Chapter 26: Escape

At once the group began to react in a panic as already alarms were sounding, the TIE fighters swooping in and opening fire on their ship. Docked with the cargo transport as they were, they were sitting ducks.

"Shit, this isn't good." Nick hissed. "What are we going to do?"

Clementine did her best to stay calm. "We need to get back to the ship, now. We've got what we came for, there's no need to stay."

The others nodded and began to rush back towards the ship.

"C'mon, quickly." Carlos yelled.

But at that moment there was a loud noise as the door to Carlos' right burst open, knocking him down.

"Carlos!" Clem cried as she rushed over. Suddenly however the whole ship rocked, it was clear the TIE fighters had already begun their attack and were even willing to destroy the cargo ship to accomplish their goal.

"Get them, don't let them escape, hurry before the ship is destroyed."

It was the crew of the cargo transport that had destroyed the door, they had reclaimed weapons and were coming to try and fight them.

"Clem!" Brody cried out.

She didn't need to however, Clem was already acting and, as they opened fire, she ignited her lightsaber and began deflecting the blaster bolts as she hurried to get to Carlos.

Gabe grimaced as he stood, blaster aimed but not firing.

"Can't get a good shot." He whispered.

Javi shook his head. "None of us can, we have to trust Clem and make our way back to the ship. Just grab the last supply crates and get back to ship, go."

Brody nodded and tapped Gabe's shoulder. "C'mon."

Gabe sighed. "Alright, alright."

They hurried to do just that, joining Nick who was leading the way. Meanwhile Clem worked quickly, soon reaching Carlos' prone form. To her relief he groaned, indicating he was still alive.

"Carlos, can you-?"

Carlos nodded, struggling to his feet. "I'm alright, I just...urgh, my head's finally stopped spinning."

Clementine nodded, continuing to deflect. "C'mon, we've gotta get out of here."

Carlos nodded and they hurried down to where Javi still waited for them, finally getting out of the way and rushing back to join the others at their ship. They soon found Francine waiting for them at where the ship was docked.

"C'mon guys, quickly!" She cried.

Javi nodded and quickly called on the communicator. "Paul, we're about to get out, you?"

Paul replied. "All my crew are back on board, we're about to disengage, we've trying to hold them off but we've taken damage, we can't stay here any longer, we have to get going NOW!"

Javi nodded to the others. "You heard the man, let's-"

But then he stopped dead, as did they as they heard the noises around them.

The crew of the supply ship had moved quicker than anticipated and were moving to surround them, they wouldn't be able to get on board the ship and disengage fast enough before they'd board the Eclipse and use numbers to their advantage, now the element of surprise was gone.

Clem knew it was bad. 'We can't take them all out and I can't defend against them forever…'

But before they could discuss their worries, Francine suddenly stepped up.

"Guys, get on board."

"What, but…" Javi began.

Francine shook her head. "Do it, this is the only way."

Confused they began to board the ship as the Imperials closed in, only for them to stop dead this time. Looking back Clem gasped.

"Francine, no!" She cried.

Javi looked back too and his eyes widened in horror. Francine was standing there, holding back the crew from daring to come closer, as she held up a thermal detonator.

"Get out of here you guys, do it."

"No, don't…" Clem gasped, realizing now what she was going to do.

Javi shook his head. "Don't be crazy, you need to-"

"I know what I'm doing, this is the only way...it's time these Imperials paid and I...Tell Conrad I'm sorry." Was all she said.

"Francine!" Javi cried.

But he had no choice but to forcibly disengage the ship and pull away, closing the door and urging Pete to get away, seeing the Dauntless doing the same, just as Francine activated the detonator, blowing a large hole in the cargo ship, there was no saving the ship and indeed no survivors, that much was clear.

After a moment of stunned silence, Paul came over the communicator.

"What was that, what's going on?"

Javi replied heavily. "It was Francine...she sacrificed herself...so we could escape."

Paul gasped in horror. "Francine…"

"Um guys, those fighters are coming back, we've gotta go, now!" Pete called out.

They quickly strapped in and, alongside the Dauntless, finally escaped into hyperspace, fleeing the TIE fighters and making their return to Valunt with their supplies, but without Francine. It was clear from the faces and heavy mood of those in the Eclipse that they were currently mourning her and Clem could only imagine how things would be back at Valunt. But there was something else on her mind, something that came up when Carlos spoke.

"I still can't believe this happened. Everything was under control, until those fighters appeared, but how…"

Clem looked up. "There was no disturbance in the Force. For them to have found us…there's only one possible way, a very unfortunate way...There's a traitor in the Invisibles."

They all froze as they realized the horrible implications of just what that meant.
