My Brother's Best Friend

Chapter 8

Dana POV

After Mulder and I declare our love to each other everything gets better. The first week back had been tough. Living with Mulder and constantly bickering with him had been so tiring and exhausting. I didn't get much sleep and I was tired when I got into work in the morning. Ethan kept messaging me and calling me when we weren't together - he wanted to see me every day now that we were both back in town. It felt restraining being with him after we got back… it felt suffocating. He wanted me to meet his parents and he wanted to meet mine. It was all too much and too soon. I mean, we didn't even have sex!

Being with Mulder now makes me realise why it had felt so wrong with Ethan. I love Mulder, I always have. I thought I was getting over him… but now I don't think that's possible. I'll always be in love with Mulder.

When Bill and Tara are home, the four of us have a lot of laughs together. We have dinner together, play boardgames in the living room, go down to the park or the beach on the weekends. And when they stay at Tara's place… Mulder and I can finally be together. It feels so right when he comes home from work and I greet him with a kiss. When we cook dinner together. When we make love. When I fall asleep and wake up next to him.

I stop by my parents' place a few times a week - I love being close to them again. I catch up with my old highschool friends as well whenever we all have time to do something. Between working at the coffee shop, seeing family and friends, spending time with Mulder… the weeks fly by.

One evening we're sprawled out on the couch. Mulder's on top of me, kissing my neck as I run my hands over his shoulder and into his hair. Bill and Tara have just gone to bed. Something's playing on the tv but neither of us are paying attention to it. We're just pretending to be down here to watch a movie to put off going to each our separate bedroom, as we do whenever Bill spends the night at home. Well, most of the time.

I love the way he kisses me. He's always so extremely passionate, sometimes it's almost overwhelming. He makes me forget about everything else, when we're together it's like it's just the two of us and the rest of the world simply fades away.

"You make me so fucking hard," he breathes into my ear before his mouth attacks the sensitive skin right below my ear.

"I want you so bad, Mulder!" I breathe out between moans, my hips gyrating as he's thrusting gently against me.

I move my hands down his back and pull on his white t-shirt. I try to pull it over his head but he keeps kissing and sucking on my neck.

"You're gonna leave a mark," I warn him. "Mulder! Stop!"

"Mmmmh," he just hums as he moves back, sitting up on the couch and pulling me with him until I'm straddling him. "Maybe I want to mark you."

"Why?" I ask him as I finally move the t-shirt from his body and run my hands over his chest and down his arms.

"Because you're mine," he whispers, leaning forward and going back to my throat again.

"Oh God!" I moan, it feels beyond amazing but I don't want marks on my neck. "Stop it… please!"

"Mmmmh, here then?" he asks me, unbuttoning the front of my casual summer dress and moving his mouth down to the top of my breasts.

"Oh," I suck in a breath. "Go on then."

I lean my head back as he devours the skin on my breasts. My dress is unbuttoned down to my waist now and it's hanging loosely, halfway down my arms, exposing my white lace bra. My hands are still on his arms and I tighten my grip on him as I grind against him, feeling his hard cock through his casual, beige shorts.

"Jesus Christ!" Tara's voice breaks our reverie and Mulder reluctantly pulls his face away from my breasts so I can tighten my dress around me again, quickly buttoning myself up. "Dammit guys, I told you to be more careful!"

Mulder just leans his head back against the couch and chuckles. I try to move off of him but his hands on my thighs are keeping me in place.

"What are you even doing down here? You went to bed," Mulder asks her.

"I was thirsty!" she rolls her eyes at him as she moves to the kitchen. "When are you gonna tell Bill anyway?"

"Tara!" Mulder sighs. "Do you mind fucking off?"

"Mulder!" I interject, wrinkling my brow at his language - Tara just laughs at him though as she fills a glass with water.

