Chapter 9: Desperate Measures

"Not good." Pete hissed. "Javi, get to the guns!"

Javier nodded, getting up. "On it!"

He rushed to man the guns while the others could only brace themselves as Pete and Nick tried to keep the Eclipse moving and to avoid any attack. The roar of the TIE fighters was deafening as they began regrouping, that was Clementine realized.

"They've only just deployed, we caught them by surprise. They were nearby but not actually at Brun when Nyx sensed us." She called out. "They've only just got here so they're not in a combat formation yet."

"That's gives us a few seconds." Francine cried. "Might be what we need."

Soon the Eclipse banked left and soon manoeuvred into position against one of the TIE fighters and down in the gun bay Javier locked on and opened fire. The ship's laser cannons blasted at the TIE fighter but shocking did not destroy it.

"What the-!?" He cried.

Seeing this Pete grimaced. "Oh this is not good."

Clem shook her head. "I have a bad feeling about this."

"Too late!"

The TIE fighters had got into formation and now swooped in, opening fire as Pete frantically tried to dodge, Javi took his chances and blind-fired a few shots but once again, they didn't seem to even faze the TIE fighters.

"These things are supposed to have the thinnest hulls imaginable. What is going on with this?" Nick complained.

But it was clear they were in real trouble now and things were looking grim.

Then suddenly, from the medical bay, almost forgotten, they heard Gabe.

"What's going on out there!?"

"TIE fighters, we're under attack and we can't seem to destroy them!" Carlos, who was nearest, answered.

There was a momentary silence then Gabe spoke up.

"TIE fighters from Vader's Fist?" He queried.

This time it was Francine who responded, standing up. "Yes, TIE fighters from your little group, what of it?"

"You can't just shoot them like regular TIE fighters, that won't work." He began.

"Yeah, we're kinda already discovered that." Francine snarked.

"Their armour plating is much stronger. Look if you get me out of here and to the guns, I can help." Gabe explained. "They have a weak point."

"You are not touching our guns boy." Francine said, although Clem noticed she was heading towards the medical bay. "But what you are gonna do is get down there and tell your uncle this weak point, got it."

By now she was inside the medical bay and removing the restraints holding Gabe to the bed. He didn't reply, just leapt up and quickly made his way towards the gun controls where Javi was.

"Gabe, what?!"

Gabe shook his head. "No time, their more heavily armoured than other TIE fighters, except the underside, you have to fire at the underside of the central part of the ship, it's the only way."

Javi considered for a moment and quickly relayed. "Pete, you hear that, get us so the guns are pointing under one of those things!"

Pete quickly jerked the controls and, catching the TIE fighters off guard with their move, they managed to get in a good position.

"Okay, now!"

Javi opened fire and just as Gabe said, the ships that were hit on the underside were destroyed.

Seeing this relief filled the others and Francine in particular let out a sigh of relief.

"I'm used to gambling, usually always win." She noted. "But that's the first time I've played odds that steep, choosing to trust that boy…"

Clem just shook her head, smirking. "Well, it looks like it paid off."

Despite their weakness being discovered, the remaining TIE fighters were unable to respond quickly enough to stop the rest of them being destroyed. But at that moment another ship suddenly appeared. It was a TIE Advanced fighter, the sight of which made Gabe's blood run cold.

"Not good...that's Nyx, that's her personal fighter."

Javi grimaced. "Let me guess, doesn't share the same weakness."

Gabe nodded. "Exactly."

The others overheard this and fear returned.

Carlos shook his head. "Pete, get us outta here."

"Gotta hold her off, only way to do that and I need time." Pete shot back.

So, with no other choice, Javi opened fire on Nyx, she didn't even rely on her stronger armour, her ship instead dodging the laser blasts, meanwhile Pete worked to put in the coordinates into the NaviComputer. Undeterred by the laser blasts, Nyx began to open fire on the Eclipse.

'Not good...it's risky, but…' Clem thought to herself.

She saw the look Sarah gave her, the fear and panic but she merely nodded to her, remaining calm and then closed her eyes. Despite the risks, Clem knew what she was doing and sure enough, as she reached out with her mind she found the dark seething hatred that embroiled Nyx's mind. She prodded at it with her own, Nyx responded as Clem expected, mentally lashing out. But Clem was already accomplishing her task. It was harder for Nyx to steer her ship and fire upon the Eclipse, while at the same time having to battle Clementine in her mind.

It proved to be all the distraction that was needed, for it bought them enough time for Pete to finish.

"Okay, we're ready." He told them. "Hang on."

They all did so and Pete pulled the switch, activating the Eclipse's hyperdrive and within moments they were gone, leaving Nyx to watch in impotent fury as her prey escaped yet again. With the ship now safely in hyperspace, everyone quickly left their seats to gather in the main body of the ship, Javi and Gabe emerged and the relief was palpable everywhere.

"You saved us, kid." Pete said. "Looks like Clementine was right to twist our arms like that."

Gabe shook his head. "I just, I did what needed to be done…"

Biting her lip Francine asked. "Those men...the ones in those ships, they were comrades of yours…"

"No, they were just people I had to work with...because my dad pulled strings." He replied bitterly.

Javi gently squeezed Gabe's shoulder. "Well that's over now, trust me. Whatever happens from now, can be on your terms and merits."

The others nodded and Clem was relieved to see that Gabe had managed to win the Invisibles trust.

She then turned to Pete. "So, we're going to your base now?"

"Yes, time to for you to meet our leaders, so we're heading to our base, our...secret homeworld, Valunt."
