Chapter 8: Opening Minds

Soon the Eclipse landed and the doors opened and, with the exception of Gabe and Pete, everyone disembarked. Clementine looked around, as a Jedi she had travelled around much of the galaxy, but she had never heard of this place. It was a reasonably pretty place, a grassy planet with a few small forests and rock formations as well as single rocks embedded in the ground.

"Nick, shouldn't you stay on the ship?" Francine asked.

Nick shook his head. "I have to do this okay, my uncle can handle it, I just need to-"

"I get you want to prove yourself to him, but he could use some help." Francine continued. "I mean if that Imperial boy slips his cuffs and falls over and hurts himself, I'd imagine someone would find a way to blame us for it."

Clementine rolled her eyes before turning to Carlos. "Sarah and I will go and get started on her training."

"Right, okay, don't go far, we're only grabbing the supplies we need and getting out of here." He replied.

Nodding Clem led the way and Sarah followed as they headed for one of the nearby small forests. Once out of earshot Clementine shook her head.

"Honestly, I am getting tired of her, she just can't switch off, can she." She snapped.

Sarah sighed. "She has her reasons, she lost everything to the Imperials. She used to run a bar in Coruscant and one day she through out some Imperial soldiers who were too drunk and rowdy. They cam back the next day and forcibly shut the place down, destroying her livelihood and would've killed her if Conrad hadn't saved her."

"Conrad?" Clem asked, actually surprised at what had just been revealed.

Sarah nodded. "He's one of our leaders. But yeah, that's what happened, she lost everything to the Imperials, that bar had been in her family for generations. She's hated Imperials ever since."

Clem was startled but now realized it made sense why Francine had acted the way she did now.

Putting the matter to the back of her mind she focused on the most important thing for now as she and Sarah reached a small clearing with a rock in the ground.

"This'll do." Clem said calmly.

She prepared herself, trying to empty herself of any emotion and allow herself to focus on the Force as it flowed around them. She climbed onto the rock and sat cross-legged on it.

"Okay, I'm to teach you how to control and hide your presence in the Force, so people that would try to find you, who could discover your Force sensitivity, are unable to do so." She explained. "But first, you need to be aware of the Force, to understand it and feel it."

Sarah swallowed nervously but nodded. "O-okay…"

"For this to work Sarah, you have to stay calm, remember the Force is all around us, it binds the galaxy together. Everything, everything living is made up of the Force." Clementine explained. "It is an energy field created by all living beings, it surrounds us and with your mind clear and open, when you calm...You will feel it and realize just what it means."

Sarah nodded, taking this all in, actually feeling overwhelmed by this. Clementine smiled lightly.

"It sounds like a lot, but trust me, when you actually feel it, you'll, you'll see." She gestured to the opposite side of the rock. "Sit down."

Sarah quickly did so, sitting the same way as Clementine.

"Okay now, here's what I want you to do. Close your eyes, clear your mind and reach out with it." She explained.

Sarah nodded and closed her eyes, taking a deep breath and doing as Clem said as best she could.

There was a moment, a moment of nothingness and then suddenly, she was almost overtaking by strong feelings, a sense of life, of movement, of serenity.

"I...I feel it, it's...it's beautiful." She whispered.

Clementine smiled lightly. "Yes, it is...this is just you sensing the Force at a basic level, there is so much more about it. So much to see, feel, experience but remember, you have to be careful, you can't let your emotions get the better of you, channel your emotions, but never let them overtake you. That's when you start to lose control and head towards the Dark Side. Only by being vigilant will you be able to avoid falling into it."

"R-right...But I thought you were only supposed to teach me to-" Sarah replied.

"I am, that's why I'm telling you this. Even just trying to hide your presence in the Force, you still must be wary, for the temptation of the Dark Side is always there." Clementine explained calmly. "You need to-"

Sarah suddenly gasped, going tense.

"Sarah?"

Sarah could only tremble, feeling it drawing nearer. "I feel something, something else, something dark...angry, it's…"

Clementine knew that could only be one thing. "Nyx...Sarah, stop, pull back, Sarah!"

Sarah screamed, her eyes shooting open as she fell backwards off the rock, thankfully landing softly in the grass. Clem quickly scrambled off to get to Sarah's side.

"Are you okay?" She asked worriedly.

"That was...that presence, lashed out at me, I felt like my mind was...was being attacked, I...I felt like something was pulling out of my mind." Sarah explained. "Like a, a place...a place just like this and…"

Clementine flinched. "We have to go, now."

Sarah was startled but quickly followed Clem as she began to hurry out of the forest.

They reached the others as they were loading boxes onto the ship.

"We have to go!" Clem yelled. "That woman, Nyx, she knows we're here."

"What?!" Carlos gasped. "Sarah, are you-?"

Sarah shivered. "I feel cold…"

"The connection." Clementine explained. "I was trying to help Sarah understand the Force so she could do what you asked me to teach her. Never expected Nyx to be trying to find us using the Force though. Her mind connected with Sarah's and she was able to pull our location out of Sarah's mind."

Carlos immediately pulled Sarah close. "This is what you meant by risks. Alright everyone, hurry, we need to get out of here."

The others didn't even argue, they quickly loaded the last of the boxes on board and all hurried.

"What's going on?" Pete gasped.

"Uncle, we've gotta go, quickly, Vader's Fist is after us." Nick cried out.

Pete didn't need telling twice, he immediately turned back to the cockpit, Javier checked up on Gabe in the medical bay. He was awake now, still restrained but seemed to note their fears and was worried. Everyone else strapped in as the Eclipse took off from Brun and began to leave its atmosphere and out into space, only to find themselves surrounded by TIE Fighters.