"Alright, alright," she says before downing her water and walking back towards the stairs. "You know, it's a wonder Bill hasn't walked in on you guys yet! You might want to tell him before that happens…"

She's referring to the fact that she's made a habit of walking in on us. Over the past few weeks she's caught us red handed a handful of times… just kissing obviously… except one time. She'd made the mistake of walking into the guestroom where I'm staying. Mulder had been standing against the wall, leaning his head back with his eyes closed and his mouth slightly open. His pants and boxers around his thighs. His one hand holding up his t-shirt and his other hand entangled in my hair as I was on my knees in front of him… his cock in my mouth. She quickly left again and she hasn't come into my room without knocking since then.

"We'll tell him when we're ready," Mulder rolls his eyes at her with a sigh.

"If you say so," she chuckles, disappearing up the stairs.

"Come here," Mulder smirks at me, his hand at my nape pulling me in for a kiss.

"Mulder?" I mumble against his lips.

"Yeah?" he sighs, pulling back but tightening his arms around me.

"When did you and Tara get so close?" I ask him - I've been wondering about this ever since he first told her about us.

"Well," he chuckles. "We were always friendly… but I guess after this Christmas… I wasn't really looking after myself, not doing too well after what I did to you… and Tara was the only one to really notice… she looked after me, I guess."

"How were you not looking after yourself?" I ask sweetly, suddenly very worried for him - I caress his cheek with my knuckles as I ask him this.

"I didn't really sleep…" he shrugs. "I overworked myself. I took on cases and worked out way too much, overstraining myself physically and mentally… the only time I got any sleep or time off was when Tara ordered me to."

"I didn't know," I say sadly, caressing his face gingerly. "I guess she's like the big sister you never had."

"She's only two months older than me!" he states. "But yeah, in a way she is."

"I always liked Tara," I smile at him. "Even more so now - I'm glad you had someone to look after you."

"Me too," he nods. "Ugh, I still can't believe she saw my cock!"

"Mulder, I doubt that she looked!" I roll my eyes at him.

"Dana," he chuckles. "It popped right out of your mouth when you looked at her - she'd have to be pretty blind not to notice it standing at attention like that."

"It is pretty huge," I say playfully, beginning to move my hips against him again. "But I hope she didn't see it…"

"Yeah?" he chuckles. "Why's that?"

"It belongs to me," I tell him seriously, leaning in for a kiss. "Nobody but me should get to see it."

"It does belong to you," he agrees, his hands moving under my dress and closing around my ass as he helps me grind against him.

"I love your cock, Mulder," I moan into his mouth. "I love how hard you get for me. I love the way you taste. The way you feel inside of me."

"You're so perfect, Dana!" he groans into our kiss. "It scares me how much I love you."

He's so honest. So passionate. Everything with Mulder is so raw. He's right, it is scary. But it's also amazing.

We end up on the floor as we make love, the soft rug cushioning Mulder's back slightly.

Afterwards we pick up our clothes and sneak into Mulder's room. I don't want to wake up alone and Mulder seems to have the same idea.

"Hey, Dana?" Mulder says, just as I was about to drift off to sleep.

"Yeah," I answer him, enjoying the feel of his hard body spooned up to me.

"I have a few days off work in a couple of weeks," he says quietly, his hand tickling the skin on my stomach. "Do you want to go somewhere with me? I mean, if you can get a few days off at the coffee shop…"

"That sounds nice," I sigh happily. "Did you have somewhere in mind?"

"Well, my parents have a cabin close to Sequoia National Park, it's really beautiful there and it's not too far away - just a four hour drive," he tells me, giving my shoulder a kiss.

"I'd love to go there with you," I smile into my pillow.

"Good…" he trails off. "Because I asked my parents if we could borrow the cabin and they said yes… if they could meet you…"

"Meet me?" I turn around slightly. "You told your parents about me?"

"Well, yeah… I told them I was seeing someone…" he sounds nervous.

"Do you want me to meet your parents, Mulder?" I ask him.

"I… yeah, I do," he sighs. "If it's okay…"

"It's okay," I agree, feeling all bubbly and warm inside albeit slightly nervous too.

"Really?" he sounds so happy and relieved. "Because I have Thursday and Friday off in a few weeks and I thought we could go to my parents' place for dinner Wednesday evening and get the keys and then just drive straight there. I mean it would be late in the evening when we arrive but we'd have three whole days there before leaving Sunday."

