at it more than once."

Carlos sighed. "Well, that's a risk we're going to have to take."

"If it protects your daughter, Carlos, of course it is."

They both turned to see Francine standing there and that was when Clem got her idea. She admitted it was probably petty of her, but she didn't care.

"However, if you want me to teach Sarah...you have to get in that medical bay and do your job." She told Carlos, her gaze never leaving Francine. "Treat Gabe's injury and start treating him properly, since without him you wouldn't have a Jedi here at all."

Carlos merely sighed but nodded; Francine however barely reacted, even if Clem's tone made it clear why she was making this deal.

"Might be a good idea actually. That wound might be more than Sarah can handle yet." Was all Francine said with a shrug. "Plus it'll give her a chance to talk to our young Jedi here, get a little head start before we arrive at our destination."

"Alright, alright, I'll go let Sarah know." Carlos said quickly. "Thank you, Clementine."

With that he made his way towards the medical bay.

After a short pause Francine shook her head.

"Well I better get to work." She said before speaking up as Clem's expression changed upon seeing Gabe through the open door of the medical bay. "Oh and before you start barking, dear girl, he's cuffed to the bed for his own protection. Treating a wound like that is painful and he kept flailing which just made it worse."

Clementine swallowed back her retort and replied calmly. "Just so long as he's freed once they're done treating him."

Francine merely shrugged. "Not my call."

With that she stalked off and Clementine returned to the seat in the main area of the ship where she sat down heavily, looking around. Francine was still in the back, checking on the mechanics and engine of the ship, Carlos and Sarah were with Gabe in the medical bay while Pete and Nick were in the cockpit, the only other person not doing anything was Javier. He instead sat anxiously, waiting, in a the chair closest to the medical bay.

'He said Gabe was his nephew...so he ends up a rebel while his nephew and, from what he said, brother serve the Empire.' She mused. 'Talk about a tricky family situation.'

She was jolted from her thoughts by the medical bay door opening and Sarah emerging, approaching her. She quickly straightened up.

"So, Clementine, right?" Sarah queried as she sat down next to her. "I'm Sarah, but you...already know that."

She nodded. "Yeah, yeah, I'm Clementine and, your dad already told me about you."

There was a flicker in Sarah's gaze at that. "He...he told you, then you know, I'm-?"

Clem nodded. "Yeah, he asked me to help you with that...I'll do what I can but, it's not gonna be easy."

"Right, right I understand." Sarah replied quietly. "So...you really are a Jedi?"

"I was, but I never got a chance to finish my training." Clem repeated.

She lapsed into silence at that, looking down at her lightsaber which she held in her hands now.

Sarah looked down too, taking note of the blade's unusual appearance, the different colours and apparently materials that seemed to make it up.

"I've...I've never seen a real lightsaber before...but the ones I have seen, holograms and such. They've never looked like that?" Sarah wondered aloud.

Clem nodded slowly. "That's because, three years ago, my lightsaber was damaged, The switch and the kyber crystal, I was able to salvage them. But the emitter, the sleeve...they were one. That was when, when my master…"

"Oh, he...I'm so sorry." Sarah gasped, realizing now.

"It's alright. He...He died trying to protect me, his lightsaber got broken too, but I was able to salvage the emitter and sleeve, used those parts to repair mine. I guess what I've really got here is one lightsaber, made of the parts from two, mine and my masters." Clementine explained.

Sarah stared in amazement and then swallowed. "Um, your master, who-"

"His name was Lee...Lee Everett." Clementine explained. "I...I was lucky he choose me to be his apprentice. My views didn't exactly go down well with many Jedi, I kept, questioning the Order's doctrines. But Lee, he shared those views, in fact, he shared a lot of views with an old friend of his. A Jedi called Qui Gon Jinn. Both of them were incredibly skilled and easily strong enough to be Jedi Masters. But because of their views, they were not permitted a place on the Council."

"He sounds amazing." Sarah replied with a gentle smile. "How did you survive Order 66?"

Clementine had a far away look in her eye at that. "Lee never trusted the clones, he refused to have any clones under his command during the war...he fought with a volunteer militia unit instead. When the order came, there were no clones to try and kill him, then we hard Master Kenobi's warning and fled. Until we were ambushed three years ago and he died to save me...I was lost then, until a year ago, when I ended up on Crunus."

Sarah could only stare in awe having finally heard Clem's story.

Any other conversation however was put to rest when Pete suddenly announced.

"Okay everyone, get ready, we're about to land on Brun."

Everybody was quick to find a seat and strap in, as they did Clem turned to Sarah.

"Brun?"

"A dwarf planet with no sentient lifeforms save some local animals." She explained. "We use it as a supply base, guess we're stocking up before going home."

Clem nodded and waited they entered the atmosphere of Brun and touched down to land.