"You've given this a lot of thought," I smile at him in the dark, feeling quite emotional suddenly.

"I want you to meet my mom and dad," he says confidently. "And my sister."

"Do you think they'll like me?" I wonder.

"They'll love you," he chuckles. "Everyone does."

"I don't know about that," I chuckle as I roll my eyes. "So you don't think it's too early for me to meet them?"

"No," he says surely. "I know we won't have been together for much longer than a month by then… but we've kinda been together for way longer than that."

"True," I nod. "And we've known each other forever."

"Pretty much," he agrees, kissing my shoulder again.

I'm so touched that he wants me to meet his family. I wish I felt the same way about introducing him to my own family but obviously it's different with the history between him and my dad, as unjustified as my dad's disdain for Mulder is.

I can't wait to spend an extended weekend completely alone with Mulder either. We never get to spend that much time alone together with Mulder's work and having to keep our relationship a secret from my brother. Four whole nights away will be beyond amazing.

Mulder POV

As I finish up work that Wednesday afternoon, I can't get out the door fast enough. It's only four o'clock but my partner is covering for me so I can leave an hour early and make it to my parents' house by five. With the amount of hours I've poured into my work earlier no one even comments or minds that I leave a bit early.

I drive home and shower, changing into some beige chinos and a white dress shirt. Dana's just finishing up packing the last things when I walk into my bedroom.

"Ready?" I smile at her.

"Yeah…" her gaze drops to my clothes. "You've dressed up?"

"Oh," I look down at my attire which is way more formal than what I normally wear outside work. "My mom just likes it when I wear something a bit nicer - she's not as big as a fan of my grey joggers as you are."

I wink at her but she doesn't catch on, she just looks worried.

"Should I change?" she asks, looking down at her black denim jeans and striped Levi's t-shirt.

"You look great," I tell her, putting my hands on her ass and pulling her close to me, as I kiss her forehead.

"No, I'm changing!" she says pushing me away.

"Okay," I chuckle, sitting down on the bed and leaning back to watch her change.

"Mulder, carry the luggage down, would you? I don't want to be late!" she stresses.

I just agree and smile at her. She's so cute when she's nervous. She really wants to make a good impression on my family. I don't even think she'll have to try, I know they'll love her.

I load up the car and wait for her. She's wearing a pretty floral dress as she comes down to the car. It reaches her mid-shin and she's wearing some high heeled sandals that match the color of the dress. She's also wearing an unbuttoned black cardigan, probably not to show off too much skin with the thin spaghetti straps of her dress.

"You look amazing," I smile at her and give her a kiss.

"Thank you," she rolls her eyes at me but smiles.

As we drive out of town and towards Palo Alto the houses are getting bigger and more expensive and I wonder what Dana will think of my family home. When I finally drive up to the house, I stop in front of the gate and press the right combination on the key-pad to open the gate that leads to the driveway going up to the house.

"Your parents live here?" she asks in disbelief - I just nod and continue to drive as the gate opens.

"Mulder, what do your parents do for a living?" she wonders as the big house comes into view.

"Well, my mom works for an NGO," I tell her. "And my dad took over the family business after my grandfather who took over from my great-grandfather."

"And what exactly is the family business?" she asks me.

"They manage different companies," I shrug. "A lot of different stuff really. Restaurants, small businesses, apartments…"

"Jesus Christ!" she mutters as I park next to my dad's Bentley which is parked next to my mom's Audi. "Why didn't you warn me, Mulder? I'm so underdressed!"

"Dana," I chuckle and take her hand. "It's just my family. You look amazing!"

"Yeah, okay," she sighs and nods. "Just a family dinner."

"Exactly," I smile at her and give her a quick kiss before we get out of the car.

I take her hand as we walk to the door. I open the door and walk in with Dana in tow. My mom walks into the entrance hall just as we walk in.

"Fox!" she says happily as she sees me.

She takes my face in her hands and kisses my forehead.

"Mom!" I say slightly embarrassed but she just laughs at me and looks over to Dana. "This is Dana."

"Dana," she smiles at her and pulls her in for a hug, Dana lets go of my hand and gives my mom a hug even though she seems very surprised at this. "I'm so happy to meet you!"

"It's nice to finally meet you too, Mrs. Mulder," she smiles at her and I take her hand again - I love her so much.

My mom looks down at our hands and suppresses a giggle, covering her mouth with her hand.

"Well, come on in, you two!" she ushers us into the dining room. "Dinner will be served soon - Bill and Samantha are dying to meet Dana!"

"Bill?" Dana whispers at me.

"Yeah, my dad," I chuckle at her, knowing that it's her dad's name too - and her brother's obviously.

My dad and Samantha both stand up to hug me and shake Dana's hand before we all sit down around the huge dining table. My mom and dad are sitting on each end of it as they always do. Samantha is on the opposite side of the table than Dana and me. The center of the table is as always taken up by seasonal decorations and fresh flowers. The table is already set with the nice china and silverware. I look over to Dana and her cheeks are slightly pink - she doesn't seem embarrassed or aroused so my guess is that she's warm in her cardigan.

"Let me take this," I chuckle at her and move the cardigan over her shoulders and down her arms.

"Thanks," she says quietly while I hang the cardigan on the back of her chair, she's flustering and turning even more red now - she's so goddamn cute.

"Dana, weren't you at Fox's graduation?" Samantha distracts me from looking at Dana and thinking some impure thoughts about the way her dress hugs her breasts.

"Oh, yeah," she nods, taking a sip of the water in front of her. "Mul… Fox was friends with my brother in highschool."

"Wait, aren't you Bill's little sister?" Samantha asks.

"Your best friend Bill?" my dad wonders, frowning. "Your roommate Bill?"

"Yes, that Bill!" I sigh.

"Wow, dating the sister of a friend, that can be messy," my dad states, raising his eyebrows at me.

"Oh, honey!" my mom cuts off my dad. "That stuff doesn't matter when you're in love - things have a way of sorting themself out in the end when true love is involved."

"Of course," my dad just smiles at my mom and then at me. "Sorry, Fox and Dana."

"That's okay," Dana smiles back at him. "And you're right, Mrs. Mulder, I'm sure things will work out when we tell my brother."

"Oh, he doesn't know?" Samantha chuckles. "Ouch!"

"Sam!" I object. "Please!"

"Mulder," Dana chuckles at me. "Don't take everything so seriously, it's just banter - they're only teasing you."

"Oh," I chuckle and lean over to kiss her cheek. "Sorry."

"Fox was always very serious," my mom winks at Dana who just giggles and nods in agreement.

They already seem to get along pretty well. Miss Wilkins, the housekeeper, comes into the room pushing a serving table with our dinner on it. She walks around the table and places the plates in front of us. We all thank her and Dana extends her hand to her and introduces herself as she's put her food in front of her. My mom and dad share a smile at this. They definitely like Dana already.

"How long have you two been seeing each other then?" dad asks us as we dig into the roast dinner.

"Four years," I tell him mindlessly without looking up from the meat I'm cutting.

"Four years?" mom exclaims.

"Well, yeah," I look up and see their astonished faces. "We started seeing each other right before Dana went off to college."

"I've been attending Harvard these last four years so we've only been able to see each other a few times a year," Dana explains.

"I see," mom nods in understanding. "So what are your plans after college, Dana?"

"I'll be studying medicine at Stanford in the fall," she tells them and they all look impressed.

"Dana finished top of her class at Harvard," I tell them proudly and Dana just rolls her eyes at me, making my family laugh. "What? That's impressive!"

"It's very impressive!" mom chimes in. "You should be proud, Dana."

"I am," she acknowledges. "But thank you, Mrs. Mulder."

The conversation flows freely throughout dinner and dessert. My family gets to know Dana pretty well and we all share quite a few laughs as well.

"Fox, why don't you show Dana around and meet us in the lounge?" my mom asks me as we get up after dinner.

"Sure," I smile and take Dana's hand.

I show her the whole place and she seems pretty impressed.

"Saved the best for last," I chuckle before opening the door to my old room, which my parents kept pretty much the way I left it.

"Wow!" Dana chuckles as she walks into the room.

The walls are dark blue. There's a king size bed with a wooden bedframe in the middle of the room. My old desk still has an old stationary computer on it. There's a little basketball hoop on the wall over the bin. There's a few posters from some of my favourite movies on the walls along with some of my old favourite bands. Dana walks over to my desk and picks up an old picture of Sam and me.

"You were a cute kid," she remarks, smiling at the picture.

"You think?" I chuckle, putting my arms around her from behind, kissing her cheek.

"Definitely," she sighs, putting down the picture and turning around in my arms, kissing me gently with her hand on my nape.

"My family loves you, by the way," I tell her as we rest our foreheads against each other. "I told you they would."

"I like your family, Mulder," she says sincerely. "Your mom is so sweet."

"I guess, when she's not busy embarrassing me," I roll my eyes but smile.

"So," she looks around my old room again. "Did you ever bring any girls here?"

"Nah," I chuckle. "You're the first."
"Am I really?" she asks in disbelief.

"Well, yeah," I shrug. "You know I was Mr. Casual in highschool when I lived here… I've never brought anyone home to meet my parents before, Dana."

"Never?" she sounds surprised.

"Nope, you're special," I say and kiss her.

"I like that," she chuckles against my lips as she pulls away from me. "We should probably head back down."

"Not yet," I sigh, trying to draw her closer as I walk backwards towards the bed.

"Okay, we're going down now, Mulder," she rolls her eyes at me. "Before you excite yourself too much!"

"You're the one exciting me in that dress," I remark as I follow her out of the room.

"Stop it, Mulder," she chuckles, taking my hand as we walk down the hallway to the stairs leading back down to the entrance hall.

I lead us into the lounge where my mom and sister are chatting away on the plush couch, my dad leaned back in his armchair watching the two of them. I sit down with Dana on the couch on the opposite side of the loaded coffee table from my mom and sister. There's tea, coffee and multiple types of cookies and chocolates.

I pour myself a cup of coffee and grab a few cookies. Dana has some tea and a piece of chocolate.

"You have a beautiful home," Dana says when Sam and mom are done chattering.

"Thank you, Dana," my mom beams. "We do love it here!"

They talk a bit more back and forth but I lose interest in the conversation as I observe Dana. Her red hair falls down to her shoulderplates, curling slightly as it does naturally when she doesn't straighten it. The sun has brought out some freckles on her face that are lightly spread out over her nose and upper cheeks. Her blue eyes are sparkling as her mouth is curled into a smile. I lean back on the couch and place my hand on her lower back as I slowly fade out of the conversation more and more, drawing lazy patterns on her lower back as I just observe her and revel in how perfect and beautiful she is. Her hand is mindlessly playing with the cross pendant hanging around her neck as she continues to talk to my family.

Dana is giggling at me and I look up just in time to see my mom go to the cabinet on the other side of the room. Oh damn, I know what that means… and sure enough, my mom comes back with an old photo album.

"Is that really necessary?" I whine.

"Oh, c'mon, Fox!" mom just brushes me off and sits down next to Dana, placing the album on Dana's lap.

I lean closer to Dana to look at the old pictures along with her. She seems completely absorbed by watching baby me grow up and she laughs as my mom tells stories to go along with some of the photos. There's a lot of pictures from New York, where I lived the first 17 years of my life. This is the "Fox" album so it's mainly pictures of me. When they reach age 12 there's way fewer pictures and my smile doesn't quite reach my eyes anymore. I look like a sad kid in most of the pictures. But that's when Sam started getting sick. When they reach my highschool graduation pictures my mom lets out a little squeal.

"Dana, that's you!" she laughs. "I remember now! You've certainly grown up a lot since then!"

"I was just a freshman back then," she chuckles. "God, I still had my braces on."

"It's been ages since I've seen that picture!" I say in wonder, looking at it for the first time in years. "Look how dorky my hair was! I was so skinny back then! I can't believe you had a crush on me looking like that…"

"Mulder!" Dana objects, flushing a deep shade of red.

"Honestly, Fox!" Sam breaks in. "I don't think you get to shame anyone for having a crush with the way you've been gazing at Dana all night."

My mom and dad break into fits of laughter and I just sigh defeatedly… Sam kinda has me there!

"So you always liked my son?" my mom sweetly asks Dana, smiling warmly at her.

"I was just a kid back then," she shrugs. "But yeah, I always liked him. I remember crying all night when he left for college."

"Did you?" I chuckle. "You never told me that!"

"Well, I knew I was just Bill's kid sister to you back then - I would have just embarrassed myself if I told you how I felt," she shrugs.

"How did you two finally end up together then?" dad wonders out loud.

"Well, I transferred back here and got the apartment," I tell them. "And as you know Bill moved in with me and Dana came around and… well, she definitely wasn't a kid anymore."

My dad laughs with me while the women just roll their eyes at my comment.

"I mean, I couldn't really act on it or ask her out since she's my best friend's sister… but I might have dropped a flirtatious remark here and there to let her know how I felt about her…" I smirk. "We started hanging out quite a bit that year and even though we clearly had chemistry I always said I could never do it to Bill… and then some jock asked Dana to prom and I got really pissy…"

I break into a laugh thinking back on that and Dana just smiles lovingly at me even though she's blushing slightly.

"I ended up ditching my prom date and taking a cab to Mulder's apartment," Dana remembers.

"And you finally admitted how you felt about each other?" Sam asks dreamily.

"Not really," I shrug and chuckle. "But we had lots of sex."

My dad breaks into a throaty laughter while all three women exclaim my name admonishingly, Dana even slaps my stomach with the back of her hand.

"Anyway," I clear my throat. "Dana moved across the country a few months after that. We only saw each other whenever she was back in town. There were ups and downs through the last four years but it got us where we needed to be. And then when she moved back this summer we had the long overdue talk… we finally declared our love for each other and we've pretty much just been happy ever since."

"You know, you're the first one Fox has ever brought home to meet us," mom smiles at Dana. "We're so happy he has you in his life, Dana! My son has always struggled, never feeling like he's good enough - I haven't seen him this happy since he was a kid. It's clear how much the two of you love each other."

"I do love your son," Dana smiles back. "It's been so great meeting you, you've all been so nice and welcoming."

"As far as we're concerned you're part of the family now, Dana," dad winks at her.

"Definitely," Sam agrees.

"Can I take your picture before you leave?" mom asks us. "I think tonight is worthy of going in the photo album."

I roll my eyes at my mom but we let her take our picture. After that we head out - we have a four hour drive to the cabin, so we really should get going.

We're just about to get in the car after hugging my family goodbye when my mom calls me back. I tell Dana I'll be right back and jog to the house where my mom ushers me back inside the lounge.

"What is it?" I chuckle. "Did I forget something?"

"This," my mom says holding up her engagement ring.

"What?" I ask confused.

"That used to be my mom's," dad smiles at me, putting his arm around my mom's waist.

"I know," I nod and then it dawns on me. "Wait, what?"

"When I brought your mother home to meet my parents… I was so in love," he chuckles at the memory. "When Teena left, my mother pulled me aside and gave me her ring. Two months later I proposed and thankfully your mother said yes!"

"You don't have to ask Dana right away of course," mom chuckles. "Not even for years, if you're not ready. I know things move a lot slower today than they did when we were young. But I know you'll want to marry that girl one day. And we want you to have this."

"Thanks," I smile and take the ring, I study it closely. "I do want to marry Dana one day. I want to spend the rest of my life with her."

"I know how you feel," dad sighs and kisses my mom's cheek.

"Thank you so much," I say, feeling very touched by the gesture - I stuff the ring in my pocket and give my parents a tight hug.

"Go on, Fox," my mom chuckles. "Don't keep Dana waiting for too long!"

I nod and give them a big smile before going back to the car.

"What did your mom want?" Dana wonders as I start up the car.

"Oh, she just wanted me to know that she approves of you," I chuckle.

"Oh," she smiles. "Good, I'm glad."
